    I am really worried because I have been using Omeprazole 20mg/d for 16 years nonstop... I went through many tests to find out why I had Acid---Reflux everyday, and finally I was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia. I used Cimetidine for 14 years but it did not help much. Then, I had a different Doctor who thought Omeprazole would be better. I need it every day, otherwise I can not eat or drink anything. My food is Mediterranean type and I am a healthy middle-aged female.

      16 years is nothing compared to what I endured. Had severe acid secretion for 22 years+ and starting looking to see how I can get off of medication. I started with 20mg famotidine to 150mg ranitidine and eventually 20mg omeprazole. Last December, I had enough I just decided to stop all meds because it was too long. I got extreme stomach acid for about 2 to 3 weeks but took baking soda to help and I stood the pain. After that period, i noticed the burning got less and less daily and i didn't use the baking soda everyday. About 2 weeks after using it, the acid stopped affecting me. Your stomach needs to be acidic, it was designed to handle a low PH. Its been about 5 months now without meds or baking soda. Omeprazole is designed to keep you hooked for life

      @@epartsacc You are correct. One of the reasons for GERD in many people is a LACK of stomach acid

    I’ve had stomach acid since I was 22, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, my dad had it also. Although I practiced a less acidic diet…I still used Rolaid’s and Tums for about 30 years. About 35 years ago I saw a heart doctor in South Miami who had the same problem and he told me to take Omeprazole every morning and don’t worry. I did and it stopped my heartburn. However, I had my gall bladder removed and I’ve had bad bouts of Anemia which prompted 2 infusions for lack of iron. I’ve had Peripheral Neuropathy for 10 years. I now take vitamin B12, Magnesium, Lipoic acid and a Pre Biotic. I still have occasional heartburn but nothing like the past. My Neuropathy doctor knows this and advised me to continue with the Omeprazole. (Prilosec) I am 88 years old.

    I was on 20mg omeprezole for 40 years I’m now 73, I had an endoscopy last year and told me I had 10 fundic polyps in my stomach which can be a ppi side effect, also hair loss, osteopenia and slow gut motility, so six months ago I went on a strict low carb meat based diet for 3 months and after 2 weeks I came off ppis but I was also tapering the dosage down very slowly, after 3 months I’m now on a keto diet got rid of type 2 diabetes and high triglycerides, my advise is to never give up and keep watching helpful videos like this one.

    Thanks for this video. I've had GERD for over 14 years to varying degrees. I've aspirated my stomach acid into my lungs countless times over those years, and I take esomiprazol 40mg/daily. I'm finally asking for hiatal hernia repair surgery so that I can get off the medications and not have reflux. OMG this is a mess. The medication prevents the problem, but I am very worried about the side effects of long term use. Thanks again.

      Just remember that evidently these hiatal hernia repair operations are not that successful, i.e. the hernia tends to appear again after a year or more. But the success rate is greater than 50% to the best of my knowledge, so good luck!

    I have had grade C and D reflux esophagitis for almost 4 years . Both upper and lower abdominal pain and these doctors keep pushing me to take ppis and I been reluctant . I actually took them first in er and it made me worse . So Im really concerned about my throat and swallowing etc but at the same time I dont know if I ever wanna even start with ppis . I havent heard good stories. Im not sure if I should do it cause I feel I wont be able to get of it and doctor using scare tactics and doesnt really ensure you to wanna take them . Any thoughts is appreciated . Thank you Curtis .

      I'm not a fan of this class of drugs simply because they don't address the root cause of your issue (it's not an acid issue - it's an esophageal sphincter issue). However, if you are getting acid into your esophagus on the regular that's an issue as well.

    • @shaneshrimp6519

      @@AskCurtis Yes agreed , to me its just a band aid but at this point Im lost cause they are giving me all the horror stories if this isnt corrected . Been seeing naturopath as well been on supplemnts for weeks and not really sure what the results of that is of yet. I ve had hiatal hernia and they told me mechanical issue with valve so I trying to figure if thats the cause I was leaning more towards surgery than ppis . GI telling me now they wont do it cause of the existing inflammation in my esophagus and stomach.

    • @AskCurtis
      @AskCurtis  10 місяців тому +2

      @@shaneshrimp6519 Bit of a sidenote/rant - but I find it funny all the naturopaths, functional MD's, chiro's ... take your pick. They all pile on traditional MD's for prescribing drugs (a fair critique) but then they just give people 'supplements' to fix the issue because their 'natural'.
      I've known clients who were on $400 a month of supplements to fix being fat. Both the mainstream and 'natural' docs end up being two sides of the same coin.
      ** Rant over ** - sounds like yours is mechanical in origin. If that's the case then there is a time and a place for surgery. You may be there.

      Good for your Barbara. PPI's like omeprazole are overprescribed (and frankly only needed in extreme cases). Even then it's still not addressing the root cause.

    Thank you for this video. I have been taking 40 or 20 mg of Zoltex (pantoprazol) with as little frequency as I could to calm down the painful irritation in my esophagus - my GP thought gastroscopy was not indicated. The stinging pain gets relieved for abt 2 days but always comes back. Only recently I learned about this medication suspected side effects on dementia 😪. I found a very efficacious natural alternative for stomac acid: abt 5 ( not less) almonds cut or grated into tiny parts ( to prevent breaking teeth!). It works immediately. Could it be that this regular consumption of almonds lead to my normal cholesterol levels (it did!) although I stopped taking all medication?
