    I was on these for 20 years due to acid reflux and now got off them. I know bread, pastry and fizzy drinks would trigger reflux. To get off I changed to a diet based on Prof Spector's research on gut health. I eat a lot of salads and also yoghurt and fruit, nuts, fish, some lean meat. No sugar, v little carbs. Aim is to get my microbiome healthy and diverse. Took about 3 weeks to really start working. No reflux, losing weight gradually but don't feel as hungry anyway, more energy and drive. Another tip is to use ginger if you stray into foodstuffs that start to trigger reflux and also chamomile tea.

      @@cissem4025 might be, but think not, as gluten free bread still gives me indigestion. As a footnote to my original post although I felt much better on the diet, the acid reflux didn't entirely go away. It seems to be linked to post nasal drip and irritation I'm my nose. The ENT confirmed reflux and added Gaviscon Advanced at night in addition to the omeprazole. I also went back to the Gastro guy who did a barium meal and ot showed I still had a small hiatus hernia. A lot has happened since my first post but not been able to stop omeprazole. Although I'm back to a low dose. I'm now concentrating on losing weight not just having a healthy diet. Need to lose at least 2 stone to take pressure off hiatus hernia. Have always been better when I had less weight.

    My elderly mother was put on this for no reason we can ascertain (as she hasn't had acid reflux, etc) and she was on it for 6 years! 6 years! She has exhibited serious symptoms including pain in her back and joints, loss of all strength, vomiting, severe fever, and rigors. She has also been suffering with regular UTIs. She has been anemic too.
    I asked the doctor if she could come off it and could she come off straight away. I got a shrug and was told it'd be fine.
    So we took her off cold turkey. Thankfully, absolutely no problem. Then again, she never had any acid! Anyway, after 5 days, all her symptoms disappeared. So that's 2 ½ years of very bad quality of life thanks to the incompetents in the National Health Service.
    The NHS in the UK is frighteningly incompetent.

      I am coming off slowly after being told I need to take it for the rest of my life. I have had all manner of issues since taking it. I was getting flare ups almost immediately after taking it every other day and as the clip stated take over the counter anti acid on days it was bad. 2 months on now on only two a week and nothing in between. Hopefully off completely in a couple of weeks and see how it goes. In the UK they seem to just give you everything and do not tell you of the long term effects

    • @craigk621
      @craigk621 Рік тому +2

      That's because there was no requirement to have strict budget control. What they should do is run preventative health checks each year (some do this) rather than purely reactive responses when something happens.
      The cost of those health checks generally far outway the cost of long term prescription drugs and / or the cost of treating those side effects you mention here.

      I'm in the process of coming off these tablets and what struck me is I was put on them to coincide with an arthritis drug to protect my stomach. I've not taken those drugs in years yet am still on omeprazole? The NHS doesn't check in on its patients when it should because it can't. It doesn't have enough money or resources anymore to look after people properly.

    I was prescribed PPIs (omeprazole) for over 30 years for acid refux, which has progressed to GERD anyway! I quit taking PPIs 4 years ago (at 58) after I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis (DEXA scores of -3.0 in hip, improved to -2.4 this year). In the spine, neck too. Shrunk 2 inches, 6'1" to 5'11" in height at my annual physical (that's what made my doctor suspicious in the first place, and immediately ordered the DEXA scan).
    The greatest irony is that I was in excellent shape; an avid runner (20+ miles a week) all my life, and in the gym 3x weekly. I had ZERO clue about the OP. My new doctor was also surprised. She told me to immediately stop running and lifting weights, and was amazed that my first symptom had not already been a collapse on some remote running trail, due to a catastrophic hip failure. Now I am really watching my diet and still trying to get on a meaningful, less intense exercise program to stimulate bone growth. Refuse to take anymore Prolia after 4 years of that (worries about possible side effects....of another med....again). And, am controlling and watching the GERD so I don't also develop esophageal cancer in the future.
    The above is probably way too much info, but it's my story. A healthy, active, life changed forever due to 1 prescription medication.

    Thank you so much for your service to others, others who've had our precious bodies abused by medication, often for many years, by overworked GPS . Or there is the other shady situation we don't wish to think of, is of our health care practitioners taking bribes and or worse, putting monetary incentives, over the care of the patients or their needs. I've seen the reps turn up at lunch time to smooze with the Doctor. The healthcare system needs a full transparency policy, to protect the vulnerable. Remember Doctors?, " First do no harm ". It's the solid oath you took , and I wonder how many are going to look after this period of time, and come to regret the choices they made at this time. 🤔

    I was instructed years ago to take as much of this as needed to prevent acid. I had been on two a day for years. Recently, I was able to drop to one by adding the supplement L-Glutamine, and then went off completely by replacing it with an all-natural antacid pill I found on Amazon. I was also (and still am) taking a Tums tablet most every night. I found 20mg was to much really, wonderful when you are on it but really bad when you stop, I found 10mg per day was just as effective, and keep going for a few months to let things settle then reduce the dose to 5mg per day then 2.5mg per day, over a few weeks, you can do this easily by opening the 20mg capsule and pouring the contents which are small spherical balls evenly into empty clear gelatine capsules ie one 20mg capsule makes four 5mg or eight 2.5mg capsules, and when you stop taking any the acid stays away, should you feel a bit of acid returning just one or two 2.5mg for a couple of days should be all you need, it worked for me...

Reduce 10mg for a month then stop taking them and instead, take Ranitidine 300mg once a day for a month then reduce to 150mg or Ranitidine for a month, then 75mg for 2 weeks then graviscon when needed. These tablets omeprazole are horrendous for the body long term. They were only designed to be taken short term like a month or so. Doctors have taken the easy way out and prescribed these to anyone with acid reflux without looking at causes. As usual just treating the symptoms. It is like if you have a water leak in your house just shutting the water off without treating the cause. I know someone who has been taking omeprazole for 35 years, they now have all sorts of problems, arthritis in knee which is severe as no fluid in knee, gallstones, fatty liver, and now AFIB. They experience severe pain when taking a mouthful of food and feel generally unwell all the time. I would advocate never taking these for more than 2 months. She wants to come off them but there is nowhere that advises how to wean off them safely. She has tried cutting down gradually but ends up with severe acid pain. These tablets are truly a nightmare.

    My gerd is so bad that I get horrible shortness of breath and nausea. Sometimes I get sharp chest pain, as well.
    I’ve been on Nexium for a month, and the symptoms are mostly gone; but now I’m dealing with constipation.
    I have an appointment with a GI doctor soon to talk about the LINX procedure. I hope I’m a good candidate. It seems promising.

    • @omg28374
      @omg28374 3 роки тому

      @Who wants to be a millionaire? “LINX® is an exciting new way to treat GERD that brings the excellent results of the traditional surgical approach, the fundoplication, without the invasiveness, permanence and side-effects that often accompany the fundoplication procedures.
      It is a very clever device comprised of a bracelet of magnetic beads that is surgically placed around the end of the esophagus over the weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The magnetic attraction of each of the beads helps hold the Linx device closed and in this way augmenting the LES. When food is swallowed, the force of swallowing beaks the magnetic connection between the beads causing the LINX® device to open allowing the food to pass into the stomach. The device then quickly closes to maintain the barrier against reflux.”
      “The device is placed during a minimally invasive surgical procedure that takes less than one hour. It is an outpatient procedure allowing patients to avoid an overnight stay in the hospital that is common with the fundoplication and other anti-reflux procedures. Most patients can return to work and regular activity within a few days of surgery.
      There is the need to follow a special diet for a few weeks after surgery to allow the device to "break-in" and the body to heal the area around the device. For some patients, especially those who also have a hiatal hernia, there may be the need to limit heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for one month after surgery to allow the hiatal hernia repair that accompanies the device placement to heal.”

However; I have been having kidney pain, and suspect that long-term negative effects on my energy levels (possibly poor iron and B12 absorption) are likely due to the use of Omeprazole. So... Problem with doctors in uk they will just keep telling patients to keep taking them as they won't understand why people want to come off them. A friend of mine has taken omeprazole for 35 years and now has knee arthritis,gallstones,severe pain in stomach and right across abdomen as soon as she takes a mouthful of food, now AFIB. She feels awful, generally unwell all the time but has tried coming off them with little success. Severe acid rebound even trying to do it gradually. She says it is a nightmare.

    I have managed to ween off patoprazole by not eating eating food 3 hours before bedtime. And by stuffing another pillow under the head end of the mattress to raise the upper body, so gravity keeps the acid more at bay in the stomach. If I am tired and can not avoid eating shortly before bedtime I have learnt to sleep on 3 pillows arranged so they raise my upper torso on a 45 degree angle. If I wake up a few hours later when the stomach acid has died down I can remove a pillow or two if I want to and go back to sleep.

    Totally fucked up after stopping such medications. Even after completely changing my life style, the withdrawal symptoms are a living hell. Worse are the episodes of head aches and dizziness. The whole medical profession seems to be screwed up. For a short term relief, you give us pain for a lifetime. Have stopped these PPIs for the past seven days and life is a freaking hell. But would not want to return to such a bad marriage. I am getting bouts of acid regurgitation, dizziness, severe headaches, nausea inspite of all lifestyle changes. The way your chest clamps up seems like you are experiencing an attack!! Have to cross at least four weeks for these side effects to subside.

I got off the Omeprazole without telling the Dr. they never told me it was for a short time only they keep giving it. I read about side effects. Just try it and you will see it can heal you. Do not be a fool eating what hurts??? Change your crazy eating. We all do it. Just eat healthy and stay healthy.

      Do one thing in the morning called Kinjal kriya a yoga technique (Google for more details). Drink lukewarm salt water in the morning on an empty stomach about a litre and a half rapidly and then vomit. This gets out all the acid from your gut and gives you relief but get away from these PPI.
