It was always strawberry rhubarb here in southern Ontario. Still love it every year when fresh. Your crops are looking good. Thanks to you and the doggy for a morning laugh.
Saskatoons...yumm! Got 'em growing out in the back yard. Never thought to match them with rhubarb. Got some of that, too. Now....if I can convince Herself that I deserve a reward for all my hard work this past week....maybe there'll be some pie in my future. Wish me luck. And yes......Saskatchewan is a beautiful province!
Now you got me intrigued, QD. I'm going to try making this. It won't be as good as yours because I'll have to use Ontario ruhbarb. Glad to see your best friend liked it, too. Yes, Saskatchewan is a beautiful place and the folks are the best as well.
When I drove across Canada from NB, I LOVED going through Saskatchewan... the sky was so blue and so big and all of the sunflower fields just blew me away!!
Holy shit stepping it up with that drone video at the start!!! Damn bro... that dessert looks so good man! As a chef, that dodgy spatula holding got me sitting on edge for a bit! You're also looking real good homie, I am sure you won't have any issues dating the next lady to move into town 😂 Looking forward to the discussion on beef and emissions. I am from New Zealand and the fundamentalist environmentalists are going pretty hard on methane emissions from our livestock farmers here. Some pretty insane policies being proposed. Will be interesting to hear what you have to say on beef and emissions, I am sure it will be insightful!
love Saskatoons and Raspberries in milk with a little bit of brown sugar, My Grandmother used to put this together for me as a desert when I was a kid. Loved the bit on swiping the Rhubarb because everyone I grew up with has done it.
You had me at sharing the spoon with Axle. Priceless...thanks for the Monday morning chuckle...actually it's 10 pm here in the Philippines, but I work online for a Toronto pharmaceutical company. 😁
Looks delicious Quick ! Just harvested some Toon Berries and neighbors Rhubarb ourselves ! Going to be makin this recipe right away !! Thanks for that !!
Hey there QDM, nice going with the cook’n show👍🏼 Not at all where I thought you was take’n us! Here in The South of Michigan we don’t have the Saskatoons, but we’ve Blueberries a’plenty and Rhubarb is also in good supply, so Bluebarb Pie and Cobbler are two of my favorites especially when topped with good ol vanilla ice cream😎. Nice of you to share your bounty with a great friend at the end! Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
Sorry to hear about your ribs! That must really hurt getting in & out of the tractor and Blue. The sunset over that beautiful field was stunning! The dessert and the dog are awesome! I hope you feel better soon! Love from Northern Alberta!💕
Stuck in Bakersfield, California (I came here looking for something I couldn’t find anywhere else…). Now I have a major craving for some rhubarb crisp. You are evil, QDM!!🤣
Thank you I am on night shift and now when I get home instead going to sleep I will likely make a crisp. My wife's cousin (Mark) had this mooch coming over a regular bases to his place and always struck around for supper never even brought over a beer and never helped with the clean up. So one day Mark let his dog lick everything clean and put it all away in front of the mooch - he didn't drop by after that..😂
Glad you’re healing up! We pick wild Saskatoon’s right at our campsite and enjoyed Saskatoon berry bushpies! Gotta love Saskatchewan! I thought the video was great! Nothing bad about switchin things up when we need to! And the dogs expression after the credits was hilarious! 😄
Yes!!!! I can approve this dessert! Absolutely delicious!! Never thought about using the smoker though! Lol I put a corner of bread in my brown sugar and it stays soft forever 👍 proud to say all the sugar, brown sugar, oats, flour, and honey in my house are Canadian made.. 😊 Thank you for the good laugh 😆
Sask sure is god's country QDM. Proud to call it home. This was a great video. Thanks for showing us some good home cooking and some great humour. Hope the ribs are healing quickly. Looking forward to the video about emissions. Your pooch is very expressive. and sweet. take care
This was great QDM. First heard you on the Millennial Farmer podcast and I've been catching up on all your videos. Thanks for the great humor! Take care of yourself up there eh'.
“Get over yerself!” had me laughing. Bachelors don’t clean things until the Dept. of Health gets involved. Crops are looking good. Sorry to hear about your ribs, but I thought that’s what you were putting in the smoker. Have a terrific week, QDM!
Yummy!!!! This makes me want to go out and pick some raspberries tomorrow and make a raspberry/rhubarb crisp using 100% Canadian products (I use some local Ontario maple syrup as a sugar substitute in mine). Love how you shared with your pup at the end. Thank you for a great video and I look forward to your next one cooking with beef
The shirt bag is also the acceptable form for picking V. Island blackberries... if youve forgotten a yogurt container. Works for Okanagan cherries too!
Mans best friend. Food and a pooch. Saskatoons are not every years but one of the best prairie summer treats. Always went as bear patrolling for mom and grama.
I always go back to realizing that everyone generally wants the same simple things no matter what language/race, religion or geographical region you originate (health and happiness for you and yours..good food and good company (two or four legged) just make it that much better)...those simple summer wild delicacies we take for granted...well, you sir, could easily pass for an Albertan and I am proud to tune into your antics (Saskatchewan based or not...youre an unapologetic real Canadian who says it as it is, thank you) those two ingredients mean summer to me...never have I thought of combining them. I will substitute Saskatchewan ice cream for whole or whipped cream since we cant get yours here, lol...but looking forward to trying it! Unfortunately I have only been to four provinces in Canada, not proud of it...but one day I will experience the rest an the green nation! (maybe its a how you were raised instead of where you are raised...) Isnt that how you get rid of people you never want to eat with again...leave the dog lick the plates then place them back in the cupboard...making sure those people are watching?! bahaha.
In Alberta we do it almost the same except you make double the oats and put half on the bottom and half on top. The 1/2" thick crisp on the bottom is awesome!!
Greetings from the smoke filled Okanagan again sir. We have Saskatoons out here, but they're not exactly the same as we had on the flat lands. The Saskatoons in the Kootenays are more like them in flavor and how they grow as well. Rhubarb was hard to kill in my experience. Years after a homestead was cleaned up the rhubarb patch would come up in the middle of the field of whatever it was we'd planted. I often thought about what that all meant - you know symbolically in the greater scheme of my existence in the cosmos... then I'd get out and pick some rhubarb of course... Stay well Quick Dick.
I never thought I would watch a cooking video LOL, however that was very entertaining and being someone that was raised on rhubarb and my mother had many recipes, this brought back a lot of memories, and sharing with your best friend was the best LOL hope the rims get better soon!
@@deanlarsen1389 that chicken wrap…smears peanut butter on a wrap while he’s cooking chicken, what is going on here…adds hot sauce 🤯…OMGosh yes! Why have I never done that?! (I might have added a veggie in there, but to each their own)
Right there with ya Ian, I was never one to follow that trend... However the Reverend Quick here, he puts a spin on things so’s you don’t want to miss out! Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
Love it! (Pro tip, if you don't want your cutting boards sliding all over the place during use, moisten a kitchen towel, ring it out well, and put it on the counter under your cutting board.) A sharp knife and a wiggly cutting board can almost be as dangerous as a slow pitch fence, but still not as dangerous as an angry momma cow.
Love you Axle! Quick you could make a video about a cardboard box and make it funny. Yummy dessert! I'll be making something similar. Thanks and have a great week.
Ok..gave this a try but in the oven not the smoker... Brilliant...Not usually a fan of Rhubarb but the Saskatoons bring it to life.....My wife thinks I am a cooking genius. Thanks!

strawberry rhubarb or how about apple rhubarb pie? Now that's some good stuff. Actually one of my favorite pies

I grew up with many variations of this dessert (Heck, I'd have had it as a main course, when I was a kid) depending on what fruit we could find to go with the Rhubarb. A side note - "thank you" Elsie at Carvel for this info - there are at least three varieties of Rhubarb that grow in or near the North Saskatchewan River Valley and nearby creeks. And they all taste a little different - all good, just different. Since growing Rhubarb is mainly a matter of getting a friend like Elsie to whack off part of a Rhubarb plant, then take it home, put it in a hole near the compost pile, and step back smartly as it expands like something out of "Alien," it's not hard to get one or more of these types growing in a corner out back of the porch.
Depending on the month, if I go down and walk the paths by the creeks and the river, I find - aside from Saskatoons - tiny little Raspberries, really tangy, sometimes some wild Strawberries, and another berry that's somewhere in colour between a raspberry and a blackberry (without the thorns). The season on those is only about 2 weeks - but they're fantastic tasting if you can find some. The topping you mixed up can - according to SHE Who Must Be Obeyed (my Mum, a 96-year- young Prairie girl ) - be kept in the fridge, ready to use, for several weeks. It can also be frozen in a zipper-top baggie, according to SHE. Must be true, else I'd have croaked several decades back. The whole dessert, including topping, can also be frozen, unbaked, in medium-size foil containers. Oh, and SHE says if doing that, "mix up a bit of brown sugar and Tapioca, and a handful of flaked oats. Sprinkle that on each container before adding the main topping and freezing." It's Prairie Black Magic, helps keep the topping crispy.
