I’m lowkey obsessed with this film & this is the single most intelligent, insightful & balanced review I’ve seen. I too thought it lacked “heart” on 1st viewing, but on repeated viewing, when I could look past the at-times implausible plot & slick stylistic choices, the performances revealed a deeply moving emotional depth & subtlety. I agree the script isn’t centred on the ‘why’, but the actors are so good they almost supply the why themselves. Tashi’s steeliness can be explained by how hard she had to fight for success given that she’s not from the privileged background many tennis players (including the guys) come from & she’s obviously a woman of colour as well (she mentions the racism of her opponent). Patrick notes she’s not just pursuing her ambition for herself but also for her family & to make a larger social impact too, so when her dream is crushed, I think this - combined with her background - is enough to explain the hardening of her character. As for Patrick & Art, they both went to tennis boarding school, have remote parents, & they also have unresolved issues with their sexuality (it’d be 1 explanation of why Patrick doesn’t seek support from his rich parents).
I am really looking forward to seeing this film. My daughter, Marley Marius interviewed Zendaya for her 2 Vogue cover stories so I feel like I know her and I have been a Mike Feist fan since seeing him in Dear Evan Hansen and WSS. It is great to see that the film is so well received.
@@ryanboss1184 still jealous?, lol, don’t be weird and so obsessed with me, I know that I’m important to you and you can’t stop writing on my comment, are you trying to make me feel uncomfortable with your obsession?

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but from what I’ve heard from everyone is that this film is amazing and that it could easily pick up some nominations (including Zendaya for Actress).
If you've ever had a relationship where you both fight for power and it creates sexual tension, that's resonated with me. Yes, it was a toxic relationship and we're no longer together but the sex was incredible lol.
I think the elements are there for awards. I think the biggest thing that will stop it from getting any is the April release date. In order to be a contender, it would have to have some buzz and be able to hold onto that buzz all the way into the fall when people actually start thinking about awards. Certainly we've had films that came out early in the year and managed to do that.... it's just a question of whether or not this is going to be one of those films.
I definitely think the movies score is definitely its best shot at Oscar’s since that’s definitely the most raved apart of the film and maybe screenplay. However, noms for Picture, Director, and Lead Actress I just don’t see it. It only feels that way because of how early it is in the year.
I want to see this movie because critics are saying Zendaya shows she has range as an actress and I've yet to see that in her previous roles. To me she's always been one note: dour. I am excited for the brilliant Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist (who should've been nominated if not won the Oscar for West Side Story). And of the movies I've seen by the director, they've been good but one-time watches. So I'm intrigued but might wait for streaming.
@@claireindigo1200 All of the above and also Malcolm & Marie. I'm not hating, I'm fairly indifferent to her but she is the new IT girl and I want to understand all the hype. Some of our greatest actors can only play one role.
But, this time the boys are better- she’s always Zendaya. Her lucky moment was with Euphoria, and that’s because playing a drug addict is easier for POC.
Most people unless they are musicians or Hindus who chant mantras, do not realize the power of sounds. Mantras are pure sounds signified by Jupiter the planet that signify Gods. Even in Christianity God days Let There Be Light and there was light. That is a mantra. Singers come under the Moon. There is a theory in Vedic Astrology that if the Moon is placed in a certain way in the 9th divisional chart (the dharmic or Sun energy of dharma) the person dies early. So a lot of singers if Shiva (the Sun) feels that the songs sung by the singer is not going to bring peace or fhaa to the world, the person dies early. See how important sound is. Actors by playing different roles with different dialogue power, has a median longevity as opposing forces cancel each other out.
I guess I need to watch it again as I seem to be missing something. I just don't believe the premise, and I don't feel any chemistry. The score was great. I appreciate the technical aspects. I am very offended and confused with the use of John Rutter's A New Year Carol in that scene. I love Lucas's films, and I am scratching my head why it's not connecting with me. 5 out of 10 for me.
I’m a huge fan of ‘I am Love’ & definitely agree with you on the implausibility of the premise (& large swathes of the plot). And on the surface, at least, this is a highly atypical Luca film bc of its commercial, poppy sensibility & all-American athletic setting But on repeated viewing, I appreciate the performances more & more. IMO the chemistry between the leads is electric & also, at times, deeply moving.
I agree. I think it’s overrated. The film didn’t make a lot of sense to me (Patrick not being able to pay for a hotel despite coming from a rich family etc)… also I think the film shows nothing new. It’s not a very edgy story. I have no problem with hot scenes in films, and am also not a big fan of pointless steamy scenes… but this movie really lacked more sex scenes, even though it really wanted to market itself as a steamy drama. It wasn’t. Which could have helped give us even more ideas of the power play between the characters. The concept of one of the characters being bisexual was under explored completely, and would have been much more interesting if that had been developed more. The daughter was a character so woefully overlooked it made me wonder why they even put her in the movie. I suppose she was a plot device to develop tension between her parents and her fathers ultimate decision, but she was only in the movie for a few seconds. The argument could be made that she was sidelined by her parents so that’s why the film sidelines her, but that, I feel is just an excuse. The music was cool. the cinematography was wild. The editing and time jumps worked well. The Acting was great (even though Zendaya’s character was a bit flat and single noted for me- but she did a good job). Overall the story was pretty uninspiring for me, and could have explored its characters in a far more interesting way.
I Don't wan't to going on that movie because i never nad sex but i play tenis. That give me a mental down, i never be in a relationship. One pearson wanting that i'm going on that movie. The movie was just ok to me. Nothing interesting about any of the characters. The sound mixing was very obnoxious in places. The ending was also very lame. It's very much a style no substance film but I want you to think there is substance. 4.5 maybe 5 out of 10
I'm just wondering. Are all of them tennis players here? Because if the two guys just started playing tennis at that age when they're already having sex, that's kind odd. As a tennis fan, you start with this sport at a very young age to become a champion.
Just watched it. Very disappointing, particularly the script. I enjoyed only two aspects of the movie: the score and the look of their attractive, young bodies. The score is energizing and pulsating, really worked for me. 4/10.
The movie is expected to debut between $12M to $15M with a budget of $55M. That's a bomb considering the casts and zendaya's hype are doing non stop promo. If it completely bomb then it's over + the april date isn't helping
Is box office that important anymore? Tár made 6.8 million at the US box office on a 25 million budget.
