I dunno, the invisible man-eating red bears in one of the early OZ books were definitely Victorian. They were bears that ate fruit from trees that turned them invisible. Imagine a random red bear sneaking up invisibly to just chomp on you. The only warning would be the smell, but those bears were probably smart enough to approach downwind.

Another "invisible but color" DC creation is the Green Glob which appeared in about a dozen issues of Tales of the Unexpected. It was completely invisible and none of the characters in any issue of Tales of the Unexpected ever saw it or even knew that it existed. But despite being invisible, it was definitely green. The Angel and the Ape miniseries eventually explained it away as the Glob being invisible except under certain frequencies of green light, so it was called "green" because of that. That miniseries also said that the Glob was a creation of the Guardians of the Universe, the guys who started the Green Lantern Corps. So, it has that Green Lantern connection.

The Shark was really big in the 80s, with regular appearances in Green Lantern as one of the big feared Earth villains. He took over Aquaman's kingdom (indirectly leading to his son's death by Black Manta), and was resurrected by Guy Gardner to fight the Qwardians. He even showed up during the finale of Grant Morrison's Animal Man run for the sole purpose of providing action.
Turning him from a hyper-evolved shark to a normal sharkman really dulled his visual appeal, tbh. That weird fleshy, pointed face filled with teeth is so much more emotive and cruel than King Shark.
Shark fought the League.
Yeah his role in Aquaman is still one of my favourites

I think my least favorite "can't affect anything yellow" has to be an issue of The Flash where Hal can't help Barry overcome some problem because one of the chemicals that got spilled on him during his origin was sulfur...
How about the time the Flash had to take his boots off to travel with Green Lantern.

Hal's stories played out at the time as inconsistently as a roleplay between 6-year-olds...

One thing I miss about the yellow weakness was how it allowed Hal to show his creativity in overcoming it. He weaponized *the air!* That was just clever and wasn't due to how OP the ring used to be.
It sorta is about how OP the ring was. If you give your character a weapon that can literally do anything you have to also give him an equally ridicoulus weakness to balance things out. It wasnt enough to have him fight vilalins just as OP, he needs to be consistenly confronted with the same stupid weakness to give more credibility to the threat. And him showing creativity to get out of those imposible scenarios is neccesary for the reader to know that Hal isnt the hero beacause he has the strongest weapon in the universe, he is the hero because of how he wields it. So taking out the yellow limitation was udestandable, since there is only so many stories you can tell with that format (and in the Silver Age prety much every story followed the same patern anyways), but they really should have given the ring another weakness to balance things out. As of now, the only limitation it has is precisely the creativity of the user, something that can change wildly depending of the writer. It needs to have a more terrenal, but less ridicoulus, weakness for the lanterns to have to be clever again isntead of just a rainbow army.
Given how the Power Ring worked back then I'm surprised Hal could get it to work on a sunny day, let alone a world with a yellow sun. Also, 7:58- I wish it worked like that.

I'm not the most knowledgeable about Green Lantern yellow defeats, but I'm sure the time Hal lost to a yellow billboard might be up there as one of the silliest.
Can you elaborate on this particular incident?
@@orinanime it is only worth elaborating if it is better than him flying full speed through a billboard and crashing because it is yellow, because that is how i imagined it

Invisible Yellow sounds like one of those weird color names in decoration, like old green or luminous cian.
Tbh the Shark's involvement in Aquaman is one of my favourites with how effective his strategy to take over the kingdom was and it leading up to the death of AquaBaby

Sasha's shark voices in addition to all her other impressions are quite simply amazing.
In the hyper evolved animal category, there was a chameleon that came back in time to fight Superman. It hijacked Clark Kent's morning bus and took it further back in time to threaten his fellow commuters with dinosaurs (really). I don't know what issue, but definitely a 70's book.
Silver age Hal Jordan is my favorite himbo. Also would love to see a video of Sasha doing the voice of the shark dude. Complete with the “numnumnum “.

I remember reading an original copy of this in the early 80's, ages after it came out. It was pretty cheesy even then. Now take a look at the introduction of Earth One's Major Mynah in the Atom, and maybe a commercial for Hostess fruit pies for dessert. Then we might be able to explain my eternal love of pie, and unreasonable disinterest in DC titles.
Fond memories of Major Mynah. He could have been a fun team player for the Atom.

I first discovered The Shark when he appeared in the Geoff Johns run and he pretty much immediately became tied with Doctor Polaris for my favorite Earth Green Lantern Villain. He's just a shark dude with psychic powers that gets bigger the longer between meals in that story and I found it so funny and I love it
I love these self contained character spotlights. They’re nice and accessible
I feel less alone knowing that Sasha is reading Silver Age GL with me, I love those stories, and at times I rather read them than some weird homages to Silver Age (I'm looking at you Grant Morrison).
Grant Morrison: Yes, let's throw in character without explaining them who was in a single issue decades ago. Everyone will know who they are and not be confused.
@@gregorycourtney1532 the worst part of it all is that even when you get the reference Morrison never goes anywhere really interesting and new with it, so it's extra disappointing, referencing for the sake of referencing is so boooring, the actual silver age is at least funny

I ran across this character reading an old DC WHOS WHO, comic the DC equivalent to the old marvel universe books that told you all about the various characters and their origins, and was driven absolutely mad by how little info I could find online about this character after suicide squad came out, thanks for making me feel sane again ma’am

I remember first seeing the Shark back in the 70's and I'm sure the fact I had Jaws on my mind is what made him so cool to me. The idea of Jaws suddenly being able to get on land and come up with schemes. Wow! Of course now I'll never be able to read his stories without hearing that "nom nom nom" sound, lol. And I'm okay with that.
Yellow is my favorite color, but I never knew it could be invisible.

I can imagine it not being racist. But that is still a pretty bad nickname. It sounds bad saying it in one's head or outloud. It sounds like an insult even if it isn't racial.
Edit: I'll add that carol danvers in one of her comics said call signs weren't bad ass sounding and hers was cheeseburgers.

1) If you want to check out more hyper involved guys in speedos, check out Alpha The Ultimate Mutant who turned Magneto into a baby in early issues of THE DEFENDERS, and The Futurist, who bothered the FF in an issue of FANTASTIC FOUR drawn by John Byrne but not written by him (#216)
2) Quite some time ago, I did a podcast called DJ'S COMICS CAVALCADE. During its run I covered the first twenty some odd issues of GREEN LANTERN...and every time I referred to Tom Kalamaku, I would express my dislike for his nickname most clearly.
Great voice again, Sasha! Nice modulating sinister sharky tones.
I think the best Green Lantern/color yellow moment was Ganthet's Tales by Larry Niven. Hal Jordan flew fast enough that the green energy from his ring shifted to the color yellow and he beat an opponent who was vulnerable to yellow.

I think the narration boxes in this one are unreliable. Why, you ask? Because if TS Smith was so 'highly evolved' he would OBVIOUSLY be trying to marry Lois Lane!
The bit about millions of years of evolution resulting in still just a normal shark was absolutely hilarious. The rest was funny, but that was the best.

YES TIGER SHARK! It is now my dream to write an all shark villain story for DC.
This isn't a favorite yellow defeat, but a victory. There was a "Tales of the Green Lantern Corp" backup where an alien Green Lantern was trapped in a yellow sphere. However, she was a mother who had bought some sort alien version of B'LOONIES for her daughter, and she used it to coat the interior of the sphere with substance so it was "red" from her side. She then was able to shatter the sphere with her ring.

Silver age Green Lantern and the cartoons based on him are what made me HATE Green Lantern as a kid because the powers were SO nebulous!
First rule of silver and golden age comics... don't think too much about it...because the mayority of that is bad science even for the time...

Oh forget the color yellow... let's talk about being weak to wood... as in dead trees kinda wood. Now that's a ridiculous weakness.
It makes sense that there would be a substance that a power ring couldn't affect. And wood is common enough to be a real problem. Much easier to write in while facing yellow is often very contrived. There are issues if you try to figure what it is about the wood that would make it immune. But I don't hate it.

That Aquaman storyline, where we find out that this "Karshon" guy who's been hanging around for months is secretly The Shark, is probably his best moment. His worst is Adventure Comics #459, where he decides he wants Wonder Woman to be his "mate". It's exactly as cringe-y as it sounds.
Oh god, I read that issue. It was terrible.
And the fact Karshon is based off a “predator” animal and try to mate with Wonder Woman, this doesn’t make things any better.
What's interesting is that the Shark is such an incredibly picky eater... which many sharks actually are in real life. Except the tiger shark. Tiger sharks are like shitty Kinder Surprise eggs, where if you cut one open after catching it, you'll find it stuffed full of flotsam garbage that it ate indiscriminately. If it fits into their mouth, it's a good Yelp review in their book.

What do you mean invisible yellow field? Did the Shark discover *gasp* Ultrayellow light? (like Ultraviolet, but in the yellow portion of the spectrum that human eyes cannot see?)
