I mean, Hal could have like John or Guy's original origin from the comics, where he was a backup lantern. It could even be a similar thing to Hal and Guy, where the ring found both worthy but went to Hal because he was closer, it's just that Kyle was closer than Hal when Abin Sur crashed, then the Guardians sought him out later. He may have been chosen as a backup during starcrossed or savage times when John lost his ring and 2814 had no GL during that time so Hal was appointed around then, then he'd just be off training like Kyle was when he was trapped in off-screen land. So he wouldn't have responded because he was off Oa and not trained yet on how to get to Earth in time to fight Amazo.

My head cannon is that Kyle and Hal just traded origins, when Kyle goes to train on Oah they select Hal as “temporary” green lantern of sector 2814. Then as he proves himself worthy they let him keep the ring. Hal doesn’t join the JL because one of the lanterns has to focus on protecting 2814

Honestly? They merged Jason’s origin into Tim’s Robin, so they could just use Kyle’s real origin as the DCAU Hal Jordan origin. That way it makes Hal the only Green Lantern for a while and accentuates the idea of Hal being the Greatest Green Lantern (since he’d be the only one and basically saves the entire GL corps)
I don’t think it’d be a real stretch to do that nor do I think people would take too much issue with it since the DCAU Tim/Robin is pretty universally liked.

It's confirmed that hal Jordan in the comics is a cruz point for the gl corps. Jessica cruz and Simon badge both got sent back in time, accidentally revealing hal being a focal point that should never be tampered with. That's the most likely explanation. Its confirmed that hal was able to use his ring immediately before anyone else because he had the willpower to operate the green lantern ring himself. So they know he's a critical person for the corps future.

  • @Avenging_Archer
    @Avenging_Archer 4 роки тому +31

It would be cool if Hal got his own DCAU movie explaining how he fits. They could give him a Booster Gold style adventure where he receives his ring but is immediately taken into a time/dimension traveling adventure that spans the entirety of the DCAU's history (past, present, possible futures), where he pops into the timeline to do heroics and fix stuff and then has to pop back out without anyone being the wiser, thus why people don't acknowledge his existence all that much.
Haven't thought it through but it would be a nice way of explaining away his absence and simultaneous apparent existence in this universe.

What's funny and makes this all crazier is that in the comics, when Guy Gardner was introduced, he was an alternate Green Lantern that got the ring instead of Hal in a kind of what if, but Booster Gold told Guy Gardner to be somewhere else, and that's why Hal Jordan got the ring.
That's just so confusing and makes me wonder if Booster Gold was from the future of the world where I was Guy and not Hal and he couldn't stand Guy 🤣

My headcanon is that GLTAS takes place some time before Superman TAS. Hal Jordan is younger, Sinestro hasn't turned evil yet. By the time we see Sinestro in Superman, he's evil. If GLTAS *is* canon (big if), then I'd say Hal is on the other side of the Universe, maybe mediating things between the Red Lanterns and the Guardians. Explaining why he wasn't with the rest of the Corps when Amazo attacked, because it would have taken him 18 months to get back to Earth.

  • @Dungeonstone

Theory: All of the timey-whimy nonsense in "Once and Future" had some permanent effects.
One of them being that is is now Hal who gets the ring in the Superman Animated episode (thus allowing for Hal's origin on the action figure packaging to make sense) and Kyle's origin is now "Last Green Lantern", given the ring by Ganthet (as per the DCAU comi book story).
This means that it could be that both Hal and Kyle spend most of their time on OA throughout the Justice League timeline, John Stewart stays on Earth and Guy... Well Guy just doesn't get a ring until sometime after JL vs. Fatal Five.

    • @MineKurtMininer

In my head canon, there have been a number of Crises that have resulted in substantial retcons to established lore within BTAS, STAS, TNBA, and so on. In the first instance, I would say that the League existed prior to the debut of STAS, with the BTAS designs used in the Redan, I Love to Read Batman and Superman magazines from the mid-Nineties. Here, we have an established and expansive DCAU that differs considerably from the version shown post-Secret Origins. Also, Mullet-Superman is the standard version of Big Blue. My theory is that sometime before STAS, there was a Crisis event that essentially wiped the slate clean and had a new universe emerge that omitted Hal Jordan as a Lantern along with Barry Allen as the Flash. Batman and his supporting cast retained their history and origins albeit with certain cosmetic changes to villains and an updating of Gotham. With this in mind, one could treat Secret Origins as a quasi-N52 style assembling of the League with significant cuts to its prior history and roster. This alteration would persist until sometime after the end of JLU, when another Crisis would occur and a soft reboot of the post-BTAS universe would return the likes of Hal Jordan to continuity while not causing any major upset to established lore from previous series bar the Kyle Rayner origin story in STAS, which to my mind, is now non-canon. Also, perhaps the events of Far From Home never occurred either on this reset timeline and Kara In-Ze is now Kara Zor-El and is Clark's cousin proper. Perhaps she never departed for the future at all or is still floating in space waiting to be discovered in a Loeb-esque retelling of her story. Anyway, I think the JLU reunion that everyone is clamouring for could be best served with a film that covers all of these Crises and how they affected the different eras of the DCAU - they could call it Justice League: Secret Crisis or something. Maybe if Timm and company really wanted to push the boat out, they could explore even earlier events that predate BTAS with Bronze or Silver Age versions of the League that were variously nullified by each subsequent Crisis. Just an idea.

  • @TheRealRobertBlarg

My headcanon for Hal plays far more fast and loose and definitely doesn't work when you take into consideration some of the details concerning John Stewart's time as a GL as discussed in the actual DCAU. Until we get more clarification, I mostly consider Hal's origin as the same as his comic version. Maybe there are two Abin Surs, a father and son, OR the alien that died that gave Hal his ring was someone else entirely which also works because of the next controversial headcanon: I loosely consider GLTAS part of the DCAU in my headcanon.
It's mostly disconnected from Earth so for the most part, it's not really an issue. The problem is, of course, timeline placement. Sinestro is still a GL and John is considered a new GL late in the show meaning it would HAVE to come before STAS's "In Brightest Day." Hal operating as a test pilot as seen in the aforementioned STAS episode is also fine as we see he continues acting as a test pilot whenever he's on Earth though what he's doing there as opposed to Ferris Air is odd. This headcanon would retcon Hal into being the first human Lantern (or one of the first depending on the continuity of the JL/JLU comics that feature the JSA). GLTAS also conveniently doesn't mention the name of the GL that gave Hal his ring. Therefore, it could be a different Abin or someone else entirely!
The biggest issue here, surprisingly, is how John fits into things. John is established as having been a GL for awhile though I forget the exact dialogue from JL. If one ignores that portion this would actually retcon the four human GLs into their original comic appearance order. Hal is first, followed by Guy who gains a brief surge in popularity on Earth, the next time we see Guy we find out that John has become the new GL on Earth who eventually goes off to Oa since STAS-Abin Sur is protecting Earth. In GLTAS, Sinestro is still a GL but shortly after the show's conclusion, the GLs strip him of his ring (and we know John was around to be part of that event). Sinestro goes off and gets a yellow ring, kills Abin Sur, and Sur's ring finds Kyle making him the fourth human GL. Hal continues to operate mostly off in space while John is protecting the JL with the League and for whatever reason, he doesn't make appearances in JLU when the GLCorps is shown en masse.
And then yeah, like this video states, I don't think "One and Future" is an entirely different timeline/alternate reality where Hal became a Lantern but simply that history was altered briefly to put Hal on this mission.
It's not perfect by any means and definitely doesn't fit into the detail-oriented chronology of this channel that I dig but for me, this is just the simplest answer until if/when we learn more. I guess one the issue are the Manhunters and their role in GLTAS vs DCAU but yeah. That's just me though! In reality, GLTAS isn't part of the DCAU unless Timm decides to retcon it into being part of it.

From what I know, Hal Jordan got his Green Lantern powers before John Stewart and Guy. Hal and Guy worked together a lot when in space fighting other Lantern Corps. Guy also has when helping the Justice League which included John Stewart. Since Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy have become Green Lanterns with Guy knowing both Hal and John, all three are part of the same timeline, existing as Lanterns at the same time, two of them currently with the Green Lantern Corps on Oa and one on Earth with the League.

Totally invented scenario: Sometime after 'Once And Future Thing', imprisoned Justice Lord John Stewart has a will-to-power moment (like Kyle and Jessica in their debuts, and Main-John against Despero) where he is able to undo Luthor's block on his ability to use the ring, and summons it back. Creating havoc while searching for his comrades, he is confronted by Main-John, but the two run into the same problem the two Batmen did, knowing themselves as they do. Worse still, knowledge of his own GLC plus precautions placed on his ring (and battery, summons that too) means that Kilowog et al also aren't any help. Main-John yells that he has to find someone they KNOW can handle a ring that Lords-John knows nothing of, before he can find the other Lords. Batman says he may know of someone, and they find Colonel Hal Jordan and use power trickery to Hyperbolic Time Chamber him up to snuff. His tactics are just different enough that they beat Lords-John, and Batman has the ring & Battery taken back to the other Batman. Hal continues to train from there, with Katma declaring "He's a natural."
    Does it have enough holes?

I have a theory if anyone'll listen. I think that in "In Brightest Day" we are actually witnessing a major timeline branch. In Timeline A, the episode plays out like normal as Abin Sur's ring chooses Kyle Rayner. In Timeline B, Hal Jordan is chosen instead. I believe that when Abin's ring flys off, it already has two candidates in mind and the timeline branches depending on who it chooses. The rings first choice is Hal Jordan and the backup plan is actually Kyle Rayner.
Timeline A - Sinestro is evil
In the episode, we watch the ring fly by the airbase where Hal Jordan works. I take this to mean that the ring is intentionally passing up on Hal. My theory is that Hal has the greater potential to be a better hero, but isn't ready to take on the responsibilities of a Lantern ring just yet. So, the ring moves on to its backup plan, Kyle.
Kyle laments at the end of the episode how he isn't fit for the job, but his work as an artist is just what is needed to put Sinestro out of commission and defeat the more immediate threat.
Timeline B - Sinestro is good
This is a timeline where Sinestro is still an active member of the Green Lantern Corps and also the timeline where Green Lantern: TAS takes place. Abin likely dies by other circumstances and the ring is now free to go with its first choice as there is no immediate pressing threat to be dealt with.

1st in the 30's of the DCAU was Alan Scott, then in the early 1950's he passed down to Guy Gardener, then in the 1970's Hal Jordan, but in the 1980's (83-late 88) was probably fatally injured to the point of death by a recently turned evil Sinestro and prematurely passed the ring to a young John Stewart, who fought the now turned Yellow Lantern Sinestro and had been sent to Oa after training and his training possibly ended around the time Kyle got his Green Lantern Ring in his debut episode. Then he was protecting his sector from multiple threats, possibly in including that of Darkseid's invasion of Earth in Legacy (via Superman as his one Kryptonian army) and even a bit of Green Lantern enemy trouble here and there (this includes Violet Lantern). He kept doing it until the "Secret Origins" events had began to transpire into the forming Justice League.

My head cannon for DCAU Hal's timeline.
Hal becomes GL of sector 2814 before John and serves for a long time, Guy becomes his alternate/replacement during this period but is injured and ends up in a coma (as in the comics) and is replaced by John as alternate, Hal exposes Sinestro's fascism resulting in Sinetro being stripped of his ring and later squiring his yellow ring, Carol becomes Star Sapphire for a while and is eventually freed of the gem, Hal retires and is replaced by John and returns to the Air Force were an old Saber Jet gets his name painted on the nose, Carol becomes a Star Sapphire again and her and Hal's old foes are still active, and John becomes a member of the Honor Guard and is replaced by Kyle on Earth.
Then we get to cannon, wherein Hal's old villains are sitting around a table waiting for a gorilla to give them orders, and Carol and Sinestro still hate Green Lanterns. And Kyle goes back to Oa for more training with Katma Tui, and is replaced on Earth by John.
This brings us to Once and Future Thing, where an alternate timeline Hal never retired from the GL Corps and is a member of the Justice League. And then in the future at some point he returns to active duty along with Guy after recovering from his coma, and they end up as statues in the Fatal Five.
Seems pretty easy, if you just retcon out Kyle stealing Hal's origin in Superman, many give him back his own origin of a Guardian meeting him in a dark alley and saying "hey kid, wanna earn a magic ring?".

I prefer the "For Want of A Nail" interpretation that in the DC Animated Universe, Hal Jordan stayed an Air Force pilot (who may have become an ace during the conflicts against, say, the Thanagarians and the Apokoliptians) never even ever became a Green Lantern, since John Stewart got the main role instead, arguably. However, there are similar universes where he did become a GL, with John Stewart staying a US Marine, as we've seen in places like the Crisis on Two Earths Elseworlds film.
Heck, would even say thay Jason Todd did exist in the official DCAU, yet never found a way to encounter Batman and especially the bloody Joker in full, Stephanie "Spoiler" Brown may or not be a simple civvie with a nice life, "Hush" stayed innocent and unscarred, Tweedledum and Tweedledee died on childbirth, and so on. (And let's not forget that Guy Gardner appears to be a true blue criminal in this universe.)
In short, JL vs. the Fatal Five is also staying an Elseworlds film as of August 2023.

But I am also very forgetful so it probably doesn’t work at all 😅 but even if it doesn’t, I feel like it could still be the case that Hal was a Lantern before everything in the shows and then stopped being one, explaining why we don’t see him and why J’onn implies its just Kyle and Jon around as Earth Lanterns. Also I don’t remember the Hal cameo context for the future stuff, but did he introduce himself to everyone or just the future heroes? Cause if its just the future ones, could just be that he wasn’t as well known. And if its everyone could be he was a Lantern far enough back, that no one really knew him and that Hal was from an alternate time where he was *still* a Lantern, along side Jon and Kyle. I don’t know what his origin would be though. Abin Sur’s twin brother who has the same name because… their aliens and thats how they handle twins on their planet >_> yeah that works. Here’s my theory: Green Lantern TAS is a prequel to the entire DCAU. Nothing in their continuity really explains Hal’s origin, so Hal could’ve had a different origin in the DCAU while Kyle had his original. Hal stayed off-world doing stuff in the distant reaches of space, coming back to find out that the Guardians got a new Lantern to replace him in 2814 - Guy Gardner - with mentions of John Stewart getting a ring shortly after. Guy went off-world shortly after John joined the Corps, and Kyle joined up while John was in space. Now Jessica Cruz got her ring now that John /and/ Kyle are in space!

When they arrive they arrive they find themselves in the middle of a war on Mars, where a new group of aliens have taken over the planet years earlier and driven the white and green martians into hiding. Hal is then recruited by the Lanterns of the time while Sinestro continues to scheme in the background for a few years more than likely making deals with the new Martian leaders for resources. Sinestro then returns with a surprise assault on the Lanterns and nearly takes them out until Hal's temporary replacement takes him down. My head canon is that the Green Lantern Animated series is canon.
Hal Jordan was the first Green Lantern of Earth (if Alan Scott wasn’t). Probably around the time of Batman The Animated Series.
The GL animated series takes place primarily in deep space so I’m absolutely fine with this happening before Justice League.
Then Guy Gardner was the second. He was left on Earth for a while as Hal was busy patrolling deep space and fighting the Yellow and Red Lanterns. Eventually he goes off to help Hal in space.
Then something happens and that causes Abin Sur to return to his sector but is killed. He passes the ring on to Kyle Rayner.
Kyle Rayner is called to Oa and John Stewart is chosen to be the next lantern of Earth...
Then whatever happens with Jessica Cruiz I guess.
(Full disclosure, I don’t care that much about the tiny details, that’s just the broad idea I have in my head)
I guess you’d have to explain how Kilowog can be in DCAU shows and the GL animated series, but since the GL animated series ends on a cliff hanger, and we don’t know how it turned out, I assume that Kilowog made it back to his sector, but Guy and Hal stay out in deep space with Razor and they continue battling Yellow Lanterns or whatever... since we hardly see any of them in the DCAU

The question then becomes was he? Just like in the regular comics. I've always gone with the assumption that he was and that Chronos just temporarily corrected the error. Kind of like how I assume Booster Gold built the vanishing point castle, but at the same time, Chronos could have built one just like it at the other end of time in the Legends of the DCU comic that you guys wrote. I got an idea. Batman and Harley Quinn had Powergirl. Now powergirl, assuming she follows her usual origin, is from an alternate universe... unless that one was supposed to be Galatea but we'll ignore that for now. If she is from an alternate universe, maybe Hal Jordon also came over from that same alternate universe where he has his original origin so maybe the box is right, just they didn't mention a critical part. Of course that means there is now 2 Hal Jordon's, unless maybe the original died... Okay, this is getting awful complicated...

Just wondering, will you guys ever do a video on the Batman Vengeance story and where it fits in the timeline?

Honestly, I saw the comment notification preview just say “Just wondering, will you guys ever do a video on...” and I thought to myself “Probably.” ;)

In theory, we all exist in the DCAU, and so I like that Dick Grayson quit as Robin the month and year I was born.
And because I'm a total dork and maybe a little crazy, my headcanon is that any version of my from a fictional universe I like is also the thing that makes it different. Like being a hero, powers or not, in Marvel or DC things, and then like a wizard in Harry Potter, Pokémon trainer, digidestined, SPIDER RIDER, etc.
Calling all spider riders! I don't think I've seen an actual episode of that show.

So they retconned Hal Jordan in confusingly and Barry's still just a guy somewhere I guess. Doing forensic science.

This is the second best use of the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme in the Wdb fandom.

Rewatching this and Hal Jordan fixes the Warhawk plothole? Kinda funny lol.
