    Thank you! Thank you for sharing your hard story with us! It feels so good to know that even a pro like yourself (yes, I consider you a PRO!) can do things to harm your orchids. It always breaks my heart when I do something that harms them. I do use it as a learning tool and don’t make the same mistake again!

    I lost several orchids this summer. I live in Florida, US and put my orchids outside during the summer and we’ve had a very wet summer. I wasn’t really paying attention until they started dying. I’m so sad. I lost some very nice Cattleyas and phalaenopsis. I have learned my lessons and will be very careful now about watering 😢

      Same here 😢. I live in Winter Park, Fl. I am currently nursing 5 with a mix of crown rot and burned leaves from leaving them in a not shady enough area. 🤦🏼‍♀️

      I thought I was the only one. My phal of 6 years suddenly started turning yellow, and it took months for it to die of stem rot. One leaf at a time from oldest leaf to youngest. Had a hot and wet summer, which I thought they would like, but it looks like both were too much for it. I'm in NY

    I lost all of my orchids a few years ago to thrips, and it destroyed my drive to continue the hobby. I just felt like checking in, because I remembered this channel was a huge part of my hobby. This year I acquired two jewel orchids (both ludisia & macodes) to start small (because moss and bark projects are out of my abilities), and I finally, finally got my grail to bloom. I've been dreaming of a cattleya recently, but I'll have to really take it slow. I'd hate to have another thrips incident, upside is they seem to hate steam cleaners, because I've had absolutely 0 since we steamed down areas of issue.

    Hi Danny, we're all sorry for your loss. Unfortunately this is the pain basically every grower goes through... be it a beginner or a seasoned one. I visited recently a grower who cares about 500 cattleyas and when I wondered if he ever lost any... you can imagine the answer :) When something like this happens, I can complain a bit. But when it comes down to it, there is not an empty space left. It is an open one.

    I'm so sorry, it's never a pleasant situation. I too loss 3 of my oldest and largest orchids due to stem rot. Never happened before until I moved into our new home smh, still figuring out temperature, humidity, etc... But I'm happy that they bloomed so nicely in my care beforehand.
    Thanks for sharing the ups and downs, good, bad and ugly

    Like a couple of other ppl wrote, I also use a pump sprayer with the nozzle unscrewed so it pours like a gentle hose. It really depends on the design of the sprayer. I had cheap ones which the trigger was less responsive. I bought one with smoother trigger action and was more expensive. I just have to make sure the initial high pressure squirt is facing something safe (a cattleya). I’m happy with this system for my situation and that’s what I think is important - everyone will find something slightly better suited to them. And if you’re not happy with it, then the internet is a wonderful place to look for other ideas like your channel 😊

    I also have that watering can (in green) for many years. It’s great for all the reasons you mentioned. I use it for all 100+ of my potted orchids/plants. So easy to direct!

    Years ago I used to know a girl named Dannie (spelled that way) and believe it or not her older sister was named Michael, they called her Mike. Fortunately her brother's name was Richard (not Rachel) and they did call him Richard.
    I appreciate the orchid knowledge you share, I am a novice and have been learning a lot from your channel. I use a watering can that operates just like yours, has a very similar spout and it works quite well.

    Even the most experienced people makes mistakes sometiems :) thanks for sharing! Recently had a HUGE outbreak of thrips in my collection (probably 100 orchids now?) and really felt like this was the end of it all and that my orchids would just die and id have to give up the hobby... however it seems to be going better now after agressive treatment and here in Norway winter is closing in so luckily i got it all sprayed before the cold arrived.. just crossing my fingers that it's not gonna flare up again during the winter bec OHBOY idk what to even do then.. also struggling alot to find the right pesticides here in Norway, and importing them is just a whole nother story.. ohwell the thrips will not get the better of me

    Sorry about your losses. I just recently loss a cattleya to bacterial root rot.. everything appeared fine. She was growing fabulously giving me plenty of new growths, started making flower buds then one day I went to check on them (do it daily) and she was gone. Black squishy rhizome, and black running up all pseudobulbs.. Never got to see her blooms.. one day she was fine visually the next day..she is gone.

    I buy my reverse osmosis water. I am also on the second floor, where I have my orchids. I used to have those huge water jugs like you have and bought a battery pump. It was a pain, so I just started buying smaller gallon-size water. I use a watering can similar to yours.

    Hey Danny, thank you for sharing both the ups and downs of your orchid growing. You have been a huge enabler of my orchid obsession. 😂 I wanted to comment that if haven’t tried already, you may be able to unscrew and remove the nozzle from your pump waterer which will allow you to have more of a “flow” than a “spray”. Also don’t pump too much pressure at a time to keep the flow low. I’m off now to research how to care for a Monnierara Millennium Magic ‘Withcraft’ that I just got. I believe it is somewhat deciduous and this my first attempt with this so plenty of learning to do!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  10 днів тому

      Hi, yes I initially unscrewed the cap but the pressure is waaaay too low and watering takes twice as long 😕 that watering can has the ideal flow I wanted to recreate but failed 🤭 and yes the millennium magic is deciduous, it takes about the same care as other Catasetum type orchids :)

    Thank you for sharing videos like this. I’m in the process of losing my final two orchids after trying to switch them from ice.
    I’m not sure how I’ve kept them alive for four years on ice!

    So sorry for your losses. I saw another video where the girl had the same problem, and she solved it by removing the spray nozel at the tip. Is that piece of yours removable? Apparently the water flows much nicer that way 😊

    Sorry this happened! I lost two of the fragrant phaleanopsis orchids I got at the grocery store to stem rot!! They were the same variety. Insanely productive. Those orchids had produced so many flower spikes-even under their medium!!- that this left a lot of gaps in the leaves which collected moisture. I must have gotten some water in there and they went from thriving to dying in no time 😢.

    Danni. As far as watering cans go, I think the one you are using is, in my opinion, the most practical. I thought long & hard before ordering the one I am currently using....big mistake! The spout comes from nearer the top of the can, so when I go to pour it tends to spills over the rim. Consequently, I can't fill it to the capacity of 1.5 ltrs. I also tried the pump sprayer and was not able to control it well enough, causing quite a mess. Ended up going back to mixing my water/fertiliser in a bucket and using the watering can filled with a 1 litre jug. I hope that all makes sense.

    Sorry you lost some of your Orhids Danny. It's upsetting when it is one/s you really like. I bought a bunch of Phalaenopsis earlier this year and all but two died from crown and root rot, I did not inspect the Orchids before I purchased them and I suspect the shop where I bought them from does not know how to water Orchids and just sprays them with water from a hosepipe.

    For your crown rotted orchid I recommend making a propagation box to put them in. Techplant on UA-cam has a tutorial on making them. I have some for nursing my cuttings and sick orchids and they work well.

    So sorry about your orchids! I appreciate you showing the bad with the good though. I struggle i feel liek my orchids will do so well for a while and then suddenly be half dead! I feel like im constantly rehabbing some. I am in the US near Chicago so its hot in the summer but much colder and darker in the winter, do you think your layering/watering technique would work well? I feel like I've tried so many things and they all end up the same. I have almost all phalenopsis.

    Question: Is there a reason you do those layers (moss, bark, moss) vs. just mixing it all together? Or are the layers just an easy way to get equal amounts of both? Sorry to hear about your watering woes! But thanks for sharing the warning.

    For the last 2 weeks I have been trying to revive this, phalaenopsis orchid that suffered a really bad case of root rot. I did everything from cutting off the dead roots, putting it in a vase with New Zealand sphagnum moss in light shade in my south east facing bathroom window. Even with watering, humidity from my shower, as well as taking the plant every few days and dipping the remaining roots in water for a few minutes (trying not to get the crown wet )the last remaining leaf it has seems to be withering and dying. I moved the orchid to a different spot just in case the heat from the shower might be too much for it. But other than that, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong :(

    Sorry to hear that you lost orchids. I have always watered my pals overhead and never had problems. I use city tap water, and I am just wondering if RO filters out Cyanobacteria you mentioned you had problems with with a layer of sphagnum on top. I am not sure if leaf rot is caused by being wet for some time or something possibly in the water? Love your videos!

    • @nitawal
      @nitawal 10 днів тому

      Same with me. I use our city water also and often have so much water in crown with no problems. I do remember someone saying that crown rot can be caused by lack of calcium. We get calcium naturally in our city water.
