    In late winter, my husband and young daughter picked out a pretty mini orchid for me (purple) from a grocery store. I really liked it, and with your tips from other videos, I did my best to keep it alive, but unfortunately it didn't make it. I t had root rot and then stem rot. I tried my best but knew it was a bit of a losing battle. I learned a lot though and will try again. This time I will pick out my own orchid, because now I know what to watch out for. Thanks for all the tips!

      I agree. The other thing is that she never says there's just one way to do things, and explains her choices thoroughly; so even if you're experienced with orchids, you get more education about other possibilities that can get you better results. That's where this channel has really helped me. And I too prefer more detailed tutorials that come with *rationale.*

    Just the video I needed! I was wondering which potssize pots to get from repot me. My local store has all its orchids on very cheap as they've all lost their flowers. I just picked up 2 minis for 4.99 and 1 medium for 8.99. The regular sized ones are only 15 but I have 2 already and they take up a lot of space so the minis are my favourite. I might have to go grab a few more for the price tomorrow. It'll be kind of fun to see what colours I end up with too!

    I have hopefully saved my mini. I had repotted it but it was becoming dehydrated very quickly and was limp and wrinkled. I repotted it again and compacted the mix. I have bee watering it daily and it is looking a bit better, but it seems to still not retain water very well even after soaking. Should I add perlite, vermiculite, sphagnum moss, or what do you suggest? Thanks!

  • @viivi_kp
    @viivi_kp Рік тому +2

    So glad you update the repot tutorial again. I have a question. How do you know when to "fix" a newly repot orchid and when you should let them recover on their own. I just changed my collection medium from bark to moss and bark mix. In 2 days, my Prosthechea's pseudobulb started to shiver. I really want to unpot everything and change the medium but I'm afraid I will stress them more and they might die (because the plant has some dead rots in its old medium). if I don't unpot and let them be, how should I take care of a stressed orchid after repot?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  Рік тому +3

      Hi, in the first month or so you can unpot, the roots didn't grow yet so you won't break anything important. If you think you have dead roots in there, better to re repot!

    I repotted a mini Phal about 10 weeks ago that I rescued. It was in a tiny pot, really just in a plug. It was dehydrated & had black roots that I cut back. It seemed to be doing fine after the repot, and I was happy to see two flower spikes growing. In the last week or so, one of the flower spikes has started to turn black at the end and is slowing dying back. It doesn’t look like bud blast to me, as the buds are barely formed and it involves the flower spike as well. Any suggestions as to what I can do for this?

I have a few miniatures and about two months ago I put them in the 14 cm pots because they didn't fit in the 12 cm ones with the root system they got but the leaves aren't that big so it looks sort of strange. I'm sure the leaves will get bigger once they aren't stressed due to thrips. I just wanted to ask what's the largest pot you use for your mature miniature orchids?

    Hi! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately and find them so interesting and soothing! My mom was gifted an orchid for her birthday in march and she really enjoyed it for a while, but after some time I noticed it was starting to kind of slowly die… knowing she has a habit of over wateribg plants and orchids are kind of hard to care for, I took a look at the roots and noticed they were mostly all rotten. I decided to repot it to try and save it for my mom’s sake, but at my local gardening supplies shop I was only able to find a pot as large as the one you have for your 2-year mini phalaenopsis… furthermore, I was only able to save two roots about 3-4 cm long… Now it’s been two days since the repot and the orchid doesn’t seem to be thriving, should I keep hoping for a miracle?

    Dani, I love this and I will recommend this to my friends .. but .. for myself I would actually need a continuance - in sense of what to do after a year, two :) .. my mini-phal has benefited tremendously .. I have done exactly what you recommend here a year ago .. my mini-phal has since bloomed twice, grew 3 new leaves, a ton of roots and now after a year I do believe she is ready to make another repot, but I am really unsure if I should let her in this pot only replace the bark, or if she should go up a size .. should the pot get more deeper or wider .. I mean .. I will probably just experiment and see what happens (like I do with other orchids I have), but .. perfectionism is a mean company at this point with my mini-phal :D

      I would like to add that using an inexpensive small device called TDS (total dissolved solids) meter helps immensely when taking care of epiphytic orchids, especially for beginners.
      For robust and healthy Phalaenopsis, I would call TDS values above 200 ppm (parts per million) as potentially problematic long-term, I would recommend stretching tap water with distilled / reverse osmosis / rain water if it is harder than 200 ppm.
      The problem with Phalaenopsis orchids lies in wet-dry cycle they prefer: shortly before drops of water evaporate, the salt concentration skyrocket and can burn the root tips.
      Therefore, consider frequent flushing of the medium with distilled water until the TDS value of the flushed water drops down to approx. 70 ppm and don't water aerial roots with tap water (or flush them immediately with distilled water afterwards).
      By the way, I measured the TDS value resulting from applying the recommended (by the manufacturer) amount of liquid orchid fertilizer I bought at the local garden center to distilled water: it was 800 ppm 😮 That's really high.

      I have hard water that's softened, so I can't use mine either. I have access to fresh water during the summer months and save it in plastic gallon jugs every fall, to use through the winter. If you don't have this option maybe there's a grocery store where you can refill gallon jugs with reverse-osmosis water for just cents. It's MUCH cheaper than buying distilled or "spring" water.

    Grocery store and the Miniature was also bought Walmart and sent from Garden company. No instructions of course. I see you water and don't use ice? Is water like warm water I've heard to use like warm and the watering says an ice cube I stopped the ice cube with my first one..Thanks for any advice Sorry so long wanted you to fully understand and not have to repeatedly go back and forth to help me out. Oh yes I've fed it Orchid food acidic from Lowes. The old one only. That hasn't helped bloom either.
    Take Care Bless you for your help and these videos. Sheila

    I got a mini phalaenopsis last week from the store I work at. Its flowers started to fade so we could no longer sell it. Poor thing was literally thrown in the thrash can. No drainage holes in the pot, it was filled halfway with water and potted in coco peat. All but two leaves fell off when I took the plastic sleeve off. I can see 4 old flower spikes that were cut off previously. I repotted it and cut the flower spike. The roots were surprisingly healty though, but being thrown in the thrash definitely did not help its already poor condition. Keeping my fingers crossed it'll make it, it's very sad little plant right now.

    Hi ...love your channel and advice! I am going to try to repot an orchid I have had for 2 years that has never flowered since first ones were finished. Plant looks healthy roots ??. It is in a 3 inch pot. Moving it up to a 6"?? Too much?? Also I am from Canada so purchasing from USA always gives me issues at customs. Anything you can suggest? Thanks!!

    • @snowyminnesota6028
      @snowyminnesota6028 Рік тому +1

      If MOG doesn't get back to you - the standard advice on this is to go up one inch at a time. But my bet is you could go to a 5" if you have a lot of healthy roots that you don't want to try to cram into a 4" pot. 6" is probably over the top.
      At repotting time I always make my decision based on the size of the root ball. If I'm going to break or crowd roots in the "next size up" I go for the next one after that. Or even the next one.
      Re your plant not flowering: there are lots of possible reasons for that. Fertilizer regimen, type of water, amount of light, cooling period in the fall, all can play a part. Sometimes I've noticed that a plant that bloomed very heavily, maybe even twice in a year (!), or for a very long time (sometimes 6-9 months), will take at least a year off. MOG has lots to say about all of these, and since orchids grow slowly we do have some time to watch the videos. :D

    I have never grown orchids before but I want to try. In my area the only place that has orchids for sale is a garden center that clearly doesn't know about epiphytic plants. They were charging $60 for an orchid that was in bloom and i just can't fathom paying that much for something i am just learning about. On Etsy, there are sellers that will sell a random selection of orchids at a much cheaper price, like 6 for $30 or something. Is that a good way to go? I know I'll have to get all my own potting supplies but I am not worried about that part.

      I've paid $7-10 US at big box stores for mini phals, and regular size phals go for $20-30 each in my area. If you have Lowe's or Home Depot near you, they may have some right now as I've seen them recently.

    Hi everyone. I do have problems with tiny little larvae I my potting mix. I don't know what Insekt it is but some of my pots are alive so to say. What can I put into the water to kill the little ones but that won't harm the roots? Is neem oil in the water a n option or will that harm the roots as oil prevents water absorption? Is something like bi 58 or what it's called safe for orchids?

I re-potted it in moss, but the moss later developed a mold smell. So I re-potted it now in Brockytony 4-8mm pink clay pebbles after clearing away the dead roots. Hi, Danny. I have a dilemma: after start developing new roots, pretty soon some orchids stop the process and those roots remain small. Not in Blooming season. Air humidity: 60-70%, 20-22°C; medium: bark, watering schedule: when medium is dry (that often happens after almost 14 days). Fertilizing once in 2 weeks (diluted). Thanks

    • @iljaseklervl
      @iljaseklervl Рік тому

      Do these roots remain small with root tips still green (even if very tiny) or with root tips having turned black?
      The former means orchids stop root growth on their own e. g. because 22°C is too cold for many Phalaenopsis hybrids.
      The latter means root tips have been burned and irreversibly damaged because of contact with salts, mostly from touching the surface of the potting medium with salt deposits or from watering with tap water or water with excess fertilizer and not flushing with distilled / reverse osmosis / rain water often enough. Often enough for aerial roots means: each time.

      @Ilja Sekler No root rot and black color. They remain small and with still green tips. Thank you very much for your answer, the temperature must be the reason. I wait for the summer.
