Hi I have some orchids that I'm not sure how to take care of them.
1Dendrobium moniliforme
2Epidendrum Quitemsium
3Oncidium Sphacelatum( it has black spots on the leaves
And I have a phaelenopsis which has a keikie on the flower spike. Please help
I'm an orchid newbie. My tiny orchids are in only a 2" bottom 2 1/4" top and 3" high. What size pot should I repor them into? You didn't mention the dimensions of the pots
@@Dee-wv1fg It showed when the repot me page flashed on, 3 in pot...
I accidentally dropped my phone when I saw how large your mini has grown through the years. Minis have a special place in my heart, I feel like they’ve been the easiest to take care of, and you see results so quickly. Thank you as always for the great videos
That orchid at 3:24 is legit the most beautiful plant I've seen
I was given a beautiful large orchid Phalaenopsis a few months ago, fell in love with it and so now I have a tiny one. So I appreciate these directions, I'm going to repot the little one today. Thank you.
I wish I had known about you and all your excellent repotting tips before I repotted my orchid… I lost it, but I’ll find another one now and use your videos to hopefully keep it alive. Thank you!
In late winter, my husband and young daughter picked out a pretty mini orchid for me (purple) from a grocery store. I really liked it, and with your tips from other videos, I did my best to keep it alive, but unfortunately it didn't make it. I t had root rot and then stem rot. I tried my best but knew it was a bit of a losing battle. I learned a lot though and will try again. This time I will pick out my own orchid, because now I know what to watch out for. Thanks for all the tips!
Thanks and LOVE the black kitty ears headband ❤
I wished I saw this earlier because I’ve repoted my mini phal 😂 Also, that cat ear is so adorable!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I care so much about my mini orchids, and watching this video showed me a lot of mistakes I was making. Thank you for sharing and teaching! 💜
Loving the new format keep it up!
That purple mini is SO beautiful.
Thank you, I am using your beginner guides. I am excited to see growth!
Hi Danny I just got one so im excited to watch this video thank you blessings 🙌
Your hair band is cute! 🙂
Hi Danny, I do enjoy your care videos, I am always learning something new. Thank you so much.
Absolutely amazing ♥️
Been loving mini phals lately, and i cant wait for them to grow bigger in size and have wonderful bloomshows!
omg perfect timing my phalaenopsis equestris was just delivered today!!
Thanks so much for this, i gave up on minis but maybe I'll try it again!!
Hi Danny thank you again for teaching me i love all your videos amen 🙏
I love your video.s I'm so into the mini phals and have been binge watching your
I have gotten 4 mini phals..so far..❤❤❤
I got a mini for valentines and she’s just now dropping her blooms so this is right on time. I’ve repot my other orchids but they are full size lol
So helpful! Thank you so much!❤
Excellent and helpful video! I started with orchids in 2007 but used sphagnum moss in the beginning with sad results. So glad to have found your channel. Many thanks! 💕
Excellent video.
Very helpful!! Thank you!!
Thanks for your advice.
💚👍Great information , I'm a new owner of a no name just add ice orchid. I've learned alot , Thank you!!🙏✌
Dani you are brilliant at what you do n your baby phals are gorgeous n the purple phal was absolutely gorgeous ❤ n I wish I could do what you do with them
Great show thank you 😊
So happy I found your channel. I am still new to orchids and was tired of channels that give advice using "things around the kitchen" directions. Your instructions are clear and concise. Hope to have better luck with my orchids using your instructions. Thank you.
I agree. The other thing is that she never says there's just one way to do things, and explains her choices thoroughly; so even if you're experienced with orchids, you get more education about other possibilities that can get you better results. That's where this channel has really helped me. And I too prefer more detailed tutorials that come with *rationale.*
❤ from England.Thanks 2024.
Hola! Me gustan mucho tus vídeos son muy interesantes
Im definitely interested to see how a self watering pot works for orchids!
I can't resist repot when i buy a new phal hahahaa
Esa corteza me parece estupenda
I’ve had mine for like 2 years but feel like I’m still new to orchid care . I use your videos ALL THE TIME when I feel like something is off with them so thank you very much for guiding me lol. I was just wondering, how often do you change the medium in their pots when it’s bark?
Just the video I needed! I was wondering which potssize pots to get from repot me. My local store has all its orchids on very cheap as they've all lost their flowers. I just picked up 2 minis for 4.99 and 1 medium for 8.99. The regular sized ones are only 15 but I have 2 already and they take up a lot of space so the minis are my favourite. I might have to go grab a few more for the price tomorrow. It'll be kind of fun to see what colours I end up with too!
Thank you for sharing such an easy to understand yet chocked full of great facts video.
I need to repot a phal. Is 1/4 inch pine and fir bark too small? I have pumice and lava rock as well as Monto clay, Kanuma, and akadama
all used for bonsai.Oh, and I have some really good sphagnum moss. Is there a blend you could think of with these 1/4 inch medias I could use?
Thanks again. I enjoy your videos, and the cute cat ears.
Hello, do we bury the roots on the mini or bring them above the soil? Thank you for informational video
Wow i love your purple orchids my killed 3 of them i didn't know what to do with them after they died
Hi Miss Orchid. After watching your video, I decided to give an orchid a try. There were not many options around so I gave in to purchasing one that had floppy leaves and figured I could nurse it back. Can you give me some advice. Thank you in advance.
I have hopefully saved my mini. I had repotted it but it was becoming dehydrated very quickly and was limp and wrinkled. I repotted it again and compacted the mix. I have bee watering it daily and it is looking a bit better, but it seems to still not retain water very well even after soaking. Should I add perlite, vermiculite, sphagnum moss, or what do you suggest? Thanks!
So glad you update the repot tutorial again. I have a question. How do you know when to "fix" a newly repot orchid and when you should let them recover on their own. I just changed my collection medium from bark to moss and bark mix. In 2 days, my Prosthechea's pseudobulb started to shiver. I really want to unpot everything and change the medium but I'm afraid I will stress them more and they might die (because the plant has some dead rots in its old medium). if I don't unpot and let them be, how should I take care of a stressed orchid after repot?
Hi, in the first month or so you can unpot, the roots didn't grow yet so you won't break anything important. If you think you have dead roots in there, better to re repot!
Danny, is 'Mini Mark' any different from any other small phals, as to its requirements for humidity and watering?
Hi Danny thank you for these information. Yesterday I bought 2 mini phals and will be repotting them soon.
If you do not mind me asking, what make you decide to show your face? Nothing wrong with you showing your face 😊
Hi Danny, it may be helpful to beginners for you to give your average summer and winter temps and average humidity xxx
How do you avoid transplant shock when changing from moss or coco peat to all bark? I have read that phals can lose all their roots when you make a big change like that. Your purple mini is glorious!
Hi Danny, I have a very large Catttleya in a 400mm hanging pot, it is coming into bud now with heaps of buds, how can I break it up into smaller pots after flowering as Is is very heavy, thanks Geoff
My new mini I bought came in a really tiny pot, since it’s my first orchid I’m nervous about repotting it but up to the challenge 💪
hi mine was much the same and I now have a 2nd one, one the newest one seemed to quite pot bound so I decided to repot both of them, I was nervous to do it but watching this video again I took the plunge this morning o too early to say if I have done good or not, but I hope you do well with yours.
Me gustaría saber qué tipo de luces tienes y como las has colocado
Pls answer, can u use pebbles instead of bark?
I repotted a mini Phal about 10 weeks ago that I rescued. It was in a tiny pot, really just in a plug. It was dehydrated & had black roots that I cut back. It seemed to be doing fine after the repot, and I was happy to see two flower spikes growing. In the last week or so, one of the flower spikes has started to turn black at the end and is slowing dying back. It doesn’t look like bud blast to me, as the buds are barely formed and it involves the flower spike as well. Any suggestions as to what I can do for this?
Hello do you have any tips to care for big lip phals? I bought one in 2022 and since then the reblooms does not look anything like the original purchase 😢
❤ Hi dear ! First, I want to tell you how much I appreciate you for all your videos. Since I follow you, I know how to take care of all my orchids since the pandemic when I started to collect them. You are really awesome. I want to ask you a very important question. I know you are from România and so am I, but I can't find sphagnum moss anywhere... do you know where I can find it? I know u don't leave here anymore, but maybe you might know. Thank you very much! ❤
So what size did you use? A 3” or 4”?
Hello, thank you for another great video with care tips and I learned a lot from you. I have a few miniatures and about two months ago I put them in the 14 cm pots because they didn't fit in the 12 cm ones with the root system they got but the leaves aren't that big so it looks sort of strange. I'm sure the leaves will get bigger once they aren't stressed due to thrips. I just wanted to ask what's the largest pot you use for your mature miniature orchids?
Hi, well so far a 13 cm pot, but they would appreciate a pot as big as 15 cm honestly 🤣
Given the Orchid roots photosynthesise, need air movement, & Phalaenopsis naturally grow epiphytically. Would putting the clear plastic pot that allows light & air in, into a traditional decorative pot, prevent those processes happening?
Can I repot the miniature phalenopsis directly into a clay pot for orchids
Where to get self-watering pots used in this video? They look very expensive. I live in southeastern United States.
What about “baby orchids” in 1.7 2.0 inch pots? Can you maje a video about that to?
If you live in the north, bring your orchids in for the winter and have a very dry heat in the house potting mixture or watering regimen do you recommend?
I live in Halifax NS🇨🇦🪴 so yeah our four seasons vary! I have placed my indoor plants outside like my Hoyas, goldfish vines, the old Jades, and my old geraniums but I spray the topsoil with bug spray before returning them indoors prior to frost warnings. Might try one or two of my orchid out on balcony but nervous to do so 😎
My orchids are still blooming and it's almost summer. Is this okay?
Hi! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately and find them so interesting and soothing! My mom was gifted an orchid for her birthday in march and she really enjoyed it for a while, but after some time I noticed it was starting to kind of slowly die… knowing she has a habit of over wateribg plants and orchids are kind of hard to care for, I took a look at the roots and noticed they were mostly all rotten. I decided to repot it to try and save it for my mom’s sake, but at my local gardening supplies shop I was only able to find a pot as large as the one you have for your 2-year mini phalaenopsis… furthermore, I was only able to save two roots about 3-4 cm long… Now it’s been two days since the repot and the orchid doesn’t seem to be thriving, should I keep hoping for a miracle?
Get your mom an orchid in a pretty clear plastic or glass pot and tell her green roots are happy and to only water when the roots are white and she'll succeed! 💖🌞🌵😷
Hy Danny! I just repotted a new orchid from moss to bark and moss , it has few healthy roots but now the leaves started to wrinkle and i don't know why. Could you help me please with some advice. Thanks :) I like your channel
Sounds like it has to do with watering, you might be over /under watering it. The Roots will usually tell you if it needs watering, if they are still green don't water
Is it “wise” to repot an orchid that has budding spikes?
Dani, I love this and I will recommend this to my friends .. but .. for myself I would actually need a continuance - in sense of what to do after a year, two :) .. my mini-phal has benefited tremendously .. I have done exactly what you recommend here a year ago .. my mini-phal has since bloomed twice, grew 3 new leaves, a ton of roots and now after a year I do believe she is ready to make another repot, but I am really unsure if I should let her in this pot only replace the bark, or if she should go up a size .. should the pot get more deeper or wider .. I mean .. I will probably just experiment and see what happens (like I do with other orchids I have), but .. perfectionism is a mean company at this point with my mini-phal :D
Sounds like you're doing things right!
My roots keep growing out the slots in those repot meat pots. Is that bad? It looks really weird.
Hi Danny, I wonder if we can repot when flower spike is forming? ( No buds yet) Because when i received my orchids from nursery, the spaghnum moss are full of algae...
yes 👍
Hi miss orchid girl! I enjoy your video so much! I’m a first time orchid grower…question… I have hard water. Can I use hard water to water my plants?
Hi, you can but it's not ideal. It may deposit on the potting mix and deteriorate it faster. It could also burn the roots on top of the potting mix. So keep a close eye on it!
I would like to add that using an inexpensive small device called TDS (total dissolved solids) meter helps immensely when taking care of epiphytic orchids, especially for beginners.
For robust and healthy Phalaenopsis, I would call TDS values above 200 ppm (parts per million) as potentially problematic long-term, I would recommend stretching tap water with distilled / reverse osmosis / rain water if it is harder than 200 ppm.
The problem with Phalaenopsis orchids lies in wet-dry cycle they prefer: shortly before drops of water evaporate, the salt concentration skyrocket and can burn the root tips.
Therefore, consider frequent flushing of the medium with distilled water until the TDS value of the flushed water drops down to approx. 70 ppm and don't water aerial roots with tap water (or flush them immediately with distilled water afterwards).
By the way, I measured the TDS value resulting from applying the recommended (by the manufacturer) amount of liquid orchid fertilizer I bought at the local garden center to distilled water: it was 800 ppm 😮 That's really high.
I have hard water that's softened, so I can't use mine either. I have access to fresh water during the summer months and save it in plastic gallon jugs every fall, to use through the winter. If you don't have this option maybe there's a grocery store where you can refill gallon jugs with reverse-osmosis water for just cents. It's MUCH cheaper than buying distilled or "spring" water.
@MissOrchid What am I doing wrong. I got an Orchid for Valentines several years back I've kept the orchid alive and green It grows leaves just fine I transplanted after the flowers died As you've mentioned.
My husband who bought it for me passed away and I want to keep it alive. Problem is it's never bloomed since the first time? Do they bloom only once a year. If so when? It's about 4-5 years old now. I must not be feeding it correctly all roots are great! Nice and green has a great root system they even grow out from under the bark and moss they are in. I haven't transplanted since the first time Is that a problem Even though didn't get flowers again the next year either. I just don't want to loose it Since he gave it to me I would love to see it bloom Can you help me out please I was on here tonight as I got me a miniature Orchid thinking it stayed small I see they don't haha. They don't specify what type they are Bought oldest at the
Grocery store and the Miniature was also bought Walmart and sent from Garden company. No instructions of course. I see you water and don't use ice? Is water like warm water I've heard to use like warm and the watering says an ice cube I stopped the ice cube with my first one..Thanks for any advice Sorry so long wanted you to fully understand and not have to repeatedly go back and forth to help me out. Oh yes I've fed it Orchid food acidic from Lowes. The old one only. That hasn't helped bloom either.
Take Care Bless you for your help and these videos. Sheila
I was wondering, have you used Pon for orchids before? What are your thought on that type of self watering?
Hi, yes I have several videos on it, just search for them. My conclusion is that it's not for me 😆
@@MissOrchidGirl thank you for coming back to me :) I'll definitely check out more of your videos about it, thank you for your hard work!
I got a mini phalaenopsis last week from the store I work at. Its flowers started to fade so we could no longer sell it. Poor thing was literally thrown in the thrash can. No drainage holes in the pot, it was filled halfway with water and potted in coco peat. All but two leaves fell off when I took the plastic sleeve off. I can see 4 old flower spikes that were cut off previously. I repotted it and cut the flower spike. The roots were surprisingly healty though, but being thrown in the thrash definitely did not help its already poor condition. Keeping my fingers crossed it'll make it, it's very sad little plant right now.
Hi miss orchidgirl , I have a question, does fermented pine bark good for orchids? I got scared of using them again because it killed my 1st batch of orchid , all of there roots died. I want to change my medium to leca to pine / any wood bark I can find , but all i can find is fermented pine bark
Hi, I've never heard of it but the word 'fermented' doesn't sound good in connection with orchids 🤔
Hi ...love your channel and advice! I am going to try to repot an orchid I have had for 2 years that has never flowered since first ones were finished. Plant looks healthy roots ??. It is in a 3 inch pot. Moving it up to a 6"?? Too much?? Also I am from Canada so purchasing from USA always gives me issues at customs. Anything you can suggest? Thanks!!
If MOG doesn't get back to you - the standard advice on this is to go up one inch at a time. But my bet is you could go to a 5" if you have a lot of healthy roots that you don't want to try to cram into a 4" pot. 6" is probably over the top.
At repotting time I always make my decision based on the size of the root ball. If I'm going to break or crowd roots in the "next size up" I go for the next one after that. Or even the next one.
Re your plant not flowering: there are lots of possible reasons for that. Fertilizer regimen, type of water, amount of light, cooling period in the fall, all can play a part. Sometimes I've noticed that a plant that bloomed very heavily, maybe even twice in a year (!), or for a very long time (sometimes 6-9 months), will take at least a year off. MOG has lots to say about all of these, and since orchids grow slowly we do have some time to watch the videos. :D
If you're looking for orchid pots, you can probably find them in a garden center or online in Canada. I know wildfern has used them and she's on Vancouver Island.
@@LulaMae21 thank you!
Hi, I live in the UK, I have tried to order repotme fertiliser, but every product is not available in the UK why is this..
I noticed you didn’t use fertilizer Why? Is it not needed? Thank you so much for your videos for us beginners. ❤️
Hi, yes exactly what @tanshimyeon8238 said 😊
@@RaeneTheFaerie Thank you so much.I was worried because I’ve been using it. 🌹
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you. 😊
I have never grown orchids before but I want to try. In my area the only place that has orchids for sale is a garden center that clearly doesn't know about epiphytic plants. They were charging $60 for an orchid that was in bloom and i just can't fathom paying that much for something i am just learning about. On Etsy, there are sellers that will sell a random selection of orchids at a much cheaper price, like 6 for $30 or something. Is that a good way to go? I know I'll have to get all my own potting supplies but I am not worried about that part.
I've paid $7-10 US at big box stores for mini phals, and regular size phals go for $20-30 each in my area. If you have Lowe's or Home Depot near you, they may have some right now as I've seen them recently.
Hi everyone. I do have problems with tiny little larvae I my potting mix. I don't know what Insekt it is but some of my pots are alive so to say. What can I put into the water to kill the little ones but that won't harm the roots? Is neem oil in the water a n option or will that harm the roots as oil prevents water absorption? Is something like bi 58 or what it's called safe for orchids?
If they are fungus gnats, many people use mosquito bits to make a watering solution for them. It really depends what insect it is though.
Please can you tell us the best position for a mini? Mine are on a north facing windowsill and have bloomed since March, but I’m worried that it will be too cold in winter.
Do you have the option to move it by a south, east or west facing window during the winter months and not on window sill but about 1-2 feet away from window, unless you have sheers
Hi, I received my first orchid in August last year and it is stressing me out. I'm so scared that I will kill the orchid and it was a gift from a dear friend. I re-potted it in moss, but the moss later developed a mold smell. So I re-potted it now in Brockytony 4-8mm pink clay pebbles after clearing away the dead roots. But after watching your video, I'm wondering whether I should have rather bought bark??? I live in South Africa, on the coast and Summer is currently busy coming to an end.
There is orchid potting mix and it usually has cork bark and perlite
Would it hurt to use some moss just in the bottom of the pot I sometimes forget to water my plant
Not really, just trial and error and keep a close eye on the or hid in the beginning 😊
When repotting, should the roots be inside the pot or okay to dangle outside?
ok out too as orchid roots are actually ALL aerial roots ~ the roots are just reaching out twds the humidity ~ they love this!🪴
I've just bought a phalaenopsis that is flowering, but I see a few rotten roots at the bottom of it. Would you recommend to clean it right away from the rotten roots or should I wait until the flowers are gone?
Hi, if it's just a few, but the majority are good, then you can wait a bit more 😊
@@MissOrchidGirl thank you to be always so kind, knowledgeable and lovely ❤
I rescued a mini Phal last week . It was at Publix grocery store. It was being advertised as an Ice Cube -week Orchid. 🤦🏻♀️
My wife bought me one a couple of years ago...its still alive, grows new leaves as old ones die off but its never reflowered...not even a new spike...has good light, keep it in moist spagnham moss so roots are always nice and green and feed it orchid fertilizer...am I missing something?
She has loads of videos on all types of orchids, take a look at her archives!
Ôk 👍
I cut my orchid spike when the flowers died and it never grew back can you tell me why it didn't and I got green roots how can I get them to grow my leaves are growing like crazy but my flower spikes haven't grown back and it's been like 4 or 5 years
Hi, flower spikes don't grow back, but new ones will grow from a different place on the stem. Here is a complete video tutorial on reblooming, hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/n0OIbXk-Pwk/v-deo.html
😊❤
Am thinking of buying my first orchid, which 1 would u suggest for a 1st orchid? New plant parent with only 1 year experience with aroids like monstera, philodendron, syngonium, marantacae, scindapsus, epipremnum, alocasia, and others like ficus, succulents, heliconia, birds of paradise 😌
Still new to orchids but I believe phals/mini phals like these are some of the easiest. I'd bet she's got a video with recommendations in her archives here, along with care videos for many types of orchids.
Haven't bought any since the expert hasn't recommended 🤭
Hi, Danny. I have a dilemma: after start developing new roots, pretty soon some orchids stop the process and those roots remain small. Not in Blooming season. Air humidity: 60-70%, 20-22°C; medium: bark, watering schedule: when medium is dry (that often happens after almost 14 days). Fertilizing once in 2 weeks (diluted). Thanks
Do these roots remain small with root tips still green (even if very tiny) or with root tips having turned black?
The former means orchids stop root growth on their own e. g. because 22°C is too cold for many Phalaenopsis hybrids.
The latter means root tips have been burned and irreversibly damaged because of contact with salts, mostly from touching the surface of the potting medium with salt deposits or from watering with tap water or water with excess fertilizer and not flushing with distilled / reverse osmosis / rain water often enough. Often enough for aerial roots means: each time.
@Ilja Sekler No root rot and black color. They remain small and with still green tips. Thank you very much for your answer, the temperature must be the reason. I wait for the summer.
Can you put more than one orchid in a pot..I ordered from repotme 😊 but ordered waaaaay to big of a pot and ordered 3 at that🤦♀️ this 8” pot is huge!! My orchids are big as well they are not the mini orchids. Can I put more than one orchid in a pot??
Hi, yes you can, just make sure they are the same type (genus) and have the same care requirements ☺️
Hi, I am not so much as a begginer but I am wonderring if there is a rule WHEN TO START FERTILIZING NEW ORCHIDS, AS SPECIALLY MINIS...???
Cause I heard somewhere that orchids which you just purchase, has a big amount of hormones and fertilizers inside of them that there is better not to fertilize them in a first year 🤷♀️I give them fertilizers like any other I have so I havent notice anything different maybe sometimes one of the flowers is deformed and some says that this happens because of too much of nutrients 😳
Hi, I start after about a month, no written rules though, I kinda wing it between 2- 6 weeks depending on the orchid growth rate 😊
Thank you so much for your answer 😊 I love your channel and tutorials they were very helpfull to me ❤
Ooh, a new tattoo 👀 Tell us about it :)
Haha just a little butterfly 🦋
No Surghum moss mixed in ??? I thought u needed it so it doesn’t dry out so fast?
Hi, this is a tutorial for beginners and I explain my choices in the video 😊
Step 1 get another orchid
Step 1: get ALL the orchids! There fixed your comment 🤣🤣🤣
I have a question that you didn't mention, is it or is it not important to use lukewarm water instead of cold water 💦 ? some videos they say to use ice cubes but as I've learned orchids don't like cold ice cubes. I want to know your opinion
she has videos on this subject, search through the channel
Always use water at room temperature, not only on orchids but on any and all houseplants you´ve got. Water that is too cold can shock the roots.
@@sandradegraaff8932 that's what I thought but I have yet to hear Miss orchid mention that when she mentions watering the plants. People who are new to having plants need to know this. I haven't heard her once stay room temperature water when she is teaching newcomers about orchids, I always use Luke warm water & my orchids are amazing
Hi, I always advise lukewarm water, or room temperature (depends on the room temps lol) the ice thing is a commercial gimmick in my opinion 😊
Can I grow my Phalaenopsis Orchid in a glass jar without any water or substrate? I tried to DM but your instagram wouldn’t pull up.
Doesn't seem like a good idea. You may want to look into getting a faux orchid for display
