- I'm out in the campervan on Salmon Safari again. This time join me fly fishing for salmon at the beautiful Styford estate on the river Tyne. The river level was up but the salmon were still obliging and I caught my biggest ever fish on a fine autumnal day.

Great day on the water, nice fish
Salmon fishing is just the best! If you don’t catch just being outdoors is awesome In my eyes! Like you said being let loose on someone’s estate! And the feeling you get when you catch is indescribable, I could tell by the look on your face when you was having your cuppa! Well done you, we’ll deserved
Best fun you can have with your clothes on!
It's great because it's so bloody hard. The amount of times I have nearly snapped my rod over my knee or exploded into a tirade of the foulest langauge known to man! When you get one though....! What a feeling of accomplishment!
That was a strong fish, it wasn't going to give up easily, landed it well. Good sport.....all good fun...🙂👍
Good crack man.Really made up for you mate. some nice memories to see you through the the winter. I like the fact you've kept going with the fly, imho it's the way it should be done, respecting the sport and ultimately more rewarding.👍
Thanks a lot Steven. I love the fact that it's hard. Without the lows the highs wouldn't be near as much fun.
I can't wait for next season and the hunt for my first springer. Standing all day in freezing waters trying to pluck a needle out of a haystack is exactly the kind of thing I would enjoy!
I'm the same steven, when looking for salmon videos on youtube if its spinning i wont bother, i love to see guys putting out a lovely, well executed cast and seeing the take! My season on the findhorn only just finished at the end of sept and already i'm aching for feb 11th, gonna be a long winter 🙁
Defo stick a muddler on the dropper. Something like a teal blue and silver on the point. Dibble the muddler as it swings round
大きな川には大きな魚がいるんですね。時間をかけて取り込む技術が素晴らしいです👍ナイスショット✨
Great 2fish to the hand them fish have been in the river for a week or so lovely colours on them at this time of year but please please get yourself a better net with a bigger opening as I was looking at your other videos & that net is more hassle than it's worth
New net all ready to go for next season. Looking forward to popping it's cherry!
Another cracking video, love these keep it up 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Cheers Chris, they are fun to make and a great excuse to visit new rivers so plenty more to come hopefully.
Magic, thanks. On The Tyne this w/e. Water could be high after all this rain. Hey ho
Cheers, it'll be good mate, could well be perfect. I caught today with the water up a bit.
Another great video we just finished our season in Atlantic Canada had a great season my hardy salmon #2 was busy a great reel cheers tight lines love the videos
Many thanks, glad you've had a good year it's just finished here too. Less fish caught on this side of the pond I fear this year.
This is my favourite beat. I try and get here when I can. I don’t live far away so that’s a bonus. The gamekeeper Eck is great too.
Yes it's lovely water. It's all a bit quiet on the big main Tyne beats so far this year apparently. The north Tyne and given water the south Tyne have been more productive
Is Bywell on the opposite bank. Seem to recognise it - fished it a few years ago but the money they want for it nowadays is over the top IMO. Cheers Phil
Bywell starts at the fishpass on the other bank. You are right about the price especially what Bywell were asking for the back end months. Styford is a little more reasonable and at least only has three rods fishing. I've only fished Styford once but if I could get a rod when the water was right I would consider a return as it is a cracking stretch.
Great to watch this video after meeting you below Felton this afternoon and spotting your go-pro. Hope to meet you again next season.
I'm sure we will cross paths again next season. Hope the lost salmon didn't cause you a sleepless night.
@@abakerslife I'm sure the more you catch, the less the ones that get away matter. I did re-live that battle a few times before nodding off!
@@brianpeutherer2666 I'm not sure about that....I've just lost one on the Tyne today and I think I will still be crying about it come February 1st!
@@abakerslife Oh no. Not ventured onto the Tyne yet. Too big for my single-hander. I did sneak a few hours on the Coquet again and got a couple into the net. Doubling my season's tally! Nice sea trout and a grilse. Hurrah.
@@brianpeutherer2666 A fine end to the season !
😂thank the lord u cleaned and oiled that reel, well done great video, tight lines for next season.
It was overdue some love. Between work and fishing at every opportunity maintenance has been on the back burner.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
Bacon looks a bit raw, cracking fish great video keep them coming
Aye the bacon was raw if he had made one of them for me it would have got launched to the ducks. 😂
You're a pair of a pansies, that's how a real man eats his bacon. It melts in the mouth!
That massive bacon bap you were eating at 1.20 looked the absolute business mate. Where did you buy that???
I usually self cater.
Great video and good catches. Your new net will make things easier but give yourself sone slack line once you’ve netted a fish and make sure you recover them. These were played right out so need held in the current for a good few minutes before they go back.
Many thanks and happy to take suggestions on board. It's learning curve after all.
Awesome!! Cracking pair!! Well dome!! You need to upgrade from the butterfly net!! 🦋
Thanks David. New net for Christmas I think.
A great day and a lovely river , very fishy as you say. Glad the reel is sorted , if it happens again might be a bearing,if that’s what’s in there? It could lock up at the wrong moment and bang 😢.😬
So Dear 🧑🎄 please bring me a nice new net and a shiny new reel. I’ve been so good! 😂
You were saying about your casting maybe your line isn’t exactly suiting your lovely new rod, but if your going for a lesson a good instructor will know straight away.
If like me, I bought the exact line I was told to, but couldn’t really get it to work.
So Called back to the instructor and she threw nearly the entire line across the river 😳. “Bad workman blames his tools”. But if there not matched it can make make it tricky .
It’s more than likely you just need more time with it, the flex is probably a bit different to what your use to, so more miles. 👍👍
Cheers Dave it's definately the workman not the tools. I am just not used to fishing bigger rods so it's taken a little time to get to grips with it. The line I was using is the Hardy rocket taper shooting head which should match it perfectly though I do plan to replace it with a traditional spey line because I don't like all the retrieving you have to do with a shooting head.
I was taught that a spey cast should be effortless but what I'm finding is that the best casts I make with the ultralite are the ones where I really give it some stick. I guess I'm just going to have to be forced to go to more lovely rivers where I can practice with it. Life's a bitch eh?
Oh and Santa it's going to need to be a 3 3/4" Perfect if you are bringing me a reel.
What camera are you using mate? Love your enthusiasm in your videos. Few of us fished the tweed at the back end of this year, cadrona beat and fairnilee, give them a look. Tight lines
Cheers Ben, I use a a Gopro hero 9.
I did have a couple of days fishing the Yair at the beginning of November but the river was in flood and there was nothing doing.
Get a McLean salmon/sea trout net.
Just watched your Styford video and wondered what the access to the river is like as I travel with a Motorhome and I’m looking to perhaps book Styford this year?
Hi, the access through the estate is via a narrowish road/lane. I think you should be fine from what I can remember but I would call Eck the gamekeeper to be 100%. I think there is a phone number on the estate website.
@@abakerslife Thank you. Keep the salmon fishing videos coming I watch them all. 👍
Could I recommend Barry Mitchell for a lesson. Lives Morpeth . Loving your channel btw.
Many thanks, I will look him up.
Shame you didn’t eat them they very good to eat not sure if you know that 😊
Why are Tyne salmon dark brown and not silver like fresh from sea.????
All salmon turn darker once they enter the river and take on their spawning colouration.
There’s been fish caught form my club off the south and main tyne over 27lbs
Sounds like you are in the right club. I was harking back to the 42lb fish that was caught at Styford in the past. I think that's the record for the river but I stand to be corrected.
Over all I do like your reports from your fishing days. But why don‘t you have your pliers ready to use hanging outside your jacket? Why do you try to release the fish out in the current instead in the shallows near the bank, where you can reduce fight-time and you can drop your rod to use both hands for proper fish handling, when the fish becomes ready?
Tight-lines, Steve
Hi, so when I made these early videos I was greener than a can of spinach and like anyone starting out on a new endeavour I had many things to learn. Everyone is a beginner in the beginning and no one knows it all from day one. I would like to think that I have improved in all aspects of my fishing and fish handling over the last year and one of the reasons for that is that I am not too stubborn to take onboard advice from those with more experience. So with that being said I thank you for your feedback.
Stefan...as a follower of Bakers Life myself i also take your advice as a new salmon fisher so thanks. By the way if you don't mind me saying...
."You might like to consider trying..xyz...."
... comes across so much better and less critical and judgey than
"why do you xyz.."
I think Rob took the advice well fair play. I'm now the learner and novice and I'm able to learn from the advice and experience however well expressed or not so hey ho. You're performing a great learning service sir.
Suggestion: If you want or intend to net a Salmon, get a Salmon net rather than a Trout net. Bending fish in a net,,,, bad practice.
Kudos
like your videos
Thanks for the pointer, that was an old film so I've picked up a couple of nets since.
That reel doesent sound like it's in very good shape.
I can't understand house guys go to fish rivers with big salmon running them and you have a silly wee landing net,I use a 30ins net,it is better for you and the fish,it's candidates r ,you are doing great but please get a real salmon net it's so frustrating watching you trying to net those big salmon, but we'll done otherwise.
That's a video from quite a while ago. I've learned as few lessons between now and then including using a bigger net.
Douglas can you kindly recommend a salmon river appropriate landing net? I'm about to try salmon/ spey casting etc and otherwise I'll be using a smaller trout/grayling type net which clearly will be inadequate judging by Robs fish sizes.....in the unlikely event i should be so skillful and lucky as to hook into a salmon.
Two really good salmon, can I ask you what size hook your fly is?and is it a double and a barbed end? Thanks for your last reply
I think it would have been a size 10 double but these days all I use is tube flies and size 12 trebles.
