Salmon Safari 5: Alston, South Tyne.

- I'm out again in my campervan fly fishing for salmon and sea trout in the beautiful south Tyne river. It's a perfect autumn day and I'm joined on the river by my four legged sidekick for some off piste exploring and foraging and fishing.

Fantastic! Well done on your fish!! Lovely stretch of water! In terms of tying your on flies, that's a tricky one! It's a great hobby in it's own right, and no better joy catching one on your own fly! BUT, if your worried about going down another rabbit hole with it, then DON'T DO IT!!! You'll will end up with a fly tying materials addiction and not enough life expectancy left to use it all!!! The other poster about sticking to one or two materials/patterns is a MYTH!! lol
Thanks David. I think you make a very valid point! I can easily see how a person could get sucked into fly tying. I think I will maybe try and do a few (just a few!) and see where it goes.
Loving your videos and what you are doing. That's what I was up to (on the Lune mainly) years ago but not filming. If you have read Falkus remember that the net is a trap and if you hold it under the water to reduce spooking the fish, but hey, I know its easier said than done!
Many thanks, I have heard that the Lune used to be a cracking river though I fear the glory days are long gone now. I will try to keep the net underwater but like you say in the heat of the moment...
@abakerslife Yeah, there was still a lot if water flogging required especially for the salmon. I'm not sure what it's like now as I've not really done any, apart from one night for Sea Trout. I didn't catch any, but there were fish about.
Right opposite our PAAS water where the burn runs in,lovely river.
It is that, looking forward to fishing it again if it ever rains again.
@abakerslife ,I always get on back end of the season,usually see fish,one of my favourite spots,liking the videos mate.

Many thanks, I feel lucky to live where I do being so close to so many great rivers.
My family are from North Shields, And during WW2 my Grandad evacuated the family up to Kirkhaugh to avoid the regular bombing of North Shields, My dad and his brothers spent the wartime years foraging the rivers and land around where you are, Hares, Rabbits, Trout, Salmon and birds eggs. They had pet Jackdaws living in the house. .......Lovely part of the world. And I think you have convinced me to have a day or two there next season. Tight lines !
That way of life is so far removed from modern day living that I think we (as a nation) couldn't survive an exprience like the second world war anymore. We just don't have the skills required to survive.
Glad that I may have lured you back to visit the area. We are spoiled for great fishing here and I'm only just discovering it for myself.

Only one week into the close season and you're wetting my appetite for next year! Looked a great stretch of water at a good height. Gorgeous scenery. Lovely fish. Life is good!
It feels like a long time till February already! Life certainly was good that day.
@@abakerslife I was thinking of getting an Oracle switch rod. Would you recommend it for the Coquet and Tyne? What line do you use with yours?
@@brianpeutherer2666 The Oracle is the perfect rod for the Coquet but probably too small for the Tyne. I have the matching Shakespeare switch line on mine and I absolutely love it. I have met many happy Fed anglers who swear by them. Opens up a lot more of the river than using a single hander.

And you need to invest in a good salmon net. Just a bit of advise, Take your time in getting your fish in, It will tire itself out and then you can lead it in when it is on it's side. Good luck.
You're doing a good job, but so much hand lining! In my opinion cast a bit squarer and mend your line, it'll work better on that fast water. Don't be constantly retrieving. Good luck and tight lines!

This is a great video. Is the footbridge just after the Alston garage on the way out of Alston ? Did you then head downstream ? How did you fish the other bank please ? Much appreciated and well done again keep the vids coming
No you need to drive further than the garage, past the south Tyne railway then there is a track that takes you to the bridge at Kirkhaugh. I'm not sure you can fish the other bank but I'm no expert having only been up there twice. Before I fished I rang the chairman of the Alston Angling Association who was very helpful.

I've seen a few of his videos and he is very good but I am leaving the fly tying alone for now. I will take it up later in life when I have more time maybe.
No dogs allowed on the alston angling waters pal
Yeah so about 10 minutes into the video I explain that after bumping into a local angler I was made aware of that fact and the dog went into the van. Genuine mistake and I make it clear in the video that dogs are not allowed. I booked my ticket through fishpal and always read the fishing conditions which does not state that dogs are not allowed.
So , why are no dogs allowed when Farmer said there is no stock in the fields ? Has there been history of problems ? The dog wasn’t fishing without a day ticket ?
