Thank you so much. Appreciate your videos so much. I have learned so much and just started my weight loss journey on Feb 7th of this year. Before coming across your videos I was following every Keto video I came across and wrote down every recipe I could. Trying to figure out what was best for me and just trying to absorb everything. Consuming omgosh all of my spare time and many spiral notebooks of notes. I did invest in coconut and almond flour, nuts and nut butters a few things!! But made a full list of things I needed to buy. Hundreds of dollars of foods and tools. Feeling guilty really to spend so much money in that way on my self. I feel so foolish now and time wasted. But thank goodness before spending alot of money. "Or should I say throw it away." I feel like I am on the right track now. And have you to thank. I will be following you and let you know in November how my journey turned out. Thanks again.
Janet there is so much info out there on keto that is confusing. I too have done a ton of research and attempted keto a few times before but couldn’t sustain it due to tracking macros, and eating so much extra fats etc. So finding Dr Westman’s approach I am relieved! His easy pg 4 instructions are really refreshing and I am giving it a go. I just started this week and already feel some progress. Wishing you all the best.
I have hashimotos and understand the no dairy consumption, the smallest amount will cause a flare up on my scalp, itchy. I really enjoyed watching Dr Westman and believe he's very helpful with explaining the lactose sugar in milk.
6’3 200lbs., lean and athletic. On high protein/ animal fat and low carb intake because I had lab work done and my triglycerides were high. Been adhering to this way of eating for a month now and I feel great. I do consume non pasteurized cheese and milk however, once a day. It helps with satiety. Eat twice a day typically. I do realize that most people start this journey overweight, so I understand how limiting dairy is sound advice, but I don’t have a lot of fat to spare so I am trying to maintain muscle mass and energy levels.
I equate dairy into the fat category, as most the dairy I buy is full fat. Therefore I eat it in moderation. I don't add extra oils or butters just for the sake of adding fat. I add dairy just for flavor. I'll use a little butter to cook my eggs, add a couple Tbsp of cream in my coffee or sprinkle a light amount of cheese over my dish. Sometimes a small dollop of sour cream here and there. This is what I love about Keto. Never could I do this on a low calorie diet and still lose weight.
I drink a glass of homogenized milk quite a bit, but it is too carb heavy to drink all the time. Mostly I just use it as a craving solution. It's not super high in carbs, but as a mainly carnivore it is pretty much the only carbs I get.
String cheese and mild cheddar might be why my weight loss has slowed down. Might try pure Carnivore for a while just to see what happens and keep cheese out of it. Trouble is, I actually like some veggies and salad. It’s harder for me to give them up than it was to quit sugar and junk food!
what are your thoughts on whole milk full fat plain greek yogurt? I eat Fage, which has a total of 5 grams of carbs, no added sugar and 13 grams of protein. Should I be avoiding it?
Plain yoghurt is good for gut health. I intend to keep eating it regardless of the reply as it fits into my daily carb allowance and has calcium and potassium which I need to consume.
I know the feeling. I could eat several blocks of mild cheese every week if it wasn't so expensive! Maybe cost is my "moderation" process! I don't have weight issues however but it can cause constipation in high doses to many.
Dairy is inflammatory for me and knocks me out of ketosis. I can eat a small amount of feta cheese and grassfed butter. Overall I have to not over do it with fat or I won't lose weight.
I stopped eating dairy for months and stared again. I have already lost down to 118 lbs but reintroducing it caused so much joint pain it was horrible. I think every joint in my body joints that never hurt before hurt. It certainly is not worth that much pain.
wondering how not eating dairy would give you joint pain? I got joint pain from grains, wheat and very bad from rice because its full of arsenic. The other grains are full of roundup. When I stopped eating grains, my joints are so much more fluid and my arthritis in my knee went away.
Good tips as usual. Good to note if you are trying to lose weight or not the health benefits alone of keto are a key consideration. Sometimes all the emphasis and decisions are based on what’s the best to lose weight. I feel if you learn a keto diet first then adjust to lose such as reducing cheese is a good approach.
You do get that Dr. Weston's practice is aimed at helping the obese and diabetic, hence his natural inclination to teach keto from a weight loss perspective. There are many other keto channels with a focus on sports performance, etc..
Yeah, I have the same issue. I have to measure out my daughter's milk to ensure there's enough for her or else I'll down it all 😢 Milk is an addictive substance.
Milk has been a major staple in my diet tthroughout my life, as I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Michigan. I went through serious trouble gettig my mind to drop the dairy addiction, but w/ a little perseverance, I have manged to stay away from my beloved milk. It still calls to me, every time I go to the grocery store, but I no longer pass by the dairy section and that helps. My journey into the Keto diet has just begun and I'm curious where it will take me, nutritionally.
I eat cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, heavy whipping cream, butter. I use the Cronometer app for a rigorous ketogenic diet. Fat is so important because it helps with satiety,
Dr. Westman, I’ve learned useful info from your videos. I wonder what you think of Skyr, Icelandic yogurt, which is lactose-free, low-carb, and high in protein. Is it okay to eat a 150g serving of this everyday while keeping daily total carbs under 20-30 grams?
This is why calorie counting whilst on keto is a good idea if trying to lose weight, you know exactly how much you can have so it doesn't need to be excluded.
I may or may not have eaten to much Cheese this Christmas. In my defence, there's way to much Fromage choices at that time of year. Lol. 🙄🧀 Thanks for sharing this important dairy information. Take care everybody. ❤️🙂🐶
anybody watch Dr. Sanjay Gupta Sunday Morning on CBS? Interesting. I did not know he was a brain surgeon. He had some interesting things to say about Alzheimer's, especially foods.
I don’t get limiting cream. It’s all fat. No lactose. Very dense and a higj energy content. Ising it in a meal would be very satiating. Using heavy cream in the carnivore/keto diet would be a great source of animal fat which is what we want in the HFLC diet. Same with butter. Scratching head here
But why does skim milk help prevent and treat gout flares? I’ve seen this work for me more than a few times. Perhaps as just a medicine is fine when needed.

Dairy absolutely does not work for me. So many keto recipes use diary. Even sheep and goat dairy don't work for me. There is a relationship of my consumption of diary and sores that appear on my face...only on my face. :(
I have that problem too, even though I've ditched the (plain) yogurt and also cream in my coffee. I'm now limiting full milk in my coffee to 50mls., about 1 tablespoon but the problem whilst reduced, still persists. Maybe I need to follow your lead and drop the dairy completely. Thanks for your insight.
I do the macros math and find it impossible to get enough fat (>70%) to be Ketogenic. Even Ribeye is only 60% fat. I add butter for the fat macros. Is this wrong?
OMG... I also thought we had to consume a lot of FAT!😳 some doctors say to eat a lot of fat instead of carbs because insulin is pulled from fat or something like that. 🤔
@@franbrough129 I don't speak from experience here, but from what I understand a lot of people have different experiences with goat milk products than cow milk products. One of the main differences is supposedly the types of proteins. Those in goats milk is less likely to cause an undesirable reaction than cows milk.
@Craig Slitzer. If people had a source of raw A2/A2 cow milk they would most likely have no issues with allergies, etc. I know people personally that have severe milk allergy, not just a lactose intolerance, and when they drink raw A/2 milk they have no issues. They don’t even need to take medication to tolerate the milk. The problem is that most dairy cows in this country are Holsteins and the majority of Holsteins produce A1 milk, which is why so many people cannot tolerate it. Now the Guernsey and Jersey breeds of dairy cattle are mostly A2’s but they are vastly outnumbered in the big dairies that produce the fluid milk for consumption in this country. If all people had access to the A2 protein milk AND raw milk, we would not be seeing issues with milk intolerance. People with just a lactose intolerance usually can drink raw milk and have no problem with intolerance. Pasteurization is what messes up the lactase in the milk. Raw milk has received a bad rap for decades and it is ridiculous! It has been all our family has drank for 25 years as we have our own family cows, which are also A2 milk producers. We have nephews which experienced issues with store bought milk but when they came to our farm and drank our milk they had no problems whatsoever.
@@kellyschroer2114 Thanks for this information about A2 milk. I had no idea about Guernsey or Jersey cows being A2. Thing is, is A2 milk sold anywhere other than farms? Sadly, where I live, there are no sources of this milk or raw milk so I'm taking my chances with cheese and hoping for the best (I don't feel bad with cheese as long as I don't go over the top with the consumption rations :D ), cheese from Marks and Spencers (I have a weakness for mild cheese). Now, I did try raw milk years ago but there were caveats. A), although I experienced an initial euphoric feeling from the initial drink, I had major stomach cramps and some intolerance from the dairy unfortunately. Plus, the one I bought if from only sold it in huge quantities and within under 48hours the milk soured - even in the freezer as I tried to turn it into natural ice cream. I was intolerant to it so it was probably still A1 milk. If I know for sure that A2 milk is sold in some stores, I will look into it and try it out just to see if I can handle the lactose in that. I sadly cannot afford top brand organic kinds but may have to go for something like ALDI/LIDL/SAINSBURYS ORGANIC as I'm sadly not genetically gifted to the point where I can become a cash cow (excuse the pun!)for top tier health. On the plus side, I have an immune system that functions better than the average person in the UK these days as most people tend to lean towards a corn oil diet loaded in sugar toppings and excess carbs, and my body cannot tolerate most carb foods or sugar and even many fruits don't concur with me either.
@@dancercj1491 there are some stores, I think, that carry the a2 milk but it is expensive from what I’ve heard. Which is typical when it is something good for you, the industry always wants to cash in on it and make a profit. They’re not concerned with the consumers health or welfare, just their bottom line. ☹️. But remember even if you find some in a store, it will still be pasteurized and that’s what usually causes the lactose intolerance problem. To my knowledge a store cannot sell raw milk. Also even if you get milk from a farm, it should last way longer than 48 hrs, I have had milk in the frig for up to 10 days before it starts to sour! It lasts longer in the winter months for sure but still, as long as the refrigerator is kept at around 38* it should last fine. And we always use glass jars to store it in, your milk has better flavor in glass.
Hello, So, I am trying to lose weight with Keto and thought that eating until your full sounded great. Then, there is too much fat? So what is the limit on fat? Also, what are the foods with fats already in them? I am thinking bacon, but bacon can have a lot of fat.

Thank you for this clarity. I use butter in my coffee, I'm going to cut back.
Luv Dr. Westman! A man in the know. :)
*I've always wondered about the role of dairy in a keto diet, and this video provided some much-needed clarity.*
I have hashimotos and understand the no dairy consumption, the smallest amount will cause a flare up on my scalp, itchy. I really enjoyed watching Dr Westman and believe he's very helpful with explaining the lactose sugar in milk.
Hashimoto’s here and no dairy for me too.
U should try raypeat approach !
Thank You Dr Westman very helpful
6’3 200lbs., lean and athletic. On high protein/ animal fat and low carb intake because I had lab work done and my triglycerides were high. Been adhering to this way of eating for a month now and I feel great. I do consume non pasteurized cheese and milk however, once a day. It helps with satiety. Eat twice a day typically. I do realize that most people start this journey overweight, so I understand how limiting dairy is sound advice, but I don’t have a lot of fat to spare so I am trying to maintain muscle mass and energy levels.
Thank you Dr Westman. I enjoy your interviews you are very clear in your replies
Thank you🙌

This was very helpful because my BMI has come down to 21-22 with low carb and I like hard cheese.
Great video. Cheese is a weakness for me, so I weigh my portions.
I know the feeling. I could eat several blocks of mild cheese every week if it wasn't so expensive! Maybe cost is my "moderation" process! I don't have weight issues however but it can cause constipation in high doses to many.
How much( in grams) do you allow yourself on Keto a day to keep losing weight ????
You don’t have tooo have … just the protocol. It is so simple: Not, to be confused with easy.
Lactose free milk and cheese is fine, carbs are extremely low if used in moderation.
As an occasional treat, I have goat cheese or sheep's milk cheese. I don't enjoy cow's milk dairy, except for cream. Thanks for the info.
cream and high fat cheese is exactly what i want
#QUESTION. Sugar free jello has maltodextrin, won't that raise my blood sugar?
Dairy is inflammatory for me and knocks me out of ketosis. I can eat a small amount of feta cheese and grassfed butter. Overall I have to not over do it with fat or I won't lose weight.
Thank you for this informative and balanced guidance.
I stopped eating dairy for months and stared again. I have already lost down to 118 lbs but reintroducing it caused so much joint pain it was horrible. I think every joint in my body joints that never hurt before hurt. It certainly is not worth that much pain.
Not worth it FOR YOU!
Others have absolutely no problem.
wondering how not eating dairy would give you joint pain?
Drinking even whole milk gives me intense cravings for more milk. So I stopped drinking it; struggled to control consumption.
Good point. I've come to that realization myself.
I am blessed to do well with dairy. I just wish I could find a fresh source around me.
Have you tried Fairlife lactose free milk.
@@cybersal7 my mom used to drink Lactaid and never lost an ounce with it.
Yeah, I have the same issue. I have to measure out my daughter's milk to ensure there's enough for her or else I'll down it all 😢
Milk is an addictive substance.
Fantastic discussion answers many questions I've had and some I didn't know I had. Blessings to you both.
Thank you 🙌
Milk has been a major staple in my diet tthroughout my life, as I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Michigan.
We are all learning together ... 👍
But don’t these low carb high cal items provide satiety? Without satiety aren’t we destined to failure?
By eating the fat that is naturally found in the food means you will feel satiated.

I can’t believe how it kills your appetite!!! I have to make myself eat
This is why calorie counting whilst on keto is a good idea if trying to lose weight, you know exactly how much you can have so it doesn't need to be excluded.
Another awesome topic! You guys are the best!! 😊
What about yogurt and kefir?
if not concerned about weight.....can you eat all the butter you want? thanks
Pretty much. I eat about 3 or 4 tbsps or more per day. I mean heaped. Big hunks of butter lol. Then a tsp in a decaff coffee too.
I may or may not have eaten to much Cheese this Christmas. In my defence, there's way to much Fromage choices at that time of year. Lol. 🙄🧀
Thanks for sharing this important dairy information.
Take care everybody. ❤️🙂🐶
anybody watch Dr. Sanjay Gupta Sunday Morning on CBS? Interesting. I did not know he was a brain surgeon. He had some interesting things to say about Alzheimer's, especially foods.
I went to your web site, I didn't find free anything. I had to sign up for your mailing list. Then all I found were paid courses, and books to buy.
What about kefir?
Fairlife Wholemilk 5o% less carbs 50% more protein, lactose free. Good?🏋
I don’t get limiting cream. It’s all fat. No lactose. Very dense and a higj energy content. Ising it in a meal would be very satiating. Using heavy cream in the carnivore/keto diet would be a great source of animal fat which is what we want in the HFLC diet. Same with butter. Scratching head here
I think the advice is for people who want to lose weight, which is many people. For the rest of us, I agree with you that it's a great fat source.
i love greek yogurt and limit to 1/2 cup, is this ok?
I love Greek yogurt but it does have 5 grams of carbs for 2/3 cup serving (Fagi)
I recommend A2 protein grassfed heavy cream on a small limited basis.
No. It doesn't work for casein allergy.
In other videos he recommends eating butter ????
But why does skim milk help prevent and treat gout flares? I’ve seen this work for me more than a few times. Perhaps as just a medicine is fine when needed.
Nutrient dense foods- organ meats, eggs, fatty fish, meat- cheese limited
I've lost over 50lbs 4yrs ago um I cut the fat and gained back some weight so I upped my fat and Im losing again. So its ok to keep consuming high fat at maintenance? I keep my carbs 20 or less.
Yep! High fat low carb! Focus on protein and fats and see how much rooms left fir other things :)
The leaner you get the more fat you will need, according to ted naiman
HIGH fat carnivore here (2yrs now)
High Fat keto prior (5yrs)
I also lost 50lbs.......and never returned
HIGH fat......is great if no low carbs and sugars
Body.....goes Fat Adaptive
Energy......ONLY comes from bodies fat, calories you eat!!
Last night/evening after ?? 18hrs of nothing (black coffee) ......i finished day before meal of
Eggs over easy, rib eye and beacon
I reheated added 3 more eggs topped with sour cream and cheddar cheese
I lost 50 lbs in 5 months. High fat, cheese, cream, butter, 20 carbs or less, intermittent fasting, OMAD. No cravings, no more joint pain, no gas, more energy, better sleep. Basically, feel 20 years younger at 66.
my wife doesnt like meat,…shes forcing herself slowly to eat some, she cut sugars and carbs and dairy messes up her stomach…she doesnt want to lose weight, just eat healthier, any suggestions of food to keep her weight?THANKS
Milk protein allergy is common.
I do the macros math and find it impossible to get enough fat (>70%) to be Ketogenic. Even Ribeye is only 60% fat. I add butter for the fat macros. Is this wrong?
Could dairy be causing my dermatitis?
👌 ~ Very educational information. We must be careful of our diet to fit our indivdual needs . 💪
Thank you ♥️
I eat dairy but get tired of it and end up not eating for a long time.
I'm confused. It's suppose to be "high fat" and yet the fat has to be limited.???
Yes, high fat meaning it comes from your body fat. That’s where people get it wrong, they think it means Nutritional Fat.
OMG... I also thought we had to consume a lot of FAT!😳 some doctors say to eat a lot of fat instead of carbs because insulin is pulled from fat or something like that. 🤔
i dont get it, how can butter and oils reduce the fat storage burning activation? is he aiming at a hormonal switch or just calory overdose?
I love full cream.
Strange he does not differentiate between cow's milk & goat/sheep's milk. It's very important!
Goat's milk has the same effect on me as cows
What about raw goat milk
Is that a Capetonian outjie with a Kaapse accent?
Hello, So, I am trying to lose weight with Keto and thought that eating until your full sounded great. Then, there is too much fat? So what is the limit on fat? I am on a facebook group for Keto and they mention using an app to work out macros and the fat limit is highest, over 100 grams of fat. So now I am to limit those? Also, what are the foods with fats already in them? I am thinking bacon, but bacon can have a lot of fat.
I'm confused I thought if you drop your carbs you lose weight no wonderi gained weight you start burning the fat you eat I thinks its calories now which is the problem
My weight loss comes to a halt when I don’t get enough animal (or healthy) fat.
Most pro keto doctors, even Dr Phinney says to eat about 70% fat.
Sugar free Greek yogurt makes me sleepy if I eat this at lunch time!😢
2024~ so such things as real butter or .33% cream are out of the question until you reach your optimum weight? I use these in a bar I make along with sesemie seeds and bee pollen. comments welcome?
I lost 90 pounds consuming fats, without limitation other than opetite and time restrictions.
Keto is still a calorie restriction diet if you are trying to lose weight and be healthy.
So you're saying we should be Keto AND Paleo. Far out. I can't tell you how disheartening it is. No sugar, sure. No bread, damn-it, but okay. No corn or peas, cutting it fine, but if I must. But NO CREAM OR CHEESE - Yeah, no.
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
Too right. Low carb AND low fat is an old fashioned crash diet. I think maybe he's speaking to the people who eat huge amounts of those things because there's no way low carb hunger can be satisfied without a reasonable amount of fats and oils, including cheese and dairy fats. And I'm not going without the calcium needed for bone health.
It isn't low carb AND low fat. There are many other keto-approved fats, eg animal fat, eggs, avocado, coconut, and olives.
@@veniqe Sure but dairy free is a Paleo thing. I wouldn't even do Paleo with the allowable fruit, if I can't have cream and cheese ... and cream cheese! They make keto bearable, ol.
Seems obvious Milk ratio is ideal for humans as it is the only source of food for the first 3 years of life during your greatest physical development. The ratio fat/proteins/carb just happens to be Keto
