Extremely interesting Dr Westman. Also remember that creatine based estimation of GFR is prone to false low values in people following a high protein or lots of muscle exercises. eGFR is also unprices above values of 50. So a doctor saying you have stage 2 kidney disease because creatine based eGFR went down from say 110 to 89 is just malpractise.
This reminds me of the Cholesterol hypothesis and heart disease. I told my cardiologist that I doubted the relationship of cholesterol and the arterial environment where damage occurs. They have hypotheses but I see nothing definitive. So is it fat? Is it cholesterol? Is it inflammation? No one seem to know.
Yep, cholesterol, lipoproteins and saturated fat travel all throughout the body so if they were causal we should expect to see atherosclerosis all throughout the body but we don’t. We only see it in the arteries in predictable locations like bends and bifurcations. What’s common to all these locations is increased pressure and turbulence in the blood flow.
Last year, in an attempt to slow down my aunt's kidney disease/issues from progressing (they were not diabetes/weight related) her nephrologist put her on a diet that amounted to being a whole foods (as much as possible), lower potassium, low carb diet. Meat that wasn't processed was NOT limited at all. I think it did help a little. I just wish they would've implemented that sooner and maybe she would still be here. (Like I said, her kidney issues were from anti-rejection meds, etc from her lung transplant and sarcoidosis. I wonder often if she'd started a really healthy, ketogenic diet a couple decades ago when she was diagnosed with the sarcoid, if maybe it would've helped? Who knows?)

I don't do carnivore or low carb, but I have friends who are doing very well on these diets. Carnivore has to be healthier than morbid obesity, and one friend on carnivore started with morbid obesity. But I don't eat refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, white flour, vegetable/seed oils, or ultra processed stuff. I eat meats, whole vegetables and fruits, eggs, nuts, and beans instead. Healthy blood test readings.
That sounds like a great diet. Some ppl need to be more strict, others not so much. It's all about finding what works. If I can get to the point that I can have some beans/legumes regularly I'll be thrilled as I love stuff like that. Do you eat grains? If those are cut out too, then you're diet is really nice, in my opinion of course!
I asked my doctor a question and the ARNP responded, to my disappointment. This is what she said, which psst me off. Single minded twit! Lol She said, “I would also be careful with eating a carnivore exclusive diet. We can only get so much nutrition through meat and we can become deficient in other nutrients if we aren't eating a more well balanced diet. Would also be careful as things like butter, bacon have a lot of calories/"bad" fat in them without much nutritional benefit other than protein. I have also had patients get acute kidney/liver injuries because of an exclusively carnivore diet. I understand the need/want to loose weight. I believe you have been doing keto in the past? If you are wanting to be strict on your diet with more of a keto focus, I would aim for plenty of veggies and leaner meats such as chicken, turkey, fish. Eggs are great too, just in moderation (2-3/day, if you want more protein you can add egg whites). And for fat, would do more plant based fats such as nuts/seeds, avocado, plant based oils, etc.” Im ignoring her, I did carnivore for almost 2 years and was great. Then I started full time college and shortly after this my thyroid freaked out and I had to have it killed off. Been struggling since then. Finally did keto and now carnivore. My doctor knows it and didn’t say anything negative about it.
I highly doubt the claim about those ppl with 'acute kidney/liver' "injuries" due to an all-meat diet lol. Most of the uninformed, mainstream do NOT eat a carnivore diet lol.

10:45 man: “Does carnivore diet meet the nutrient needs of folks with chronic diseases?” Woman: “No.” So what nutrients does carnivore diet lack? Hmm, must be carbs, because we need glucose from foods, or fiber, because fiber is an essential nutrient.😅😅😅😏😏😏😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
It may not cure. Cancer cells have 20x the glucose receptors than a normal cell. If you cut out carbs and sugar you will slowly starve the cancer cells. It CAN help your symptoms even shrink, some have reported to go into remission. Our cells can use fat so normal cells are not affected. You have to make sure you’re eating enough fat. The foods you mentioned, like pizza, beer, and pasta, can certainly lead to weight gain, especially if consumed regularly. Shifting back to a low-carb or even ketogenic approach may help you regain control of your weight and metabolic health. Stay focused, and keep making small, sustainable changes. You've got this!
@@AdaptYourLife I really appreciate your encouragement, and suggestions.
You know it's a good video when Julien appears. It's like when mainstream media tells me something is bad or I should be offended then I know it's probably the opposite.
I don't eat bread or pasta, no cereals, no sugars but I have to have my mashed potatoes.
9yrs I've been healing my gut issues. I started with the FODMAP diet after a Barrett's Esophagus diagnosis, to about 70% vegies with eggs as my main protein, now to carnivore/histamine for 2months.
I'm feeling a lot better but there is an adrenal/kidney issue being diagnosed now. Seems that has actually been at the core of all my digestive disorders over the years.
I should have known about the diet 10 years ago before my partner died from kidney cancer, I think it would have helped her a great deal... I'm really p***ed off with all these fake doctors. Honestly, I bought books which told me to give her stupid foods that I now know are cancer feeding...She took one and a half years to die horribly. I'm am really annoyed with these doctors with their own, personal opinions.
You are not alone in that. There are many of us out here who feel they hurt their loved one because of absolutely ridiculous dietary advice from negligent quacks, which most Dr's nowadays are!
Sorry for your loss. What ifs always cut deep

Extremely interesting Dr Westman. I worked in the early 90's for a year on a renal unit and "taught" as a swkr pre-dialysis patients through written materials through standard practice guidelines from the kidney foundation and the nephrologists. I recall red meat was discouraged and wish I had a copy to see in detail re carbs too what was advised. After listening to your educational info. think much may have fallen short as a tool that you might see today in your practice.
My husband has Type 1 diabetes since he was 38yrs. And is now 77yrs . He had a little of Proteinuria and Dr. put him on Lasinoprel 5mg a day, which is helping. He is not at all overweight. So he has just recently started drinking more water throughout the day. That change has helped him immensely. He is slightly anemic, takes liquid iron, eats greens moderately. But he is tired a lot.
He has had triple bypass, stents in legs, some toe and partial foot amputation. Also vein
Even if I'm not carnivore but simply meat based, my creatinine wasn't that high. Maybe higher than normal but only slightly. And it even improved. It was being monitored by my doctor because he was concerned that my kidney will get affected by the medication.
I observed that water was liquid at 35F and 210F. I extrapolated that it would also be liquid at 28F and 215F.
🤣
Thank you!
@drericwestman Question: my 64 year old wife only has 1 kidney (her other is atrophied) and is diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. Her EGFR runs about 48. Would/Could she benefit from a keto/carnivore diet?
Both of these doctors should have a chat with Dr. Anthony Chaffee as well as yourself.

Anyone here have Type 2 Diabetes, Stage 4/5 CKD (15-20 GFR), metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, etc that switched to carnivore or keto and saw an improvement in your GFR?
Yes……bro in law gfr 21………….did keto and climbed out of metabolic disease / diabetes gfr rose to 33
@@catswishes6848 about how long did that take?
@@kyleduffy 6 months
@@catswishes6848 How did the medications change over those 6 months? My father did keto for 6 months and went from 18 to 21 GFR. Not much of a jump. But, he also didn't stop medications except for Insulin.
@@kyleduffyhow did he do the diet? What was he eating? Most stay on meds UNTIL the numbers drop/rise.
I've been doing carnivore for 19 days 😊 not easy but i keep doing it. Though sometimes i just want to eat all the fruits in the supermarket and forget about carnivore 😂
You are allowed to eat 1 grape 🍇 a day and maintain your carnivore status. 😳
Fructose, glucose, galactose are all extremely addictive; akin to cocaine, meth and opiates.
Does he say how long we have left?
I remember my dad telling me how he had low cholesterol…..two months before he died of heart attack.
I am stage 2 CKD on border of CKD stage 3 but with proteinuria. Very afraid to eat more protein.
I wouldn't be surprised that too low fat with too much protein would lead to issues, no balance there.
In the beginning of his talk he stated there was hardly any research and what was available was on animals.
I now see that I could have had the same dramatic improvement in my health by simply finding out what the vegoons say and do the exact opposite.
Who knows?)
Great video, as usual. What about those with Nephrocalcinosis? Do you feel the is n is a condition that should merit some caution with the carnivore diet?
My Dr actually scheduled me an appointment because she is worried I will get kidney damage because of the carnivore diet.
How did your stats go?
I have kidney issues that are definitely better than it was. Now I’ve been figuring out a diet. When I eat heavy vegetables and a low amount of meat, my urine comes out foamy. When I eat only protein, I have no foamy urine at all.
Im about to try this Lion Diet, i had my colon removed in 2011 and feel like a slug every day and everything just feeling like effort and always dehydrated.
G'day all. Does anyone know if Rooibos tea is safe for men to drink on Carnivore? I consume Ruminant meats, Eggs, and Brie cheese.
Carnivor is number 1 ketogenic 2 life changing way of eating, we have polysistic kidneys in our family, doing great so far well see in a year ,not afaid to try those changes im doing great on carnivor carnivor, now im husband whos on dialysis is doing it,well see what will be ,so far so good ,just cutting out carbs along makes us feel better
Hows he handling the diet?
2 months in carnovore. My doctor my urine have protein in it. Im worrying my kidney have some problem. Should I keep doing carnivore. I only eat beef, egg, bacon, pork belly.
Yes or No?
What about it causing kidney stones and elevated uric acid levels
Is it safe for someone at stage 4 CKD and high proteinuria
I would like to know this too…
I will answer this in one word. No
So you have to wonder what the motivation is, I think I know. After trying the conventional way to help my type2 to no effect but more meds, Keto Cooking corrected my problem to less meds!! Go figure!!

It would be useful to have links in description to the papers and studies you cite
Lol
She said, “I would also be careful with eating a carnivore exclusive diet.
And for fat, would do more plant based fats such as nuts/seeds, avocado, plant based oils, etc.”
Im ignoring her, I did carnivore for almost 2 years and was great.
Isnt this one getting old? Hasnt it been debunked ad infinitum?? It's a measure of the desperation and disinformation lengths they're willing to go to, that they're still throwing this around 🤷♀️
The best thing for gut microbiome is fasting not fibre. For me fibre bloats me excessively and hurts my belly. Carnivore fixes all my gut problems with a 12-16 hour daily fast
i threw away all the rice in my house, and the sugar too, but I went out and got a ice coffee with sugar from Dunkin - man I need to buckle down and stop the shugs
Dear Dr Westman, maybe you've seen something like this in your experience: When I ate carbs, I had my ALT (GPT) liver enzyme 16. Now I eat meat and a lot of eggs, I got ALT (GPT) 40.😮 It seems like i eat too many eggs. I can't see any other explanation. My triglycerides are 51, glucose 75, insulin 2.6. cholesterols are ok. Only ALT went crazy. Maybe you have seen such cases before?
You cannot eat too many eggs. Eggs are one of tge most superior foods on this planet. An egg is the healthiest thing you can eat.
@@louisacapell,
Cool Hand Luke said that fifty eggs (in an hour) was "too many eggs" after he'd done it.

Last two times in my blood work my kidneys were fine. This second one were after 16 months on keto/carnivore. I eat mostly carnivore but i still like some veggies time to time.
Disclaimers are not evidence, they are just a legal requirement that does not necessarily have a scientific basis.
10:45 man: “Does carnivore diet meet the nutrient needs of folks with chronic diseases?”
Woman: “No.”
So what nutrients does carnivore diet lack? Hmm, must be carbs, because we need glucose from foods, or fiber, because fiber is an essential nutrient.😅😅😅😏😏😏😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Uhhhh really because BOTH times I did strick carnivore & both times IMMEDIATELY ahoy kidney stones

Laughing at the title and nope. If anything, it healed mine!
what about if u have kidney cancer?
It will cure cancer, do it with fasting
It may not cure. Cancer cells have 20x the glucose receptors than a normal cell. If you cut out carbs and sugar you will slowly starve the cancer cells. It CAN help your symptoms even shrink, some have reported to go into remission.
Our cells can use fat so normal cells are not affected. You have to make sure you’re eating enough fat. (Opinion/anecdotal)
It doesn't.
I think it is irresponsible not to mention the biggest cause of kidney disease, sugar, when discussing the topic.
Does anyone have there eGFR above 90, on this diet or is everyone under some stage of chronic kidney disease?
My GFR WENT FROM 85 to 99 on Keto/carnivore…😊
i was kidding about the gastric bypass and dressing up like a panda or something like that. It was just being ridiculous at that moment. I dont really know what to believe anymore. But I would prefer to eat meat over vegetables, and junk foods over just meat. Junk food with meat, but I know I gotta stop the junks
And what about oxolate dumping when you start the diet?
This only happens to a few people occasionally. Not saying it's not a real thing just that it is not as ubiquitous as some channels make it out to be.
Change your diet slowly over a few weeks to minimize potential side effects. If you do experience oxalate dumping then you can reintroduce some low oxalate foods temporarily or else consume dairy and citric acid.
@@leemanwrong Yes, this is how to deal with the condition. I just don't think it is as big of deal as some have made it out to be. Someone gets a rash and they assume it is oxalate dumping when it could be a thousand other things, some completely non food related like sensitivities to soaps and such. Oxalate dumping sort of became the malady du jour for a while there and I think it got over hyped and over generalized.
I was mostly keto off and on for years before going full carnivore. I had 'sleep crystals' in my eyes in the mornings for a couple of weeks and still do once in a while. Mostly carnivore for 12 weeks now. Also, about the same time, I developed what I thought was a UTI. Drank lots of water to flush my system and it went away. Came back a couple more times in the first 6 weeks but was able to avoid a Dr visit. A real Uti probably wouldn't go away so easily without medication. No more issues for the last 6 or 7 weeks. I'm blaming oxalates... even though there isn't any way to be sure.
@@Mudcreekma I used to get UTIs all the time before carnivore and now I never get them. Nice side benefit.
The crunchy stuff in your eyes could be oxalates and can be caused by stuff in the air too. We've had a bunch of wildfires here in California and my eyes have been a mess.
I thought babies have a higher acid in their bodies than an adult. Thats why 6 months onwards could eat meat, eggs. Just blend it.
👍
The study needed is the people who Go carnavore and a few months is start tô have kdiny Pains....maybe the kidney was already damage,
There is so much BS to listen to from MDs and other self declared experts when it comes to diets! I always wonder where they get it all from!
I have been carnivore my entire life. Never eaten vegetables. I have pre diabetes take 2 1000mg metformin daily and lots of protein in my urine. Usually an inch of foam foam in urine. 64 years old. I wish I could find a doctor who can help. Only drink water and coffee. Low carbs and add zero sugar to food. No doctor has ever asked me what my diet is.
Have you considered lowering your protein intake and increasing fat rather?
