Jackie is one of the great genius performers of film history. He is an idol of martial arts film in the same way that Chaplin is known for comedy, or Walt Disney for animation. Man is a legend
I hate chaplin, but love harold lloyd. The best were laurel and hardy though.
He is also a corrupt politician who is agaisnt human rights and pro facism. He is the opposite person in real life than what he does in the movies. He is hated in asia for all his sexual and corruption scandals, also for making propaganda pro Xi Jingpin and for trying to make China take over Taiwan and Hong Kong
@@losgatosdewilson sauce
He's been my favorite action hero since I was a kid in the early 80s. I absolutely love his movies
@@losgatosdewilson Absolutely.
The fight scene between Jackie Chan and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez in Wheels on Meals (1982) is honestly incredible, especially when you realize that the footage isn't sped up at all.
It is sped up (a little).
They did another good fight in Dragons Forever
I started out not being able to get enough of the Angry Video game nerd freaking out over bad games, now I can't get enough of James & the gang calmly talking about movies lol.
Shows a lot about how weve kind of all grown together through the years. 😂
Chilling AF

Same. These reviews have become my favorite content outside of the AVGN vids
Well tony gets a little rowdy sometimes lol
Jackie Chan month, year, decade, whatever. We need more reviews of his work
Agreed.
@@trekadam30 as some other people said... Chan-uary
John Wick avenges his dog. Jackie Chan avenges his pants.
I dont have a dog but I do have many pants so I identify more with Drunken Master than John Wick
LOL
And tony jaa avenges his elephants.
Anita Mui was almost a decade younger than Jackie Chan when she played his mother in this movie :D
How old was he? He looked so young here
He was around 40 when he starred in Drunken Master II (1994)
RIP Anita Mui

My mistake - thanks :)
Talking about how Jackie’s been burned, electrocuted, stabbed etc. I expected to hear more such as drawn & quartered, hanged, poisoned like Vigo in Ghostbusters 2 lol

My parents are from Asia and we watched Drunken Master together and my mom would always use the movie to give us life lessons. "Wong Fei Hung wouldn't grow up and lost his dignity. This is why you have to listen to your parents." It's crazy to see Cinemassacre talk about it. 😂
@rvd356 We're not Chinese. My family is an ethnic minority with ties to China and I'd rather not say what my heritage is beyond general east Asia. I always feel more comfortable keeping it there. Don't like to feel like I am giving a history lesson when I talk about my heritage.
This so stereotipically asian! I bet also that your mom was a kung-fu master / ninja

The "My Stunts" documentary is in the Criterion Collection set of Police Story 1 & 2.
Its also on UA-cam.
That Criterion case is a thing of beauty isn’t it
Fun fact: hwang jang lee, the man who portrayed thunderlegs, is a 9th dan in teakwondo and actually killed a man with one single kick in the S.Korean war.
People always talk about if martial artists are legit in films or if they could win a fight in real life but I think Hwang, of all people, shouldn't be questioned in legitimacy.
15:55 I wonder if they know about Jackie Chan's influence on the Tekken character Lei Wulong
I always assumed he was the inspiration for Shun Di in Virtua Fighter as well.
@@AvatarOfGames they have some of the same movesets but I think the old uncle was the inspiration
Could be wrong tho
It is hard to say for sure. Despite how iconic Jackie is in his portrail of Wong Fei Hung, those surronding him and the 5 style Northern Shaolin Martial arts and Drunken Kung Fu etc. are filled with similar (to a western audience) seeming characters and archetypes. So it could be any of these or none.
Donnie Yen, Sonny Chibba, Chow Yun Phat and Jet Li have all played similar characters. So maybe just a blending of all of them?
Lei Wulong from Tekken is almost literally Jackie Chan's Drunken Master protag.
Legend of Drunken Master is my favorite Jackie Chan film. That final fight against the kickboxer was insane.
Ken Lo. You can find lots of video of him on UA-cam. He's great.
Yep! Mine too.
Just wanted to point out that most of Europe already knew about Jackie Chan many years before Rumble in The Bronx. I'm from the UK and had already seen around 10 of his films by the time Rumble in The Bronx was released.
Chan appeared in the Cannonball Run films.
So your experience is somehow the whole of Europe? Come on now.
I was watching on rented videos in the 80's and can confirm this as fact.
Nearly every Jackie Chan movie I've ever watched, when it's over, I'm like... "what the F was that about again?" Every time! I can't recall what the hell all the fighting was about!
Fun fact: both Drunken Master 2 and Fist of Legend came out in 1994, leading to their nominations for Best Action Choreography in the 1995 Hong Kong Film Awards. Thus, Jackie Chan was up against Yuen Woo-ping, the director of the original Drunken Master. The former ended up winning, but the latter ended up being discovered by the Wachowskis for The Matrix.
That's crazy. I never knew that. I personally think Fist of Legend is better.
Except drunken master 2 was directed by Yuen-woo ping & came out in 1979 :/
Fun fact: The Matrix was stolen work
@@Jazzadrin Dark City🤘
@@Jazzadrin not necessarily stolen just heavily inspired without any accreditation to what inspired it. Similarly to a Space based epic, that has become an intergalactic phenomenon.
Who Am I? is my most watched Jackie Chan film. Classic.
The final half hour of that one is highly entertaining!
Who am I is a great flick!
I loved the rooftop fight.
Who Am I? is The Bourne Identity...except better.
@@mrsticky005 True! I still enjoy the Bourne movies tho
Oh man that Twin Peaks music at the beginning got me feeling nostalgic
"There's a fish in the percolator!"
Hong Kong radio deejays SoftHard used that same music on a segment where they make prankcalls. They were also featured in the Jackie Chan movie "City Hunter".
The Forbidden Kingdom was a great Jackie Chan movie solely because of the fight scene between Jackie's character and Jet Li's guy.
That film was wild. But also a dream fulfilled for everyone
@@peoples2296 the lead characters journey to grow, from being knocked down, to gaining confidence awarded from his journey

Jack Chan VS Jet Li ?
wow that is so cool it's like Chuck Norris VS Bruce Lee !
Kung fu hustle has the axe gang in it. Hopefully they’ll be reviewing it.
Steven chow is criminally underrated. But I believe they are, along with Kung-pow.
Looks like they are, and are comparing it to Kung Pow.
@@gnarlybarktree5270 Steven Chow is a master, his style is so unique. There are people who imitate him, but they always feel off.
I believe they are after bloodsport this coming friday. That is a very interesting film.
kung Pow is very interesting as well. They both are funny.
the fight scene on the roof from jackie chan's "who am I" was phenominal.
Wong Fei-hong was portrayed rather more seriously by Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China series. Also good movies
Lau Kare-leung, who directed Drunken Master II also directed two really good Wong Fei-hung movies, Challenge of the Masters and The Martial Club.
4:07 Jackie Chan is big in Europe years before Bronks movie, Drunken Master, Fearless Hyena, My Lucky Stars with Samo Hung is verry popular durin the 80"s :)
Also later on the Armour of God movies (1 & 2) were really popular in Europe too.
My lucky stars is one of my absolute favourites.
Wasn't Jackie Chan mentioned in Reservoir Dogs and Speed?

Definitely mentioned by Sandra Bullock's character in Demolition Man.
Stallone had actually offered Chan the part of the bad guy, to which he declined as he didn't to play bad guys in general.

I don't think most anime fans gravitate towards Snyder.

I referred to the mashups. For example, look up the video titled "Avengers infinity war Titan battle (Naruto style)" uploaded by Nega jubito. People do them because they recognize the parallels between the film and anime action.

I've always been a casual fan of Jackie Chan. But when Mr. Rolfe made a couple different top 10 Jackie Chan videos back in the day, that really skyrocketed my appreciation for him. I love that he's covering these movies again now.
I love that James genuinely seems like a fan of the Kung Fu movie genre as a whole, and has a far more complete knowledge of these films that than other two.
Jackie Chan was trained in a theatrical style of Martial arts, so it was meant for stage performances, which is why a lot of his earlier work has those beats almost like a dance to them. The rhythmic trading of blows back and forth is very characteristic of that style, also explains why Jackie is "randomly" into other actors and stuntmen, his formative years were theatrical in nature.

I liked Police Story 2 more. I recently was zapping at 3am and stumbled across it and it gave me a total flashback. I still knew all dialogues and remembered I have recorded that on VHS and rewatched it like a hundered times as a teen.
Another underappreciated Jackie Chan movie is Project A. It hat a great production quality, superb comedy and crisp fights.
Ok, legit, the ending cut for return of the king got me. A third of that movie is just ending!
Those quick endings were hilarious! xD
thats how the Tolkien books were, Fellowship was the Beginning, Two Towers was the middle and Return of the King was the end, it was an end to the saga, the end to the trilogy, the end of the greatest war in their world, and the end of the story, so it served its purpose.
You must review the 5 venom films including: "The Crippled Avengers", "Ninja's Deadly Trap", "5 Element Ninja", "Kid with the Golden Arm" and of course "The 5 Venoms" itself.
I saw Drunken Master 2 as a kid so much man, the ending fight scene is the best in fight movie history
Drunken master 1 is one of my favorite Jackye movie. A masterpiece of martial arts movies for it's time.

Donnie Yen played Begger So in "Hero Among Heroes" (1993) directed by Yuen Woo Ping.
So did Stephen Chow (King of Beggars) and Vincent Zhao (True Legend)!
classic Jackie Chan stuff!
I only need two Jackie Chan pictures in my collection, and those are Police Story (1985) and Police Story 2 (1988).
The Drunken Style of fighting certainly shows up in the original Dragonball! Master Roshi uses it during a tournament fight with Goku

The Prisoner is one of Jackie Chan's most underrated and brutal films
Great video, guys. There is no denying Jackie Chan's talent and passion for entertaining audiences all over the world. I remember seeing "The Legend Of Drunken Master" when it had its theatrical release in 2000. It was such a spectacle to watch and I had no idea it was a re-release of Drunken Master 2 from 1984.
That editing with how movies would end is hilarious!!! Hahaha
I wonder if Kung-Pow Enter the Fist would be considered a martial arts movie xD
I would do the same to that goldberg figure Tony, poor Bray
I have watched Drunken master 2 so many times.
It's a classic
I'm a huge jackie chan fan, and you guys definitely know your facts! Glad to know others out there know about the legend of jackie thanks for sharing!!!
I was watching one of these movies on netflix and it kept swapping between the sub and the dub and it's hilarious
Sadly it's the only way it was released worldwide. Hopefully someday a remaster might fix that issue.
I think there is one fight scene better than the one at the end of Legend Of Dragon Master. The fight scene from Protector/Tom Yun Goong that was done in one continuous take as Tony Jaa progresses up the spiral staircase.
That is a great scene, but a lot of what happens is either out of view, or a simple toss off the side
Tony Jaa did a better scene in Ong Bak 2 at the end. Fun fact, he actually envisioned that entire movie as a Jackie Chan film.
"Oldboy" hallway fight.
The final match in The Raid is up there too, but DM2 and its triple finale is still my favorite.
