When Sonnie gets out, he needs to stay as far away as possible from his father or anyone else that uses-- no meetings, no calls. It's far too common for people to break their sobriety when hanging out with "the old gang". And they don't want you around if you're *not* using.
When Sonnie said his biggest regret was getting in to drugs in the first place and his biggest fear was losing his children, I knew there was hope for him having a bright future.

As someone from kentucky thats done decades in prison and jail, was a career criminal for most of my life still struggling with drug addictions. But since coming home almost 3 years ago now and have had steady employment, began rebuilding relationships and creating a future and good life for myself finally. I know its possible, and worth it. He got this, a long road still ahead of him but judging from how he carries himself, he no doubt can turn this shit around and come out winning. Thanks for sharing this Mark.

They all tell these same stories. I was involved in the state prison system as a volunteer. It's a skill they hone to perfection in order to gain sympathy and as such some kind of support. It's very easy to believe what they say and then be pulled into helping them which most often means putting money on their books, or if you were to visit them, to become a mule bringing things in for them. They may ask a person to do things for their families. They will hook you and bring you in somewhere.

My drug addiction was caused by a crippling disorder I have called cervical dystonia. I never bought from the streets. I understand brother. When I hit bottom my wife said “ I know you’re in pain but you either get help or I’m taking the kids and we’re gone”. That’s all I needed to hear. Almost 8 years and it’s good.

I noticed that in general most inmates and ex-conficts have a strong control of not showing 'weak' feelings like tenderness and sadness. So to me it's beautiful when Sonnie lets his guard down a little for a few short moments (around 11:27) when he says that his daughters inspire him. Great interview!

The war on poor people. Keep them addicted, hand them rations (ebt, welfare) every month and convince them racism is their biggest problem. The only difference between the projects and the trailer park is the location. Theyve turned the working class against the poor class by telling them the poors are robbing them of their money abusing the system. The audacity of them to "scam" the system out of a few hundred dollars! They make it sound like the people earning the money, paying into the system would be benefiting from their tax dollars if those pesky poor people didnt keep stealing it. Meanwhile, theyre lining their own pockets and sending trillions of dollars to their buddies in other countries. Thats NINE zeros. $1,000,000,000. That $1,000 your neighbor "stole" from the government is basically nothing. It doesnt even come close to the change you dug out of your seats to get a few $$ in gas to get to work the rest of the week. They created the crack epidemic. They were in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. How people dont see this is beyond me.

I don't live all that far away from him and used to mingle with those like him, yet I stayed clean and out of trouble. Which direction you go in life is simply the byproduct of choices made. I went to rehab a year ago for the first time here in Western Kentucky and the amount of people exactly like him I met is astounding. Life experiences down to their mannerisms. These addicts who weren't dealt the best cards in life are typically amazing people who will give you the shirt off their back. Sadly many of these acquaintances relapsed and back to their old ways. I have had lapses myself I must admit. Praying for all these suffering individuals and I am happy that for a moment I saw a side of them and they saw a side of me not many people see.

I went to the dentist in 2004 to have a tooth pulled and he gave me 90 …. 90!!! Vicodin.. that started a spiral that too me a bit to get out of. They were so reckless with the scripts.

The war on poor people. Keep them addicted, hand them rations (ebt, welfare) every month and convince them racism is their biggest problem. The only difference between the projects and the trailer park is the location. Theyve turned the working class against the poor class by telling them the poors are robbing them of their money abusing the system. The audacity of them to "scam" the system out of a few hundred dollars! They make it sound like the people earning the money, paying into the system would be benefiting from their tax dollars if those pesky poor people didnt keep stealing it. Meanwhile, theyre lining their own pockets and sending trillions of dollars to their buddies in other countries. Thats NINE zeros. $1,000,000,000. That $1,000 your neighbor "stole" from the government is basically nothing. It doesnt even come close to the change you dug out of your seats to get a few $$ in gas to get to work the rest of the week. They created the crack epidemic. They were in bed with the pharmaceutical companies. How people dont see this is beyond me.

People might dismiss someone with a heavy Southern accent as being ignorant, or hillbilly, but this gentleman is quite intelligent. I don't live all that far away from him and used to mingle with those like him, yet I stayed clean and out of trouble. Which direction you go in life is simply the byproduct of choices made. As they say, it's a matter of "one turn off the trail." Hang tough, Sonnie.

Some people have character issues. Some people have not been taught how to live honestly, decently, and with structur and discipline.. If breaking the law is all you have ever known, how to change in your 40s? Nature or nurture.
My son is an addict and he’s very intelligent.
That's because they believe Hollywood's stereotypes about the south.
Your doing a great job being clean and sober for two years keep up the good work for you and your daughters.

Central FL is pretty bad Swamps of the Deep South. Yea nothing to do to cure boredom or treat trauma other than to self medicate. It's always been glorified too in pop culture and I grew up lying to myself. Glad I'm back in action. Long slump.

I went to rehab a year ago for the first time here in Western Kentucky and the amount of people exactly like him I met is astounding. Life experiences down to their mannerisms. These addicts who weren't dealt the best cards in life are typically amazing people who will give you the shirt off their back. Sadly many of these acquaintances relapsed and back to their old ways. I have had lapses myself I must admit. Praying for all these suffering individuals and I am happy that for a moment I saw a side of them and they saw a side of me not many people see.

No it’s never too late and I’m so proud of his strength in even doing this.
Especially with his daughter being a correctional officer I’m sure she sees people end up in bad situations so I’m sure she’ll protect him from it.
Watching these two videos of the inmates back to back was striking - one in absolute denial and one who accepts the blame and acknowledges responsibility.
God bless you Sonnie. Don’t be afraid of failure. Be afraid of giving up. We are all bound to fail in some way but we’ve got keep trying. Your determination to never give up will be what your kids and grandkids admire. God never asks us for success, only faith.
Doctors prescribing vicoden like candy years back and riding off into the sunset without a care caused some big problems for people.
I went to the dentist in 2004 to have a tooth pulled and he gave me 90 …. 90!!! Vicodin.. that started a spiral that too me a bit to get out of. They were so reckless with the scripts.
Yup. I’m one of them. 1996 used to get 3-4 refills of 85 pills of 750 Vicodin. And that was it. The worst road ever !

Thank you for your story Sonnie, I pray you get the chance to make the changes you want and your daughters deserve! My brother is also incarcerated because of drugs and I will show him this story. Our family loves him and only wants him to change for his own daughter and for himself. Again, I know you can succeed and live a great life as long as you dont use! I see beauty in Sonnies eyes & soul…he’s been surrounded by dysfunction & never had a chance. A child that was never protected. His daughters are his focus, purpose & lifesource. I hope 🙏🏻he can stay away from drugs & see the better side of living w/o them. He has lots of life left to get to experience the joy of it & maybe even help bring others who need help into the light. I'm sober myself and I know how hard it can be to open up about one's own struggles and failure. As of this comment, there are 8,300+ people who have now heard Sonnie embrace his vulnerability and share his story. I don't think anyone would call that failure. I'd say Sonnie is already succeeding.
