'ഖബർ' എന്ന നോവൽ വായിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് ഇരിക്കപ്പൊറുതിയില്ലാതെയായി. എഴുത്തുകാരിയെ കണ്ടേ തീരൂ എന്ന തോന്നൽ മനസ്സിൽ നിരന്തരം രൂപപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പുറത്തിറങ്ങി ആറുമാസത്തിനുള്ളിൽ 20000 കോപ്പികളും കടന്ന് 'ഖബർ' വായനക്കാരെ വിസ്മിയിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത് വായനക്കാരുടെ പ്രതിനിധിയായി ചില ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിൽ രൂപപ്പെടുത്തി.
അങ്ങനെ ഫോണിലൂടെ അപ്പോയ്മെന്റ് എടുത്ത് കോട്ടയത്തെ അവരുടെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് ഒരു യാത്ര. പുസ്തകപ്രകാശനത്തിന്റെയും ഇനിയും പൂർത്തിയാകാത്ത രചനകളുടെയും തിരക്കുകളിലായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും എഴുത്തുകാരി സമയവും നല്ല ചായയും അനുവദിച്ചു തന്നു. എന്റെ ചോദ്യങ്ങളുടെ കഴുത്തിലൊന്നും കുരുക്കിടാതെ സൗമ്യമധുരമായി ദീർഘനേരം സംസാരിച്ചു.
'ഖബറിൽ' നിന്ന് 'ഘാതകനി'ലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു യാത്രയുടെ അവസാന ലാപ്പിലാണ് ഈ ഇന്റർവ്യൂ സംഭവിക്കുന്നത്. 'ഖബർ' വായിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളവർക്കും 'ഘാതകൻ 'വായിക്കാൻ പോകുന്നവർക്കുമായി ഈ എപ്പിസോഡ് ഇവിടെ സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
ഘാതകനക്കുറിച്ച് കെ ആർ മീരയോട് ചോദിച്ച് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയത് താഴെപറയുന്ന വിധമാണ്.
‘മലയാളത്തില്‍ സവിശേഷമായ ഒരു ആഖ്യാനപ്രകാരം നിര്‍മിക്കുന്ന നോവല്‍’ എന്നു പ്രശസ്ത നിരൂപകന്‍ പി.കെ. രാജശേഖരന്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ച കൃതിയാണ് ‘ഘാതകന്’
ഇരയും അപസര്‍പ്പകയും ഒരേ ആളായിത്തീരുന്ന അസാധാരണ ജീവിതാവസ്ഥയിലൂടെ ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണു ഈ നോവൽ വരച്ചിടുന്നത്.
പണം അധികാരം ആണത്തം എന്ന ഈ മൂന്ന് സത്വങ്ങൾ 70 കളിൽ ജനിച്ച ഒരു സ്ത്രീയുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ എങ്ങനെയൊക്കെയാണ് സ്വാധീനിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതാണ് 'ഘാതകനെ'ന്ന നോവൽ ത്രയത്തിലെ ആദ്യ പുസ്തകം അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നത്.

മീര എന്ന് കേട്ടപ്പോൾ അനൗചിത്യം എനിക്ക് അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ബഹുമാനത്തിന്റേയും സ്നേ ഹത്തിന്റേയും ആദരവിന്റേയും ചേർന്നുള്ള ഒരു വിശേഷണം ആവാമായിരുന്നു.... മാഡത്തിന് ....മീരമാ ഡ ത്തിന്റെ ഒരു നിശബ്ദ ആരാധിക
ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും ശ്രദ്ധേയയായ എഴുത്തുകാരി. ഘാതകൻ മൂന്നു ദിവസം മുൻപെ വായിച്ചു തീർത്തതെ ഉള്ളു. വായിക്കാൻ 4 ആ ഴ്ച എടുത്തു. മനസ്സ് മുഴുവൻ കാറും കോളും നിറഞ്ഞ കടൽ ഇരമ്പുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇതിനോട് കിട പിടിക്കുന്ന ഒരു നോവലും മലയാളത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.75 വയസ്സുള്ള ഞാൻ ഈ അനുഗ്രുഹീത കഥകാരിയുടെ ആരാധകൻ ആണ്.നേത്രോന്മീലനം വാങ്ങി കയ്യിലുണ്ട്. അടുത്ത വായന. പിന്നീട് ഖ ബർ.

Outstanding interview. My gratitude is due to both author K.R. Meera and the interviewer, Jamesh.
The generation that came of age in the early 1990s is among the most misunderstood or neglected. The Forties generation had the second world war, the 1950s the glorious years of hope against colonialism and for freedom, the Sixties the streetfighting years of protest and Woodstock and unemployment , the Seventies the searing years of Vietnam and more unemployment.
Then came our 1980s and early 1990s, the decade of disappointment, letdown and missed chances. Rajiv Gandhi and his failed Camelot; the Left turning its back on computers and modernisation of education; and worst of all, the injection of communal poison into national mainstream.
I think the full impact of what the demolition of Babri Masjid did to us is yet to be understood or gauged in its entirety. Every single traumatic and disastrous incident that ripped us apart since then can be traced to the demolition: Bombay blasts, the Bombay riots, the so-callec terrorism witchhunt, the Gujarat pogrom, the ascendance of Narendra Modi (has there ever been a bigger catastrophe post-Independence?)
Against this backdrop, K.R. Meera has described our generation in the most apt manner possible: മുറിവുകൾക്കൊപ്പം വളർന്ന തലമുറ.
When Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2012, a friend asked me if I remembered the Master’s Test debut. I went blank. Later, I realised it was November 1989. I could not afford to watch Tendulkar because, like many of my generation, we had just graduated and we’re desperately looking for a job. I was working in an evening daily, covering the Assembly in the morning and distributing the newspaper in the afternoon, capping the day at the evening college in University College and later at the Press Club. It was tough, there was no time for cricket.
K.R. Meera’s interview is elegant and lyrical. We can write long essays about almost every answer in the interview - a testimony to the brilliance of the author.
It is almost like reading a good book in an endearing ambience. Credit must also go to the interviewer who, unlike many star interviewers now, allowed the author to speak, asked questions seeking information, not to show off his knowledge, and above all, his respect for the author was apparent.
Evocative photography too. Did I miss it or was there a photograph showing the full library? If it was there, I missed it. Also, didn’t the interviewer promise photographs at the end. I could not find any in the first viewing. Or, did he mean the photographs that were interspersed in the interview itself? Then, no complaints. Excellent portrait photography.
Thank you, for the memories, not all pleasant. But most of all for chronicling the weeping wounds of our generation.
