#Suzume #matokoshinkai #supermario #GRTodaysAnimeNews - Фільми й анімація
You could kind of tell from the Suzume trailer that they wanted to draw people in with the romance aspects, but I really felt like the stronger drivers of the movie were during her "running away" journey. Specifically, where she met her new friend who was delivering oranges and the single mom (both of whom were huge helps to her), and, of course, resolving the conflict with her Aunt Tamaki and her grief over losing her mother so unexpectedly. I'm okay with the romance taking a backseat here.
Until towards the end, I didn't feel any romance between them. The plot was more of Suzume suddenly getting wrapped up in things she didn't want to, and then had to literally go all the way, meeting all sorts of nice people all the way and learn how they remember their pasts in comparison to hers (which reflects a lot of real world issues in modern Japan). It's only when she risks everything to save Sota did it seem like she liked him, but even by the end it was mostly a personal journey for her and Sota her closest companion.
Suzume looks like all spectacle but no substance to me.
I see what you did their at the end.
a sisterhood story would have been so nice its been a lonnngg time since we had a good sister relationship movie in both western and eastern movies
Well they all favor lesbian relationships now I feel over sisterhood.
I'm disturbed Looper refer to it as a Lesbian romance even though that isn't what Shinkai said at all.
@@SourRobo8364 I really don’t know what to say about this “journalism”. At that point it isn’t misinterpretation but just lies.
Your Name is one of my all time favorite movies. Weathering with you was fine. It felt a bit too forced and corporatized with very blatant sponsor placements throughout the film. But Suzume was fantastic and up there with Your Name in my opinion. I’m not surprised to learn that producers want to milk a cow until it’s dry and it ruins a directors career for being too one note. I really hope he can let his creative wings spread for his next project. He’s got the skills, now he just needs the freedom to make it.
I'm one of those weirdos who likes Weathering With You more than Your Name, but I can agree that Suzume shows how much potential there is in Shinkai's work when he lets the relationship be a subplot and take a backseat to something more interesting. Suzume is, as of now, his magnum opus, and I can't wait to see what he does next. No doubt he'll top himself yet again!
I saw Suzume in theaters, I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see what he makes next. Hope he gets to make what he really wants next.
Suzume to me, felt like it was all good graphics or animation but no substance.
I was thinking there was going to b another cameo in suzume. I was a bit disappointed when they didn’t give us a crossover from weathering with u.
Honestly I love shinkai, I love Your name, weathering with you was alright and I also love Suzume, but I hope this is his last, I hope his next movie is vastly different
Personally I hope Shinkai goes back to the sci-fi/fantasy inspirations seen in his earlier works.
VINDLAND SAGA WAS BY FAR the best show of the season.
It was probably in part because the Ice Guy ED evolves over time and incorporates new elements of the show as it goes, but the fact that all the josei fans (and all the shoujo fans, who tend to go along with them) tend to push their shows a lot these days to make up for the industry not doing it sure did help.
Is ice guy the kind of show that fits with the evolving ed trope? It's not like this is a coming of age deal, why would they put that in?
One word: fashion. It is one of the few animes were the characters actually change their clothing styles with the seasons.
I barely even noticed that there was a romance in Suzume. Honestly the movie would have been better off without the romance, it really didnt need the romance to be great. Suzume's attachment to the guy she just met didnt feel particularly plausible, it was like the only reason they included it was to give her a motivation to go out of her way to save him. But simply leaving it open ended towards the end of the movie with a hint of them possibly having a future together would have sufficed. I am glad that overall they didnt go too heavy with it because ultimately, the movie was about something far more interesting and important
I loved being able to see Suzume in theatres! Yea, the bit of romance that was there was fine but personally I appreciated that metaphor behind the three legged chair more because that in it of itself is a conversation.
Personally, I enjoyed Weathering With You more than Your Name. Looking forward to the next project.
Also anyone else disturbed how Looper and other media outlets are trying to gaslight people into thinking Suzume was almost a lesbian movie, even though that's not what Shinkai said at all?
The Mario movie US home release / streaming must include the Japanese track and the Italian track!
I don’t think people voting in ending usually think about the animation of it. For good reason too that usually goes for the opening. A lot of endings now don’t do too much with the ending besides putting a chill song over some static art. Also I low key think the op and ed of last season were very weak except for Vinland so it didn’t have a lot of competition imo
There's nothing wrong with old fashioned romance. I'd like him to make a romance with older male and female protagonists... maybe well into their 20s or 30s, with a more mature theme. He's done a lot with younger protagonists... so more mature ones will be good. I saw Suzume in theaters and like others here I enjoyed it.
Damn, you dropped "The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten"? Really missed out, was my favorite show of the season, loved it!
Great to have a video from Grass Reflection today, Anime is always good. Through in this spring season you can pick and choose.
I actually think Suzume is my favourite out of the recent trilogy of Makoto Shinkai movies. It had the best structure out of the three, I really love the showcase of Japan by having them travel and it's nice for once to have someone like Suzume who is pretty much an ordinary girl getting dragged into all of this mess. 😁
But….hang on. The Mario movie was literally written as an English based film as a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination. The dub in Japanese is literally being produced as a secondary language. Yes, the script was rewritten in Japanese to better fit a Japanese audience, but it is not “the original version.” Like at all.
wtf is that supposed to mean? the SCRIPT WAS WRITTEN IN JAP!! OFC the originaly it was ment for JAPAN like clear your eyes or get a new ones
@@RavenL1337 The script was written by Matthew Fogel, a writer who had worked on other Illumination films. If you look up clips online of the Japanese version, the lip movements don’t match the Japanese language. That’s because it was animated in English.
My eyes are fine, but I can refer you to my optometrist if you need an appointment.
I think he was doing a bit lol
His running vendetta against Ice Guy is hilarious. It was the rival that just wouldn't die. XD
Aren't the discrepancies in the Anime Trending polls due to the fact that they are individualized polls in and of themselves, and people can specifically choose which categories to vote in (perhaps multiple times) and which categories to ignore? That could account for the shows that end up as the umbrella favorites not being the winners in the other more specific categories.
The self-discrediting part of polls like these is when like 50 anime come out in a season and across every category maybe 7 were nominated for anything. And some anime get nominated multiple times for the same award.
Unless you’re on the coast in a major city here in the US, you might as well except that most anime films aren’t going to make it to your Theater and you’ll be lucky if any foreign language films ever make it to your Theater. That’s why I can’t ever get that excited over an anime film being released because I know it’s more than likely not going to come to my area.
Yeah, Japan only cares for certain markets. Mostly ones with high Japanese population, which is why LA, SF, Seattle, Vancouver, and Hawaii get it.
Such a bummer considering the narrative the movie theater companies try to push regarding people not wanting to see movies anymore. Not true! You just only select from a handful of superhero movies and reboots. No variety.
@@nosuperwoman79None of what you said applies to anime movies.
Honestly, a road journey movie about sisterhood or even romantic sounds way better than the final product of Suzume that we all got
For Suzume a sisterhood story would have been perfect with the theme of the movie. Actually it's maybe for that that he made Suzume interact with a lot of other girls
Like Souta was a pretty lame character even Daijin and Souta's friend were more interesting and the romance was pretty bad
Hope he can do a movie where he can actually what he want with characters
Still loved the movie it was really good especially the ost
I would have preferred. The "romance" felt forced and kinda gross given the.... ages
I'm disturbed how Looper and other outlets are saying it was meant to be a lesbian romance. Which isn't what Shinkai said at all.
@@SourRobo8364 modern day journalism at its finest
Yes, I think that's why she was able to meet the new friend and the single mom character who both helped her along the way. I felt like those parts of Suzume's journey along with her conflict with her aunt were the stronger parts of the movie than the romance.
he never said sisterhood. he wanted a lgbt romance. that is what the producers denied.
Spouse and I really enjoyed the Duke of Death and his Maid anime first season. Nice that we can look forward to not only more of that but a new project from the mangaka.
this news videos are such good thing, im loving this things
I for one am happy at the girl-on-chair representation in Suzume; truly an underrepresented demographic.
My problem with Suzume is that all these interesting things happen, but they never connect to each other, even though there was an obvious way to connect them.
I would watch Shinkai bake a cake. But also would love to see anything he wanted to make
Those locations for the Japanese version of the Mario movie correspond to a high Japanese emigrant population. It has nothing to do with anime or the Western audience per se. It's the same as a movie being released with Spanish audio disproportionately in Texas and California compared to the other states. To put it into more Canadian terms, you're going to see more Chinese movies in theatres with Chinese audio in Toronto compared to somewhere random in Newfoundland or New Brunswick. It seems very wrong to put a condescending tone on it when you stand back and think about who the audience is actually meant to be. Repeat after me: not everything Japanese in North America is automatically aimed at weebs. Even if it’s at the intersection of gaming and animation.
Nice video GR
Thanks for tha video
What bloody romance in his movies? Cock tease all the movie and no payoff? Girl friendship is not explored enough in media i feel, that sounded more interesting.
I really loved Suzume. More than Weathering with You. But I definitely agree Shinkai should be allowed to do what he wants because I think I would've loved his original concept even more. I hope this "Your Name" era of films can be over now and we can get something fresh next
The only ending I consistently watched last season was "Without love" from Vinland Saga. I would even sing along. It was almost as good as the opening, which of course I believe to be the best of the season
Man, all the shows that were actually good last season (with the exception of MagiRevo and to a lesser extent Ice Guy) got absolutely *robbed* at this thing. I guess this is just confirmation of why I don't hang out in big anime discussion communities? Like, if this is the state of the discourse…
Love the anime news
Haven't watched Ice Guy, but I checked the ed of every episode and noticed that there are 5 different endings using the same song.
There is:
episode 1, 2 and 3.
episode 4 and 5,
episode 6 and 7,
episode 8, 9, 10 and 11
and lastly a special ending for episode 12.
Induvidually they are nothing special. they are just still images next to the credits. However, the bar for EDs is very low. Having 4 different endings and an ending that continues the last scene of the show, I can see how it might win.
Neat.
I don't even try to understand what comes out of those voting contests. It very rarely has any relation to my preferences, and I could literally not care less about any of them.
As for your three ED criteria, I strongly suspect that most people don't consider how the ED looks and how it related to the show at all. It is very rare that I even watch an ED, but if I do, my sole criterium for watching or skipping is whether or not I like the song.
Considering you covered another new series of a mangaka,Have you talked about VERSUS???
I didn't watch all of the shows last season, but of all the ones I watche Tokyo Revengers definitely had the best ED. Great song, visually interesting, and with great symbolism pertaining to what happens in that season and the motivations of the main characters. Vinland Saga's was also pretty good, but I just couldn't really get behind the song that much.
Hell yeah!!! Super Mario in Japanese is coming to Vancouver, Baby!!!
But isn’t Illumination a famously American studio? Mario might be a Japanese IP but the movie was most definitely intended to be in English first.
I'm glad Tomo chan got your approval haha. Last season it was one of my favourites! I only had time to watch a few anime, the ones i watched all the way were Tomo, Nagatoro and Onimai. Love them all. Dropped the magical princess was, pacing was weird
Oh man, if I had known that this would be the last time that Tristan lost his shit over Ice Guy, i would have brought some popcorn. 😂
Eyyyyyy duke of darkness comes back
English Dub: "It's a me, Mario!
Japanese Dub: "Kono Mario da!!"
Why is mario referring to himself in the 3rd person in Japanese?
or is this just a jojo reference?
@@logikx1325 Yes
Forgot to edit the end part there? You did your ending part twice lol.
I was kind of surprised as to how bad The new Mario film's limited Japanese dub release is in NA. LA could have sparred a screening to Chicago or Atlanta. But no, it had flip off most of the rest of the country. At least Lincoln Square is in downtown Seattle. Then I noticed who was in charge of LA, NY and San Fran. AMC likes to nickle and dime it's patrons. Also Seattle got one because it would be disrespectful of Nintendo to not hole one where the regional offices are.
Dude, there's a reason Anime Expo started in L.A. We're Weeb Central here. We have so many weebs that we can support TWO large anime cons a year. And we have the largest population of Japanese Americans on the North American continent. SF is second and Seattle... Is HQ for Nintendo America as you said. Okay, technically Redmond, but that's just a suburb of Seattle.
L.A. also has suburbs. We have one called Hollywood. Maybe you've heard of it. It's the other reason it makes sense to show it here in so many theaters. This is where the animation industry is, so if you want to get a toon in front of appreciative eyeballs, you can't beat L.A. (NYC is the other major media hub, so that's why they get it.) The Burbank theater location, as an example, is spitting distance from Disney, Dreamworks, and Warner Bros animation departments. The other screens are also located near where the biz is. The very people who will get to do things like vote in numerous award ceremonies that take place at the end of the year. Or finance other productions based on other games.
I would guess that if the Japanese screenings as planned do well, maybe they will expand to a couple more theaters for another go around. Until then, they are going to do this in the locations where they have the best chance of getting the media industry's attention on what are specialized screenings with a more narrow base to attract. And that's not anywhere east of L.A. County.
You should never stifle an artist's creativity sometimes you have failures sometimes you'll have successes That's the point of art
I would love to own a physical copy of super Mario brothers with the Japanese audio
When it comes to anything I have to use the dub I can't read fast enough to keep up with the story I'm borderline legally blind but I also support anyone who wants the subtitled or original Japanese version
While people keep eating that same shit right up as it arrives, movie production won't be likely to try and change the formula. If you want them to make diverse stories, speak with your money.
Good to know, at least, that even Shinkai is tired of doing the same movie time and time again.
well people like "The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten" because it is a super wholesome series thus an escapism from reality with bad stuff happening around, lol, also the Ice Guy ED is constantly changing with each new episode.
>and a New Manga from an Existing Author
i mean have you ever read a manga from an author that doesn't exist
I don't know, isn't Anime trending's system/users 'unusual' in general?....so you are getting what you are paying for.
I felt sezume meeting the girl in the in it really felt like thats the real romance or friendship, the romance part between the boy and sezume felt so god dam forced like no high school girl falls that quickly for a random vagabond boy
I knew that the romantinc stuff was due to the producer... DANG IT, Producers!!! STOOOOP!!!
Hi
When I judge an ED I only am judging based on the music. While Ice Guys... ED is good bordering on great, I definitely don't think it was the best of the season, though it does fit the show really well which only leaves it deficient in the animation department by your criteria. If I judge with all your criteria then I tihnk Tomo-chans ED is probably the best of the season....with only music considered I would vote for Hikari no Ou
Tbh I don't think MagiRevo deserve the best op either Trigun was way better but it didn't make into top 10
“…an existing mangaka…”
Nowadays I take audience polls with a grain of salt. Sure a majority of those who contributed to the poll may have found that The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten or that the ED for The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague as favorable, but that doesn't necessarily translates to them being critically the best anime of the season or the best ED of the season.
Definitely could be just me but if Im choosing an ed my only criteria really is how much I like the song lol so I can see/don't mind Ice guy winning it bc I liked it a lot. There was a shit ton of good eds last season tho. I personally probably wouldve gone with Buddy Daddies ed (such a good vibe/bop), maybe Tokyo revengers but Onimai, Nier, Tomo, Vinland, & Nagatoro all had pretty dope eds
Angel next door is amazing. I love it so much! Thank god tonikawa is back to fill that void
hello, I am a fan of your channel. I look forward to your videos and am always happy when a new one comes out. Please consider never again using the phrase 'San Fran".
About the mario movie, you do know that Illumination is an american animation studio right? That whole spiel about the seeing it "the way it was meant to be seen" is just wrong. It was definitely meant to be seen with english voices. Also Suzume is a good 6-7/10 imo
I think he was being sarcastic there, the tone of voice was very deliberate.
Personally i did feel that the romance in Suzume was a bit forced. It happens a bit too fast over the short period of time that the film takes place, as opposed to in Your Name where each of the two characters still have that feeling with them over a period of years.
I always felt like that was by design though, the romance in Suzume is more so a one sided crush by Suzume, which is why we don’t get anything nearly as romantic or as blunt in this movie.
WTF obviously Ningen had the best ED of the season and High Card had best OP both those shows were only okay but their Ed and Op respectively killed it
I liked High Cards OP and ED, but the OP with "goose bimps" made me grin every time.
Personally I don’t think Belle was anything like Summer Wars? It was a bit too much like Beauty and the Beast at times but other than that it was very different from Hosoda’s other films.
Just what do you think Belle was based on, Steamboat Mickey?
best charaxter development goes to Tristan for his gradual psycological composure unravelling over the Ice Guy and his Cool Female colleague
hahaha, ice guy got you again 🤣🤣. i'm with you honestly, don't get the love for that one
Goddamn producers
It is funny how this list is the only place I have seen anyone even acknowledge the existence of the Angel Next Door Spoils me Rotten. If it is so good, why hasn't anyone else seemed to care?
Because they listened to to many UA-cam experts with zero taste and credibility.
yo
I loved Ice Guy last season but even I admit that the ending wasn't memorable. The opening on the other hand was a banger. If we're going for best ending that would be Onimai and Tomo-chan for certain.
That's NOT what shinkai said. he EXPLICITELY said he wanted a ROMANCE between two girls. the producers also explicitely said "its too soon". do not straightwash his intent.
He explicitely states that he wanted romance between a women and human regardless of gender. Two women would have simply fit his vision better than a straight couple, yet "he is not actively seeking out LGBTQ+".
I'm not saying you are for pointing it out, but if we are being thorough might as well go the full way.
Wait ….. you say that the creator of Suzume said it was supposed to be two girls having a sistery relationship ? Other sources keep saying it was supposed to be romance. Was it taken out of context ?
Suzume?
Sit On My Face: The Anime
Producers: "The audience WANTS boy meets girl."
Me: The audience has never seen a story WITHOUT boy meets girl, so how the f**k would you know? Give me the Shinkai Cut you COWARDS!!!
Weathering with You was fine, I enjoyed it well enough. Not as good as Your Name tho. Suzume I enjoyed more that Weathering, but I don't think the romance was really necessary, and the fact that it was really downplayed was a positive to me. If it was a lesbian love story, I might've enjoyed it even more, and if not me, my sister definitely would have
not sure why people keep saying the Mario movie is "meant to be seen" in Japanese. Just seems overly pretentious to me, since its not a Japanese film.
Saying belle is an our war game rehash feel disingenuous, like I get that it is brought up alongside the two as being part of the set and being a spiritual successor to summer wars, but I think it’s pretty tenuous to call it the same as our war game just because it’s two stories that involve an Internet setting where the protagonist deals with a deemed troublemaker. Like I wouldn’t say konaka is doing the same thing he did in lain just because both are stories of kids dealing with a connectedness and tangibility to the Internet that wasn’t previously perceived and the final conflict comes about when a girl becomes detached and depressed and from the urgings of a god like digital entity breaks down barriers that existed between the two worlds. I wouldn’t characterize Space Dandy as wattanabe rehashing cowboy Bebop with an episodic series about a rag tag crew in space with an aesthetic resembling one that existed in the past. I wouldn’t say con revo is an FMA rehash just because Mizushima and Aikawa returned to the concept of connecting a fantasy world to a parallel implied real world. And I wouldn’t call Mononoke Hime a rehash of Naussicaa just because both center around a conflict between a seemingly untenable relationship between man and nature that is further provoked by a female warlord leader and her technologically devastating weapon which is responded to by nature with a stampede of the natural guardians that made the first appearance in the first action piece of the movie.
Please stop shining a light on this website 😩 their charts are so laughably unreal 😭
trying to deduce the reasoning behind 14 year olds voting for their favorite shows is an empty and pointless endeavor.
Honestly, Weathering With You is one of my favorite films and easily Shinkai's best film and everyone who says otherwise is an absolute clown. Sure, it was similar to Your Name in genre and structure, but it outclasses it in absolutely every concievable way and I will not hear slander otherwise.
Weathering with You wasn’t great.
@@space1101 Very incorrect. Get out.
Not gonna lie, boy meets girl story is why I enjoy watching these movies as my wife enjoys them too. If it went lesbian/gay or girl+chair it seems like massive loss of the point of his whole movie. I kinda see why Suzume flopped in the west.
Buddy Daddies was robbed! It was one of the best shows of the season by far.
I just quit my job listening to this
The reason I like "Angel Next Door..." ? When I watched it, I had two thoughts: 1 - this is so unrealistic, suddenly a hot girl next door starts basically living with you and cooking for you. 2 - I wish I was that guy!
So don't try to look for sophisticated romance or beautiful animation. NO! This is a "guilty pleasure" type of anime. It's popular because you relate to the ML.
I have a pretty strong dislike for all shinkai moves because imo the stories being told don't deserve the budget they are getting so i was actually excited to hear that. But hearing him go from boy meets girl to sisterhood sounds like the same kind of story just without a romance so looks like he will never make a movies i enjoy.
I really haven't been interested in watching Suzume BECAUSE it just seemed like Your Name all over again, I hope they let Shinkai do what he wants instead of limiting him to what they think the audience wants next time.
Anime Trending is voted by primarily by children, I thought everyone knew that, Idk how you can take that site seriously or why you'd be disappointed by it.
I wish Shinkai had gone with his gut for Suzume. Anime, for all it's greatness has some really tiresome stereotypes. Characters specially women being in high school, boy meets girl love stories. I'm glad someone is getting the urge to break them. Hopefully he goes for it next time.
Man, Suzume was amazingly great movie, but I don't like that the Male Lead and Female Lead even had a romance aspect... it's.. bad. For spoiler reasons lol.
I enjoyed Angel Next Door, but it's not at all the anime of the season. Lame. Sounds like an issue of poor population sampling.
a shame shinkai was forced into a formula
Also, I think you can’t say you can’t recommend the series when you only gave it an episode or two. With all due respect to a host opinion, I believe they should actually watch the entirety of angel next door and then say if it’s a show to be recommended or not:
As someone who found Angel Next Door to be boring and really enjoyed Ice Guy, the ED song's good but definitely not the best of the season lol.
Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten is most likely the Anime of the Year
For me, Weathering with You was terrible. And quite frankly, I really enjoyed Your Name, but for me it marks the beginning of Shinkai's decadence. The narrative, emotional pacing and engagement in Voice of a Distant Star IMO is 10 billion times superior to anything in Your Name. 2 billion points if you get the reference.
