    Porco Rosso is undeniably my favorite Ghibli film. The way it captures such an interesting time between World War 1 and 2, and how it's almost like a last send-off to innocent freedom in a way is incredible. The setting is straight vibes, and all of it is tied together with the strong theme of denial and cowardice. I could honestly make a 40 min video just singing my praises for the film, but I understand if you're looking for something a little more fantastical from your ghibli films.

      I'm Italian so I might be biased, but in Porco Rosso Miyazaki condemned fascism way better than we ever did in the last 40 years. It's also the most melancholic Ghibli movie, the airplane graveyard scene is haunting and mesmerizing, and Porco's relationship with Gina reeks of regret and trauma over what happened in WW1. Porco in general is one of Miyazaki's most complex characters.

    Porco Rosso is my absolute favorite. The scene where he ascends into the sky and the stars become dead pilots breaks my heart. The self loathing nature of his survivor's guilt acting as a constant aspect of his appearance speaks to me deeply. I am in love with the music, the song Bygone Days especially, I actually own it on vinyl. It is my favorite, its cooky premise contradicting the severity of the universe is what really sells the whole film to me. Better to be a pig than a fascist :)

    • @michaelangelo2192
      @michaelangelo2192 Місяць тому +12

      I agree wholeheartedly with everything said here. It's that scene where he's on the beach and tells the story you mention that cements the film as not just good, but great. 'Bygone Days' is indeed the standout, but the whole soundtrack is exceptional (I love all of the reprised versions of Bygone Days too, like 'A Picture in Sepia'). One of ghibli's very best imo.

    Tale of princess kaguya will always be my personal favorite.
    The sheer talent and work that goes behind the animation is one of the main reason, the fluidity of it all, the charcoal-like japanese inspired drawings, the use of color, the way the whole movie takes its time with many of the frames really add to the the whole thing.
    It was the one movie that intruced me to the myth 6 years ago , and i can't even remember how many i've watched it, and it still gut punches me everytime, that's just how good the emotional story telling is.

It’s one of those movies that I wish I could exist in. There’s so many moments that I love, even the simple ones like Sheeta waking up to Pazu playing music for the doves or them talking in the birds nest of the ship, even them just eating eggs off of toast. On an unrelated note, while I see Princess Mononoke as the traditional "kubrick level" masterpiece, I do think that Spirited Away is perfect in a way that's completely unexpected. No matter how many times I watch it, I just can't find a single flaw: every step of the story engraved into film like an old oddyssey. Some of Miyazaki's and most of Takahata's movies fit into the first category for me, while Spirited Away rises as some sort of unearthly thing, a work of wonder.

It's hard to explain cause it's got a lot to love character and animation wise, but it doesn't have a lot of moments that are enthralling.

    Porco Rosso is undeniably the best for me. It's not nearly as bombastic as its contemporaries but I would argue that that's a part of its charm. Its a film about subtle beauty and the little things as well as what happens when they're made to seem smaller than they are. Like most Miyazaki directed pictures I feel there's one scene that encapsulates the theme better than the others. It's when Curtis and Gina see Porco flying back from Milan. The scene opens with Gina denying Curtis's advances. She's waiting for the love of her life. When the red biplane soars overhead, she watches it in awe and recalls a scene from childhood: one where she's flying in a plane with Marco when he was still human. She laments that he has not landed yet again and Curtis is surprised. "You'd choose that stupid pig over me?" he asks. "That's right." Gina says. "Love is a little bit more complicated here than it is in America..." The subject of Gina and Porco's unrequited romance speaks to me very deeply. Porco remains a pig because he can't accept himself. He is the lost generation personified; riddled with survivor's guilt and unable to move forward. All he has is a dream from childhood, that of flying above the world and its problems. The war tainted that dream, making a weapon of a man who just wanted to be free. Free to live and to love. He refuses to acknowledge Gina's love for him until it's quite literally beaten into him by Curtis at the end of the film. Although we never see it, it is eluded that he becomes human after this. Gina's love represents the possibility that the war was not the end of the world. That life may continue although terrible things have happened. Fio gives it to Porco as well. Her bustling energy against all odds is symbolic to him of what he's lost. He's human for a while while she sleeps because he's starting to come to. I think it's a wonderfully sweet story and one that visually captures the merriment of flight unlike any other Miyazaki picture. The Wind Rises comes close to it but Porco Rosso has this balance of fantastical whimsy sprinkled onto its realism that is just *chef's kiss.

While the plot might not be super strong, the characters quite comfortably carry the whole movie. Porco is such an endearing character and has such strong chemistry with everyone, especially Fio. Fio is one my favorites of if not my favorite in a massively stacked list of awesome Ghibli women. The pirates make for such an enjoyable antagonist. The opener is so strong too, the pirates kidnapping a group of preschoolers on a trip and then said preschoolers running laps around them while Porco talks shit with them using his morse code flasher thing is just excellent. As Laputa is made of advanced technology preserving both the castle and the plant vegetation, it is implied that the technologies in Nausicaa (that Nausicaä herself used to purify and preserve the plants in her secret hideout) were further developed throughout the years and implemented. Both movies also have fox squirrels, further implying the two movies are set in the same region. An additional fun fact worth noting: the squirrel-fox species were going extinct in Nausicaä, Teto being the last few of his kind, however, in CITS the Laputan castle preserved their vegetation, keeping them from extinction.

    Kiki's Delivery Service was my first Ghibli movie and will always be my favourite. I was five years old and thought it was so cool that the character had the same nickname as me. Nowadays I really relate to the movie's coming-of-age narrative, and the scenes where Kiki's experiencing burnout hit even harder than they ever have. SG has more emotional, more expansive films, but Kiki is still the one closest to my heart.
    Also I want to live in Ursula's art cabin Very, Very Badly

    Porco Rosso is m'y FAVORITE Ghibli movie. Not to be edgy but for feal. The vibe is incredible, i coudnt explain why. Its so nostalgic, it makes me fall in love with being at peace. Just want to grab a glass of wine, watch the sun and watch my life goes by. (Also the music is just magnificient)

    The first movie I remember seeing was spirited away. My dad is a film buff and he made sure I had seen most of the studio ghibli films before I was 10. I’m really glad he did. Spirited Away his and my favorite movie.

    Whispers of heart is my personal favorite, I was struggling with my life and then I watched it, and I felt identify by it, and until now is my favorite ultimate film... Why? I don't know, any time that I watch it its like magic, is like watching myself on another dimension, because Shizuku is precios and she feels real, she failed (the most terryfing thing to me) but that's okay and at the same time It's not failure because that doens't exist. This movie is my worries and my dreams; I recommend you to watch it when you feel loose. I love Ghibli films because they are made with heart and effort, and as they are made we should aprecciate them.
