Creating LANDSCAPES IN Blender with the Free ANT Landscapes Add-On
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- In today’s video, we’re going to talk about a free, built-in add-on for Blender that allows you to quickly generate landscapes!
This add-on should come loaded inside of Blender in a new installation. You can find it by going into your preferences, add-ons, and searching for A.N.T landscape. Note that you must include the periods for it to show up.
When you enable this add-on, what it does is adds the ability for you to add a new kind of mesh - the landscape mesh. You add it just like any other kind of mesh - Shift+A, then under “Mesh,” look for “Landscape.”
This will add a landscape mesh into your Blender 3D workspace. You can adjust the landscape mesh by changing the various settings contained inside of the ANT menu.
Basically what this tool does is it adds a mesh inside of blender, then it uses noise functions to create different kinds of landscapes.
The first thing I want to point out, because it’s easy to miss, is there’s actually a drop-down with a number of different presets up above, so if you’re trying to create a certain kind of landscape, you might want to try to find something similar here, then build on top of that.
Once you’ve selected a mesh preset, you can adjust the settings down below to customize your mesh however you’d like. Adjustments are fairly easy, and as long as you have the refresh button above checked, they should happen live on your screen.
One thing to note - try not to click into the workspace - as soon as you do this, it will close down your window, which can be very frustrating. Note that you can tap the F9 key to open it back up unless you make another change in your window.
If you make another change in the window, you can still go back and make changes, but you’re going to edit with the menu that you can find by tapping “n” and clicking on the create button. Notice at this point, changes are no longer live - you have to click the “refresh” button to make changes.
The main settings section is going to adjust settings having to do with your overall mesh.
The subdivisions option controls the amount of geometric detail that’s going to be contained inside your mesh - more subdivisions = more detail, but also more geometry.
The mesh size will actually drive the size of the mesh that’s being created.
The noise settings are going to affect the noise that’s used to create the shape of your mesh. There are a TON of things you can adjust and change here, and notice that your options adjust based on the presets you select as well.
Let’s select the preset for “large terrain” to get a look at how this might work. The seed is going to adjust the base values that Blender uses to calculate your terrain - every time you change this, you get a completely different result.
The offset function will “move” your noise along the x and y axes, while the size will stretch the noise - be careful with this as it can create kind of a “distorted” look.
Now, let’s look at the displace settings - these settings adjust how high or low your mesh is generated. These can be used to create mountains, plateaus, valleys, and more!
The height adjusts how high the ups and downs of your landscape go. Note that you can set a limit to the height, which will then flatten off the tops of your mountains above a certain height.
The little double arrow will flip your landscape.
Falloff allows you to set if your noise goes all the way to the edges of your mesh, or if it gradually drops so the edges of your mesh stay flat.
Finally, the water plane adds a plane that you can apply a water material to to simulate water. We can talk about creating a shader in the future that simulated water.
That should give you a good idea of how the add-on works - in the next video, we can talk a bit about how to apply materials to these objects to make them more realistic!
Hi everyone! Let me know what you think about this add-on in the comments below! :)
what is if that "another noise tool - landscape" window not even shows up in the first place?
@@redshot5710 Did you enable it?
Fantastic add-on and video! And I'm finding the way that lets the offset keyframes are able to be animated and the 'refresh' feature is sparking at each frame automatically- If this is possible, this addon could be used for making great animation for uncountable shapes of growling landscape by this addon. Is there some way for solving this issue?
@@TheCGEssentialshow im confused on this aswell

Honestly learning the F9 key to reopen the menu was the most life saving thing in this tutorial for me, thanks a BUNCH
THANK YOU!!! I was struggling so much with that!!
thankyou
iim spaming F9 but the menu still doesnt show up
@@_casg😢 same here
Oh yea! F9 does work!
this is gonna do what previously took me 5hrs to make in 2 minutes
You have the best tutorials out there so far. It is very clear, straight to the point and very informative. Thank you for making these tutorials!
Trying my best!
Can't believe it. I mean, I was learning how to do this manually and than saw this 3yo video and... damn...
THank you, sir, for that. And for magical bottom too)))
Great job....just started exploring this addon..... applying materials and water nodes would be a nice choice for the next tutorial 👍👏🦫🇺🇸💰😎💪👌
I cant find the preset menu
Absolutely first class. presentation clear and distinct better than the last one I saw. look forward to more of this. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! The part about the f9 key to recover your options was especially helpful!
This is the best blender video i have EVER seen!!!! Jumping for joy for my thesis work with this hahah
Hey, thank you, this is a really good overview of this tool. Got me out of a bind! Did you do a followup with procedural texturing? It'd be great if such a thing existed, I'm trying to mock up some basic farmland in an enclosed flat valley.
amazing tutorial, I am new to blender but learning fast on building landscapes and out doors scenes and this tutorial helped a lot. Thanks!

great video buddy....your content is always matching viewers expectation like .....please continue the good work...

...dont have this with 3.0...I think I cant find it
Me either, I can't see a menu for the different pre-sets 1:08, using 3.0 apparently press F9 but all I get is a message saying refresh.
All you do is tap the N key - go to create - then go to landscape. This will work with 3.0 and up
@@itsdw2323 thanks for the input, I didn't know that N pulls out and hides the menu bar, thanks! , but we already know about that menu, what we don't get is the "Another noise tool" it ain't here in blender 3.5, do you see it?
@@GamingPoliz1 i dont have it either
@@S3ssion i found it , it's at the bottom left of the screen, just that the UA-camr cut that part out for some reason? , Hope this message helps !
This was awesome! Love your tutorials. Thank you for this!
THIS IS THE COOLEST ADD-ON EVER.
It is pretty awesome :)
Who missing menu and dont work "F"9. Select with mouse terrain, press "N" and on right side in very little "CREATE" shortcut button on side of window, then select "Landscape" and press button with name of terrain.
Thanks buddy. I did not know this add on. As a concept artist this is really time saver for me :)
Glad I could help!
Really helpful tutorial. Lots of options to this tool that can make it more than a little confusing. What I'm looking for is some way to create a realistic mountain with erosion and snow details. Thanks a lot Justin!
Your tutes are so easy to understand. Thank you.
This is soo helpful andsaves me alot of work thank you for making this
Great vid.
Is this Landscape Plugin (or something similar) included in Blender 3?
Thank you for making it easy to understand. Can you update for the new Blender upgrades?
Thank you, it's a great video. I want to make a pond underneath a cliff and a small waterfall, so this should be good for me. I thought I'd have to make the cliff manually, but I'm glad I don't. It's nice when tools exist that make creating things quick and easy, especially since I don't expect I'll have much time to work on this.
Thank you for that. Came at the right time for me. Keep them coming. :)
Another great tutorial!
Great Tutorial, Loving the work that you are doing
Thank you very much 💖💖. Your tutorials are so helpful 👌💖
Very good explained!
thank you i was watching your sketch up videos too youre a good teacher!
Thanks very much! Glad I could help!
Did you make the material for this landscape build and the water for it? I’m curious how to do I’m new to blender so this is all new for me :D
Really helpful, thank you! Looking forward to the adding materials video. I hope it uses particles. :)
That was very helpful! Thx
Good job! Enjoy your videos and very helpful.
it's insane i am finding this 4 years later
Hello! I can't see the preset option like i can see only default option in the preset setting nothing else.
Very useful! Thanks!
Thank you so much! Great video as always.
Glad you enjoyed it!
very nice explanation, thank you!
Wow. I'm new to Blender.
Does all of this still apply to 3.0,
Or has it been more refined?
P.S. you are always my go-to tutor.
Very clear and concise method of teaching. 👍
I believe everything in this one should still apply to Blender 3.0+
This is amazing thanks for the video!
Glad you liked it!
Very informative. Thank you.

Great!!! It helped me a lot.
The operator presets is blank for me. I hit restore operator defaults and still no presets show up. Do you have a suggestion?
Thank you so much, Its very useful.
Life saver...thank you so much!!
Nice man, Thanks !
Nice tut. how to uv unwrap and texture ANT landscape ? can u plz guide..
You ALWAYS have the best addons to share with us I hope you get more subscribers!
Lol - thanks! :)
Thanks Justin. Would you recommend this ANT if you have a specific shape or contouring in mind? I'm not talking GIS data, just a specific landscape formation.
Probably not - this one's more for using noise/algorithms to generate procedural landscapes - if you wanted a specific shape I'd just subdivide a plane and use the move tool with proportional editing
@@TheCGEssentials Thanks for answering. That's what I used to do in much older 3D software but things have moved on a lot since 1996. :)
great video, thanks! Id be great if you can do a video on applying materials to this
Hey is there a video of how to texture these landscapes using these plugins?
I badly need help!!! Is there anyway I can add procedural material to the ant landscape instead of texturing it with UV mapping? Hello pleasee !!!
If you lose the menu on the side.. it loads back up from where you left off if you add the landscape mesh again
i can't get the menu for the different presets. could use some help
Love your videos!! you do one on one training?
Really helpful!
So I enabled it… shift A gives me landscape and one will come into scene…. But I don’t have the sidebar w all the presets toolbar thingy you have to the left of screen… how do I view it?
me too
Hi Justin,
Thank you very much for you tutorials. I'm just learning Blender and these have been very helpful. Would it be possible to do a follow up on this video that shows step-by-step on to get a texture, import it and render a beautiful landscape? You have a follow up video that uses a different addon but it goes way too fast for a newbie.
Possible - I haven't quite gotten around to doing this yet - I did talk a bit about height based texturing here - ua-cam.com/video/ksZbiYR3WQ4/v-deo.html
The CG Essentials Great, thank you for the reply. I’ll check out that video.
bro u are a god!
thanks dude i need this
:)
for some reason I don't have the add on?
yeah me neither :/
nvm, its in the extensions tab now. Not the add on tab.
Excellent video! I just wish there was some way to keep the menu up (or getting it back), when clicking off the landscape.
Totally agree - losing the menu is very frustrating
@@TheCGEssentials so there's no way to get the menu back once i accidentally close it? :(
@@samyadeep906 You can try tapping the F9 key, but it very rarely works
@@TheCGEssentials yes, I tried and it's working

What if my Preset menu isn’t appearing for some reason? I was able to install the landscape but once I click it the landscape uploads, but I don’t get the preset menu you have on the side.
Love u man! Thanks :D
Instantly gained a sub.
Thanks! :)
Ty!
How did you open the menu for the thingy?, Sorry I'm very new to blender
What's up! A bit off topic, but I'm a Sketchup-user trying to find a way to drape things onto terrain in blender. Would love a tutorial for that! In my case, i'm trying to model a siteplan in 2d and drape roads and housing lots on 3d terrain...
how to appear another noise tool ??? Contours can be generates??
im in 3.0 and the presets are gone :( or at least I cant find them. Any advice?
Bro theres a second landscape menu, u can open it by pressing (numpad .) Its also by the bottom left of the viewport.
Thank you 🙏🏼
great ! thanks a lot !
Thanks a lotn nice explications
Glad you liked it
I am new to Blender, so can someone help me? I was able to follow along up to the point of creating the landscape..When I pressed "Landscape", The setting bar that is labeled, "Another Noise tool-landscape" did not pop up. Where can I find this in settings? Thanks in advance! :)
and how do we texture that ?
That menu disappearing is so annoying! THANK YOU
mine will not install landscape it use to have all the time in blender but now it doesn't have it that's dumb it keeps getting me ( Traceback / most recent call ) don't know why
Greetings! Since then (3 years ago) A.N.T Landscape have made changes and we no longer have the presets options! What a pity!
Unless they changed this in 3.6, I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. I've been using presets much more recently than 3 years ago
@@TheCGEssentials I have opened the add-oh in version 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 and at no time did the program offered me any preset options! Amazing as this may sound.
@@michaelpenco546 I found them. Just look for the menu in the lower left corner. Sometimes it can be minimized.
@@mora_667 W
Pls help when I add landscape in viewport another noise tool disable.i can't enable same this will when add happen in uv sphere plsss hlepp
thank you thank you thank you❤
How do you pull up the A.N.T tool bar? It doesn't show up for me and many others and doesn't seems like anyone has answer on how to pull it up either.
I don't understand the question. You enable the add-on and then using Shift-A in the viewport you add an ANT landscapes item. Once you click off the item, it's done being generated - you can't call the menu back as this is an older tool (not built on geometry nodes)
@@TheCGEssentials Ah that's probably why, yes is the bar on the left side that you were editing with. I guess the newer version does not have that anymore.
Thanks
I think now Blender has that painting tools and we don't need this add-on anymore, correct?
What do painting tools have to do with a procedural terrain generation tool?
@@TheCGEssentials I don't know.. I'm a noob :)
Is there no way to create roads on these landscapes
The menu for the options of the terrain on the left side doesn’t show up for me when I create the objekt. Does anyone know what i’m doing wrong? Well I did manage to fix it. But now, the operator presets doesn’t show up. I’m using the newest version of it. Does anyone know what i’m doing wrong NOW or where it is located in the newer versions?
Did you ever find a solution? Sometimes the sidebar tool goes away (even the minimized version at the bottom left of the screen), and I have to restart to bring it back.
@@aaronlea-art You have to press a key. I don’t quite remember what it was. Like f2 or something like that

Thanks for watching!
PBR texture don't really work with ANT Landscapes
I love you for this man. But mine doesn’t automatically generate the menu unless I hit the create tab. Blender 2.93.1
I don't understand
In your video. The tab on the far left. It doesn’t open when I create a new landscape. But I figured it out. Thanks though
Landscape Tool is very interesting... ⛰️
It really is!
Ok delete landscape and drop it in again to get menu to appear again, the minute you click onto something else it disappears. Apparently F9 can bring it back but it didn't for me.
Yeah F9 works sometimes but not always. Not sure why that is, but I'm really hopeful this tool gets updated with geometry nodes so this isn't an issue anymore
@@TheCGEssentials Thanks for your reply. Yeah funny you should say that, because it seems to popup more frequently now. So perhaps it was a bug.
The worst problem I had with Blender, is I created a boat animating on water and the foam would disappear after creating a copy and renaming one of the files. Luckily I had a backup on a pen drive. Perhaps Blender is known for one or two bugs?
Just one more thing we really appreciate your tutorial over here in England. A lot of us haven't done any 3D VFX designs and the course is based more on Houdini, so to have someone like you simplifying everything is really helpful!! Thanks.
So please someone help me, how do I enable the properties at the left side? Mine doesn't come automatically when I call the landscape mesh.
Press F9.
