I'm actually playing Blade of Darkness right now. as soon as I saw this video I thought to myself "I should recommend he puts that in the next video" but of course you beat me to it :P
Blade of Darkness definitely inspired Souls series, at the very least Demon Souls. One of the first boss fights of Demon Souls (Phalanx i think?) even had soundtrack which sounds nearly identical to one of the combat themes of Blade of Darkness. Also at the time there were not that many grim medievalesque dungeon crawlers with brutal melee combat so certain likeness should not be coincidental. With that said, i wish some modern melee brawlers would implement the number of attacks Blade of Darkness gave you. Also the quick sidestep needs to reappear. Maybe upcoming reboot of Lords of the Fallen will have the quicker movement.
FUN FACT Shadows: Awakening (2018) was previously named "Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms : book 1", and then I was waiting for the "book 2" which were to continue your story with your character, I kept saves... And then they merged two "games" into one "shadows: awakening"... save didn't work :( But the game was fun! Also: Game were made to consoles with it and the UI were redesigned for consoles... I'm a PC player, it was not enjoyable UI for me :(
Shadows Awakening is a Remake of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms. I remember playing it on launch it had a location that crash the game, so people ocmplained on the forum, they closed that place in a update and deleted all forum mentions of ir, later they relased a dlc with access to that place, they clearly removed the location to sell as a dlc.
i double checked, and the voice guy in Shadows Awakening isn't Troy Baker. it was TOM Baker, also known as the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who. but otherwise good video.
I still remember a review in some gaming magazine from a very long time ago. I think it was fairly positively received and it always looked quite interesting.
Hey C4G, here's one really obscure game that I wonder if anyone on this world knows it. Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader. It was one of my first games ever, so it has a special place in my heart!
@@Syaniiti My thoughts exactly, if C4G would play this I expected he would rightfully say that. Especially at the late stages, it became a mindless HnS and had already lost its charm
hey @click4gameplay great job, thanks for digging up and bringing all those forgotten / overseen games back to my radar. I'd like to mention that BoD ( Severance: Dlade of Darkness ) have not been remastered - just 'brought' to steam - it was an abandonware for some time ( I regret BoD have not get deserved success ) - but game had and will have a very devoted community - check Anniversary Mods ( with all those eye candy blows and whistles, difficulty enhancements etc). This game might not make a great first impression but you just falling in love with it, you cant help it. Also - bow mechanics is amazing! Cheers.
@click4gameplay - try play as a Knight, this character has the most finesse in weapon handling, a lot of satisfaction. Do not bother by Amazon Girl, staff is overpowered, rather less fun, but - play as an Amazon and use swords - that makes game a looot more challenging. Also give a try Anniversary Mod - BLADE of LIGHT v20Aniversary MOD ENB
What upsets me the most about these games, is how much i didn't even know they existed back in the day... if i had i would have played them all, likely would have pirated them, but this is a scenario where if that was how i played it, i would have RAVED about them and i know i would have nostalgia bought all of them on gog, and i would champion most of them for a remake. which is why i really appreciate your channel man! GG
Apologies if you've already covered this game but I remember Rune: Viking Warlord on PS2 being pretty cool if you're looking for games that might fit this list.
I don't think we'll be seeing any PS2 games being played on here, but if we did, I would definitely recommend Summoner II. I really want to play it again, I loved that game, but I don't want to set up my PS2 again. Also, I don't know where my PS2 is.
How is Blade of Darkness a hack and slash, you die horribly when you play it like that. Timing, positioning, knowledge about enemy placement. All those things are important getting through that game. Add to that the level layouts, minimal storytelling and it makes perfect sense why people call this the granddaddy of soulslikes. I love that two handed sidestep-and-slash, and allways whished the soulsgames implemented that move for twohanded parries.
I don’t know, I played it and enjoyed it, but I personally wouldn’t compare it to Souls. I think it has a similar design philosophy, but the execution is different enough that I wouldn’t necessarily call it a Soulslike. For one, it uses manual saving instead of checkpoints (which are a core element of Souls design). Two: while player positioning is important, actual dodging and blocking were practically useless. Three: the combo system makes it feel like a traditional action game. Four: stamina isn’t really that important. In a lot of ways I felt like it played like a more action heavy, arcade-y version of Gothic with the directional attacks.
When I think of a directional arcady version of gothic in that era "Die by the sword" fits that description much better. Comparing that game with Severance shows a clear difference in controlling your character with intent, timing, sense of position, or controlling your character with wild abandon (yes I'm overstating the difference a wee bit). I have to admit though, it's playing the barb with his two handed sidestep parry move that draws the comparison with an essential part of the souls games in my eyes. But that move seeped into how I played the game in all it's facets, which is why I value it the way I do I guess. There's another game (genre) that does that, metroidvania. It's not the gameplay where the comparison is to he found, but progressing through the world, another defining trait of the souls games. And there's a third, the Mystgames, which is harder to see. Myst and especially Riven excelled at environmental storytelling beside the puzzles, which many will say is another defining trait of soulsgames. Are any of the above games soulslikes? No. But it is is easy to see similarities between core elements and I have no qualms about calling the soulsgames a metroidvania for instance (though I wouldn't call them a Mystgame). What was great about Demon's Souls is that the technology was finally there to make it click so well. And at a great time too because the now dreaded quicktime event was taking over, and Demon's (among others) showed there was no need to go there.
@@tevildo9383 dodging and blocking are extremely useful in the game, specially with the knight, stamina is also extremely important since for example, a lot of special attacks can completely deplete it and make you open to damage. Sounds like you didn't learn the game very deeply ( did you finish it ? )
@@spankg888 I have finished it once with a Bold rating (I don't how much that means to people who have played the game more than me). I played as the Barbarian because that's my preferred build in Souls games. So blocking was pretty much useless as that character because it breaks your weapons. Could just be my experience, but I found strafing to be much more effective than dodging. Stamina is important; I think I meant to say Stamina management is not. Because the dodging doesn't work like Souls games, there's no balance between using stamina to attack and defend, so you can kind of just strafe and spam lower cost combos. Stamina also regenerates very quickly.
M&M mod that combines 5, 7 and 8 is great, one party for all of it. Then again Wizardy 6-8 are also gold, Ultima is also a legendary series but apart from 9 might be a bit too retro for this channel. None of those are forgotten or obscure though to be honest.
Blade of darkness is a hack and slash masterpiece. Combos can feel difficult but can easily be managed if u practice well. It was far superior being such an old game. It beats many new ages games still in game design. Amazon is the best class Also give shot to underrated The Last Remnant from Square Enix if u haven't already. It is a must play.
btw if you love the precise sword control with chopping off limbs then Revengeance is awesome. Also while we're talking about precise sword control I suggest Die By The Sword (on GOG). I remember if from being a kid, no idea if it's as good as i remember
I really want to get my hands on Blade of Darkness, its on my GOG wishlist. Have you tried the old rpg Silver yet? I remember playing it around the time it came out, and it was a kinda western final fantasy-like, but real time combat with some weird mouse-combo attacks. Really unique game, that doesn't seem to be well known, which is weird, as I remember it got quite good review scores.
Surprise your entire rpg action adventure list did not include the overlord series Which is a mixture of fable and Pikmin and you play as Sauron and for some reason it is written very Month pythonie Generally people are either in love with it or find it mediocre would like to see your input
I love this series, and I'm pleasantly surprised that I know of and/or have played as many as I have seen on it. Seeing as how I've played stuff like Sudeki, HUNTED: The Demon Forge, Venetica and Rise of the Argonauts already, I thought I was content just sitting on the sidelines and letting other people's suggestions go and just going along for the ride. Just see what you play and enjoy because the vids are always enjoyable. However, since you recently covered some console games, and _I_ have recently nabbed a pretty obscure title and have been finding it really enjoyable, I figured I'd toss out a suggestion for you to add to your list in case no one else has. Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll is a stage-based action-RPG from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force studio (the Warriors guys, but also action-RPGs like Dragon Quest Heroes or Persona 5 Strikers) that no one remembers. There is a map screen, so you can choose locations after you get quests from a guild, but no real world exploration beyond that - the focus is on getting you into the stages and into the real time action, and it's surprisingly dynamic. I remembered it from an old demo back in the day, but didn't nab a copy until recently, and forgot that it involves a lot of elemental things. For example, you have a fire spell, so in certain environments you can light the tumble weeds on fire and knock them around during battle and watch as all the enemies get lit on fire. You can freeze enemies in water too. The big dude in your party can pick up chunks of the environment you bust up, like stone pillars and tree trunks, and use them as weapons - stuff like that. It's certainly not a looker, and has a really ugly post-processing filter over the visuals to make them look "sketchier" and more like a fantasy illustration (I THINK that's what the intention was), but it's really fun and completely forgotten. If you don't have it on your list of games to check out, I think you should add it on there, C4G. *Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll,* a Playstation 3 exclusive. Other than that, just wanted to say this series rocks and this video is great - I love seeing you shine a light on so many games that are so interesting, whether they're good or bad. Keep it up!
Nice video. I played Silverfall on the PSP and have Shadows on PS4 in my backlog and thinking of giving it a try now. If you haven`t played them yet, I would recommend Knights of the Temple: Infernal Crusade, Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance and the two Conan games for Xbox (from TDK/Cauldron) and Xbox 360 (from THQ/Paradox).
Can you please review Summoner: A Goddess Reborn? You can only play it via an PS2 or nintendo emulator. It was my favorite childhood game, but no one knows about it.
Would you consider covering Neverwinter Nights 2? Specifically the complete version. While the original was pretty popular Neverwinter Nights 2 wasn't as the base game had some legitimate criticisms. But the expansions in my opinion made it a better game than the original.
Nice to see Shadows: bad title here, it's been on my wishlist for a while. In the same genre, I'd recommend trying Van Helsing final cut. I haven't played many diablo-like so I don't know how it compares combat-wise, but you get 6 very different classes, a snarky ghost companion with her own ability tree, tons of item customization if that's your thing, a really cool gothic steampunk world, rewarding exploration. The story is better than expected for this kind of game and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also tons of pop culture easter eggs (maybe too many)
Have you played Soul Reaver? It might fit the bill for this series. Another one you could check out is Warlords Battlecry, which is a combination RPG and RTS. Though I'd specifically recommend 2 (for deeper stats and better spells) or 3 (for better items and weapons, as well as a more fleshed out world).
When the developer shills for the use of a console gamepad before the main menu even loads, it is a huge red flag. You should know at this point that the developers have no clue what they are doing or what they are talking about. This is true for over 90% of the cases I've ever come across.
I can recommend Shadow's Awakening. It's a great game. Would NOT say it's Diablo like, though. It is just an RPG. I HATE Silverfall. When you die, all your items are left where you died. If you died because of too many enemies, you have to go back, unarmed, with no armour, and try to get your items back - it's impossible!
I think you would like Draconus. Cult of the Wyrm for the Sega Dreamcast. Great action rpg. You can play through it 3 times. There is a male Warrior fully voiced and a woman spell caster also fully voiced. There's is some pretty funny dialog in it too.
I may have misunderstood what you said, but the voice of Krenze is Tom Baker (Doctor Who - 4th Doctor) not Troy Baker. Edit: This is for Shadows Awakening. Probably should have mentioned that. :)
The best game mentioned in this video is Gothic 3. Seriously, though, I think I would like Blade of Darkness if there was a mage class, but it looks like it is all just melee. Did you play Eye of the Dragon? It is really fun old school RPG, I think you can add that to the list too.
Wait, Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard had a prequel? I bought it, thinking it was going to be the first of many games, only to find out that it was abandoned by the developer, Kalypso, I believe, who also put out the series Shadows: Awakening, which apparently also had a prequel, and was also apparently abandoned by Kalypso. Both would have done fine if they’d followed through on them and if they’d put more attention to detail into character creation and customization and more class and play style options, not to mention higher level caps, especially in Shadows: Awakening. I also think they both would have done a lot better if they’d come up with better names for the pilot games of each series. ATTENTION, DEVELOPERS: I feel like I shouldn’t need to say this; like this should be obvious, but launch/pilot games need a catchy/epic sounding name and ALWAYS have got to be solid (in regard to 3 main aspects: 1. Controls, preferably with full button remapping options, like Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout games, 2. Game mechanics, ie…RE 1-6, Dino Crisis 1 & 2, any game out of the Onimusha series, and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, and 3. Graphics, which really shouldn’t be that hard; as long as they’re at least on par with other games released the same year or so if you want them to do well. If Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard had been called simply VALHALLA or MIDGARD, I think it would have done much better. As for Shadows: Awakening, I haven’t played it, and now have no intention of playing it, EVER, being that it was abandoned by Kalypso, just like Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard. However, if it had a more simple, epic sounding title, it would also have done a lot better. Lesson learned: STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM KALYPSO GAMES.
If you liked Blade Of Darkness, you can try another ancient classic called Rune (the first one). It didn't have an upgrade for new systems, but on the plus side I was able to play it on CPU graphics somehow about 10 yeara ago. That Viking game reminded me of Kyn for some reason which I never got far in tbh, but it had some decent features and good music, wonder if it's worth exploring further.
Played Viking and Blade of Darkness from this batch. Viking is way underrated. I mean yeah, it looks like some HDR bloom blur was sick on your screen, but it's a fun game. Better sequel to Rune than Rune 2 was :P Mediocre game, but I like it.
Got confused when Warlander came up number 1, there's a free kind of 3d MOBA style game called Warlander that just released (I think) that I played on PS5 the other day...not very good imo, played for 5 mins and got rid of it. Viking...is a game I kind of love. It's janky as hell but you kind of get used to the clunky combat, and I love the idea of building up an army for a big battle. Wish we could see a modern take on that kind of game.
No, I don't think so. I've played a lot of Din's Curse. It's very enjoyable early on, but gets brutal unless you build your character carefully. Might benefit from a console version.
It is not. Seven: Days Long Gone is. Winter Ember is pathetic excuse for a game. Bugs (randomly respawning enemies in a f. stealth game), unclear "puzzles" + very plain and boring story. Yes, I finished it.
Ah, Warlander. The combat was a ton of fun, but the progression mechanics just broke on repetitive playthroughs. The enemies stopped dropping memory shards, and the objects I was supposed to interact with to get bits of the story (and, I presume, a true ending), became just unresponsive, floating bits of geometry. Even the killed enemies tracker broke, which meant I couldn't justify doi9ng more runs to grind for achievements. The game had some promise, but it just didn't live up to it (wonky physics and insta-death falls from platform arenas didn't help, either), and then they had to close up shop and delist it. A shame.

You have an incredible ability where you nail the experience a player will get when actually playing the game. I've seen many reviews, and good ones too, that have inspired me to purchase a game. But the game experience itself turned out to be not what expected from these reviews. Great job........ p.s., for the first time I know exactly how Silverfall will play.
It was former Doctor Who Tom Baker voicing the stranger in Shadows Awakening, not Troy Baker.
Shadows Awakening is pretty good, I might even replay it
Fun and lesser known fact but Shadows Awakening is actually sequel to pretty old and nice RPG Kult: Heretic Kingdoms.
Thanks for this series.
Always happy to see obscure games getting some much needed spotlight
Can't believe warlander was abandoned. I really wanted to play that game.
Im not sure it was abandoned, it seems like its still on steam as some kind of multiplayer game.
just play kingdom of amalur
Love this series, thank you for all the work put into it.
I loved Viking when it came out! I bought it on sale for $20 and had a blast!
In blade of darkness isnt there also a feature that lets you pick up items and dismembered enemy limps and use them as weapons or throwing them?
yes
FUN FACT
Shadows: Awakening (2018) was previously named "Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms : book 1", and then I was waiting for the "book 2" which were to continue your story with your character, I kept saves... And then they merged two "games" into one "shadows: awakening"... save didn't work :(
But the game was fun!
Also: Game were made to consoles with it and the UI were redesigned for consoles... I'm a PC player, it was not enjoyable UI for me :(
Viking: Battle for Asgard is one of my favorite games of all time! 🎉
JUST LOVE this series ❤
Shadows Awakening is a Remake of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms. I remember playing it on launch it had a location that crash the game, so people ocmplained on the forum, they closed that place in a update and deleted all forum mentions of ir, later they relased a dlc with access to that place, they clearly removed the location to sell as a dlc.
i double checked, and the voice guy in Shadows Awakening isn't Troy Baker. it was TOM Baker, also known as the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who. but otherwise good video.
Yea, I misspoke.
I recommend Silver (1999). Unique gameplay, amazing soundtrack, great atmosphere, but a very simple story.
I still remember a review in some gaming magazine from a very long time ago. I think it was fairly positively received and it always looked quite interesting.
Man, Gothic 1 soundtrack... my soul has been torn apart by memories🥲
Hey C4G, here's one really obscure game that I wonder if anyone on this world knows it. Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader.
It was one of my first games ever, so it has a special place in my heart!
Man, that game had so much potential, it's a shame it devolves into a hack'n'slash.
@@Syaniiti My thoughts exactly, if C4G would play this I expected he would rightfully say that. Especially at the late stages, it became a mindless HnS and had already lost its charm
I loved Silverfall, I would invest all points into nature skill tree and unlock the werewolf and slaughter anything in my path😁😎
Bukvalno nikad nisam cuo za sillverfall 🤣
hey @click4gameplay great job, thanks for digging up and bringing all those forgotten / overseen games back to my radar.
Sheeeit, i remember Rune, cool game back then.
I think I played rune on pc
@@billyadrian112 Yeah me too
Never heard of Silverfall but it looks like a combination between Dungeon Siege 2 and the lore of Arcanum, looks pretty interesting!
Granddaddy of soulslikes =/= soulslike, Wolfenstein 3d is the granddaddy of 1st person shooters that doesn't mean every shooter is a Wolfensteinlike.
Check the Wizardry, Might and Magic and Ultima series!
Amazon is the best class
Also give shot to underrated The Last Remnant from Square Enix if u haven't already. It is a must play.
Drakan is an oldie but goldie game you should try.
Drakan the ancients gates was awesome, played it when I was a kid... I broke the game by saving while falling though lol, never played the first one..
btw if you love the precise sword control with chopping off limbs then Revengeance is awesome. Also while we're talking about precise sword control I suggest Die By The Sword (on GOG). I remember if from being a kid, no idea if it's as good as i remember
The voice actor for Shadows Awakening is not Troy Baker, but Tom Baker - a fantastic British actor (The Fourth Doctor of Doctor Who).
Surprise your entire rpg action adventure list did not include the overlord series
Which is a mixture of fable and Pikmin and you play as Sauron and for some reason it is written very Month pythonie
Generally people are either in love with it or find it mediocre would like to see your input
Keep it up!
Bro I love this channel and discovering new forgotten games, keep up the great work 🔥
Also tons of pop culture easter eggs (maybe too many)
Somehow, I had forgotten about Silverfall, thank you for reminding me. GOG, here I come.
Bro you did blade of darkness dirty in this video that's sad at least i am happy alot of people support it
I can recommend Shadow's Awakening. It's a great game. Would NOT say it's Diablo like, though. It is just an RPG. I HATE Silverfall. When you die, all your items are left where you died. If you died because of too many enemies, you have to go back, unarmed, with no armour, and try to get your items back - it's impossible!
You only drop items on hard, iirc.
17:32 it’s Tom Baker not Troy. Tom Baker is famous for playing the forth doctor on doctor who
Get ds4windows if a game doesn't recognize your ps5 controller
blade of darkness is god the father of souls
blade of darkness is goat
honestly, today Silverfall's graphics sorta give me old school MMO vibes like a polished classic Runescape style
Last game has some strong Dungeon Siege Vibes.
loved sudeki... despite the silly dialogue
I think you meant Tom Baker 🙂
Yup, my bad.
Blade of darkness is not obscure. It was a fucking hit
It was a cult hit, it wasn't that popular hence the dev studio shutting down after releasing it.
Yes!
I think you would like Draconus. Cult of the Wyrm for the Sega Dreamcast.
Great action rpg.
You can play through it 3 times.
There is a male Warrior fully voiced and a woman spell caster also fully voiced.
There's is some pretty funny dialog in it too.
Super gaming my brother!!
I may have misunderstood what you said, but the voice of Krenze is Tom Baker (Doctor Who - 4th Doctor) not Troy Baker.
Edit: This is for Shadows Awakening. Probably should have mentioned that. :)
severance
It got lost in the mists of time. Now only Blade of Darkness exists ;)
I remember having the artbook for Viking: Battle for Asgard
The best game mentioned in this video is Gothic 3.
Seriously, though, I think I would like Blade of Darkness if there was a mage class, but it looks like it is all just melee.
Did you play Eye of the Dragon? It is really fun old school RPG, I think you can add that to the list too.
Sir, you should try the: Champion of Norrath series.
( Very similar to baldurs gates)
Oh, I remember Silverfall. It was OK Diabloid, especially considering fact, that there weren't many of them at that time.
For your next video you should try "Gods- lands of infinity"
PLay Fire in The Beastland, an excelent souls like metroidvania
I LOVE Gothic Music, is the Best RPG ive Played all my life!
I would love to see some more crpg representation but yeah i love the series! keep it up♥️
Silverfall looks like "We have World of Warcraft at home".
try rise of the argonauts
Already covered that game in the 2nd episode.
Great video as always.
Neuro Hunter is a curious slavjank FPS\RPG hybrid for you to check out
Die by the sword 1998 would be a good forgotten game,
And I can't believe I forgot about silver fall.
Thanks for the reminder.
7:20 the game Todd was inspiried was he desided to make Skyrim.
Omg Blade of Darkness looks awesome!
Has he covered Dins Legacy/Curse?
No, I don't think so.
I've played a lot of Din's Curse. It's very enjoyable early on, but gets brutal unless you build your character carefully.
Might benefit from a console version.
The Gothic 3 Music in the background 🤩
I would reccommend Winter Ember it is basically isometric Thief in a steampunk setting.
It is not. Seven: Days Long Gone is. Winter Ember is pathetic excuse for a game. Bugs (randomly respawning enemies in a f. stealth game), unclear "puzzles" + very plain and boring story. Yes, I finished it.
Thanks for that, never heard of it before.
The second game Viking: Battle of Asgard sounds like Ubisoft's Vikings valhalla
A shame.
