Hellgate London was so promising and hyped in my "Bubble" but such a letdown back in the days.. Crazy to see it, i remembered the graphics to be pretty good :D
@@Hravokh I was not expecting the PS2 games that were recommended to pop-up here, that was awesome. I loved the aspect of how you are a ruler in Summoner 2. And I loved the uniqueness of the characters, including the assassin hiding in a dangerous battle by not moving. I remember battles later in the game being a gauntlet of fun. I think I liked all the characters. Normally there are characters that would not appeal to my aesthetics, but I enjoyed fighting as them. Having said that... I did not recall that tank at all. I only recall 4 of the characters.
Speaking of Hellgate London -- I vaguely remember game journal back there in my country having an article about the similar premise game, but the Other One had demons being a mix of mechanical and translucent BRIGHT RED ghostly body parts, it promised some very fun gun customisation, but over the years and finding other products to get excited about, this one slowly went into obscurity and I only now remembered "the other Hellgate London"
Yeah, I wish they would remake this gem too and properly incorporate the global stuff into the game. They remade the Hellgate Global online version on Steam as a single player offline game, but they barely made efforts in the adaptation so it's the DX9 lower quality version. I loved this game.
Amusing thing about hellgate london is that it had both 32 & 64 bit versions on the disc but only the 32 bit had any DRM. This means that by simply copying the 64 bit directory onto your hard drive you can start it up and play. Kind of surprising given that EA was the publisher
Sword Coast Legends got bad reviews because of the failure of the dungeon master mode which was touted as a viable replacement for real tabletop D&D. The actual campaign is fine, but a large part of the marketing and hype around the game centered on what was supposed to be a powerful dungeon master mode, but what was given was anything but which made a lot of people mad and thus the poor review scores and negative associations.
And do not forget how the promise was to deliver a modern neverwinter nights experience with custom module editor tools, full d&d 5e rules implemented, and the aforementioned gm mode support. None of which materialized in the end.
About Hellgate London, basically, this game was mentioned to become an MMO, but failed a couple of times, first - with original studio cause of crunches and EA patronage (surprise, surprise), then - with korean, who made Hellgate: Global version, which not last for long as well. HOWEVER, there is still a project of enthusiasts, completely free to play and pretty much stable, with bunch of good tweaks and updates, so if you want to get real HG experience, I would be highly recommended to check out London2038 project. I will be happy to help with all info I know so far. FOH TEH LIVINNNN! :D
I would love to see Creative Assembly make another game like Spartan Total Warrior or Viking Battle for Asgard. They could even do one in the Warhammer IP.
32:34 The ammount of enemies on screen is pretty impressive, what's even more impressive is that their bodies actually stay on the ground once killed - even many modern games strugle with this.
one other thing about Spartan Total Warrior, notice how every single enemy is named, you can see their health bar on the upper right side of the screen and they all have names
Huh, Sword Coast Legends seems fine. The weird license thing has surprisingly occurred with other games and there are some articles warning devs to make sure their IP license contract is solid. For example, the studio BKOM that is making an upcoming Pathfinder ARPG had to remove its past D&D game (Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation). If my memory is correct, Sony lost the right to sell many of the games they made in the past due to IP licenses.
Man what a throwback.... I recently recalled this game Spartan total Warrior and have had an ich to play it again.. I will look for this gamecube emulator. One of the best hack and slash I have played.
On sword cost legends, it did not go well because in marketing it looked like the dnd part (where you can GM games with friends) was rly complex and involved. On release it was barebone and GM coud hardly do anything outside spawning mobs and items. That kinda made everyone hate on it.

Summoner 2 looks so different from the original game. Big part of Summoner 1 was your journey as The Summoner and it was quite memorable, is S2 still a game about summoning cool creatures?
Summoner 2 was a solid title, (played it on Wii using nintendont) - but it lacked two features that made the original Summoner special: random encounters and the chain attack system.
Hellgate London was a great game. I called in sick to work when the servers where going to be shut down. I stayed logged in with several others until they were down. It was grindy and I didn't get a good sniper rifle until that last day.
I loved the scale of the battles of Spartan: Total War. The level that you siege the castle, very late in the game, was my favorite, it was so great for its time.
Summoner 2 was awesome. It was one of my first rpgs that I played. I loved turning into powerful creatures even though there was limited attacks. I also remember getting a game breaking trinket that gave me something like 80x life for the robot character(I forget their name).
Clicked on the video because of Hellgate London. Played it back in the day on release a lot. Setting and combat was very nice for that time and if there was a remake I would instantly get it ❤
Definitely agree regarding Spartan Total Warrior. I played back then on PS2 and loved it. Unfortunately Viking Battle for Asgard was the last game of Creative Assembly for that type of game. Would be awesome to see a Remake of Spartan Total Warrior 😊
I played Summoner 2 back in the day and really liked it. I'd recommend covering the first Summoner game as well actually, they're different enough to warrant looking at both
I remember the awesome trailer for Hellgate London way back when, I never knew that : 1/it had solo play 2/it came back Pitch for number 2 : "Hey, our protagonist is a great warrior that's gonna become a powerful vampire ! - What's his name ? - Jeremy" I wonder if that's the name of one of the devs...
Back when it released I quite liked Hellgate. It looked fantastic, the gameplay was fun, looting was fun. But more then that, two years after playing it and having forgotten all about it me and my sister visted the British Library. Even though hadn't been there before I somehow recognized and knew my way around that place like the back of my hand, it was bizar. At some point it dawned on me that I actually hád been there before, in this Hellgate game. They copied that place perfectly, and even though I never felt like finishing the game I do like it that much better for this experience.
I played blood knights once when I was a child at one of my dads friends house and I have looking for it ever since. I was convinced I dreamt it up at this point so seeing it pop up is insane to me, I've never even seen your channel before.
One of the big reasons for Sword Coast Legends' lack of success is because it was pushed as being a DM vs Player game, similar to NWN, but the devs obstinately refused to add any real depth or complexity to that feature. They insisted they wanted it to be so simple that their small children would be be able to play it, and consequently alienated everyone else. Tabletop style DM/Player interaction was supposed to be the main draw of the game, and it's interesting that this feature was such a failure that you didn't even feel a need to mention it in your review.
I played the absolute hell out of HG: London back in the day. It wasn't good, I'm aware of it but I got hooked on it's jankiness. I put easily 800 hours into it in over the course of a year before I finally put it down and walked away.
You make me want to play Hellgate again ! By the way there is London 2038 for multiplayer but there is also Hellgate revival for having the multiplyer content in solo mode, well not all of it but the majority of items are there. That requires some steps but nothing too hard. I like this game a lot ! IMPORTANT : It's for the original version of 2007. The steam version is basically a port from the version that was a kind of mmo. Has all the content (i think ? Maybe not, idk) but apparently some people encounter a bug with intel processor that freeze the game at 1 fps. Up to you to decide !
I have all these games and all on their original systems rather than emulation. I think I have put most hours in to Sword Coast Legends and Hellgate London. Neither are bad games and there is plenty of enjoyment for crpg and arpg fans respectively.
Played Sword Coast Legends when it came out, thought it was below average and forced myself to finish it as had nothing else to play back then. Also played Hellgate London when it first came out, online only(?), it was a lot of fun to play with my brother. Though the class/skill balance was bad and I don't remember it having respec option, meaning it became extremely repetitive since you had to focus everything to just one main attack with a couple support skills. I remember playing the whole campaign through using pretty much just a single laser/leash type skill with bunch of passives proccing off of it, but I did do insane damage compared to others.
I remember playing spartan total warrior as a kid, man I totally forgot about that game. It was so fun! Side note, Have you ever played drakken the ancient gates? I’m not sure how obscure or popular that game was, but man it stands out in my childhood.
Summoner 2 was my title to play on PS2 emu, it's weird how there was no PC release despite first game getting PC and PS2 version... same studio ten later made Saint's Row1 without PC port while other games got one. S2 had some parts that required either multiple playthrough to try them - or just buy/DL the guide and get the best results. PS2 era was like that. Hellgate London was really promising, there's some version on Steam, but not sure if it's worth touching after all these years? Might as well play Remnants From the Ashes instead.
Spartan total warrior was one of the best ps2 / xbox games released, I was a huge fan of total war games for PC and creative assembly delievered on this for console. Not sure why it got bad "reviews" but IIRC this game released around the time that the gaming industry started going downhill (early 2000s). I really miss the pre DLC / microtransaction / easy era. Praise the sun.
Hellgate London is unique to this day. This should have been the future of Diablo-style games imo. Basically a 3rd person looter shooter that's more RPG and less shooter
I loved Hellgate London at launch. 2.0 was really great. If they hadnt gone bankrupt, the game could have become someting truely amazing. i still prefer it over most modern arpgs tbh
Hey C4G, I would love to see "Lionheart: Legacy of The Crusader" in one of these videos. I remember playing a demo for it and enjoyed it, but never heard anyone ever talk about it. It's a very flawed game with a dubious legacy as Black Isle's last game.
Now I'm wondering, does Spellforce fall under the scope of this series? Also, is Jade Empire well known enough to not fit on one of these lists? Anyway, I'm gonna recommend _The I of the Dragon_ mostly because It's one of the very few games in which yo uplay as a dragon, and I have a deep fondness for it, even If it is... not the best game out there.
Spartan Total Warrior is amazing, goddamn I love that game. I originaly played it on the gamecube, so I can't realy say all that much about the ps2 version (other than the lighting seems a bit off). I kinda wanna check out the OG xbox version, since xemu has been doing great recently, maybe it'll look even better than it did on the gamecube.
@@click4gameplay i *COUGH* *COUGH* just "got" the game and it runs great on the xemu xbox emulator! Seems pretty similar with the gamecube version, but I haven't compared them closely yet.
I'm looking forward to the day when RPG's have role-playing in them. More and more people are starting to understand what it actually is and eventually technology will make coding human interaction and consequence a reality in video games.

I really wish Hellgate london would get a fully funded remake, the lore and world setting has so much potential.

Summoner 2 (well, the first one moreso, but whatever) reminds me of another early PS2 game that received a load of attention in magazines at the time - Drakan: The Ancient's Gate. plz continue with this series,i love it
Summoner 2 is awesome I beat that game like 3-4 times
It's crazy how many games there are that I've never even heard of.
I would like to propose The Technomancer. Its a game from 2016, and it was decent

"Champions of Norrath" Not sure if it's been mentioned before.
Hellgate London was kinda good, i've played it back in school years :D
I still remember the hellgate london hype back in the day, it was a colossal flop whe it came out, but still enjoyed the game for what it was.
I remember playing spartan total warrior as a kid, man I totally forgot about that game. It was so fun!
Side note, Have you ever played drakken the ancient gates? I’m not sure how obscure or popular that game was, but man it stands out in my childhood.
If only gamers of Sword Coast Legends could still get the 1,000s of quest and campaign files that gamers made with the DM option!
Spartan total warrior was such a good game
Samo napred, bravo sine moj
So that's his original language? What is it? Finnish? Another Nordic langage ?
It's a very flawed game with a dubious legacy as Black Isle's last game.
bro spartan total warrior was underrated
Hellgate has a private server and it doesn't take a lot of research to learn this. Other than that - good video
Did he say I'll call you later? Are there phones?😂
I totally forgot that you can play it on the xbox emulator as well. I might try it out for the next playthrough. Truly an amazing game.
@@click4gameplay i *COUGH* *COUGH* just "got" the game and it runs great on the xemu xbox emulator! Seems pretty similar with the gamecube version, but I haven't compared them closely yet.
Sword coast legends deserves more love. It makes me sad that I got delisted.
You should definitely try a game called Soulbringer next. Really underrated if you ask me.
God i still love Sword Coast Legends
I'm looking forward to the day when RPG's have role-playing in them. More and more people are starting to understand what it actually is and eventually technology will make coding human interaction and consequence a reality in video games.
Spartan total warrior is a GEM 💎
London is a gem!!!
