Is Anesthesia Dangerous for Dogs? When is it Worth the Risk? Vlog 103

  • Pet parents often worry their dog or cat is too old for anesthesia. Another concern is if the pet has another medical condition, they should avoid anesthesia completely. This is a huge misconception that prevents many dogs from getting the surgery or procedure they need, like a dental cleaning.
In reality, fatal complications from anesthesia are very rare, regardless of their age or health status. Still, Dr Sue, too, was worried about anesthetizing for her own pet, and put off her dog Matilda’s dentistry and teeth cleaning. In this vlog, she talks about the pros and cons and anesthesia-- especially in senior pets-- including early detection of oral cancer.

Thank you Dr.Sue for referring me to this video. Unfortunately I just saw it now and it appears Diva is worse . Seems to have either gotten totally blind or maybe has some dementia going on. Now with this Covid going on it's hard to take them to the vet because I hear you cannot go in with your dog. Even if you have to put them down . That's heartbreaking. I cannot let my dog get put down alone 😭. I just do not know what to do . Gotta call the vet tomorrow . But thank you stay safe .

This makes me feel better. The vet did blood work on my dog and everything looked good except ALP was slightly elevated she wants to recheck her blood again in 3 months. She did not seem concerned. She had her physical at the same time and she said her heart and lungs sound good. She doesn’t see any reasons to not give her anesthesia. However I am still nervous a bit! But your video helped and I do believe the benefits out weigh the risks.

It disturbs me so much that putting a dog under every year has become normal. Small children also get traumatized by things like stitches and cleanings and nobody would ever THINK of putting them under for something like that because the risk is too great.

Hi! I am not sure if you will see my comment. My dog is almost 10 years old, extremely healthy, but she needs a dental. If I do pre anesthetic bloodwork and X-rays and everything comes back normal, what is the likelihood she will be fine under anesthesia? She has gone under before with no issues, but it scared me as she gets older. Please give me some advise!

I went in on November 26th for routine dental cleaning. They administered the anesthesia and my dog flat lined. They revived her, though they do not know why she flat lined. My dog is very healthy and no issues with any diseases I believe they administered to much anesthesia. Is that possible? And now I have read that her survival rate is low due to her having cardiac arrest. Will my dog be ok. She is 5 years old. She is at a different hospital tonight and they have a ECG to monitor her heart. So far she is up and alert and all blood work normal and blood pressure is now doing good. My dog has had 2 or 3 cleanings before and also had surgery on her knee and she was just spayed and never no issues till yesterday. The Director of the clinic talked with me and they are paying for her monitoring at the other hospital and the Dr. she was upset and crying and felt bad, and told me they gave her less than what they gave her for her spay. I am so confused why this happened. I know it was not on purpose but I think someone messed up. When I got the call I was in shock and really upset. Is my dog going to have the same quality of life?

You have too had way to many dang dental cleanings done for a 5 year old dog unless you are giving her ice cream every day you need to cut WAY back! Al you doing is making the vet rich and giving your dog shiny teeth, if you going to do it wait till they get a LOT of tarter, maybe once every 4 or 5 years or so and give them a few cleaning bones/chews in the meantime, do all the stuff to help keep teh tarter off without putting them under all the time

The vet killed my dog cleaning its teeth by breaking her back while she was under anesthesia. The short version is that she wasn't walking, just dragging her rear end after the dental work, then went into severe seizures leading to her death. X-rays showed the damage to the spine before seizures started.

Sorry Dr. Sue, I disagree with you. What you should have said is that you should brush your dog’s teeth every day and this way, you won’t need to give your dog full anesthesia for a teeth cleaning operation. This is like a dentist telling you, ‘Madam, I will clean your teeth, but the risk of the treatment is the same as an appendectomy.’ Remember, full anesthesia is many times riskier in dogs than in humans, if not hundreds of times.
