My Thinkpad X200 chasis has taken some damage (as well as a USB port and my Thinklight), so in this video, I totally disassemble it and move it to the chasis of a broken (but superficially pristine) model.
I wanted to move my Librebooted motherboard mainly, but also moved by Atheros wifi, RAM cards and everything else into a nearly mint chasis. In the end, it worked out even better than I expected, as the screen I replaced it with ended up being a more recent, much brighter model!

Watched this video 7 years later and I am SO F-ING GLAD IT EXISTS! Damn you made my life so much less of a pain in the... Thanks for the video! Sending a virtual hug from Germany!
"don't lose the screws, obviously"
>loses the screws immediately
I'M SORRY LUKE I FAILED YOU
Put an Asus in that Chaysus.
That used Thinkpad damage makes my heart dropped. At least you fixed it.
The connectors on the WiFi card are for the antennas.
Lol I'm dumb.
Can't be too dumb, I've learn quite a bit from your video!
Well he doesn’t believe in showing what’s in the screen, make a new video of the damned inverter for me
Did IT! The only thing is that my keyboard is a little tilted inward.... like it didn't fit totally the same haha... On the interior - things didn't match completely the same, but I was able to even replace the fan so super happy! Thanks!
looks like an IPS panel. looks good at off angles. need to find one of those
Found a hp Compaq 6510p in the dumpster a few months ago, have bspwm up and running, ram usage on boot Is like 200m.. Gotta say I'm pretty happy with that.
everybody: those cables are antennas
nobody: why are you naked
As an ESD precaution
Did you really missed that the wifi antennas are in the display? :)
Matthias Riegler RIGHT IM FUCKING PISSED
Thank you for your channel! You've saved me from much research on how to update my x200 :) Oh and it's 'cha see' .. not to sound like a grammar nazi (I'm so not) but..sharing is caring. Have a good one. And, thanks again.
real laptops r thicc
EXTRA THICC
Couldn't you just connect the wifi differently so it lits up the correct light?

I hope this question isn't too lame, but I've looked for an answer and cant find one.
Librebooted x200 thinkpads... they're 32x, right?
I kinda want one that way because I multi boot linus USBs. I want to make one for 32x systems (and have a reason to #recursivereasons).
looking good 😊
>all this screwing soothes my autism

Luke Smith kek
That little mPCIe card that you couldn't identify is a 2GB memory cache for HDDs. It supposedly makes HDDs not suck so bad. It isn't necessary for an SSD (obviously).
wewd thanks for the info dude, I was swiping for this comment for ~3min
*"Of course it's indestructible it's thinkpad"*
I glad i purchased one recently, btw is thinkpad x200 core 2 duo uses ddr3 ram? And is it reccomended to put more than 4 gigs in there?
Does this machines has 2 slots for ram?
Yes, 2 slots for ddr3 ram
I know I'm late but yes, x200 supports up to 8 gigs of ddr3 ram. So do t400/w500, and everything newer.
How's your x200 doing?
Wich one is module ram no 1..??
Those grey and black cables connected to the wifi card are co-axial cables and they connect to patch antennas which are attached on your screen bezel. Without those your card wont receive any wifi signal.
>watch video to see how to pull out ram
>offscreen
fml
Toshiya H what video to compare inverter, doesn’t even open the screen bezel
Oh my! The paradox of The Becoming, mentioned in passing. I love it!
Yeah, where does the first Think Pad stop and the second one begin?
Some concepts are by design impossible to truly understand or define, and as a philosopher (by birth, not choice) it drives me fucking insane.
today i am still using my x200 with windows 10 pro 64-bit, 8gb ram, 500gb HDD. and i can believe it still works with photoshop, corel x7, sketchup and camtasia all at the same time, thou my 9-cell battery can only work for 3 hrs now from 7-8 hrs. maybe the memory sucks out more power. i wonder if i can find an ssd in expresscard and test if i can use to boot it up with linux based OS.
What kind of ram did you use exactly to make it work with 8Gb? I just bought Corsair (valueselect) 1066Mhz and it does not even boot in to bios.
@@tamasnovak i bought the same brand of memory that has been installed since i bought the laptop. it was 2gb x 2, now i put 4gb x 2.
hey Luke, what thinkpad would you recommend for under $200? preferably with an i5 and ddr3 ram, (I've got 8gb ram lying around). and the old ibm style keyboard.
Try either the X220 or the T420. Both are among the first to have i5s, and last to have the classic IBM keyboard. Both can take DDR3. The T420 has a DVD drive, the X220 doesn't but is much smaller. I'm pretty sure the X220 is Librebootable (or is about to be), if you care about that.
lol 420. Thanks for the help, i'm interested in Libreboot (what do you mean "about to be"?) but often prefer windows for lazy compatibility with my old lan party games (halo one, age of empires, etc.) and other stuff. What about batteries? Should I just assume its going to suck and buy a replacement? How might I get the thinkpad tools on a new windows (but not linux right?) install?
Minifree/Libreboot are actively working on an exploit to free the X220 motherboard (they say it should be done by the end of the year), so X220 is probably going to be Librebootable soon. The T420 isn't. But yeah I don't think Libreboot will actually load Windows/MacOS, so while your still using Win, you might want to keep your old BIOS. I actually have a T420 that I use when I need to do something with the old BIOS and have contemplated turning it in to a gaming box.
Batteries are hit and miss. Sometimes you'll get a decent battery with a used ThinkPad, sometimes not. You may want to go ahead and get a replacement with as many cell available.
Not sure about how to get ThinkPad Tools though (if you mean the software that comes with a Windows ThinkPad). I can tell you none of it is necessary, even on Windows, but you may be able to check Lenovo's site if you really want them.
Do you think a x220 without HDD or Battery but with the dock for $85 is a good deal? I've found new batteries for under and around $15, and I've got old HDDs kicking around with the prospect of an ssd when I find a capacity for a price I like. ( i know the tools aren't necessary but I've heard good things and i'm always a sucker for convenience.)
Yeah that's pretty great price if it's in decent condition.
To avoid stripping screw heads use a JIS (Japan Industry Standard) screwdriver, not a Philips one. Philips is designed to slip off the head at a certain torque point, JIS has straight blades that won't slip easily. Look closely at the screw head, if the cros is sharp and straight it's a JIS; smoothed angled borders at the center of the cros, then it's a Philips.
about the rice, is that awesome wm, because it looks like powerarrow-dark
It's i3 with bumblebee-status. It does look similar though.
"chases"...u mean chasis as in shasie?
17:29 Varg?
Is that She playing? Good taste bro
Does this laptop has 2 slots for ram?
Yes.
Is that SanDisk SSD something you'd recommend?
I have no particular brand loyalty to SanDisk (it just happened to be the best priced), but I certainly do recommend using a SSD generally. It does make a *huge* difference in all basic performance. It's a much more sizeable effect than say a RAM upgrade or a better processor tbh.
It doesn't really matter.
AFAIK the x200 comes with SATA-I with a max. of 150MB/s. About all SATA SSD's are much faster than that, more like 250-550 MB/s (SATA-III goes up to 600 MB/s), so you will not get the maximum speed out of your SSD anyway. They are faster than most HDD's though and no more problems with fragmentation. Even your battery will last longer and you won't hear an SSD spinning. I would buy the cheapest one available.
While you are at it, you could also buy an Express Card with 2x or 3x USB3.0 ports, because the x200 only has USB2, but it does have an Express Card slot. They only cost about 10 US$. Make sure to buy one that does not stick out.
luke! nice waterfall
"fucking pathetic" hahahaha killed me! great job bro!
Please someone knows The name of the motherboard??? I need the driver for install windows 7 in my x200 pleaseeeeee
E.R.J. MUSIC should be on the Lenovo web site. MB is custom for the system.
John Bloodworth you know what kind of driver is for install a new windows and help it to recognize the HDD? Sorry for my bad english :)
E.R.J. MUSIC let we look it up. We were a Lenovo shop at my last job however normally they just worked. These things are total workhorses may not get it looked up tonight worst case you will need to get the chipset driver directly from Intel
John Bloodworth there are so many type of chipset intel and i dont know what chipset i need to install windows 7 in my HDD
E.R.J. MUSIC I will track it down. About time for me to call it a night
@13:53 does anyone know?
Anybody have an internal wifi card that works well for linux? Looking for one for my x220, but don't want a usb adapter.
Alexander Gonser the x220 WiFi cards work well with linux.
Hans Kinki yes but not with a distro like Porabola that bocks proprietary software (ie drivers).
Alexander Gonser wiki.parabola.nu/Wireless_Setup#Discover_if_the_card_is_supported
Take one of the list.. there's many that work and fits your needs and budget. There's no whitelist on coreboot u can chose freely.
If not using coreboot use the intel blob..even if u are..t's just that and core boot has them blobs too.
Hi, what battery are you using?
The standard 9 cell battery you can get for the x200.
after that many years?? I have a X201 with almost dead battery. And I am looking for replacement.
Oh no, I just bought a new one on eBay last year. They still make them new, I'd assume for the x201 too...
Every time I tried opeining any laptop battery my bench ended up covered in blood and plastic splinters.
I want to practise a bit more on CPU swaps, screen swaps, keyboard changes, wash and glue before I restore an entire Thinkpad with a body transplant.
Well i know the video is a little old but, my thinkpad won't start anymore 😅 someone had the same problem or can help me. I just open for clear the fan...
At the very moment you said "don't loose the screws of course" one of mine fell on the ground...
Found it
How much maximum ram can a X200 take?
8GB, I believe, which is what I have now.
Luke Smith I'm assuming that depends on your CPU. My X200 won't accept more than 4gb.
I'm pretty sure that limitation only applies to 32bit OSes. I'm not sure, but I think all X200's can take 64bit OSes so they needn't abide by that. (Not sure though.)
Luke Smith I'm going to do some research now. Thanks!
32-bit OSes can only address 4GB (2^32 bytes) of memory, but often less due to reservation of specific addresses. Windows 32-bit can only address about 3.5 GB of RAM. The maximum of RAM is dependent on the architecture of your mainboard. According to Lenovo it is 4GB max for the early versions of the x200. Maybe later models can access more RAM. You should just test or otherwise find out the exact revision of the mainboard.
I got you reference about the theseus ship and Im an okay read millenial sooooooo.

Chassis is pronounced /ˈʃæsi/
Its not pronounced 'chases', its 'chassy'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chassis "A car has a chassis." thank you for the video. i don't wanna make you feel bad, but it hurts my ears to hear it mispronounced twenty times.
hahahaha graphics card xDDDDDD
this is bullshit a total tear down would of shown me the inverter I’m pissed wasted mad time
