I owe a lot to dirt cheap smartphones. A cheap smart phone helped my get my life back on track after I left my 12 year job at McDonald's in 2016 and got caught up in temp agency jobs and was evicted from my apartment with a baby on the way. $9.25 an hour working a kitchen, living in a 600 sq ft apartment to my grandparents basement with an aging car to $30 an hour, sitting on a forklift all day, back in my own place with my son and more things considered a luxuries than I ever had growing up. Learning to be independent again after everything fell apart all started with a $20 TracFone ZTE Citrine. I used a Motorola G 5G 2022 model for a couple years. Good phone.
Good for you, life is hard and you fought to get it back on track for you and your family👍
Thank you for sharing this story. So sweet to read this. I wish you and all those you care for a lifetime of good fortune and happiness!
Good for you man 😊❤
I'm happy for you man
$30 an hour is an AMAZING SALARY! Software engineers get that much in the UK!
thank you for not crapping on these phones like other youtubers. I don't own any of these but they're made for people who cant afford the top of the line brands. I find it really disrespectable when other youtubers shit on them and call them slow, like yeah dude its 25 bucks what did you except?
As a person who lives in a 3rd world country I agree, lots of western tech youtubers are always talk shit about something that is not the latest or top of the lines
@@danielhandika8767 exactly! it really shows their privilege... I'm glad these phones exist even if they aren't the best. for me personally if a phone can at least run youtube its good enough for me haha

fun fact: the Moto G Go technically doesn't exist. it's just a carrier brand-name for the Moto G Pure, a phone which was released in *2021*.

@johnzoid74 that's pretty much how the cricket version of the g7 power is labeled as the "g7 supra" this seems to be motorola exclusive.
I became a proud owner of a Moto G24 8GB/128 GB Matte Charcoal two days ago... Paid it €119... moved in my SIM card and my SD Card

Nice little thing to know with most of these kinds of smartphones:
It's possible to prevent the phone from installing random apps without your consent by disabling "Mobile services manager" (sometimes also called "DT Ignite") in the apps list under settings. Sometimes it's under "system apps" so look there if you don't see it. You may also force disable it using ADB but I haven't had to do that.
delete the apps
@@Clotix6114 They usually return after a while.
Using ADB to debloat stuff works like a charm. Just be careful though, make sure the app won't cause any bootloop (Especially true to Xiaomi phones on stock MIUI/HyperOS)

A couple years ago I was forced to buy an AT&T Moto g play from the Dollar General. My iPhone screen stopped working and I didn’t have no insurance on my contract phone so I bought it popped in my sim and rocked it for six months until my upgrade was available. It was a very decent phone.
Heads up: family dollar isn’t technically a dollar store. It’s a discount grocery/retailer.
I had a period after divorce where I was broke. Well, not broke, but buying a flagship phone was out of the question.
I used a Moto G for two years. It was just fine. Played Spotify and UA-cam in my car for music. Podcast apps worked well. The photos were ok.
I paid $80 for mine. It was a good phone.
I think you should be able to flash a unlocked version of the factory firmware on these phones. Here in estern Europe it used to be common practice to buy carrier locked phones, flash non locked firmware and sell them for a profit.
nope, bootloader codes for these are held hostage by the greedy corps. and the ROM can't change the sim lock.

I bought this for around $105 brand new and for its price, it is definitely worth using as a work/2FA phone. Dual 5G SIM support, decent battery life, NFC, good enough camera system, fast charging~
Three of my family members are using Motorola 5g stylus. My brother and I use one plus Nord N100 and Nokia X100. I had Samsung j3 6, LG k30, Samsung s8, LG Stylo 6, LG K30, Nokia X100, OnePlus Nord N100, Nord n200, and my daily is Nord N100.
Yeah I went to my memory library.
You are so lucky in USA. I wish we had a family dollar companies with cheap smartphones
The fact that the US still has carrier lock is ridiculous
these phones are subsidized that's why, the unlocked ones cost more.
We can buy unlocked phones, but we can also get them cheaper for locked phones that unlock after a few years
Only on cheap garbage like this
@@Seawolf.Gamingall of the Verizon branded phones he got are unlocked after 2 months. It's a deal Verizon made last year i think. Visible, straight talk, total Tracfone etc. Any prepaid and MVNOs on Verizon network unlock after 2 months. That's why I've been stacking on those free Motorola phones on straight talk 2 months now. Total wireless galaxy a54 or Moto g stylus 2024 for 50 Bucks is the deal.
This is going to be a thing of the past hopefully soon if this bill passes If you buy the phone out right and it's locked to a network it's supposed to unlock now after 60 days obviously if you're paying on a phone that's a different story. We can buy unlocked phones though if you buy directly from the company or you we can buy unlocked phones though if you buy directly from the company for example if I buy a Samsung phone from Samsung it's unlocked but you usually get cheaper if you go through a carrier so you win some and lose some. i have that moto g play! i paid 40$ for mine at walmart! its the straight talk one, but you can literally put any of the tracfone sims in any of the tracfone branded phones it dont matter which carrier as long as its tracfone owned you can just put ur tracfone sim in any of them! this is how i got safelink wireless on a straight talk phone! i bought the straight talk one as it was 10$ cheaper than the total wireless or the tracfone varient of the same phone!
My mom used to main the lower spec family dollar cell phones (and similar prepaid ones) up until early 2023 when she switched to an iPhone 13 through the internet provider we use - she said the androids were quite slow after using an iPhone and she’d never go back. Great times ❤
You’re talking about slow, cheap android phones. Apple is a flagship device. Try using a mid range or flagship android and you won’t find the issues that a slow and cheap android will have

Motorola phones are outstanding value and still have headphone jacks and memory card slots.
They also have an almost bare Android install which means snappy response, no factory spamware and early SW updates 👍
I'm in Australia using a Motorola G62 on a US $10/month plan with 10Gb data and unlimited calls/text.
Verizon locking the phone SW is illegal in many countries now.
Soiled diaper is par for the course
What I do to activate Verizon phones is I have a few old activated Verizon SIM cards and when I put them in it activates the phone
brilliant
Old activated sim cards? Sooo you're still paying for their services then?
No what I mean by old activated SIM cards is they was already activated when they had service on them a while back and when you pop it in the new phone it will automatically setup the phone without you needing service to use the phone and the WiFi cause the new SIM card in the phone isn’t activated and Verizon won’t let you use the phone without a activate SIM card
@@scottdunn4506that's nice to know I bought a TCL 30 Z from Walmart with the carrier being total wireless it has a sim card without service and i used it to skip the activation screen on a locked TracFone Motorola phone
Moto G23 user here, have been very satified with their phones for 2 years now.
There's a tendency for weird things to happen at local dollar stores... Some folks don't like average Americans getting good deals. Boost mobile has a $60 unlimited plan with the newest iPhone every year. I really like the newest flagship rugged phones with like 20000 mAh + 32GB ram and other fun features for less than $600.
The problem is that many people can't sing up with a carrier and have to opt for these options. Yes, you can get better value elsewhere, but that's out the windows for some folk that live with very limited incomes. I remember running one of these phones with a 10 bucks prepaid card each month because that was all I could afford.
Boost is good till you want to use any good amount of data
@@imwastedhere I'm in australia, whats wrong with $10 a month,curious.
@EmeraldHill-vo1cs there was nothing wrong. To be honest, it was alright. I only got like 1gb of internet and 5 hours of call time which was enough to get around school
@@imwastedhere Ah, see here for $10 ya get unlimited calls and text and a couple of gigs, for a month. Or 28 days.
I buy these often enough. I do wardriving. So, they provide cheap phones to use as wardriving tends to burn out the internal flash storage and WiFi chips. I use three phones when I wardrive to get the best catch rate.
I replace the phones roughly every six months. I never activate them.
I've never ran into a problem being able to use them on WiFi.
wardriving? i've never heard of it. i'm sure it isn't driving military vehicles
@@gabesmath105 : It's where I drive around and scan / record all the WiFi, Bluetooth and Cell tower locations, names and serial numbers.
This is done for research and amusement.
The end goals include the following.
1. What types of hardware are currently being used.
2. To find out what types of encryption are actively being used.
3. To map out WiFi networks using geolocation (this helps improve mapping software).
4. To map out cell coverage.
@@gabesmath105well back in the early 2000s it was definitely about who had wifi and could you connect to it
i generally associate wardriving as a malicious prospect as many people do that to commit cyberattacks on insecure or open wifi networks but i never thought of it from your point of view. I was thinking is my guy admitting to a crime lmao. And then i read your reply. cheers mate
I Currently use a Motorola Edge+ 5G (2023)... Also, there is a way to bypass the activation screens... Its really weird but you tape the 4 corners of the phone in a certain pattern and it lets you past.
I bought a prepaid vzw phone awhile back as a google maps mule/backup phone, all it took to get past the setup lock was popping my sim in from my postpaid line and all was well.
The bulk of it's use was to save me burning google maps into my s21U screen.
I have been a Tracfone user for 20 years. They use Verizon towers and i always have good cell phone coverage. I have had 5 different types of phones from different manufacturers but all were Tracfones. The Moto one was pretty good but Samsung is the best one so far. My plan costs me about $22 a month with unlimited text and calling and 2 Gig of data usage. I usually order from HSN as they have some good bundles and usually unlimited text and calling. I still have to buy a new plan every month to keep my phone #. Every time I upgrade from one phone to the next model it seems to go up in price about $50 for the purchase but the new features seem worth it and the phone lasts me about 3 years at least. They never break and my last Samsung Galaxy A50 cost me $150 and to upgrade to the next one will cost me a little over $200. These new faster ARM processors keep getting better and faster every generation. I'm totally satisfied with Tracfone. Tracfone carries some Iphones but I won't pay the extra money for that cult company.
I used to love Tracfone, but when I had it they were using AT&T towers. I wonder if they use both now or if they totally changed to Verizon? Back then if you had a regular AT&T plan and you broke your contract phone, you could buy one of these cheap ones and simply put your sim card in it and carry on. Can't do that anymore because I guess they figured out that consumers were actually saving money that way.
It's possible that Tracfone uses different service providers in different parts of the country. When I moved from the West coast to the East coast I had to get a new Sim card from Tracfone but the transition was otherwise transparent. I did change my phone number to an East coast Area code and number. Didn't have to change phones.
Motorolla user here! Been using them for about 4-5 years now, and won't use anything else! They have some really good ones, and some average ones - the one you got for $75 is honestly a really good phone at a good price! At this point, I use the Moto ThinkPHone (top end in thier line), but I like them - good value for what you get!
4:40 sells well most likely because you don't have to pay to use it. I have one about 15 minutes from me. Going today or tomorrow for craps and giggles.
nice! careful for diapers lol
I got my first smart phone from a kroger or something lmao. It was like 5-25 dollars with minutes from zte if i'm remembering right. Still have it sitting in a box somewhere.
Now all this time later im using the last good moto g stylus aka the 2021 before they started slowly downgrading the specs while raising the prices.
I use three phones. One is my regular phone for outside usage. Second one a trade in from T-Mobile I use as back up double logged into everything, and use it as a tv via Samsung dex to watch TV news and shows. Third phone I turned it into an emulator, has all of them
I've only owned "dirt cheap" smart phones my entire life. And I'm an software engineer/app developer. My phone now is the moto g 5g I got for $40 on HSN and it does everything i need. Half the trick to accumulating "wealth" is not spending your money on over priced stuff thats more than you need. I'd rather retire at 48 than drive an expensive new car.
Can you enable usb debugging on these devices? If yes, cant you easily delete the apps through adb/put a custom rom on it?
I was thinking the same thing! I'm sure theses a way to get a custom rom and get wifi without paying.
Most of them wont support custom roms because most of these phones come with some sort of crappy unisoc chipset
I've been using a Moto G Stylus 5G 2024 for a few months now and I absolutely love it. I was using the 2021 model until the camera crapped out and not even replacing the camera sensor itself fixed it, which I took as a sign to just get a new phone lol. The 2024 version is amazing for $400 with 8gb of LPDDR5, 256gb of storage, 1080p 120hz P-OLED screen, 3.5mm jack, sd card slot, astounding battery life. Genuinely the only thing I see to complain about is the short software support although that isn't a problem for me (I was using a Note 4 until 2021).

duuuuuude lol, yesterday i bought a cheap ZTE Blade L9 to act as a simple music player while am on the train, what do you think about that phone ?
I bought an LG G8 for $40 for music, but then I took my mother's iPod haha. The G8 was good but once I transferred my music the carefully organised music folder I had would be ruined. I hate LG's file system.
The moto g go is my camping/back up phone. I have premium, so I download a fair amount of videos, and the battery life is just insane. Phone is smooth enough, sound and camera are enough for day-to-day use, definitely recommend. Only issue I've actually had was apps closing out during some serious doomscrolling. Probably my fault, or the sign I needed to put it down.
For the price, it's good to grab 2 of them for a mishap on your main. Also, if you see this, give it a full charge and just leave it, I think mine made it 9 days.
The g play is decent, I rocked it a few months while I was struggling, pretty similar to the go, as just an emergency backup phone, it's not enough of a difference for paying almost double.
I found my people. The mediatek hate is strong for me too lol
My wife and I both use Motorola 5G Stylus phones. We travel a lot overseas and these are just about the cheapest, non-junk phones we can buy unlocked in the US. They work well, have decent cameras, and don't attract the attention of thieves. Even if they were to be stolen, we would only be out less than $200 for each phone, which is an easier hit to deal with than a $1000+ iPhone or high-end Samsung.
Remember!

You can always get a new buddy, but you can not get a new body.
I've only ever had a Tracfone. Years ago, Kmart had a sale and a got a flip phone. I haven't switched networks because I don't want a monthly bill. I now have a smartphone but with rollover I still don't use it enough to justify a monthly bill. I buy a three month card and run out of months before I run out of minutes. That said, I liked the company service better before Verizon bought it.

If you want to try them with wi-fi only, try doing a factory reset and then set up the phones without installing any SIMs in them. Also due to new FCC reg, you can get the phone unlocked after 60 days, cancel the initial plan, and change carriers. If a phone has an older version of Android, it most likely has an old image installed and will need updates of the Google, Chrome and Play Store apps, before you can do anything else and not have issues.

i could bypass both of those phones' scumbag restrictions pretty easily with a connection to a windows machine
Damn. Glad I live in Australia where there's none of that carrier lock crap anymore
It's such bs. I managed a Cricket Wireless for a few years and first of all the companies just put more and more pincodes and hurdles for the customers switching services. Secondly it leads to fraud because people literally sell available numbers online that then stores use to give switcher deals to folks who would normally just be a new line and not qualify for the switcher deals on phones. If none of that made sense, good, your brain is working fine.
@RemoWilliams1227 Meanwhile if I don't have a plan that includes a phone, I just contact my old provider to transfer my old number to my new provider and I'm good.
Or just cancel my old plan online and get a new one if I don't care about the number.
Or if I have a plan with a phone included, I pay the phone off, then can just cancel the data plan and put a sim from a different provider in that same phone with no fuss

3:00 you should blur this out
My uncle got me a Motorola G5S+ back in 2018 and it still works, the battery backup is terrible and it lasts about 2-3 hours without being plugged in. Now I just use it as a desk clock.
WAKE UP NEW JOHNZOID UPLOAD
Edit: With the locked moto g try flashing stock firmware onto it
Just got Moto G 54 Power Edition and so far, I am quite happy with it. There are few details I could live without, but what phone is perfect, right? But with 12 GB RAM and pretty decent processor (albeit Mediatek, but whatever) it runs pretty well. Display is also nice, for IPS panel and even in these sunny summer days I had no issue seeing what's on screen. But the best part of this phone is battery. I have the phone from Thursday. Now, we have Tuesday and it only was three times on the charger so far and that's counting fully charging it after purchase. My old phone needed charging every single night. What a change now.
And none of them are a dollar what a scam
Hello! I'm the proud owner of a moto g stylus 5G (2022) smartphone that I have owned since 2023. It gets the job done without having me sacrifice functionality for the price. Bonus fact: as someone who used to sell these prepaid phones through stores like Metro by T-Mobile and Cricket Wireless, I can verify that the insanly low price for these phones are done what's the expectation that you're going to buy service to go with it. Some people get burner phones from the dollar store, while most of the dealers I've sold phones to where buying iPhone SEs and iPhone 11s.
Why your carriers want to track you and how this isn't condemned by the law
I have the same Moto G but for AT&T and got it today from Walmart for $56. I also have an edge and a moto g stylus. At 1st I didn't think I would like the Motorola phones, but they are fine. To get the most out of the phones, you need to go in and set them up and maximize the settings. Make sure the highest refresh rate is set to always on. Go in and maximize the ram setting. Once you go through these phones you will be surprised how you don't miss the others. I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra as my work phone. Yes, you can tell the difference, but if you are going in and knowing what you are buying, there will not be buyer's remorse and you want be comparing these phones to a premium level phone and you will be happy with the money you saved.
Also, each one of these phones, I got for AT&T and one for Verizon, I used as a post-paid phone and not as pre-paid.
Regarding Motorola phones you can flash RETUS version of the stock ROM for their respective models and you skip all the spam and Amazon subsidize junk that come with the prepaid carrier version. Me personally running a Moto G Power 2021 from Boost Mobile. The downside of Motorola is that they stop upgrading the stock firmware the second year after the launch which mean I am running Android 11 with an actualization from last year and prone to any security bug discovered since till now.
I'm a loyal Moto user! I got a Moto Edge 2023 a couple months ago at Best Buy for $370. It's the most expensive phone I've ever owned. It works great. I find it amazing you can essentially get a "pocket tablet" (inactivated phone) for 25 bucks, running the latest version of android and its not sluggish.
Awoo :3
My old phone was a Moto G6, it was a cheap phone that was also effectively and hand-me-down from family. It was actually fairly good and lasted me a couple years through High School before I saved up enough money to buy my own - a OnePlus 9 that I still use as my main phone and intend to use for the next several years. The Moto G6, on the other hand, has become quite slow and unstable, as you would expect from a 5-year-old phone that likely sold for ~$150 when it was new.
The Moto G is perfect for backup and emergency phones. Have one in a drawer and in your car and just use them in emergencies. Or for phones you give to school kids to just call and use internet while not worrying about it getting stolen.
Honestly, these cheap phones are WAY better than what I started off with, my first smartphone was a $40 ZTE Maven 3 and was nowhere near the level of the equivalent new phones for that price range these days, they might suck compared to flagships but they're way better than what you could get a few years ago
Comparing these to the burner goPhones from grocery stores a decade before, it’s pretty impressive how even the flip phone (which was the only without a touchscreen) runs a barebones Android imitation of what those Blackberry lookalikes would’ve ran. Least the camera looks more like an iPhone 5 than a 3GS in 3gp quality
idk why old and cheap phones interest me so much but im glad ur here to scratch that itch, great videos
Motorola fan here with Moto G31
Using it for more than 1 year
With key feature being Amoled screen under $150
If that's right what I found, the Verizon lock is only active for 60 days after purchase, after that it should automatically unlock and you can use whatever SIM card/carrier you want, however you need an active subscription/plan or prepaid at Verizon for these two months/billing periods, after that you can cancel it and swap out the SIM.
If I remember that correctly the Nokia phones (by HMD Global) were among the most aggressive in killing background apps to improve battery life, which isn't always a good thing, you can miss some notifications or get them too late because they don't refresh very often.
And they're now abandoning that Nokia brand, seemingly because they were on the rather pricey side (the XR21 retailed for 599 bucks and it had 5G, 120 Hz screen refresh rate but the SoC was a SD695, a little weak for such high price, I'd rather expect a Snapdragon 7 series) and apparently broke their update promise.
I have that same Moto G 5G that I got on sale from Boost for $10. I'm shocked by how good it is, and just like yours, mine wasn't stuffed full of useless apps that chew up most of the small 64 GB storage space. Very pleasantly surprised! Motorola did well with this one.
I use a Moto G 5G 2024 as a secondary (the first one), and it's actually not bad to be honest, it has a snapdragon and a half-decent camera. It's a bit sluggish when multi tasking, and has Android 14. But overall it's good deal for the price. It has an esim too which is surprising.
Which is weird that my $800 Motorola Edge plus 2022 does not have for some reason.
That last flip-phone likely has more horsepower than some Motorola phone (that had the "new" Bluetooth tech) that I paid more than $400 for in the early 2000's. God, now I feel old.
lol that’s too funny 😂 I wish it had a proper play store but it doesn’t, totally ok tho. Not a Cat S22 Flip type phone
Now garage now
