I've been ThinkPad pilled for about a year now thanks to Mr. Smith. I have a W510 and X201. I'm a little upset at the fact normies push the market towards that sleek design since it is more fragile and inherently more difficult to repair and replace parts. Companies like that since normies will just buy a new laptop or phone or whatever when something needs to be fixed. Ideally it should be robust and modular without having some kind of major firmware difficulty. Great video, Luke!

It annoys me that new laptops have too large flexing track pad without dedicated buttons, even worse when there is zero tactile feedback on borders. And it's unstably slow even on highest sensitivity. Never got used to Track-point since it wasn't much of a thing anymore - it's tricky to be precise and quick.

Wifi drivers were always a problem on Linux. It was even a meme back around 2000 on Slackware, when spending days to get it working was just the natural state of things. There's a reason we had projects like NDISwrapper to run Windows drivers on GNU/Linux. It even worked most of the time!
In addition to that it doesn't help that the linux ABI is constantly in development. A simple update from kernel 4.16 to 4.17 can make your wifi stop working. There's a lot to say about Windows, but their compatibility and slow-changing API's are a big reason they have the big market share and Linux doesn't.
The only reason old Thinkpads work so well with Linux is just because they're, well, old. And a lot of developers use these laptops of course.
Also, "Using linux with UEFI is such a pain", is that not partly to blame on boomer-y linux devs too? We're also not booting in real mode anymore.

I mean in the sense of them being very easily reparable, parts being easily replaceable and laptops being upgradable.
Of course without need to have the motherboard exposed in order to acces hard drive or whatever.
I ask because it is going to be more and more difficult to get parts to fix them as time goes on. Even if you are very careful with your thinkpad, eventually we are going to run out of old second or third hand thinkpads to use.

Only the ThinkPad T480 does. It's like a Framework 13, but 4-5x cheaper. I honestly don't know why people would buy a Framework 13 (especially the 11th gen Intel model) when T480 exists.
T480 is the newest proper, authentic ThinkPad, and it's the only proper ThinkPad to be officially and fully supported by Windows 11. It's a lot more future-proofed than even the T470p, let alone the T470.

You're really complaining about old computers versus new computers. As someone who actually has to service computers constantly, I strongly prefer the single-plate design over the old way. Static is also not an issue with any computer from the past 20 years because CMOS chips are designed with protective circuitry. You'd have to be throwing some big sparks.

I was stupid enough to buy a Probook 450 G5 a few years back and it's been nothing but trouble. So far it's still alive somehow, despite the HP cooling solution being complete crap for the i7 in it. Anything even moderately CPU intensive - extracting files, "light" gaming, multiple browser tabs means the CPU is gonna run at 100 degrees celcius. Pulling it apart to put more RAM in, swapping the M.2 drive is fine and the 2.5" drive is surprisingly easy to get to, but the drive bay is so poorly designed that the 2.5" drive rattles about without being properly taped down and on several occasions I've had it disconnect because it's slipped out of it's slot. An attempt to sort out the overheating basically led me to pulling everything to bits, the case had to be split into three basically: the keyboard, the frame and the underside panel with the motherboard attached. Motherboard had to be *removed* from the underside panel, which required one of those annoyingly small Torx screwdrivers, alongside the battery to get to the heatpipes and the like and pulling this apparatus off led me to find basically no thermal paste on the CPU. It wasn't even that it was baked onto the CPU like you would see after a few years of use, it was non-existent. I compare this experience to the time I pulled apart a friend's 2012 Lenovo Thinkpad to reapply thermal paste - relatively quick and painless and I managed it while drunk.
UEFI and secureboot has basically corrupted one install of Kubuntu when I had to sort out the shoddy Nvidia Optimus supprt (when I was toying around with it).
I'm fortunate in some ways with this HP laptop, my previous Pavillion I broke when having to take it apart to replace a faulty 2.5" HDD, the ribbon cable for the power button was torn off during installation because in an effort to be "sleek" they completely threw away decent design principles. Ultimately I've had enough of HP garbage, it never used to be like this, laptops were actually quite simple to pull apart - I can remember being 10 or so pulling apart older HP laptops without any real issues.
20 year old zoomer rant tldr; modern laptops are terrible. It's not even a matter of ergonomics, it isn't hard to design an easy to pull apart ultrabook with a decent cooling solution, it's just the idiots at HP (and other brands I am sure) are completely incapable of creative solutions. Either that or they do so on purpose for planned obsolence and to deter people from fixing their own computers.
