    I screenshot the first image and counted quickly. 9 blocks across by 9 blocks down. 40 total 9 patch and 40 total hour glass. Make 40x3 pairs of 2.5" blocks. Then put the third block on in whichever direction you need it to make an interesting color choice. Or sew the long strips together and cut the short strip. I haven't tried it yet but it long strip yields 4 pairs from 25 patterned blocks so that's 100 pairs of the 120 you need total.

    I have made sooooo many of your quilts. 3 yrs. ago I made the four fence rail and four patch(?) And it was ho hum! But I kept at it and now I'm making them soooo much better. Like ya said it's a learning thing. Love this quilt as usual. I'm making my second cascade quilt cuz everyone loved it soooo much. I used ocean batiks W/white. So I bought some more batiks, ocean colors for my sister ho lives on Swans Island, ME. She's also getting a finally finished quilt, the bordered Periwinkle with Fresh Lilacs. Came out beautiful. Thank-You so much Jenny. I love you to the moon and back! So much done over the last few years and I also call it, as Angela Walters calls it, quilting is my therapy. I suffer from an anxiety disorder(thanks to my mom) and find this so comforting, plus I love giving them away to family. I'm the 11th out of 13. 58 yrs. old so I have a gazillion nephews and nieces, and great nephews and nieces, and they just keep coming, OYE VEY!!! lol

    I am soooooo happy I decided to look for a video for this pattern! I was using a pattern in a from a Jelly Roll book. I’m using red and white prints that I purchased from various places. The pattern in the book is done making strip sets. I was looking for a video from you to see if there was a better way because I was not liking the way my quilt was going to end up looking like. If I continued to use the pattern in the book. I love the way the hourglass blocks are done. Super easy! And I’m loving the scrappy look. Need to find that ruler you are using.

    gotta be an easier way to do the 2.5'" squares--love this Jenny you and your team are amazing so is Rob

    • @latitude1904
      @latitude1904 4 роки тому

      There is an easier way. She mentioned it, but didn't show it. That would be chain-piecing a dark to a light 2.5" square. Once you're done, attach a dark to 2 in a row, then a light to the third one. That way, you'll have two outers to every inner set. Example: 1) dark-light-dark 2) dark-light-dark 3) light-dark-light. Clear as mud? Some things are harder to describe than to show...

    • @suefliss7210
      @suefliss7210 2 роки тому

      @@latitude1904 Cut your white strips the same lengths as your print strips. Sew one white strip on to each side of a print strip for your centers, and one print trip on each side of a white strip for your ends, and then cut into 21/2" sections. Not quite the variety, but much faster and easier. And since your strips are not full jelly roll length, you won't get that many of one set anyway.

    What if you took the first 2.5" cut and sew that together. Then only cut the 2.5" squares off the shorter strips. Because you need more of the 2 sets and could flip them whichever way you need them. I'm not a big fan of sewing 2.5" sq together. You know I'm going to get them wonky!

      I agree, that would work! Since the print is only sewn to the background in the 10" length, there is no issue with the scrappy effect. And we limit the little 2.5" squares we have to sew together. :)

    Could you sew the 2 1/2 inch strips together in sets of 3 (background/print/background and print/background/print) and then sub-cut those into 2 1/2 strips and sew 3 of those together for the 9 patch? Does the math work? I think it does. But I'd love to hear for sure from someone way more experience than I am.

  • @AmandaWoods-kk9vu

    I am confused by the numbers. If I have 22 background squares why do I need 25 layer cake squares?

  • @tracystrobel1065
    @tracystrobel1065 5 років тому

    Ok now im confused. Usually you give the number of blocks across and down and this time you didnt. Then the instructions say use 25 blocks of the layer cake but only 22 background. So when do you use the 3 extra and how? I got into a rhythm of cutting the 2 strips off and drawing the line to make my hourglass block and have 50 but now i dont have enough square to make the amount of 9 patch blocks. Were we to cut the extra 3 10 inch squares up for them. Ive watched the tutorial 3 times and read the transcript and no where did it say what to do with the extra layer cake squares.

    When using the clear ruler for the hourglass and your cut to 6.5, does it open to 6"? Because the pattern shows to cut the 9 patch to 6" squared. If the hour glass is 6.5 they dont line up. Thank you for this lovely tutorial and quilt, I'm making it for my daughter but stuck on the correct size, I dont have that special ruler.

      Cindy Romero 6.5 is your unfinished size on both. 6 inch should be your finished size. When you sew a 9 patch from 2.5inch squares, you get 6.5. So make both squares 6.5. If the pattern says 6 ignore it. That would throw everything off.

      @@courtneyblock6795 thanks for confirming this Courtney. I'm making this now and about to start "squaring" and it suddenly jumped at me...the quoted sizes (in Block Magazine) are wrong! Luckily I followed the rule of check twice before you cut.

    Nice quilt. Pretty sure you could use your quick hour glass method too.

    any way to get written instructions instead of trying to do it from a video? all I see in the pdf is the supply list- I would rather not use up my internet minutes by following a video step by step= thanks!

      The 3 dots at the top of the video allow you to change the speed of the video! You can slow it down if you want to, then there’s always pause & rewind which I Always use haha 😂. She wants you to be successful, so use all the tools available!!

      Delepha Agee several ways to fix that. First make sure that you iron your fabric before you cut it. Second make sure your cuts are very accurate and third make sure you have an accurate quarter inch seam allowance if you’re having trouble with your seem allowance you might try buying one of the little rulers with the hole in it that your needle goes through that allows you to put a piece of tape right where your edge of your fabric should be. This should help you get better accuracy. If you are finding that you ruler slips when cutting, try placing a weight on it to hep hold it still.

    The link isn’t working right to get the PDF. It goes to the fish quilt. Love this quilt and want to try it.

    How many squares would I need for a king size quilt? (And I would be adding a border)
