Everyone knows about North Korea, but why doesn't anyone talk about these 3 other "North Koreas" that exist today? Also, there's actually an original North Korea that the Kims took notes from.
This is my first video, so I'd love to hear any constructive feedback on how to improve. ^_^

My family’s friend who emigrated from Turkmenistan used to tell that the agents who eavesdrop on phone conversations would openly laugh if they hear a joke. Her colleague was fired from job because she didn’t enunciate the words of the anthem while singing - something you are required to do at the start of the working day. Also, when president Niyazov decided to promote healthy lifestyle by opening a running track around the capital, the populace was forced to walk on it, and police would not let people leave it unless bribed. Several elderly people died of heart attacks, dehydration and exhaustion at that opening.
Wow, thank you for sharing this.
Maybe in Brussels they are interested in implementing these policies.

At a birthday party for an engineer from Turkmenistan (in the UK for a training course). His UK boss asked him how the leader of his country (Turkmenbashi?) is getting younger. Every business there must have the official photo of the leader of Turkmenistan displayed in the office and they’d just had the latest one delivered.
The engineer was visibly shaken by such a critical comment about his country, despite being in a small provincial town in the UK he looked around him as if he was looking for spies who may report him before answering that he’d not noticed that about his leader. Thousands of miles away from his home country, yet he was terrified to even witness a criticism of his country’s leader.
Thank you for sharing this!
It's like the West and criticising Israel!
Uh oh...
Disappointing that Turkmenistan's "Walk of Health" wasn't mentioned when going over the bizarre things the country does. The president built a 22 mile long walkway that goes into the mountains and every year forces his ministers and other government officials to walk it start to finish while he rides in a helicopter observing them, and berates them for their slow pace at the finish. Easily my favorite part of that country.
They probably didn't know about it at the time.
Fun fact, Eritrea withdrew from World Cup 2026 qualifications because they legit afraid when the team will defect to other countries.
Hmmmm... Maybe I will leave a like.
Let's wait 3 or 4 decades.
Underrated comment
The reason the other countries are largely unknown is that they don't have nuclear weapons.
Cuba doesn't really have much in common with NK, functionally or in outcomes.
Not to mention that the Cuban people aren't culturally isolated. Other Latin Americans are quite similar, and of course being that West African slaves and Spanish colonists were crucial to the formation of the country, it has many cultural links with other parts of the world.
North Korea on the other hand is culturally quite isolated, with South Korea and China being the only two countries with any semblance of links
My friend in high school was from Eritrea, his dad worked in the government and one night they fled and made there way to India, lived there for awhile and then moved to America. He would typically just tell people he’s Indian since he had an Indian accent, he was Christian though and it was always funny to ask him what he though about Indian religious traditions, he would rant about the Ganges River and how he never understood how anyone could go in it
The Ganges is the kind of river to just pray and jump in. Don't look too closely and keep your mouth closed! 🤣
Early in highschool, I somehow stumbled upon an article about Saparmyrat Nyýazow and his the fairly new 12 million dollar gold covered statue of himself that rotates to face the sun. Everything about this man and his country left be bewildered, and astounded, and at the time I ended up going down a rabbit hole just learning about this crazy place. Thanks for mentioning Turkmenistan.

I would argue that Cuba really shouldn't be on this list. It's very isolated from the rest of the world, but that's almost entirely because of the US embargo. And Cuba does have actual elections, different people can come into power, and party membership is not a requirement
Exacly, i agree with you
They have the whole world to trade with, and are still a craphole. It’s the economy, and the heavy handy party rule.
The rest if your post is false as well.
@@hoodatdondar2664 it is not false bro. cubans are economically isolated from the only close up great power which is usa. transport from china and other providing countries is much more expensive. western powers (especially usa) always used and still use their economical leverage (gained mainly by colonization, conquest of land and robbing it) to force their "capitalist utopias" onto poorer nations, btw exploited by the west in the past. most of the chinese companies are still controlled by state. somehow it managed to become the largest economy in the world and its just because they opened for foreign investments which cuba is denied. the incentive for investing in china was cheap and large workforce. there is no such an incentive in cuba thus it stays poor. simple as that. cuba actually has elections and there are no political campaigns. every candidate has the same detailed exposition not depending on their means and income, as it works in "the civilized world". also none of the elected people have a wage other than from their former jobs. so frankly, western nations should literally adopt cuban style of governing in order to make real, democratic, equitic, classless societies.
@hoodatdondar2664 what?! Lol. There's beeb a blockade since Castro was in power lol. They cannot trade w a majority of the world, including the biggest empire in the world, the USA. Which is a huge blow since it's so close.

Albania is apparently called: the North Korea of Europe.
It 100% has a lot less North Korea factors but it is for some reason
Probably because of it’s communist regime during the Cold War
Under Enver Hoxha (1944-1985) Albania was super isolated, at one point having no diplomatic ties with anyone but China. Hoxha notably built a ton of defensive bunkers to prevent invasion. Thats a pretty North Korea move. Now it isn't very North Korea but it was in the past.
It was, its not albanian people are finally free now
Genuinely surprised to not see Belarus present
China not becoming like North Korea is entirely due to luck. Mao's third son died very young, and his second son was mentally ill and widely considered unfit to rule. That left his eldest son, who died in the Korean War. Legends has it that he died because he was hungry one night and went out to make egg fried rice, only the fire/light alerted the UN forces to his presence, and he got bombed. This is widely circulated along the older generations of Chinese people who still remember Mao's rule, and occasionally joke about how "grateful they are to egg fried rice". As such, the phrase "egg fried rice" is banned on Chinese social media like WeChat. (Funnily enough, most of the younger people who accidentally talk about egg fried rice don't actually know about the incident due to heavy government censorship, but seeing their messages censored makes them curious, which is how they find out about the exact thing the government tries to cover up.)
Strange case of unintended consequences
I remember reading about this! Very much the Streisand effect lol.
Yeah. Even after Mao's death, there were contenders that would have kept China like NK. It's sad to see how overshadowed Deng Xiaoping is by Mao because that man is the best thing that happened to the PRC

Cubans can't fish, as the sea belongs to the government. While the politicians eat sea delicacies, a hungry Cuban will get arrested if he takes a dive a grabs a tiny fish from the open sea.

Thats from CIA's own declassified documents.
No, it’s a very good comparison
You can apply this to almost every dictatorship in the 20th century. North Korea is unique because it turned its cult of personality into a religion - codified into the constitution and laws, as opposed it being just a dictatorial status quo until the leader is dead - while also remaining absolutely isolated, unlike Cuba, Eritrea and Turkmenistan, each of whom is member of at least one international organisation. Further, North Korea has managed to remain such under extreme pressure AND developed a nuclear arsenal, while having the 4th largest army in the world - from a population of merely 26 million

I think the big difference between Turkmenistan, Eritrea and Cuba is that you can leave. In Eritrean you have the conscription factor but if most families that can leave while their sons are very young.
I think Cuba is unfairly on the list a little bit. It definitely has a dictatorship but it isn’t cut off the the world in terms of information. Also fun fact one of its biggest exports is its doctors.
There are thousands of Cubans in Venezuela providing valuable education, tourism training, and healthcare services.

I read the title wrong and thought this video was about 3 North Koreans nobody talks about
I think one additional key difference between Cuba and North Korea is that North Korea's (relative) self-isolation is self-imposed, while Cuba is isolated largely because of the trade embargo by the USA.
EDIT: added (relative) to self-isolation, because they aren't completely isolated from the outside world. North Korea has a bunch of diplomatic missions and embassies abroad and other countries have them in North Korea. Cuba has a ton more though, see below.
North Korea also has an embargo put on them though
@@ndsshotgunnose5028 true, but north korea's isolationism predates their embargo
@@ndsshotgunnose5028 Sure, but even then a lot of their self-isolation is self-imposed. North Korea has its embassies in 39 other countries and 22 other countries have embassies in North Korea.
Meanwhile Cuba has embassies in and from most countries in the world *including* the country that is embargo-ing them. They've actively connected with other countries diplomatically.
North Korea being under trade embargo from the USA is also much less impactful because it is *so* much further away from the USA (while Cuba is only 411 miles from Florida) *and* North Korea shares its longest border with its biggest supporter and protector: the People's Republic of China.
no, they politically isolated themselves from non communist countries

I don't think it's fair to put Cuba on the list with these other nations. They don't have the harsh political repression they do, they allow for religious toleration and freedom, and they also have higher standards of living
Cuba's not quite as bad as the other places on this list but it's still a hellhole

@@ArtificialDuck Lol it was last year, and most people was against it. Almost the last country in the Americas to approve it

I dont think Cuba would qualify as a "North Korea". It is open to tourism, it sends doctors to other countries, it sells cigars instead of buying them, and (with some difficulty) they can communicate with the outside world and have musicians, writers and journalists in other parts of the world, some praising, and some denouncing the regime. That would be unthinkable in NK.
"Lies"
The artists that you are talking about all live in exile or are incarcerated in Cuba right now. There’s only a handful of exceptions because they reached a significant level of international fame which makes them immune to the regime. They know that it would cause to much attention and that the UN would intervene if those artists were arrested.
Also the doctors that are sent to other countries are basically subject to modern-day slavery. They work under terrible conditions and barely make any money (because the regime takes most of their salary’s). And the few bucks that they make they send back to support their families.
Also if you’re a doctor in Cuba you basically have a 0% chance of getting a Visa to leave the country, because the regime is afraid that you’ll escape (which is the only reasonable thing to do as a Cuban citizen).
So basically you’re an enslaved prisoner with a medical degree….
@@Rafa-ip3th That is still more open than north korea. True, some cuban doctors that came to my country never got back to Cuba, but I dont see North Korean doctors anywhere. I am not saying Cuba is free. I am just saying it is not like NK.

It is understandable to label a country a “North Korea” if that’s your frame of reference, but it’s better to look at a country’s origins and then its current form, instead of the other way around.
This is an 8 minute UA-cam video realistically 1 hour isn't long enough to do that for one of these countries.
He says "China is the OG North Korea" which is absurd nonsense.
1st. The U.S.S.R. created and handpicked the leadership of NK + Armed them..etc.
2. NK had to ask permission from U.S.S.R./Stalin to start the Korean war NOT China.
3. Mao got everything from the Soviets from Ideology to leadership style to Weapons to Aid..etc

I guessed the first two, but I was thinking Belarus might have been the last one. Or Transnistria is we‘re stretching the definition of country.
I've been to Cuba 10+ years ago and it was very pleasant.
As a tourist, you're probably more protected and happy than any regular citizen will be...
If a local would approach tourists (most easily spotted by skin colour, clothing and then language in that order I suppose, and demeanour) then they would be stopped by police if they saw that.
A friend on the same trip with Colombian (iirc) heritage was stopped by police (with police dogs and submachine guns, mind you) and asked questions because they (the local police) thought he was Cuban and he was walking with us. There wasn't any aggression but it was very weird.
I do not know how things have changed the last 10 years. Cuba, when I was there, was kind of "reverse" bigots and they were bigoted towards their own people, in a way.
We were there for a bit over 2 weeks and lived with host families for about a week.
Everything was very communist, so being host for tourists provided extra income and made people rich, basically. It was probably not easy to get that permit legally domestically.
Breakfasts were 1 egg, good amounts of juice (makes sense) and dry bread with a couple of "cheese" slices that squeaks like plastic when you chew it. No butter iirc, but salt (and I can't remember if there was pepper).
At the hotels, it was quite a different world. And the best juice I've ever had in my entire life (still to this date).
They didn't have "western" soda (but they had a crap ton of different Pringles for some reason) but they had something called "TropiCola" which was actually very good.
All in all it was a very nice experience, though in retrospect I don't know what to think about their people (in regards to how their nation is run).
It's an extremely charming nation and sometimes it seemed like paradise (geographically), however it was quite obvious that - although surprisingly clean - people were generally very poor and not having a lot of choices for determining their own path or future (when I say "not having a lot" I mean basically 0)
"It was very communist" and becoming rich from a specific job don't really align
Biggest obstruction on living standards is definitely the various US embargoes that drastically limit imports and exports.
So most things that aren't produced in Cuba are going to be somewhat limited.
I'm looking to visit or even get citizenship someday but it'll take quite a while.
@@DonDadda45 Tourism industry is really profitable since living costs are really inexpensive.
Tourists usually are rather wealthy so you can easily get food for a month from a few tips on top of the regular wage.

@@DonDadda45 Gotcha.
Cuba is the only country on this list that I've been to, and definitely don't think it belongs. It is a dictatorship, sure. About half the world is. But it's not a particularly repressive one. The government does make real efforts to deliver on their communist ideals (far more than China or North Korea do), on top of being open to private business and trade.
One of my big measures of dictatorship-shittiness-level is leader portraits. Visit Syria? Every business has a portrait of Assad. (Egypt, too, when I was there, but they've had a revolution since, so maybe better?)
Visit Cuba? There's official propaganda on the streets, but nothing on private property. That means there's no thought police traveling around making sure everyone feigns loyalty to the regime.

Zimbabwe
DRC
Myanmar, Iran, Venezuela, and Equatorial Guinea all come close to this category, but not as bad. Interestingly, the two remaining one party states, Laos and Vietnam, aren't that repressive, kind of middle of the pack for countries.
Laos is repressive.
Laos is quite bad. They're still operating under kinship extermination and killing the children of children or nephews/nieces of children of people who, decades ago, opposed them during the Laotian Civil War. It's one of the nastiest little conflicts that the wider world typically forgets all about.

Entertaining video and great topic but I would have liked it to have more information about these countries. I think it was a bit brief and could have been better if it reached around 14 minutes instead so there would be time to talk more about each country. Im glad i came across this video and your channel, keep going and you will definitely become big!

Okay, now tell the people WHY Cuba was so isolated from the rest of the world. *cough*USembargo*cough*cough*
Absolutely! If the US made Cuba a trade partner, it would turn around- as she has made very clear. It’s that crazy Miami Cuban voting bloc - 4 generations removed- who want to bring the long dead Batista and his racist, ultra capitalist rule back, keeping Cuba globally oppressed. Time to grow UP - and grow beyond the US’ damaging and convenient adherence to the Monroe Doctrine ( papa Doc, baby doc and Trujillo) that keeps Cuba so isolated.
NOBODY in Cuba wants the isolation the US continues to force on them.
Nobody.
Refusing to trade with country≠ blockading it.
Fun fact: Eritrea is one of only two countries in the _world_ where the govt applies citizenship based taxation.
The other one is a tad bigger and most people can spot it on a map, with a sliver of the world population believing it's even the only country of the world.
You are incorrect. There are other countries with citizenship based taxation, such as Hungary or Tajikistan
Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_taxation
@@MrVsbiHungary's not exactly true, if you're in an EU country (the most common locations to immigrate to as a Hungarian) you don't pay taxes in Hungary

Even if it's entirely true, it would be 5 instead of 2 countries out of 195, going from 1 to 2.5%.
I would advise you to use actual credible info on taxation (PwC and others) before implementing anything though.
Cuba is hardly isolated. Only the US does not trade with Cuba. Canada, Europe, and most of Latin America do. There are regular flights from Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal to Havana. It is a popular Canadian winter vacation spot.
And it still sucks

I would like to point out that part of the reason Cuba is so isolated/protectionist is because ever since the Cold War, the US has done huge amounts of sanctioning on it. The US literally set up a navy blockade around Cuba with the explicit purpose of starving them out and destroying the country. Literally every country in the UN, with the exception of the US and Israel, believe the sanctions are pretty horrible and should be lifted. The US also has a history of trying to directly sabotage their government. Cuba isn't great, but given the circumstances, I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, technically, Cuba isn't communist. They're led by a communist party, but being called communist isn't the same as actually being communist. They would be much more accurately described as a type of authoritarian socialist state.
Another "that wasnt real communism" trope...
@@Vhvjdow0ajsbcdhcuei3o22-om4sm It wasn’t though?? Communism is often defined as a “classless, stateless, moneyless society.” They clearly still have social/political classes, a centralized government, and still use money. By definition, Cuba isn’t communist. They are authoritarian socialist.
And to be honest, cuba and their citizens should have expected these US reactions. Regardless if it's right or wrong, stronger nations bully weaker nations, weaker nations must sacrifice parts of their sovereignty to their stronger regional powers to preserve their rights.
And it's the same with people too, Che Guevara cant go around country to country starting revolutions without someone wanting you dead, should maybe be more political in these situations, and less revolutionary.
You left out that little bit where Cuba nationalized ( ie stole ) US assets and placed nuclear missiles aimed at the USA on it's soil. You also forgot to remember that Cuba is a one party state with no freedom of speech and no rule of law. Cuba has also indulged in military adventures all over Africa and South America. etc etc etc . Cuba is a thug state.
@@rosengrenj9 Every single example of communism still has social/political classes, because you can't actually get rid of those, because they are inherent to human incentive structures. People like you would never admit that anything is "real communism" because every single example will ALWAYS have an elite political class that rules over everyone else.
The red guards fighting each other is some hilarious OG leftist infighting
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but there was a time during the Cold War where Albania, under the communist regime of Enver Hoxha, was isolated from the rest of the world similar to the other countries mentioned.
It’s kind of a long story, but communist Albania left the Warsaw Pact and sided with Maoist China after falling out with the Soviet Union before later falling out with China after Nixon and Mao revitalized diplomatic relations. After which, Albania entered a period of international isolation until Hoxha’s death in 1985.
During this period, Hoxha also developed quite an obsession with building bunkers.
You missed a great one to make a video on, Belarus, its the last dictatorship in Europe
I'd say not every dictatorship is like a North Korea. It's a spectrum, you could say any monarchy in existence is a less democratic than a parliament, then there's the US, with a two far-right party system, then dictatorships such as Russia and Belarus, than NK
What makes NK special is an ongoing massive cult of personality (which can exist in democracies), and total lack of democracy, and the intense isolation from the globe.
I wouldn't put cuba on this list. Ive traveled there and people seem genuinely happy. Theres internet there and the governments grip on the people is nowhere near as strong as NK. Granted it's nowhere near a good government, but not close to as repressive as NK
If it's so good, why is it that every time there's a sporting event there are always athletes asking for asylum and refuge at the end?
@@N1CH0_N1N3 I'm not saying it's some great country, I'm saying it's not at all like North Korea. People in North Korea are required to venerate their leaders and are allowed ZERO access to the outside world. There is no internet. Tourists CANNOT even leave their tour group or they will get in trouble with the north korean government. In Cuba there is access to internet (albeit it's not unrestricted), people are not required to keep a picture of their leader in their house, they can get whatever hairstyle they want, tourists are free to do as they please, etc.

7:44 the wildest shit is that most of those weapons basically floated around rural China until the late 1990s, and actual villages and municipalities occasionally got into shooting wars with each other over land claims (the state pays the local government that owns the land when they build roads, the shooting is to make sure it's their village that gets paid and not the neighboring one)

Why didn't you bring up the US embargo on Cuba?
It's why cuba is more isolated compared to other countries.
The embargo isn't a blockade, Cuba can still trade and interact with other nations, even NATO or other American allies like Japan or Australia.
Came here to say this
@@jackson4672well... sorta... the embargo also means that if another country trades with Cuba, the US stops trade with them... it puts other countries in the awkward position of choosing trade with the largest economy in the world... or Cuba... i wonder which they choose.

People defending Cuba are silly. Cuba is a heavily sanctioned communist one party state (that's basically just a dictatorship) which is exactly what North Korea is. Just because Cuba has tourism and its citizens aren't in crippling poverty doesn't make it as different as people are arguing.

Pretty good. Since it's your first, I wanted to give some constructive feedback. I felt like some of the sections were shorter than I would like liked, such as Eritrea. It's your first, so I imagine you didn't want to go too long, but I feel like going into some depth of the political system, both historically and now, would have been good. The jokes are well done, while not overshadowing the actual content in most cases. That's really hard to pull off, so that was nice. A minor quibble, the flags holding on screen with no speaking or other content probably could have been shorter. I was just starting to be worried it froze or my audio cut out when it transitioned off. I was nervous when you included Cuba, because I thought the North Korea comparison might be a bit extreme, but I think giving the context that they are moving (slowly) in the right direction was good. I honestly feel like you could almost do a whole 10 minute or so video on each of these and it could be good content. I'll certainly be following your future content, because you have done really well for a first video. Congratulations on the surprise success!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write your thoughts! I really appreciate your feedback, and I'll try to incorporate it into this next video that I'm working on right now. Especially with your point about going into more detail, this video will certainly be longer and more complicated than this one. Can't wait to share it with you when I'm done!
Based of the thumbnail I thought you were gonna pick Venezuela over Cuba. I'd say Venezuela is far worse the Cuba right now, and if someone pointed a gun to my head and forced me to choose which one to live in I'd pick Cuba.
Fair. Part of that's because in many ways the current Venezuelan government is a client or even puppet of Cuba, with Cuban secret police and advisors operating above the law and helping to oversee regular resource shipments (especially oil) back to Cuba.
Venezuela's also going through a kind of accelerated collapse like what Cuba's economy and society went through in the 1960s (due to US Sanctions and being a pariah state whose government tried to end the world as we know it that was rapidly turning Cuban society inside out to try and concentrate power) and the 1990s (when the Soviet Union fell and Moscow love money dried up). Things will probably stabilize to a more livable but still oppressive and degraded society in Venezuela at some point, but that'll take a while.
Watch the news dude, the same thing is happening in Cuba with razes right now, we cant even boast about “safety” anymore

In fairness, I don’t think Cuba deserves to be on this list. Burma might.

Cuba has no ban in trading others, it's USA restricting others to trade with Cuba. If some ship company deliver something to Cuba - it will be blacklisted by USA to work in the region so nobody does that. Cuba would be in another state if not for US bullying.
