Did you hear of Contron's Mentally Disturbing series? I thought not. It's not a story other horror UA-camrs would tell you. It's a s***poster legend.

It may have been internet breaking, but it was not really all that original not the first "analog horror" IMO.
Everything's different with different audio

NO clue where I found that horse photo - probably googled it, “creepy picture” something along those lines- that’s how I found quite a few images that I included,
The people dancing clip is from Prodigy’s music video VOODOO PEOPLE.
Thanks again for making this I’m still so shocked and humbled.
I truly appreciate your work and deep dive into my videos. I can tell you now that I’m definitely going to be working on at least a few more for the series. All my respect and appreciation, man!
Eagerly awaiting whatever you come up with!
@@farrellmcguire Thank you! I hope it isn't too much trouble, but I am Deaf and get most of my accessibility through captions. Currently, this video has auto-captions, but they are unfortunately not very accurate. There are apps and other online tools you can use that will automatically caption or transcribe the captions for you, then you can upload the caption file to the video, and they appear without delay. It would mean a lot to me! But I understand if it's too much. Thanks again for making this video!
@@contron you know what, I’m pretty sure davinci resolve has a pretty good auto caption feature now. I’m on vacation atm, but when I’m home, I’ll see if I can get an SRT file generated. Should only take a second!

i do not miss the jumpscare era of youtube. i remember relying so much on the like to dislike ratio to gauge if a video had a potential jump scare or not haha
At some point, back in those days, I took an afternoon trying to desensitize myself from jumpscares by just trying to watch as many jumpscare videos as possible
It did not work. Instead, the next morning I was woken up by my alarm clock radio being between stations and thus producing a weird static noise, which prompted a jumpscare to appear in my dream.

I don't think anything represents the sharp contrast between modern and early UA-cam better than watching a clip of Contron's weird and creepy "mentally disturbing" video immediately followed by a midroll ad for the new Google Pixel phone 😂😂
They're like YTPs but horror themed.
Nothing is new. We've gone with these same tropes since 2006, apparently.
That’s actually so cool. Just can’t outdo the basic bag o tricks.
@@teirusureynard9279 yes correct
Ytps are hardly new either tho?
... honestly, with that first contron "haunted video". i can't help but admire the primitiveness of the jumpscare - just him physically thrusting the camera at this static skull prop. nobody puppeteering the skull, not even an edited zoom-in. its so amateur and objectively bad but its just so charming.
Gracias 😂

Yeah I imagine that version of the horse image probably just came from some site that doesn’t exist anymore. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to answer! :)
I'm reminded of the old adage: "People can't look away from a car crash."
All the drama surrounding ObeyTheWalrus while Contron was mostly drama free is probably why more people remember ObeyTheWalrus sadly.
That's actually not the case. Keep in mind, especially in Latin America, that UA-cam wasn't as uploader centric as it is today. I myself am south american, and I'm ashamed to admit that I just learnt about all that drama with this very video, and I saw Obedece a la morsa for the first time in 2010, yet I'm certain that I'm not am exception with my ignorance of that topic.
Viral videos, especially horror, generally grew bigger than their creators. That was fueled by the archaic nature of file sharing, through infrarred and emails, and the fact that most people were gullible and geniunely bought that some edgy teen's finihario was made for satanic ends.
Also, I can't trace the exact reasons for why, but at that time the entire internet/video sharing horror scene was more popular in Latin America than in the US. Even before youtube, there were hundreds of forums and sites dedicated to horror stories and shock content, 'haunted' emails were frequent, and there were even tv shows who shared and discussed this kind of content; similar to all this internet mystery youtubers, but with late 00's Latin American tv production. And Obedece a la morsa was a clear hispanic video thrown to this cauldron.
In short, Obedece a la morsa's popularity has more to do with being released in the right place at the right time than anything else.
@@Tomahawks360That footage used to freak the shit outta me when I first saw it years ago but after watching a whole video dedicated to it and the back story of the person depicted in it, it kinda "exorcised" the creepiness for me because of the humanization of that individual
Ghost Car isn't a UA-cam video. It's an actual commercial. No doubt it was uploaded to the site, but it was made as a genuine commercial.
German TV ad for an energy drink, absolutely genius marketing. There's like 8 others out there from the same campaign but they didn't go as viral
Yup definitely fits in with the "odd commercial or pirated music video" part of youtube back then :)
"not a youtube video"... yet its on youtube.. curious.. hrm....
@@midwesternjamesthey mean it wasn’t made to be uploaded on UA-cam, doofus. You know damn well.
The brand is called K-Fee (a play on Kaffee, the German word for coffee, the letter K pronounced "ka" and Fee meaning fairy). It's coffee in a can. If you look up "K-Fee Werbung" (advertisment) you'll find the original.
Farrell, you should do a video about internet horror on sites pre-UA-cam like stupidvideos, albino blacksheep, ebaumsworld, and newgrounds and if each site catered to a certain genre of horror and how they may have influenced UA-cam later on
i would love to see this. is there any other video about this by any other creators ?
I'd love that! I'm really nostalgic for watching my dad play a golf game on ebaums world while all these strange and crazy thumbnails would pop up on the side
Definitely wanna dive into some of the lesser covered corners of that bygone internet era, hopefully in the new year!

Obey The Walrus is another example of clones getting more popular than the original.
like Hydrox and Oreos
Or Heathcliff and Garfield or Namor and Aquaman

Thx for talking about Shrouded Hand ,

Sometimes I really miss the low budget video origins of UA-cam. Now it's all high production values, professional looking videos from UA-camrs with whole teams of editors, writers, videographers, etc. It's not a bad thing to have high production values but I do miss the way it was fifteen years ago, from time to time.
It’s so interesting to see how horror as a genre has evolved through UA-cam itself-you can still see where the roots are ingrained in videos today in lots of analog horror projects utilizing older footage and harsh sounds.
Rapidly becoming *the* go-to chronicler and historian of the interweird.
As soon as that first backrooms video came out I knew this guy was legit.
One of the sound effects in Mentally Disturbed Part Two is the recorded radio signal sounds from Venus
the dancing people in the jungle might be from voodoo people by the prodigy music video
I think you might have solved this one! The skull crash part is in that video, and there are people headbanging on the jungle floor. I didn't see the exact clip of the dancing people from contron's video, but I'll take a closer look later.
Damn you beat me to it
I was thinking it came from some obscure film but I guess a music video does make more sense
I had the same presumption myself since the skull crash did come from there and the headbanging scene had the same color scheme.
Though for the life of me I couldn't find this specific scene from the official music video so I'm thinking that this must be a different angle that was left unused or something. I'd like to be proven wrong though!
I was just about to say this. I fcking love The Prodigy

LEMON DEMON MENTIONED
OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO SHOCKING! THIS VISION YOU MADE MADE SO MUCH SENSE!
It's kind of strange but the mentally disturbed series is how relatable is it. I remember years ago making simliar stuff on my old youtube channel. The only different was the clips I used, I mainly would download old commercials and make them creepier. I would even put little hidden messages and easter eggs. I wasn't aware of ARGs or anything like that then and I can't tell if I actually put any meaning into them pass "look at this HAUNTED commercial".
They were never popular and I don't even know if they are still up but it's kind of getting a hit of nostalgia seeing those old videos
Lfg my feed is blessed by a Farrell upload
The video of those people dancing in the jungle is a snippet from the music video for Voodoo People by The Prodigy. Great band, great song and great video.
Awesome video! I never knew that OBEYDAWALRUS was a copycat or a gooner. Also had no idea Contron even existed. Very interesting stuff here. Wishing you a happy marriage too!
And one last thing, really looking forward to your next album! Just wanted to ask, when can we expect for it to be available?
Thank you! :) I’m still writing some songs for my solo album, but unfortunately I pretty much won’t have time to actually produce until I’m at a point where I do UA-cam full time. Hopefully that will be some time next year! I’m planning to do most of the production directly on tape so it won’t take a ton of time to actually produce (hopefully!)
@@farrellmcguire Props to you man, love your content. Keep up the great work!
These videos that were shown give me a feeling of fear and a lot of discomfort because this is a trauma that I had when I had anxiety and thought That I was hallucinating about those things that appeared in the video 😣
I wasnt familiar w the mentally disturbed vids but its so cool to see early examples of people using the internet as a medium for experimental art. u can sense some unknowable feeling being expressed thru them. the ones with harsh noise especially are so reminiscent of projects from the 80s industrial scene. really similar to nurse with wound music videos or early SPK recordings. Very cool !
also its cool how you chronicled my youtube horror journey exactly, from marbel hornets to mrcreepypasta to nightmind and reignbot and all they inspired
So weird thinking back about how I would watch Marble Hornets when they were coming out… it’s been so long
Nice video, just for information, the clip with the crawling is from a movie called "The Poughkeepsie Tapes" where the crawling eventually reaches the (tied down) woman and inserts needles into her neck, causing her to choke on the blood coming from her mouth and die, its a really disturbing scene
Yup - and it's free to watch on Tubi.
5:38 oh my God!!!!!!! I remember watching this video in high school when I was a senior. It gave me really weird dreams! Thanks for talking about it, I've always wanted to find it and rewatch it.
this guy Contron is kinda a video artist for me. It is really experimental way he edit and transform image and sound
0:37 It was actually imported to UA-cam
This was pretty Scary!! Also I get lowkey a very familiar feeling when seeing the Mentally Disturbed series. Great video analysis!!!
12:12 I'm fairly certain thats a clip from the music video for Voodoo People by The Prodigy. I noticed they used other clips from the music video like in 9:51
How the heck do you only have 60K subs? Your videos are awesome
I thought the people dancing in the jungle was from the music video of "Voodoo People" by The Prodigy but after watching it nothing matched exactly.
I just posted same thing you said - without seeing your comment 😮 I think it must be an alternate version (old people like me would have watched back then haha) ??
That clip is from the Voodoo People music video though...

I saw that guy with the weird smile and thought he was from Black Hole Sun’s music video lol.
A few of the clips were from the Black Hole Sun video…. Good eye!
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS. Mentally disturbing is one of my favorite media series ever, but nobody ever seems to talk about it. So THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
It makes sense to me that style of video he was making would really have impact in the Spanish world. And i can see why there was no way forward for Contron. There wasn't a place yet for what analog horror would become and I don't know that he could have or would have wanted to try and create something bigger out of it all. It's good he's getting the recognition now, because a lot of people owe him a debt.
love how mentally disturbing has nearly the same format as 21st century humor
the clip with the dancin people and the clip with the car crashing into the skull are from the musicvideo to "voodoo people" by the prodigy.
Ding ding ding!
In the 1st mentally disturbing video at 1 : 26 there's a "Disc Jockey Traditionals, Vol. 7 - Scream with Psycho" sound effect, which for me it's better than the original Psycho music. And i think it was the very first UA-cam video to use that sound effect.
this channel is yet another reminder of where all horror stems from.
"A reality is just what we tell each other it is." (fire life advice btw XD)
true unknown is true terror for you are powerless, and these videos are just that, mysterious, add some creepy undertones and imagery and there you have it.
Oh dear, a Farrell video 2 mins ago? Good wishes to you on your marriage, brother.
Love how the mentally disturbing vids are basically just horror YTP
you should really look into Apollo 20: the unknown mission; I believe it actually predates mentally disturbing. Its basically the best horror series and REAL first analog horror series ever made. The creator made the videos to promote a book about the subject matter. It was so good, people actually didn't know if the videos were real or not. And on top of that the real NASA had to come out and tell everyone it was fake.
Wow, that's actually a topic I haven't seen anyone cover before. Very good video!
I remember when I was in highschool (around 2008) everyone was terrified of Obedece a la Morza, I even remember a story running around about a girl who watched the video, got cursed and killed her little brother JAJAHSH😭 when I finally saw the video I felt a little bit underwhelmed, it was creepy but not as scary as I was expecting
I noticed metropolis in your watch list, Farreld. It's good and tbh it's horror adjacent
Been meaning to watch it for years

The "mentally disturbing" series also reminded me of a video from my childhood called "Scary Shit" by the user dolerigger uploaded in 2008.
It is a 2 minute slideshow of a bunch of low-res odd images, flashing/jumpscare/weird GIFs and ominous songs.
To be honest it was probably inspired by contron's "mentally disturbing" series.
Regarding the horse image: Contron p[probably just photoshopped out the text off the album cover.

Man I miss the days before 2015. Honestly, 2019-2024 just feel like one big year to me.
some more context on OBEYDAWALRUS, from a mexican youtube user:
- the original Obey The Walrus video gained so much popularity not only because of the creator's weird lore, but also because at the time video sharing was JUST becoming popular specifically in mexico, where OBEYDAWALRUS lived. most internet horror was via text and images, like the og creepypastas and "cursed" chainmail. this whole video horror phenomenon was new to a lot of people.
-mexico is an EXTREMELY religious country, with over 90% of citizens being either practicing catholics or at least culturally catholic. this has lead to various satanic panics; a lot of people that watched Obey The Walrus thought it was "satanic" because historically a lot of horror fiction has been seen as "satanic" here. it sucks because people have no media literacy, and a lot of it is children and teenagers being genuinely afraid of "satanic" imagery because they've been indoctrinated into catholicism and conservatism since birth.
The walrus video is just trash, disgusting, eye bleeding and unwatchable.
When I see one second of it. All my blood freezes, my legs become pale, and I remove it almost inmediately.
Worst video ever.
I hate Mexico now.

So contron is not only one of the first analog horror creators, but also one of the first dead UA-camrs to make a horror series (ofc on youtube)
As someone from latin america, i had no idea all of this was even going on! i only knew about Obedese a la Morsa, and mostly because of a debunking video by a youtuber called Jotiaftereffectreturns or something along those lines who had a series abalyzing and debunking scary videos from back then
