  • Using a visual training aid Barry discusses the main target area for striking the cue ball, especially side (english). He uses one example (potting the black from it's spot) to show how much side he would apply to the cue ball on this particular shot. To donate - / barrystarksnookercoach

      How do yo U determine center ball for all angled shots If i just want to use center ball striking should I start from center or use edges of tip to determine line of aim

    It is called "english" because the English were the first to figure out that chalk helps the cue grip the ball better. Having a properly chalked cue is a huge aspect in allowing off-center shots to work with any sort of consistency. Due to this innovation the English players were the first to play with more spin and hence why this term took hold outside of the UK. After seeing how this worked the use of chalk took off worldwide but it was in use in England first. The term might sound a bit strange now that everyone everywhere uses chalk and plays with spin but such is the nature of the history of language. One other interesting thing to mention is that in the commonwealth countries there is less of a tendency to call sidespin "English".

      It's only called 'check' if it's used to slow the cue ball down. You can also have running side,.

    When I was a kid and had no money I would spend hours just playing with the cue ball, that helps or at least helped me much more than I even thought about. I was just mucking around working out what the white would do if I struck it in various ways. It teaches you control, but more importantly, it teaches you all the angles, meaning when looking at a pot/shot you're already well aware where the cue ball will end up.
    Therefore you're straight away very aware of how you need to play the shot to get a good position on the next ball. All those things help massively. Snooker isn't just about being able to pot balls though, if you can't use the cue ball while keeping it as simple as you can, you'll struggle to make a break of any note. If you find you're trying to screw the cue ball straight back half the length of the table for the position you want, you'll find that 99% of the time you'll be playing the wrong shot.
    Is there a better feeling than potting a difficult ball playing deep reverse screw that takes off and lands exactly as you tried?
    Yes, there is a better feeling (buzz) than that, and that's to be able to do it consistently, over and over again.

    The most important part in playing any amount of side is to make sure you keep the tip of the cue going straight through the part of the cue ball you strike, many people, when playing side, pull the shot by not keeping that cue tip straight through the target. It means everything, when you get it right once, you'll not forget it.

      andrew. All players have problems with side spin at some stage in the learning process, its just that some players cope with it better than others and learn to use it to their advantage.

    Hi Barry, thanks for the new footage. Just to mention what I see: The width of the cue tip is roughly one fifth of the diameter of the cue ball. The mid area of the ball that is safe to hit is about three cue tips wide. The outer ring that is risky to hit is one cue tip wide. That might seem so very obvious, but I failed to take notice of it having a live ball right before my nose.

    • @trevorberridge6079
      @trevorberridge6079 2 роки тому

      The greatest "spinners" in snooker have very thin tips that allow them to hit outside the ring by quite a distance. You'll notice these players chalk their cues obsessively to get the grip required for the extreme positioning.

    'English' is used in America to denote spin given to almost any ball that has been given intentional spin. The games most associated with 'English' in my circle are Golf and Pool; both games popularized by our British forebears.

    Barry, to me it seems that you dipped the cue on your delivery, but I think this was mainly because you were standing upright and not really focusing much on your cue action, am I correct? If so, it would be cool to see you break building with this camera to see your cue action in actual match play situations (or maybe even have Kyren use it to show what a professional cue action looks like!).
    Love your channel, keep it up!

    When a cue ball is struck on either side of its vertical axis, giving it “side spin, that's called "English" in billiards. It may also occur when a ball collides with another or with a rail. The term comes from the British players who first became famous with sidespin techniques. The Americans could say, "Look at all the British they're adding, which became "English" or now, "english" with a lower case "e" the last bit explains where the term english in american pool came about

    It's the finer margins that a lot of us Pool and Pub type of players take for granted and not really sort of pay much attention to detail. A 10 pence piece is small, and I'm sure the size of the balls of Pool are smaller than Snooker. There is relevance and benefits to side, top spin, and screw-back, but of course, it has to ultimately be executed the right way. I wonder if one of those icue balls could be purchased; it would certainly help in being more disciplined with the Cue Ball. Cheers

    Hello mr.Stark . I took your advices and recored my action on camera. And I figured out that my problem is my cue delivery. As I do my pre shot routine I deliver the cue fast and hard and that causes unintentional side and not striking the spot on cue ball that I intend to.

    i guess it really depends on where youre from. here in the midwest, USA anything not center is english, top right, bottom left, left ect..

  • @silvermediastudio
    @silvermediastudio 5 років тому

    I've always thought about how far off center I hit based on diameter of the cue tip.
    So instead of having those rings on the iQue, just use your cue tip to do the measurement in real time. You can move it up or down, left or right, 1/4 of the tip diameter, 1/2, 3/4, or a full measure. With smaller tips, you can go out to 1-1/4 without difficulty. If that's too much granularity for your skill level, do it in 1/3rds.
    This is similar to visualizing segments of the ball to assist in aiming.

    In the UK putting "draw" on the cue ball to control it's direction and movement is popularly known as "screw". I always believed Americans didn't like to commentate on snooker matches and find themselves saying "He's going to have to use a deep screw to get both balls safe." or "Screwing on a fast table can be messy." or similar phrases. They just didn't seem to like the use of the words "screw" and "screwing" because of the sexual connotation. Or maybe Bible Belt fanatics lobbied to have the term banned. In either case, as the technique was commonly used by the English (all Brits were labelled English by Americans at one point) they called it an English. Oddly, if you requested an "English" in England you'd be given a fried breakfast.

    The problem with using center ball on cut shots is they have to be over cut to account for the friction between the balls contacting. Every cut must the overcut. The slower the shot the more it must be overcut. I find it much more intuitive to aim where the ball needs to go and add outside to create the overcut. If inside is needed usually a firmer stoke will give the squirt necessary to overcut the object ball to pocket it.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Tim. This is also why side is used by a lot of players to counter the need to over cut using the side to kick the ball on line, what is commonly known as 'helping side.'

    "English" comes from "body English," the contortions a player goes through after the ball has left the cue. So, while "body English" is what we do after the ball is in motion, the term "English" is reserved to describe motion actually put on the ball by its spin.

  • @poly_hexamethyl

    Thanks for another great video Mr. Stark. A beginner question: suppose you have your cue lined up for a straight shot, aiming at the center of the cue ball. To change to a side-spin shot, you would move the cue tip over a bit, away from the center of the cue ball, as you showed. My question is, do you keep the back of the cue still when you do this, so that the cue now angles a bit away from the line of the shot, or do you move the back of the cue as well, keeping the cue parallel to the line of the shot, when you aim for a different part of the cue ball?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому +3

      Poly. This is slightly controversial, some players would argue one way, others the opposite. So much depends upon the distance between the balls, how much side is being applied, how much the cue throws etc. My advise is to experiment and find your own way because it is a question of feel.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 5 років тому +1

      Personally, I change the entire angle of the cue, which means my setup and stance and body are also positioned accordingly. This allows me to set up, bridge, and swing the cue with consistency every single shot, regardless of whether I'm using side or not. I strive to make the same stroke, every single time. Eliminate as much variation as possible, everything on rails like a finely-tuned machine.

    Sir you are doing a great work and I'm a fan of your coaching style. I request you to give some tips for long screw shots. I'm finding it difficult to screw back on long pots, it rather ends up as stun instead of screw shot.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Harshit. Screwing back from distance does demand a lot of cue power, players tend to resort to power rather than timing. As a result there is tension in the action, they don't get through the ball as they should, also because of the power they have to use they don't hit the ball where they think they are hitting it. Please concentrate on relaxing, getting through the ball and feeling it making sure that there is no movement on the shot. Remember this is a difficult shot, when you see it done on the television the cloth the professionals play on is probably more responsive that yours so don't expect miracles in the early stages.

    And about shoveling??
    Or the seesaw action????

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Run Run. The seesaw or shoveling action generally occurs when players use the major muscles of the arm to pull the cue back and then deliver it forward. Unfurling the rear fingers helps to alleviate this but it still needs work to reduce it. There is a slight slope on the cue because of the height of the cushion rail but there is no need to increase this with the cue action. Some players do this as a result of the driving action and do it very well but this occurs naturally and is not something to deliberately develop.

      Kai. Often using an excessive amount of side is a mistake especially if by using the amount your comment suggests you risk a mis-cue. Top players can get a good reaction on the cue ball by a good cue action and timing and this is what you should strive for. I have always been impressed by certain players who seemingly strike the cue ball with only slight off centre striking yet get reaction of a cushion that suggests they have applied a lot of side, this is down to good technique and timing.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      auxie. Each professional player delivers the cue slightly differently, just concentrate on where and how you hold the cue, play with a relaxed grip, rehearse the shot you are going to play through your preparatory waggles and then try to deliver the cue smoothly and in a straight line. There is no magic cure, just hard frustrating work. The middle pockets are only difficult when you are trying to pot from an angle, this is because you are only aiming at a tiny target. On club tables there tends to be an heavy nap on the cloth and this tends to pull a rolling ball into the pocket when you play towards baulk, but tends to pull away from the pocket when playing with the nap. Please take note that this is only a slight movement and only experience can teach you, also tables tend to vary on this.

    Barry you didn't actually explain WHY you (and professionals) use side in that instance as it didn't look as though you were trying to get the cue ball to react after hitting the cushion to get position on another ball. So why use side and not just ordinary centre ball for a 'normal' everyday shot when the only thing we want to do is pot the black? Thanks

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Shipley. It would be simple just to say that it becomes a habit and in truth for some that is what it is. Also when you are potting from an angle there can be an element of squeeze of the object ball from the intended line, the side can be useful to reduce this. What is also very common is a player may prefer to play with a hint of side from one side of the table, from the opposite side of the table he may think he is playing with the same amount of side but in reality he is either playing with less or indeed more. This can be that he has a slight flaw in his action or that he is not using the dominant eye correctly and the habit has become ingrained.

    OK, that is how to play side. But why do you do it? And what direction does the cue ball go in? As a total amateur it always seems to me that the cue ball will take off in the opposite direction to the side.

    - G'day Barry,
    I'm just wondering what your favourite shot in snooker is to play? Mine is a half ball yellow to go around the houses for the green, for example.
    Orrin.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach

      Orrin. Potting the black from a position low on, it sending the cue ball around the yellow pocket angle to find the gap between the yellow and brown and playing position on the yellow. Always a nice one to perform correctly.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      bob. Its one thing to use side from close range but to use it from distance gets very difficult. Just like any other shot the greater the distance between the balls the more accurate you have to be. May I suggest that you should try to cut back on your use of side even on close range pots, it may be, without realising it, that you are using it to hide a flaw in your cue action, please think deeply about this.

    The worst habbit you can have in Snooker is a want to play side often, you actually don't need side to often, in pool its much different, you've less space to work the cue ball around meaning side helps slow the cue ball down even without hitting a cusion, but that's getting technical lool.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +2

      Nirmal. Acceleration as you hit and get through the ball is what keeps the cue on line and helps to generate the spins that are so often needed. Amateurs are often guilty of deceleration (quitting on the shot) hence potting or positional play is jeopardised. It is doubtful that any problems in this area will show up on video, that is until we have enough funds to hire a fast speed camera.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      Dan. I have tried to explain this in this and other videos. Cutting a ball to the left with right hand side allows the player to hit the ball slightly thicker which means there is more resistance which in turn means that the player can generally do more with the cue ball in terms of positional play. The same can be said cutting a ball to the right with left hand side.

      Dhan. In the situation you mention the blue effectively becomes another green and you could have potted the green legally by striking the blue first. However, You could not pot the pink from the blue and that would be a foul.

    Hello Mr .Barry
    Since I played Snooker 4 yrs ago I was taught the long back swing and the drive t through with elbow drop
    But my cue level was bit high now I can get it lower but having a problem fear of hitting table wood when drop-in from low level (one chalk or finger over wood cushion
    And I wonder always if the higher level(two fingers or chalks and the shoveling while dropping elbow would be better for the drive
    As a not I don't miscue with it but some colleagues warn it could create a swerve
    I noticed a quest about Ronnie and shoveling and I noticed u didn't answer in public answers if am right something's are exceptional but works for some people
    My cue ball feeling and control gets better when I do the shoveling and am having now prob with controlling cue ball if I make it parallel and drop
    Thanks for your time sir
    No one does what you are doing
    By the way I sight better when my cue is a little higher
    And I unfurl as far as possible to get the cue down like Stephen Lee formation
    Fingers touching cue from side as if they are parallel to cue side but they don't leave

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Run Run. There is nothing wrong with a longish back swing, a drive incorporating the elbow drop if you can make it work. It is all a question of degrees. By that I mean how long is the swing? How high is the cue at the back end? How far does it drop? How far does the elbow drop? All these are relevant questions and does modifying any of these elements a little solve any problems for the player. The mistake players and coaches make is that because Ronnie O'Sullivan does this they believe everyone should do it. We are all different and we should find our own way of doing things within the obvious parameters of basics

    Great class, Barry! I'd like some help. I'm having a hard time performing the aim. I watched your videos on the subject, including potting line 1 and 2, but I can not imagine the straight lines. It's very difficult to imagine both the line passing through the center of the pocket and the center of the object ball as the line through which the player must line up. The big challenge is to know the point of intersection between the two lines, none of which is clear to me. Thanks in advance!

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      Gabriel. When you are having trouble visualising the line of the shot it is time to revert back to the ghost ball method. I have recorded a video on the subject, please have a look. Given time and a little patience you will start to recognise the various angles and from there start to recognise the intended line of aim. Please don't rush this, it will take time but remember that selecting the correct line is only half the job done, delivering the cue on that line of aim consistently is the real hard thing to do.If you select the correct line of aim consistently but deliver the cue inconsistently you will still get a high percentage of misses so please continue to work on that cue action. Good luck.

    Hi, can I get some advice on how to get used to the speed of a table? Normally I practice on tables with heavy nap as they are cheaper and more accessible. However, sometimes when I go to competitions with much faster tables, I can't get used to the speed of the table. The tables are so so fast that I kept running out of position. It is so frustrating as I kept overhitting the cue ball and I know if the same shots were played on a slower table, my positions would have been perfect. On the other hand, when I go back to the practice tables after competitions, I underhit the cueball. Is there any way to quickly adapt to the speed of the table? Or it is all down to experiences and adaptability and there is no easy cure? Thank you.

      needmoresleep. I wish I could say that there is a magic wand to solve this but I am afraid it is not so, even in the pro game conditions can vary and some players do struggle to adapt. Experience and adaptability is how you have put it and I cannot come up with a better answer. Just get as much experience as you can, keep hitting that ball as well as you can, use your brain and your snooker skills and it will come.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Aman. The truth is that centre ball is can be used on most occasions but good players can and do use side when necessary. Using side is complicated but often necessary and once you understand what is happening when it is used it is time to experiment with it. It requires understanding and a lot of practise, because it is complicated players tend to miss pots when it is used and that is where solo practise comes in, there is no substitute for a player getting on a table alone and working things out himself.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Rja. It is always a little tricky to pot balls when they are close together, judging the angles is difficult and there is always a tendency to hit the balls a little on the thick side. Players are always a little wary of a push shot and tend to restrict the follow as a result. Try bringing you grip hand further up the cue, this should automatically restrict your follow through and stop you bringing the cue to a halt with a jerk or a snatch. Don't forget the tendency is to hit the ball on the thick side so make an allowance for this.

      Barry Stark Snooker Coach thanks Barry I see that it means you can hit the ball thicker and control the cue ball better. I tried it and yes I see that.
      However I found the ball is just off left you hit the ball straight with a bit of left side it goes in. Other shots it adds complications. Wide angle ones, I find a bit of side on the same side helps.
      I see that actually playing straight and not worrying about side is good advice overall though as it adds too much complication. So now I practise without side except just off center shots!

      xXSAX. The camera will only show where to hit the ball, it is very difficult to play a shot with it on the cue, as I have said we are not on a par with the television studios in terms of equipment yet. To play a draw back shot just hit the ball as low as you can, make sure you have chalked your cue and get through that ball. Getting the ball to screw back is easy, controlling the amount is the hard part. However, I will try to do the shot with the camera in place when the opportunity arises.

    Why Americans call it English cause side spin was used a lot in Snookers and Billiards three rail ( English Pool some call it ) so we started calling it English in the ball.
    American pool started as straight pool. 8 ball and 9 ball were invented later.
