    I posted a comment/question on another video about a shot I have trouble with in American 8 ball and this is the other shot I needed work on (the other being pocketing a ball sitting deep in the center of the pocket from a long distance without scratching) and I believe this will absolutely help!!
    I do avoid it when possible but it does happen frequently and veering towards the rail is usually the exact result. Gonna have to give this one a practice as well as figure out the first shot I had a question about.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Procras. Please have a look at my video on the ghost ball, the ball does tend to veer towards the cushion because of the slight squeeze effect, the answer is to strike thinner than you originally thought or play with a little side to eliminate the squeeze. Most snooker players(not all) would prefer to play with the side, as always experimentation and practise is the answer.

      Craig. May I suggest you try to keep the game as simply as possible. Look at where and how you hold the cue, these elements are so vital. Then try to establish a routine that puts the cue on line, then try to waggle/feather the cue keeping it straight and level, finally deliver the cue in that same straight level line. If you can do that consistently progress is just around the corner. Good luck.

    I have noticed that side effect helps with these types of shots, thanks for reinforcing and clarifying it more, the ghost ball and the line is what i use to aim but at larger angles i tend to look at the side of the white ball if it hits the side of the other ball, sometimes i try to barely it the other ball with the white and i miss.

    I've heard another theory about why you would use a little right hand side (English) as you did in your demonstration. When the cue ball collides with the object ball at a 30 to 45 degree angle as in your demonstration, the friction between the cue ball and the object ball will tend to throw or push the object ball to the right, in the direction of the tangent line as you have suggested. The opposite will occur when cutting to the left. But if you add a little right hand side when cutting to the left, the cue ball will tend to roll off the object reducing or eliminating the friction between the two balls and thus eliminating the throw effect. Clean, polished balls, without chalk marks will also reduce the throw effect.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Jack. The effect of friction is always slightly more when the cue ball is spinning into the body of the object ball rather that spinning away from the body of the object ball.

      @@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Mr. Stark, thanks so much for your reply. Your videos are the best on the Internet. I watch them all and I don't play snooker any more. Now I play 8-Ball and 9-Ball but it seems your advice is equally applicable to all pool games.
      With regard to the cue ball "spinning away" from the object ball, does that mean that in your video example, using a little right side when cutting to the left causes spinning away from the object ball and therefore the friction has less effect on the object ball than if you applied left side?

  • @oldbloke135

    THE most important thing I realized about these shots a few years ago is not to take them on! If you miss the pot (and even for a player as good as Barry it's a 50% shot) you are almost guaranteed to leave your opponent an easy pot, look where the white ends up. It is easy to play safe instead and leave the white "glued" to the top cushion. There's only one big break prize in our league and I'll never win it anyway!

      The camera angle made it look a lot more than it was. Generally don't want more than half a tip of right hand side for this shot. So where the right edge of your ferrule normally points to when you strike the cue ball in the centre - aim the middle of your tip there for this shot.

    The use of the "Ghost balling" method and picturing the line the object ball will (hopefully) take are definitely useful techniques. The suggested applicaction of "running' side to 'assist' the pot however seems to just be making the pot more difficult as 'guessing' the amount of throw (which will include pace, nap and humidity (I play in Australia)) seems to be making a difficult process more so. Just my opinion.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Jonathan. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and you are right in the belief that some players prefer to play plain ball rather than use the side indicated in the video but there is no doubt that on cut shots there is a slight element of squeeze off the true aiming line, this can be alleviated by aiming a little thinner or by the use of side, as I have often said, " Euclid breaks down at this game" the choice is the players.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому +1

      Sandeep. First and foremost be very careful and treat the shot with the ultimate respect. Along the black cushion the balls should tend to hug the cushion a little because of the nap of the cloth. At the baulk end the nap tends to cause the balls to come away from the cushion so the shot is a little more difficult. Play them both with centre ball striking.

    Dear Barry,
    It's been a long time I wrote to you or I had to take any suggestions. I want to congratulate you on Kyren's performance in the wsc18. He has improved a lot and the credit equally goes to you as well.
    I have a very basic query that how to make sure on every shot, when we do a pre shot routine, that a player is on the line of the shot EVERYTIME?
    This problem (in my game) has ruined the consistency and the break ends prematurely.
    Will be very helpful in improving my (and for that matter everyone's) game.
    Thanks and regards

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Yogesh. The margins of errors are very small at this game, of course it is important to be on the right line but experience has taught me that the main reason players miss is not because they are off line, but because they are not delivering the cue where they are aiming consistently. Check your alignment on the baulk line, get that right and work on a routine that puts it on that line every time. Now take that alignment routine to every shot and if you miss you will know that you have either selected the wrong angle or that you have not delivered the cue correctly.

      Daragh. One of my videos explains the squeeze better that I can using just words alone, please have a look. There is no need for a tip clamp if you are using super glue, just press down for a few seconds and it will be stuck. If you use impact adhesive it is best to use a tip clamp and I just leave it overnight, although that is probably a little excessive.

    The thing is, when playing with side like that you're not aiming at the actual line of the shot, you have to compensate for the varying amount of side, the distance between cueball and object ball and the way the table plays. This is the thing I struggle with, however much I practice that kind of heavily angled shot.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Austin. Please don't believe you are the only one that struggles with side, we all do. My real advice is to use it sparingly, try to improve your cue ball strike by hitting it as smooth as possible, by doing that you will make using side slightly easier.

    Do you have to get a certain white ball to get good spins cause it seems to me that whenever I try back spin it still goes a touch forward.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      It'z. The cue ball should be the same size and weight as the rest of the balls. If you are having trouble applying back spin it is more than likely that your technique is letting you down. Chalk your cue, strike low, keep the cue parallel, relax and get through that ball, it will come back. Please don't try to run before you can walk, keep the balls fairly close together, "about 12 inches apart" Don't even aim to pot a ball initially, just aim for a cushion and this will allow you to place all your concentration into screwing the ball back. You can progress to potting the object ball and screwing for position later.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach

      Shezad. Visualisation and diaphragmatic breathing always help a player to relax. A sound pre- shot routine gives the player confidence, the breathing slows the heart rate down when done correctly but it does require a little practise.

    I want to ask you why you think looking away after seeing the object ball defies the purpose? I look away sometimes and while im looking away im visualizing the angle so that when i look back at the object ball i can see the angle again with fresh vision, definitely it helps more to maintain vision while moving but is it ALWAYS the case ? Thank you

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Yasser. There is no doubt that everyone is different and although I find that most players benefit from not looking away, if you look away sometimes but not others and your game is sound then please carry on. I must say though that I favour a set routine particularly on blind pocket shots and most players will benefit from this.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Shane. It is often possible to rotate the cue so that any bend is not visible when you are down on the shot. My own cue has a slight bend in it which I have got used to and does not bother me. Having said that, if you are continually using different cues your progress will be thwarted perhaps it is time to invest in one of your own.

      jadonx. The shot was played without any consideration as to where the cue ball was going. You could just hit the object ball finer but the video just showed how side can and does kick the object ball reducing the need to hit the ball finer which can be very difficult for some players.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  Рік тому +1

      Raj. This is probably due to gripping the cue too tight, try to feel where the cue is in the 'V' throughout the action, trying to maintain the slight pressure ( I use that term loosely) centrally in the 'V'. The 'V' is the web of flesh between the thumb and forefinger.

    Barry, damn I'm so confused. I thought that using right hand (outside) English kicked the ball _towards_ the rail not away from it. For example, if I do a straight shot and use right hand English, then it seems to kick the ball to the right. Why would it kick to the left for a wide cut?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 роки тому

      Dhiraj. Try to think about the cue ball spinning in an anti clockwise direction (right hand side) as it hits the object ball. There is a certain amount of friction between the two balls so in the example shown the object ball gets marginally kicked away from the top cushion.

  • @NoosaHeads
    @NoosaHeads 5 років тому +3

    But if I put right hand side on that example shot, it is going to push the cue ball to the left, which will push the object ball into the cushion, before it gets to the pocket.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому +4

      Ian. Played at the right speed with the right amount of side the push of the cue ball to the left will be minimal, granted there is always an element of assessment to be made but that is where practise comes in. Try to hit the ball smoothly with varying degrees of side and note the different reactions of cue ball and object ball.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Armin. You are obviously putting right hand side on the cue ball. This could be that you are hitting the cue ball on the right or that you are cueing across the ball or both. First of all check that you are cueing straight on the baulk line, if that is okay check that you are hitting the centre of the cue ball. To do this have a look at my video which advocates using a loop bridge to look down on the cue ball, looking down on the cue ball and cue tip is the true picture, looking along the cue can give a different and sometimes a false picture, you have to balance the two.

      Krvy. Most professionals don't do this but I admit a few do. This is just their way of trying to relax, or it is just a nervous little habit that they have developed over the years. We all have our own little idiosyncrasies but this is one that should not be copied.

    Hi Barry. Can you make a video on how to make sure, when you go down to the table to play your shot, not to have any doubts on where the cue ball needs to contact the object ball in order to pot successfully please?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Stephane. Aiming correctly is one thing and of course that is important, but what is often forgot is the fact that delivering the cue consistently where you are aiming is far more difficult. If you set up a straight shot you will find that even if an amateur is aiming correctly he will often record a high percentage of misses, that is simply because he has not delivered the cue where he is aiming. It is exactly the same with shots that are not straight, aiming is generally not the problem, delivering the cue where the player is aiming is the biggest problem and that is down to a poor cue action. Work on that cue action and you will soon find that the rest will fall into place.

    • @MoiFidodido1966
      @MoiFidodido1966 6 років тому

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 років тому

      Shahzadi. In the example shown most players would play this with right hand side visualising the object ball maintaining the slight distance away from the cushion. If the object ball was touching the cushion and you were approaching from the angle shown left hand side would be used, this tends to increase the target area and makes the shot slightly easier because of it.

    hello sir i am 9 years old.I have a question ,that when i was playing in a club i came along for a draw shot .i knew to play it at the bottom and with good force,but when i played the shot it didnt screw back even a inch.it just stopped (like a stun shot)Please mr Stark tell me that what should i do ??And thanks for your awesome videos.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      faraz. Obviously the greater the distance between the two balls then the more force is needed to stop any back spin from dissipating before the cue ball hits the object ball. But generally speaking it is technique not power that gets the cue ball to screw back. Start with the balls fairly close together, hit the cue ball at the bottom, get through the ball and it will come back. The main reasons that the ball doesn't come back is because players don't hit the ball where they think they are hitting it, strike low and keep the cue parallel. Don't be too ambitious to start with, remember that you are a beginner, be patient, practise a lot and it will come. Good luck.

      daud Shahid I assume you've just worded this incorrectly and you're not looking for advice on how to miss balls aha. The simple answer, practice, I've made a 72 break but haven't been playing snooker for long at all but I still miss my fair share of balls by overcutting them, will come with time, another good way is to go and check the potting angle before you play the shot, this can help at times

  • @trannel73
    @trannel73 6 років тому

    One of our club members told me once, that pros do play these kind of shots with side, because the object ball have side effect in the inside of the pocket.
    Isn’t this nonsense? Can I transfer the side effect of the queue ball to the object ball? I understand, that I can achieve no more than a small change (kick) in the contact/change of the shot angle. What do you think?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Lennart. There is a small amount of side transferred to the object ball but this very quickly dissipates and will have no beneficial effect by helping the object ball into the pocket off the jaws of the pocket. The benefit comes from changing the angle the object ball takes after contact with the cue ball.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому

      Nirmal. A video will not show the degree of pressure used on the grip, it will only show the formation of the grip. Be aware of what part of the hand is touching and holding the cue but feel as though you are just cradling it rather than gripping it. Some players have a firmer grip that others, just experiment until you find the amount of pressure that suits you.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 років тому +1

      Nirmal. If your hand is too close to the cue ball it will restrict the back swing, too far away and you will tend to lose control of the cue. I find that the ideal position for most shots is between 10 and 11 inches. Please have a look at my video which highlights this.
