You forgot to tell us all which FCC Part 95 GMRS radios we SHOULD buy.. You know, the ones that are made in the United States. You also forgot to tell us which Made In The USA device you typed your genius comment on.

Just finally ordered this radio with the stubby smiley antenna, jumper cable and mic so I can set it up for vehicle use or HT use. The notarubicon code still works. Took off $13 and some change. Very excited to receive it. Looking forward to listening to the emergency vehicles that drive past my house all the time. Also, now I can give my daughter my Baofeng UV9G so her and my son don't fight over his.

True dual receive! Nice. Don't underestimate being able to receive Walmart! That kind of thing is great for finding the shortest line around Christmas. I've caught lines before they even opened. It's also fun to listen to Burger King well you wait in line some days. They have hilarious conversations when they aren't busy.

Watched many of your videos just for the entertainment value. I don't care squat about GMRS, but I did buy this unit from your favorite store and used your discount. Not sure when I will get whatever it is I bought but I'll enjoy watching you explain how I might use whatever it is I bought.. I hear ya! China went dark for several weeks when I was already struggling to keep up with the UV9G PRO orders. They are flowing nicely again now though (knock on pork buns), so I will be cranking them out as quickly as possible... going to still take a while though.

@NotaRubicon Productions well thanks to you I learned alot about hams in the last 3 weeks. A whole lot about Baufengs. My local club charges $15.00 to take the test, which I just got my ticket tonight and they give you a free UV-5R upon completing the test. No sad hams here. Just wanted to say thanks for educating me and ive been studying for the general test and am passing the current question pool at 100% pass on the last 30 test i've taken. will be testing for general within the week.

Hi Randy. Thanks for all that you do for the GMRS Community. You're a real Treasure. I purchsed an Wouxun KG-UV9G from Mark, when it first came out. Had to wait my turn to ultimately get the radio, but love it since having received it. I'm not sure I understand the subtle (or not so subtle) differences between the original KG-UV9G and the X version. Any way of listing them ? If not, no worries. Thanks so much for your help. Hey, it's VIP Gil! The product page (.............affliate link above - hehe) has a list of the new features, but briefly: 3 new dark screen modes, priority channel quick-jump feature, "220" Ham band RX, roger beep, a usable, bright flashlight, and stiff knobs. The pre-programming has some slight refinements and some extra railroad channels also, and the default chanels after a RESET are a bit more useful, with NOAA and a few other emergency RX channels (Ham Calls, aviation, marine, SAR, etc.). Thanks for helping me through the GRMS quagmire to find this particular radio. Until finding your channel I thought all GSMR radios were pretty basic and under $35. I ordered several of the UV9GX and some accessories using your link and the discount code still works. The savings more than offset the reasonable shipping charges. Of course they are on backorder yet I shall remain strong and am equal to the task (of waiting) because Better Safe Radio is a small USA-based business. I would bet they are really nice folks too. If my KG-935G dies, that I bought on your recommendation, then this would be a the next one. Unfortunately 2 HT and 1 mobile GMRS more than covers my needs.

Great radio. Great review. The powerful 5.5W output will provide many fars of transmitting pleasure. It will also listen to two frequencies at the same time, a feature it shares with lower power and cheap Chinese models so often seen on UA-cam channels. I only wish I could afford this SHTF wonder. The amber screen so reminds me of my old Zorba CP/M computer I had back in the 80s. It had a small green screen, but the newer one had a larger amber one for fifteen dollars extra. It brings back so many memories. My Zorba could read Kaypro, Osborne, Televideo and other formats. Now they're putting the displays in radios! Sheesh. Sixty-nine miles. Incredible!
For the record, those cheap "dual-watch" radios are usually just that, not True Dual Receive, as in you can literally hear audio from both a the same time (or have one mute when the other is active, or listen to only 1 at a time). As well, you can use the Priority Scan feature, which uses the second receiver to monitor the Priority Channel in the background (every second), except when scanning. So you can actually listen to 2 different freqs/channels, AND also have a dual-watch going on one of the receiver. It's fairly unique in that way. :) I'm glad you like the screens. I'm partially color-blind so I was not sure how well the colors would translate to people with better eyes. :)
Wouxun 9 series of HT radios (KG-UV9G/T/D/P) seem to all be very similar in firmware design, however their manuals do not describe the menu options very well (compared to a BTECH manual, for instance). I wish there was more resources out there (youtube videos or web documents) that walk through some better descriptions of these radio features.
For instance, one of the first menu options is powersave mode, that is described as the receiver duty cycle 100ms .... How about some explanation about what is actually going on with the receiver and how these different modes affect practical usage? The manuals explain very little about many features.
Sweet video man. Love all the HT's in the background. I love my UV9G but this one has some extra features like red letters for night use among others. I might have to buy another one. Seems like Wouxun has caught the US market by storm and Kenwood and the others has not.

Thank you for the great videos and commentaries on all the products you review. I was so intrigued by this video of the new and improved Wouxun KG-UV9GX that I purchased 2 of these radios. Though they are currently 15+ weeks backlogged I am eagerly awaiting their arrival. Both my wife and myself are licensed in both GMRS and HAM radio as each radio designation has a seperate role in our lives. I enjoy the GMRS with its ease of operation and product availability as the HAM devices can get quite costly very quickly. Johnson, there are actually several takeaways one could glean from this video: 1) A new word, which will be added to our lexicon this year, is confuklement; 2) Only a self proclaimed "Simple Boy" like Randy can make videos such as this informative and highly entertaining; 3) Anyone can get their hands on the illustrious FARSOMETER2000; 4) Now you can listen to the WalMart employees and find out why all the merchandise is in the stockroom instead of on the shelves; and finally, 5) (not from the video itself but rather from your comment) it's easy to see why a Sad Ham is called a Sad Ham.

Okay, I am patiently waiting for my backorder. Today. I spent two hours applying for my GRMS License. I eventually managed to pay,but I am not sure I signed the form. I guess I will hear back in a day or two. My daughter doesn't believe I put my name on a Government list. I love all the videos that called it a ten minute process.

I like the form factor of the unit. Some models do not fit nicely into a radio pouch such as those that can attach via MOLLE/PALS. My two current GMRS units are aging. I found this channel searching for this very topic. Great content. Subscribed!
It is quite slim, even with the large battery. For the shirt-pocket radio nerds (nope, not me, never), there's the original 2000 mAh battery also, which is even slimmer/lighter, and still provides pretty decent run-time.

I wish the battery was swappable with the KG-905/935G. I would absolutely order one if I could use the same charger and spares.
You could get a UV9G PRO and UV9GX and swap all day long. Or get a 916 GMRS and at least share the same charger (different batteries though).

Hello Randy, when I was a kid I was hooked on bearcat scanners. Now I’m 70 and have been watching all your Gmrs UA-cam videos. I just ordered the KG-uv9gx from BSR. It’s back ordered for months. Could you recommend an outdoor antenna that would be good for the Gmrs and also listening to the other seven bands. Thanks very much.

Yes, you can program pretty much everything from the keypad. Not positive about the 8 repeater channels.. Everything from Ch30 up to 999 can be customized.
@@TheNotaRubicon You can actually overwrite ALL of the channels, so beware! You can always perform a Menu RESET though to return the radio to a default 30-channel GMRS config (plus NOAA and a few other basic emergency channels like Aviation, Marine & SAR) in a pinch, but it will blow everything else out.

Just ordered mine. Looks like a great tool to have for me, I work on an airfield so the AM VHF frequencies can be handy to listen in on while still having GMRS on hand as well. This is going to be my first non-baofeng radio, so I will have a lot to learn. It says estimated shipping is 6-10 weeks. Are they holding to those numbers well to your knowledge?

I just bought this radio. It has great range. I new to GMRS and it was better than I expected. I’m still figuring out how to fully use it. The Japanese has the Chinese beat hands down on user manuals.

I have the PRO model of this one, great radio but did they fix the battery drain issue? Mine will slowly lose power if the battery is installed even if left off. After about 60 days its almost totally drained. Even my Boofwang uv9g units don't do that
Nope, same issue, but if you're storing a radio for more than 30 days, just pull the battery off, which is a good practice to protect any radio (in case a battery ever swells, which can happen on rare occassion).
Great review of what appears to be a great SHTF radio. But the question I always ask when contemplating a new radio: "Is it CHIRP supported?" No? No sale...
better yet is it NotaRubicon certified?

Not officially, but neither was the UV9G PRO and UV9P, and they seem to work fine with the old UV9D (PLUS) module. This radio does have one extra menu feature though, so it's not clear if that will cause any read/write problems. Use at your own risk - I'm sure some brave schmuck with try it out for the rest of us soon enough. ;) (no, not me, I'm all about RT Systems)
