I will tell you that I was driving a few hours away going to visit relatives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I was passing through Waynesboro and did a radio check on a repeater that is situated up on a mountain nearby. I got to talk to a nice feller named Glen who was about 40 miles up the road who sits around monitoring the repeater all day.

Note for anyone looking at this radio: with the belt clip, you have a little piece that screws in atop a slotted bit on the radio. They DO NOT give you a longer screw, the stock one only gets one thread in. It will strip out, so you need to source a slightly longer screw for it. Just a heads up

My Midland MXT275 came today and my new GMRS callsign came last week only 4 days after applying, so it looks like this could be my next handheld for range testing out to all of our Camp Host sites. I installed a 1/2~ fiberglass GMRS antenna on the ladder of our RV with a 10' PVC extension under it so we can get a better line of sight condition. We are at the valley bottom and you can see the tops of the foothills from here where the roads enter the canyons between the 14K' peaks, so true line of sight depends on how many twists the canyons have until you get to the campgrounds, but looking forward to testing for communications range with my boss (wife) and our other maintenance guy to our Host sites. The MXT275 is more likely to be powered inside the RVs than higher-powered radios due to the limitations of the 12-volt charging ports built-in into the RVs. However, our Hosts also have the need to communicate from their golf carts which is where the Baofeng would come in. Thanks for the review and the affiliate link.

    Another great video Randy.
Chris, thank you for being the real star of this operation.
For those who prefer to look ultra sexxy with the speaker mic, this is a good choice.
We use UV9Rs for fire fighter training.
This mic has stood up to several hundred degree temps, extremely wet and dirty usage.
Of the 10 mics I have only one has any damage. And that is just to the TX button cover, still works.
These RSMs from Abbree are legit.
Our UV9rs which look very similar to this radio have stood up to the same abuse with no failures.
This is a rugged radio for your adventuring, doomsday prepping, or, playing around in a burning building.

Great video (as always). Thanks for going to the trouble of making them. Having just gotten into the world of YT video production, I can attest that it takes a lot of time and energy.
As for the antenna... Every. Single. ABREE antenna packaging. LOL. A note on those antennas: While they DO work better than factory and a lot of 'upgraded whip' (aka 771ishness) they don't like to take any impact/stress on the 'folded edge'. The way they mounted the SMA connector is weak and it'll separate/break it right off. IMO it's an outstanding antenna to have, but it's better to carry that folded up in your pack if you're out and about and put it on if you need it; just keeping the normal antenna on the radio most of the time will save you frustration and a few bucks while still being plenty capable for most operations/requirements.
Does this use the typical battery style that the UV-5R (and variants) use?
Also, did you try to, ummm... 'unlock' transmit function... using the new UV-5R 3-button cheat hackiness?

Hi Randy - I'm new to your channel. Love the content. You are my kind of people! I saw in a prior video of handhelds you use the uv-9g one of them. I'm just curious if there is any reason to get the uv-9g over the GMRS-9r (from your opinion). Not asking you to decide for me, but I'm new to GMRS and looking for some units for me and the fam. Other than not having usbc charging, I like the ip67 rating and am considering these. Would love to know if you were buying today, would you stick with uv-9g or go with GMRS-9r ... and why if you don't mind sharing. Thanks.

I can't speak for the radio Randy is reviewing, but I have been using my Kg-s88 for about two weeks now. I like the orange option as I use this for hiking and kayaking. Plus I like the internal charge port and the overall size, smaller than my 935. With my 88 i can hit a repeater about 40 ish miles away when standing outside. Lots of hilly terrain and even with the shorter antenna, they said I was coming in with a strong signal. Happy shopping and good luck buying just one. I have been programmed with, "Affiliate link below," and then a new radio shows up at my door, lol. Congrats on getting into GMRS.

This is by design, as with all GMRS radios, and no way around it.

I really like your content, thank you!
I'm sure you are super busy but I'm asking for your opinion on how this 9R stacks up against UV-9G? I would really appreciate it. Want to get an entry level radio and I've got $60. Specifically looking for a water proof/highly water resistant and rugged (if that's not asking too much for $60). For emergencies, camping, hiking, fishing etc. Seems like a no brainer.

Randy, maybe you could get the actual Bevis & Butthead artist to do a cartoon interpretation of you and one entire review episode !🤣

Anyone have any luck getting Channel 15 to Tx? For some reason ABBREE ships them with 462.550 locked out.

Which radio would you choose the UV-9G or the GMRS-9R. I'd like to order some from your store. If, you have another GMRS you recommend please opine.

Ok, I’m pulling my hair out and it is getting thin! Why can’t I program my local repeaters in the DYI channels on the GMRS-9R? Struggling here. Yes I have read the manual! Help anyone!

Just an FYI... I just got the GMRS-9R yesterday. Seems like it has the same problem that the UV-9G had where it picks up the NOAA channels while scanning (thereby stopping to listen during every loop). I'm not sure I got the right manual in the box, but it doesn't seem to mention any way around this. There was a firmware fix for the UV-0G released last fall to fix the issue. Also, I don't see any mention of Wx Alerts in the manual or the menus. If you don't need Wx or scan, I guess it's not a problem, but I would like to be able to scan for use in the kayak...
Edit - Also, I'm not sure if the Weather Alert function is working. Again, no mention of it in the manual, and I don't see any settings for it in the menus. This is also a key feature for me. Other radios I own have menu options to enable or disable the feature. I sent these questions to Abbree and will update here if/when I hear back from them.

I'm not sure how to do it manually, but you can use CHIRP programming software(free) and the appropriate programming cable to set those channels to "skip" during scanning.

Thank you for your video. Did you download the software for this radio to your PC. Did you have any issues with channel 15? Thank you.
