The 1UZ starter replacement may be a "10 hour book job" but it's really only a 2 hour job in most shops. It's a luxury tax that mechanics like to put on the job because it's just an annoying ordeal and if you have literally no idea what you're doing and have never touched a 1UZ before I suppose it could potentially take you 10 hours to take it completely apart by following the manual and reassemble it. I'd say any competent mechanic would be able to do the job in 2-3 hours with little to no experience on the 1UZ platform and an experienced 1UZ tech can do the entire job in 45mins to 1.5 hours.

Love my 06 Toyota Tundra. Things been awesome. I do have the leaking rear end. Had to replace water pump and timing belt at 200k. 235k now and still going strong
I bought my dad's 01 tundra about 5 years ago after the rear end was leaking and he couldn't get it to seal. I finally fixed mine and it's been solid for just about 3 years. JB weld and epoxy does not work long term. I sanded down the rear end with a wire wheel after draining all the fluid out of it. I then sprayed it with brake cleaner and let it dry... Then I took a torch to the rear cover and got it niiiice and hot to smoke off the remaining oil sitting on the back of the cover ( so it doesn't ruin the next step) then I slathered the entire back of the rear end with permatex ultra grey gasket maker (I think the ultra black will work too, but they didn't have any) and let it cure for a few days before re adding lube. This has been good for going onto it's 3rd year. The other repair attempts didn't last a year. You can also have someone cut off and weld on a new rear cover, but this is cheaper and DIY friendly. proper prep is the key to a lasting repair, ANY smidgen of oil remaining on that cover will lead to your repair failing, Expecially if oil leaks out while you apply sealant and mix it around into the sealant as you apply it, so that's why I did the drain and torch method. 302k miles and still going. still got the stock clutch too, haha!
So, in a nutshell, the individuals looking at Toyota trucks are more educated and discerning than the individuals looking at Ford and Chevy trucks. Which causes you to have to address issues instead of simply selling the vehicle quickly. That is what you more or less took forever to say.
Daily a 07 taco 2.7 5 speed. no belt, frame recall when I got it plan to run this thing for years. Working on and selling used Toyota’s here and there have always worked well for me 👌🏻
More Alyssa! Nice to see her back in your videos. Listen to German...not all of your inventory needs to come from the auctions. The issues that frustrate you have more to do with the buyer and price point than the manufacturer...people want cheap A to B vehicles...that’s the market Toyota and Honda traditionally caters to. Oh and more Alyssa pls :)
Dude.....Toyota is the vehicle to buy..it has no comparison at all. Its the best machine 4 all purposes...its motors r the best in the market. A Toyota with 400k miles is as good as a brand new GMC😂😂😂
Great video; I love hearing different points of view. However, I have to disagree with you. Most Toyotas last forever, which is why they sell so well and at such a high price. Only the few problematic ones will go to auction. Also, how can you hold Toyota responsible for the Takata Airbag recall? It's primarily the responsibility of the airbags' manufacturer (Takata, not Toyota).
You are 100% correct. Those airbags were in many vehicles from Honda to Ferrari and everything in between. At least Toyota did the right thing and recalled the vehicles, unlike Ford and their shoddy Firestone tires on their "Explorer" suv. Anyone else remember that fiasco?
@@alastair4451 Ha, even better. I did a water pump in a Ford 3.5l in 5 hours. Book time is 11, WTF? I can't see it taking 10 hours to pull an intake and install a starter. BUT I have never seen under the hood of a Lexus whatever so maybe I am missing something???
I’ve done almost everything on those older tundras. We were replacing the air inject systems on those that included removing the intake manifold to replace the valves and the air pump and we were only paid 4.5 hours at the dealer to do that. Not sure where he’s getting 10 hours for a starter. The get the intake off and starter out literally take maybe 30 mins
I got a 2004 Scion xB with 221,000 miles Love that thing also got a 2012 Toyota sienna runs good and then for myself I have a 2003 GMC Denali Quadra steer truck which is kind of unique with a 6.0 it doesn’t like to miss any gas stations 😂
Craig, on minute 8 you show a Mercury that you say it's rotten underneath. People bash the Tundra because it has that one (big) flaw with the frame. I don't know why Toyota did that but if you want to avoid that problem do like me, buy one from a southern state, and as soon as you get it spray it with Fluid Film, repeat every fall as you would do with any other truck and you'll be golden. The timing belt is not an issue, it's a maintenance item and much easier and inexpensive to replace than a timing chain in a Triton or an Ecoboost when the guides let go. These engines go well over 500.000 miles as long as you replace the timing belt and change the oil once in a while. No "HEMI tick", no impacted lifters, no worn timing chain guides, no blown transmissions (unless you overload it, but that's any truck). There's a reason why these Toyotas are worth a ton of money compared to similar trucks from "the big three". Are they perfect? No, but they are 1000 times more reliable than any Chevy, Ford, or Dodge. I'm sorry you got a lemon with that blue one, it looks like it was ran to the ground, someone polished it, sent it to auction and you took the bullet, it happens to the best. Get rid of it and move on! Great content as always!
So I wouldn’t complain on replacing a stater on a vehicle that was 20 plus years old and was probably the first replacement of that part. I still love your videos.
If it takes any of your techs a full 10 hours to do a starter on either of those vehicles then you need a new tech. Period. Those are book hours not actual hours. JS
@@rickhibdon11 interesting, looks like you are right. My dad has had quite a few caddies, must have never needed a starter or I would have heard about that one.
Rick Hibdon who buys those 😂🤣🤷♂️. Yuck. My Chevy truck has 280,000 miles and has never had any major issues and I’ve had it 20 years. Been in shop maybe half dozen times and worst thing was the fuel pump. Actually all the times t was in the shop was for fuel issues. Injectors replaced at 180k, fuel pump around 200k. And fuel oxygen sensor at around 180k when the injectors went because of a leak allowing dirt. Drive it from Oregon to Alaska that year. And once had the ujoint go. 280k miles and those were the only times it needed anything fixed. Beside an alternator or battery which I did myself. Alternator took me 15 minutes. Dealership was gonna charge me 1.5 hours labor. I’m not a mechanic by any means but cmon. 1.5 hours for an easy 15 minute job by a non professional. Funny I did it twice that week because the rebuilt one went out days later as it was faulty when they tested it. Returned it and got another one with lifetime warranty and put it in. So far so good that was years ago.
Craig never shuts up long enough to let someone else talk, and then usually cuts them off, or acts dismissive and keeps going with his rant. Can't tell if he's trying t o keep the video short or just likes the sound of his own voice. It's possible someone else may have an opinion, especially German, that viewers enjoy. Laid back versus ADD rapid-chatter.
Toyota's are the best! Part of the reason they hold their value is because they limit the quantity produced unlike Chevy and Ford. Plus they keep model year and body styles longer (often 10 years). This helps older models stay fresh and current looking.
I love toyota and honda I work on a lot of them easiest out of all other car manufacturers to fix...who ever is in charge of designing of cars at toyota and honda is a genius they make my job easier to fix them
Constructive criticism, I’m here because I like your content. I’ve noticed you frequently put the same thing in the video multiple times. Rewatch them before you post and you can probably cut down video time
I'm still driving my 07 dodge truck that I bought new still runs great with 147k miles . The starter went out at 95k miles , and the water pump failed at 110k . The starter only cost me 129 bucks , the water pump 50.00 , and both parts were stupid easy to replace .
I'm so glad that this small dealer can't seem to figure out how easy it is to make bank on Toyota truck/suvs. Every time I flip the 1st Gen Sequoia, I make 2X the money.
Love my Toyota's. You make valid points on the rust issue, but show me a vehicle that doesn't rust in states that dump tons of salt. The 4.7L is documented and known to run over 1 million miles with basic maintenance, and yes, that includes the 100k service of the timing belt. Fluid Film the frame, always do an underbody wash throughout the winter, and in the end, you get what you pay for. I've been burnt by every "domestic" manufacturer failing to stand behind their product. Toyota is just the opposite. They've earned me as a customer for life.
I couldn’t agree more. The high rate of exporting used Toyota’s has driven the market ridiculously high (try and find an FJ cruiser) the frames disintegrate in rust belt areas - the recall is great and all but it’s ridiculous. In my opinion and experience, inexpensive Honda’s and Toyota’s (sub 3k) are risky buys - mainly because they have been owned by someone who has been led to believe they require no maintenance - and they drive them into the ground until there is so much deferred maintenance and issues that the cars are effectively junk.
Takata airbags were in a TON of different cars, not just Toyota. Mine was replaced without issue. Buy Rav4 and corolla/matrix/vibe because they are built in Canada. Sienna's and Camry's will also sell well. Yes they are $$ but people buy them because the are cheap in the long run and you can add on $1G to the sale price without issue.
Craig, I totally get you point of view as a dealer with regard to Toyota, tough to source and make any real profit. I have no idea how you get the $$ you do for Chevy trucks and SUVs with the kind of mileage you get them at (they are notoriously the most unreliable vehicles sold in the US). You are quite the salesman! Love the channel!
The Toyota frames were manufactured by Dana for Toyota. In 2010 Dana sold the “Frame Division “ to Metalsa Manufacturing from Mexico. Toyota sued Dana for the bad frames and won a $25 million dollar settlement.
That Lexus LS 400 was the flag ship. Lexus wanted to compete with the Germans and designed the car with a high budget. Unfortunately I don't think the quality and design are as good in the later Lexus designs.
In Puerto Rico we do not have issues with the frames since we live in a tropical weather. The issue with the takata air bag is not a only relates to Toyota. Hondas, Nissan ... has same issue.
From my experience Subaru buyers tend to be extremely analytical and detail oriented with their inspection of their cars and sometimes even knew more than I did selling all makes and models at a used car dealership. Also if there was no service records or Carfax documentation of the t-belt and water pump being replaced on Subarus, depending on the mileage most often we would do that service before listing the car for sale.
Back in the day, you could be blind-folded and pick a good Honda or Toyota, but now all brands have their woes. A consumer has to educate themselves, determine what they need the vehicle to do, expected longetivity, based on their budget. Not very hard.
The newer Toyota trucks have timing chains, rather than timing belts. I had a 2002 Tacoma that has a timing belt. Now, I have a 2013 Tacoma that has a timing chain.
I’ve got a 99 Lexus LX470 and a 01 4Runner. Both still going strong with no issues. Regular maintenance only. They are both daily drivers where the summers are in the 90’s and the winters can get to -20. The most reliable vehicles on the road.
This guy loves to spray bed liner on the frame and undercarriage, attempting to hide corrosion. Worst thing that could be done. Entraps moisture speeding up frame failure. If you ever look at a used vehicle and rubberized undercoating has been applied, including Ziebart, walk away quickly.
I have no problem with toyota machines. They are decent and yeah they have thier flaws but nobody builds a perfect car. The problem I have is with toyota owners and nerds who geek on them. They all think thier old truck with 400,000 miles on it and dents everywhere and same oil from years ago is still worth 7 grand and they are all uppity about how wonderful it is. High miles are high miles, rust is rust, old beaters are old beaters no matter what badge is on the hood. Toyotas are so overvalued it's crazy and people think they don't need the same level of maintenance as other brands which they do.
Here in Maui,Hawaii Toyota's are a gold mine. Check auction value here. We sell used tacomas for over the price of a brand new one. Our only Toyota dealer on the island is completely backordered hence why used market is insane. If you've ever seen comedian Jo Koy's skit about Toyota in Hawaii you'll know what I mean.

First off he say in so many words. “I like selling to Stupid people” not Toyota people.
I absolutely loved Alyssa’s point of view and well thought out responses.

Me too. And her dimples.

Lmfaooo! The comment section never let's me down
I just wish she would wear a seatbelt...
If he sold Tundras they wouldn't come back for a decade !
Lmaoo..
I do love the the Tacoma and camry! Have a 04 camry with with 380,000 miles runs great
They make weld on diff covers to remedy the leaky rust holes.
Or grab a seqouia rear same difference
Why? Because you're a simp? She added nothing to the conversation.
Never let German leave. Pay him handsomely!
I was surprised to see German, he must be a pretty good mechanic
Dude.....Toyota is the vehicle to buy..it has no comparison at all.
Its the best machine 4 all purposes...its motors r the best in the market.
A Toyota with 400k miles is as good as a brand new GMC😂😂😂
Exactly! Think about when you see footage of safaris and the like. It's always a 40 year old land cruiser.
Toyota. Sucks.
Great point re the airbags, it wasn't just Toyota that used them.
He’s always so clean and shaven whenever Alyssa in the video. I don’t blame him she is beautiful.
I was just thinking, "he always looks like a little boy on his first date when she is around" he doesn't act different but he sure looks different.
8 hours for a starter. How many breaks is the mechanic taking?
He said 10 hours lol.
Yes lexus ls starters are a pain..
Loved my Toyota but changing a starter at 215K was a pain. Bolts were seized
The 10 hours to swap a starter is to make up for not having to do anything other than change the oil for the first 214,999 miles :)
My ‘97 Land Cruiser CE edition is the love of my life.
It took me (a complete newbie) 30-45 min to replace the original starter on my 02’ Camry AFTER 200 something thousand miles
Oh he just had a dud that wasn't taken care of lol
I was gonna come in with a Scotty meme but you guys beat me to it
Well, guess Scott and Flying Wheels never gonna be friends.
I had a sequoia with a brand new frame it was one of the best vehicles I've ever had.
So I wouldn’t complain on replacing a stater on a vehicle that was 20 plus years old and was probably the first replacement of that part. I still love your videos.
Maybe try to buy a Tundra made newer than 2007 🤷🏼♂️
As long as they keep replacing the frames we're good to go
I deliver car parts for a living and I was shocked at how many frame replacements I saw being done to what looked like really nice trucks.
If it takes any of your techs a full 10 hours to do a starter on either of those vehicles then you need a new tech. Period. Those are book hours not actual hours. JS
I'll send you a box of tissues for your crying lol
Does German ever get to talk? I'd like to hear his point of view..
PS. GM also put starters under the intakes.
??? Not any GM I've ever had
@@cinder9950 Northstar V8's for one
Out here in California, toyota rules...
Same here in Finland, most trustable and cheapest car to maintain. Probably just hard to sell cars to smart people :D
You mean Commiefornia
Nobody wants to break down on the 10 freeway.
Toyota and Honda
I love my Toyota’s..
Me to
Big thumbs up for this video. I like this channel more and more. This guy is very smart. He has a lot of experience. Great video.
Not so much . He’s wrong on just about everything he said lol
Toyota's are the best! Part of the reason they hold their value is because they limit the quantity produced unlike Chevy and Ford. Plus they keep model year and body styles longer (often 10 years). This helps older models stay fresh and current looking.
Give Rastaman a chance to express his ideas......

He’s obviously never changed the fuel pump on a F body if he thinks chevys are easy to fix.
Good to live in Texas for SO many reasons including no worry about undercarriage rot due to constant road salt!
Yup car's are junk here in Michigan
Sorry too busy staring at Alyssa! What was this video about again? I think I heard Toyota or something like that...
How much do you want for that ls400
I'm so glad that this small dealer can't seem to figure out how easy it is to make bank on Toyota truck/suvs. Every time I flip the 1st Gen Sequoia, I make 2X the money.
Ya I was lucky enough to find an old 4Runner someone let go for $1000 and sold it for $2800 within a week! They’re great for reselling, I agree!
You can buy a weld in replacement rear end cover from Dorman
It’s true as an FJ nerd I’m a perfectionist I don’t want anything that’s blemished.
So a 17-year-old truck driven on salted roads has undercarriage issues? Who would have guessed?
Yet the big 3 trucks aren’t rusted out at the same age
Love my Toyota's. You make valid points on the rust issue, but show me a vehicle that doesn't rust in states that dump tons of salt. The 4.7L is documented and known to run over 1 million miles with basic maintenance, and yes, that includes the 100k service of the timing belt. Fluid Film the frame, always do an underbody wash throughout the winter, and in the end, you get what you pay for. I've been burnt by every "domestic" manufacturer failing to stand behind their product. Toyota is just the opposite. They've earned me as a customer for life.
Toyota replaces frames under warranty. So when you’re searching buy a rusty one only after running the vin through Toyota.
The recall only last so many years
@@carsongwin1816 correct but it never hurts to run it by a Toyota dealer first.
Dealers treat toyotas like freaking gold..200k miles and still asking over 10k..it's really out of control
I worked for Toyota Corp for 5 years and loved them but of course I only had new cars and I live in the south.
Alyssa was great! Did not catch much of the rest of the conversation.
German is like, "Hey! Quit looking at her, I'M the salesperson."
this explains why you never found me a 4runner when i was in the market lol, i ended up buying a silverado instead
Here in California, a mediocre used 15 or 16 year old 4Runner or GX can easily sell for above $10000 on the low end.
Yes, you definitely are simple.
@@longjohn77 lol troll all you want but you know I’m right
The Toyota frames were manufactured by Dana for Toyota. In 2010 Dana sold the “Frame Division “ to Metalsa Manufacturing from Mexico. Toyota sued Dana for the bad frames and won a $25 million dollar settlement.
I bought my first car to flip a couple days ago, hopefully it’ll work out
I wanna do the same thing but haven't done it yet. What car did you buy?
And I hope it will work out for you.
Here, in Italy, a decent car would cost at least 500€+400€ to do the paperworks (and their cost increases as the power gets higher)
That Lexus LS 400 was the flag ship. Lexus wanted to compete with the Germans and designed the car with a high budget. Unfortunately I don't think the quality and design are as good in the later Lexus designs.
We missed Alyssa so much!
In Puerto Rico we do not have issues with the frames since we live in a tropical weather. The issue with the takata air bag is not a only relates to Toyota. Hondas, Nissan ... has same issue.
16:30 Craig, what do you mean about not being able to replace the Takata airbags? I had mine done under recall about 4 years ago
Put the chick in the front seat bro, she's beautiful ❤️❤️❤️.
Back in the day, you could be blind-folded and pick a good Honda or Toyota, but now all brands have their woes. A consumer has to educate themselves, determine what they need the vehicle to do, expected longetivity, based on their budget. Not very hard.
Toyotas are the best other than American trucks for work.
Where do you think they are made
Lmao the tundra is more American than any other "American" manufacturer
No other company takes care of their customers like Toyota does. Every Toyota has been the best vehicle I have owned.
Toyota is the best.👍🏼👌🏻👌🏻 it’s your loss flying wheels 😂
The newer Toyota trucks have timing chains, rather than timing belts. I had a 2002 Tacoma that has a timing belt. Now, I have a 2013 Tacoma that has a timing chain.
Yotas are a way of life
I’ve got a 99 Lexus LX470 and a 01 4Runner. Both still going strong with no issues. Regular maintenance only. They are both daily drivers where the summers are in the 90’s and the winters can get to -20. The most reliable vehicles on the road.
Alyssa needs her own show 😍
Her show how to sell cars
@@joshephand5538 “How to sell the crap Craig buys at auction”
This guy loves to spray bed liner on the frame and undercarriage, attempting to hide corrosion. Worst thing that could be done. Entraps moisture speeding up frame failure. If you ever look at a used vehicle and rubberized undercoating has been applied, including Ziebart, walk away quickly.
wrong, if you use rust converter first or another encapsulater you can go over that with anything.
Agreed rubberized and Ziebart are Terrble . Only real solution is like a chassis saver , fluid film
This is my plan to save a few thousand I’m buying cars that have Toyota engine but not the brand like the Pontiac vibe is my next purchase 1.8l only
I have no problem with toyota machines.
