  • Bruce Dr. Controlled Burn (Shelton, CT) 6/27/24
    SHELTON, CT - On June 27, 2024, the CT State Bomb Squad, along with ATF, CT State Fire Marshal, Shelton Fire Marshal, and the Shelton Fire Department conducted a controlled burn of a home at 7 Bruce Drive. Officials deemed the leveling of the home by fire would be the safest way to mitigate the danger posed by many unburned and unstable fireworks that survived the fire that ran through this same home 5 days earlier on June 22, 2024 during a thunderstorm. Cause of that fire is still under investigation, but firefighters had to deal with massive amounts of fireworks exploding while battling the blaze. Neighbors were notified of the controlled burn event on the 27th and told to shelter in place or evacuate from the morning until about 4pm. The homes to either side of the house were protected by water streams and plywood. The safety checks started at around 7am and the home was lit off at about noon. The Shelton Police Department have mentioned that they expect to make an arrest in this case.

    @colt191169 11 днів тому +15

    So they are worried about the fireworks going off and damaging other properties? The best thing they could come up with is to light them on fire? Makes sense. No body ever thought to soak them in water and then just demo the house like normal?

    • @JimTomatore
      @JimTomatore 10 днів тому +6

      Fireworks are explosives and explosives can still explode, even wet. The act of demolition can easily start a fire, even without fireworks present. The shear volume of fireworks present at this residential location posed an extreme hazard, not only to the people tasked with demolition, but also to the surrounding community. Safe demolition of the house *might* have been possible, but it would have been long and drawn out, leaving a large potential threat to the surrounding houses and any people who wander in.
      Maybe people think fireworks are nothing to worry about, and in small quantities with careful handling that's usually the case. But, when large quantities are present and strict precautions are not taken, they can be just as deadly as military grenades or mortars. A mass detonation of fireworks could send shrapnel flying in every direction, hurting or killing people, even in their homes or vehicles. That's exactly why those massive concrete blocks were placed there, as a shield against flying debris.

      Connecticut had severe weather the days prior to this controlled burn and lightning most likely struck the house causing ignition of the large amounts of fireworks inside but in the initial fire call all of the fireworks didn't go off so they had a deadly situation on their hands because they had unburned fireworks in the structure that were ready to explode but haven't so they had to get rid of them by setting the house on fire again.
