Not really it was just about the Sixers having a better record than the Nuggets as well as Embid having more points than Jokic as well as Jokic's deficiencies on defense that aren't really his fault since he can't increase his athleticism. As well as the Nuggets not deserving the #1 seed due to teams like the Lakers and Warriors faltering in the reg season. That was really the main narrative since the MVP is a regular season award and many believed the Sixers were gonna make a huge playoff push. Embiid had never made the conference finals where Jokic had, they both struggled through missing teammates for one reason or another during seasons where they were both relatively favored to win their conferences. But all of these factors were somehow used to favor Embiid this year- Jokic’s lack of playoff success (ignoring going further in the playoffs than Embiid), media siding with Simmons issues over Murray and Porter injuries.

Embiid’s defense was great, but it wasnt so spectacular that it outshined Giannis’s defense. Jokic definitely was not bad defensively this year. Embiid was the leading scorer, averaging over 30, but is that so much more valuable than guys that averages more rebounds and assists with better records? I think it is extremely cowardly how Embiid chose to sit out against Jokic and also stat pads at the ends of game. The reason i would say Jokic is more deserving is because he does whatever he can not for individual awards or stats, but so his team can win. He shows up, and even when he missed the last few games of the season it was so he could go on a run in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Embiid begs for the ball from Harden at the end of the game to stat pad and cries to the media that he deserves MVP.

The narrative had become so caustic (thanks Perk) that he knew if he won, it would get WORSE. All he wanted to do was win a championship for himself, his teammates, his coaches, team owners and fans. The mvp became a distraction and a potential threat to their focus in the playoffs. He intentionally tanked his mvp chances. The argument here is that the MVP votes should not have been a landslide Victory for Embiid. Giannis and Jokic have been very solid this year, have better or almost equal team standings, bigger impact in team aspect or being the most valuable player on his team (on a loosing record when the main guy is not playing coz that was supposed to be what a MVP should be) and arguably better, in other aspects of the game compared to Embiid. But no, they even made an anti Jokic propaganda and Mark Jackson left out Jokic completely which is for me is blasphemy and super unprofessional. Embiid, Jokic & Giannis this season has been a 1a, 1b, 1c in my opinion and technically and statistically so. In that regards the MVP voting and result shouldn't be so one sided if it has been a fair voting to begin with. I am not bitter for Jokic not winning MVP this year bcoz 1 of these 3 players deserves it in my opinion but the voting should have reflected that they are on the same level this season, a very close race and not favor some1 so much. It is also a flaw in the system of voting for years to not have a standard criteria for voting so it will always be a questioniable award to begin with.

Excellent arguments, well researched and neutrally put across
I’m a biased Nuggets fans and here’s how I scored the MVP races
2021 - Jokic SHOULD have been either 1 or 2 from the beginning but a lot of small market bias overlooked him, it was only after injuries to others he got a fair look and it made it easy
2022 - imo THIS was the most contentious, it would have been VERY easy to use team record and rule Jokic out and ignore the supporting cast, however Embiid’s record wasn’t better by a significant enough margin to matter, had the Sixers won an extra 3-5 games I think that would have sealed it for Embiid. Advanced stats, mainly PER was the ‘hook’ along with 2000-1000-500 for Jokic to win. Any of the 3, Jokic, Embiid, Giannis were equally worthy
2023 - Jokic was so far ahead of the field until January I knew it was going to take a SPECIAL effort from ESPN and co to deprive him, before the season started I knew he’d have a target on his back and I knew he’d either have to average a triple double or be the 1 seed to have a chance, once we were the clear 1 seed and he was flirting with the TD I thought it was secure. The 47 points was enormous but if you’re then going to duck on the other guys floor it should be invalidated. Joel’s main argument was defence and his scoring, personally I don’t rate his scoring as he mainly gets it through foul baiting and flopping a la 2018 James Harden, we see it in the playoffs once the refs stop calling bitch fouls his scoring plummets. As for defence while a great rim protector he ain’t all that at other things, I guess rebounds aren’t a part of defence since Jokic pretty much always has Joel beat in that category.
Imo there was no argument for Embiid over Giannis. Giannis was the 1 seed missing his supporting cast, had great numbers and played great defence (better than Embiid). The sixers had a winning record when Embiid sat. Real valuable player….. Jokic clearly didn’t care and once the media poisoned the well with the race baiting none of the Nuggets players/coaches cared either, it was clear they were focused on the playoffs. Embiid having his annual cry to ESPN was predictable and shows what kind of man he is, find one time Jokic has badmouthed, even on the sly, Embiid. Even after Embiid got exposed in the playoffs Jokic refused to badmouth him and said he deserved it (polite).
Ultimately Jokic rode his luck in 2022 and sat/played half arsed in enough games down the stretch of 2023 to open the door. As a nuggets fan MV3 would have been nice but I can tell you what’s nicer…
The final beautiful irony was Jokic playing pretty good defence throughout the playoffs while the medias golden boy got spammed with pick-n-roll just like they claimed would happen to Jokic. Devine.

It’s so funny how they didn’t want jokic to his 3peat mvp cuz he never made the finals nd doesnt have a ring or how he doesn’t have any post season success like his team wasn’t completely injured the past two years but they give it to the guy who not only can’t get to the finals but can’t even make it pass the second round crazy

And it's such stupid thinking a guy wins 3 times in 2020s so his better then the guys from the 80s it makes no sense

both players set their eyes on different goals. bet jokić never really cared for the MVP at all, especially this 2023 season now that Jamal and MPJ are healthy. he knew it was time to go for the chip.

The important thing is that Jokic has won an NBA finals MVP ... and Perkins has won the coveted DUNCE award for the dumbest sport's analyst of the year.
Vegas has Perkins at a 3 to 1 favorite to win it again next year... with Nick Wright, Mark Jackson, Skip Bayless, and Steven A. Smith also in the mix for next season.

The issue is even though the MVP is a regular season award everyone expects your team to go to the finals unless of course you're in a rebuild

not only that, in the regular season also. It was jokic who should have won the award, he had the better regular season, AND playoff..

averaging 33 and 10 with better defense shouldnt deserve mvp? The second most 30 point games this season and had a 10 game streak with 30 and 50 percent shooting(second in nba history) but its not close?

@@sourtarts17 it doesnt really matter. Jokic numbers were way better than embiid. Embiid numbers are great, but not bettee than jokic. All metrics point out to jokic as having the better regular season.
