We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

I hope that Jessie was able to get a gob of sleep and is feeling a little more life flowing through her system. I think those dragon scales are going to be the bee's knees when you're done. Keep closing up those gaps because the wasps and various flying critters are going to be looking for a cool spot to hunker down.

If you don't cut all of the scales apart, it'll be simpler to attach, much like roofing shingles.

2" of closed-cell foam on the outside sprayed and stucco the outside then painted white will keep the inside of the house vastly cooler during the summer Open the windows at night and there will never be a need for air conditioning. That's what I do at my house.

You should be able to get more dragon scales out of your flashing by alternating them right side up and upside down before cutting them out

Since the doors open inward, you could make about a 2" flap of felt, or something stiff and cloth-like, stapled to the outside of the door frame, all the way around, to cover the gap between the doors and the frame when they're closed.

as a temporary seal for the door... Take a fun noodle (sliced down one side) or pipe insulation, and slip it onto the edges of the door. Paint it and it will last a long time even in the sun.

If you have to cobb on your own again, maybe make double or triple batches of cobb instead? If it starts drying out before you're done, just add a little more water. Probably pretty heavy to haul around, but still probably easier than having to constantly shift gears back and forth like this, too.
Anyway, doorway's looking good, and I'm really excited about the scientific approach to measuring the temperatures in the dome. :D

On the inside of your double doors light was shining through the crack. To help with that, put a 2” x 1/2” length wise of the inside door. Ya, permanently attached to one door. It’s easier for me to draw it out than explain it, but I hope you get the jest of it. It will also keep more cool temperatures in the house.

I don't know how much you pay for your linseed oil but we have been using "vegetable oil" from Walmart at about 9 dollars a gallon. It's actually soybean oil. It works really well when we add a golf ball sized glob of wax to every quart and set it in the Arizona sun to melt in, that really makes it bead water.

Move the trailer next to the dome. Hook up some 12 to 18" ducting and a fan and suck cool air into the trailer.

flashing should go around the building wall itself as a angle edge between the flat roof and the wall. then you can add plastic cement tar to stick the flashing to the wall with also a webbing material which would seal up any holes and stick to the wall and flat roof and flashing with the plastic cement tar.
