Jim/Jess I LOVED THE VISIT! You are so welcome anytime to come back! I have learned so much from you folks over the years. Even back in California I was watching your channel! Hope to see you guys again soon!
You should consider stacking the "shingles" on top of one another so any excess spray paint is not being wasted on wood or cardboard. The overspray paint will actually paint part of the next shingle. Hope that makes sense.
Red dye is way too hard for them to digest. It's an old wives tale that the hummers focus on red liquid. They focus on the "flower" as in the feeder not the liquid.
I love the colors. that wine color is excellent. Jess I am happy how you talked at the beginning; your shyness is improving. you really seem like a pro every time you're on camera. The dancing with your mom, priceless. So proud of you both. You teach me to have patience. Happy Easter, and thank you
I don't know how y'all can keep yourselves from working on finishing the inside. OMG...So cool that you got to spend some time with Don. He's such an awesome human. ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
Love the red but fully agree with changing to a reddish-brown. I love Jesse's sense of art and agree with a pop of color; I have full confidence you'll arrive at the right balance. Somehow getting the right "pop" of color without being garish. As a gentle reminder, red paint tends to sun fade quickly, so what might appear a little extreme initially will soon blend in perfectly. Two of those colors looked like a similar off-white. Would be great (if you haven't found it yet) to get more of an earth yellow tone. It's fun to experiment with the colors to find the right balance. Have fun and play with it.
yes, on earth yellow tone, I thought the same thing and a wave pattern with the color, like the wind is blowing. Oh, Jess and Jim, what to do what to do. Nevertheless, I truly love the red wine color and the ones you showed already, it is going to look amazing when it is done.
A rustly orange would look good with the red and nutmeg. Mixem up .It is going to look so sharp you are both so creative. Look forward to you putting the shingles up
This is simply the type of couple who you just can't help but to fall in love with the gentleman is simply hilarious and I really enjoy watching them they have such a wonderful attitude about living in the Arizona desert
Love the shingles. When you first said dragon scales, I thought they might all be green, and I wondered how that would look with your color scheme. But these multiple earth tones look great.
AGREED it is wonderful to have Jess talking more. Jess YOU are one smart cookie !! You both are a very CUTE couple ! You my man are lucky to have Jess !!
The red is too dark in contrast compared to the soft colors of fossil and beige. If you put it in the mix it can look polka dot because its so strong. Even dark brown is too dark on the gradient scale ...I'd go for a soft coffee with cream or a soft terracotta. That way youde be using an analogous scheme.
You should go with all the different colors you've displayed at the end of video. They are very complimentary to each other and would look cool as multicolored shingles.
I really like the claret red it gives them a “pop” of boldness but not too out there!! I can’t wait to see how they will look it seems like it will be awesome!!
👋 Hi" guys I'm so intrigued! I find off grid living so fascinating, all the possibilities of up cycling everyday items that many people just throw out, with all of the waste we all create it's good too see things repurposed and out of are landfills, 😘 you guys are so cute .
Loved your onscreen kiss - so cute! Love colours but liked your idea about the odd pop of colour like - bright blue 💙? Keep doing what you're doing ,love the new format 👏
I think the red still looks pretty nice! It gives a nice color to contrast with the bright white shingles, and still fits in well with the earthy tones
I like the pop of red coloring. I think it will be very nice and will complement the brighter colors in your window glass. As always you make me smile and laugh “more cow bells”
I think orange blue yellow almost like a beautiful rainbow 🌈 😍 that u see every time it rains u can look at the dome with all the desert smells love the videos
That's an impressive number of home-made shingles and a great way to save $$$$ Thanks Don, cool setup sir. I have met almost all of my neighbors out here. Thanks for sharing and as always keep building 👍
Love the ideas and the teamwork... It's a good idea to heat paint cans in sun to thin the paint, and shake more thoroughly. I find it easier and faster to swirl the marbles around while rotating the cans, one each hand. Regarding the paint application, I suggest much lighter, 2-coat application. Longer lasting, better looking and less likely to flake off after a short period of baking in the sun. I recognize that the painting in this video was for testing colors, but once you go into "mass production", I recommend lining up the shingles like dominoes, so as to overspray onto other shingles, instead of the cardboard / wood base. A cheap primer on front and back might be worth considering. I use canned spray paint on a lot of motorcycle body and engine parts, and I get better results, AND cut my paint cost in half just by following these steps. I hope it helps you as well.
I like the contrast of the red with the earthtones. I really like it and red oxidizes. I love your new editing. I love the guys water fall/pond. I can see you guys doing that.
I like the red. Goes good with dark forest green and dark brown. You could add a blue for the sky and a soft yellow for the spring flowers. More colors from mother nature and you cant go wrong. She knew what she was doing. I am planning on mixing my roof colors too.
Y'all should clearcoat all of those after you paint them, so the blowing sand and dust doesn't strip off your colors overtime like a sandblaster... I would suggest adding natural greens and blues to pay tribute to fauna, sky and water. & even though I'm not a fan of the color red the wine does look nice... Keep up the great work and Have a Beautiful Day...
Go with a terracotta color. I think that will be great with the colors you already have. I love watching you two work together and I love the way ya'll are living. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Have a blessed week.
Keep in mind you will need to repaint these every few years as some of the metals you used are prone to rust. As such a single color would be much easier to reapply. I would pick up a cheap air sprayer rather than using cans, they are much cheaper and better for the environment and will be quicker on big jobs. Color is your choice of corse but I would suggest like a dark sky blue to contrast the earth tones of the house.
I cant wait to see the shingles start to go up. What a creative idea. The colors look great when you put them all together at the end. I could start to see what your going for then.
You might try a paint with "brick" in the name. Also a smattering of dark forest green and something like denim blue. I would keep most of the shingles in the varying tones of beige, but having some shots of color would give it interest. Oh, and another thing, love when Jess talks, we need more of that!
I would have matched the jewel-tone blue and green of the windows, myself. Maybe a pop of purple here and there, which would balance the gold (yellow and purple being complementary).
Oh wow love love love the colours selection yes definitely the odd pop of red. Guys it's looking awesome. Loving it. Fantastic video. Great to see your mum and all the beautiful jewellery.
I love the colors. I think they will be incredible looking on the dome. I showed my son your layout with all the colors and he said 'Oh, it's going to look like a dragon's egg.' Lol. Anyway, it's going to be awesome. 👍😎👍
"As he sees fit" Yup, that what good bois do. Super glad that you know your dog well enough to protect him from his own "Dog-ness," instead of thinking you can try to train it out of him. Really enjoying the process of what you guys are doing out there :)
Jess you are the one to make those decisions. Your art work and colour knowledge is unquestionably not in our pay grade lol. It's going to look amazballs, l awaits with baited breath. 👏👏🤤🤤🤤🤤
A honey mustard or yellow clay color would keep in the warm tones and add a pop, and a mossy or lichen green would go with the other colors too if you want to add a cooler color. Or a dusty teal. A dusty plum would look great too.
I suggest putting a 1X1 piece of wood on your board to hold your shingles and setting you board up right at a slight angle spray paint works better held virtual while spraying.
Jim/Jess I LOVED THE VISIT! You are so welcome anytime to come back! I have learned so much from you folks over the years. Even back in California I was watching your channel! Hope to see you guys again soon!
It was a great visit Don. Thanks for having us.
@@ourselfreliantlife Totally welcome!
🤗😎
Thanks for sharing this experience 🌻🤟🌻
You should consider stacking the "shingles" on top of one another so any excess spray paint is not being wasted on wood or cardboard. The overspray paint will actually paint part of the next shingle. Hope that makes sense.
I'd rather line up some rows of shingles and spray paint all at once. Can even alternate rows upside down to save empty space.
I like that Don even collects the water off his solar panels.
If you noticed that Dons hummingbird feeder has clear feed in it! This is the correct way to make feed without red dye in it! Don knows his stuff 💪
Red dye is way too hard for them to digest. It's an old wives tale that the hummers focus on red liquid. They focus on the "flower" as in the feeder not the liquid.
Stainless welder here- use a wire brush wheel for a drill, clamp the drill to a bench and speed up the process. Great job !
I love the colors. that wine color is excellent. Jess I am happy how you talked at the beginning; your shyness is improving. you really seem like a pro every time you're on camera. The dancing with your mom, priceless. So proud of you both. You teach me to have patience. Happy Easter, and thank you
Jim your girl is coming out of her shell. Loved to hear you soeak in the begining. You got this.
Yes Jess! Great open, hearing your voice.
Jess doing the Jim style intro put a smile on my face.
I don't know how y'all can keep yourselves from working on finishing the inside.
OMG...So cool that you got to spend some time with Don.
He's such an awesome human.
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
What a heartwarming comment. Thanks Laurie!

You guy’ were lucky to have met Don full of knowledge what a gentle soul.
Going to make me tear up timestamp LOL.
Don! So cool. You are all wonderful folks.
Don is a very nice and overall wonderful human! 😊❤️ Glad he finally got to meet Jessica and Crew too.
Nice dancing 💃🏻 Jessica. ❤️😊👍
Two of the hardest working people I know . Love it . Like the different colors cool
That is an impressive amount of work you've done on the shingles. It matches the impressive amount of work you've already done on your home.
Can't wait to see the finished product such incredible artwork!
This is simply the type of couple who you just can't help but to fall in love with the gentleman is simply hilarious and I really enjoy watching them they have such a wonderful attitude about living in the Arizona desert
Love love the intro Jess!!! Great 👍
Mix them all up!! Poping different colors all over the roof!! I LOVE THE RED!!!
Love the pop of wine red! Adds a little zip to all of the sameness of the rest of your surroundings.
You could affix a few different colors to a board or something and put them out in the sun to see how they react.
Love the shingles. When you first said dragon scales, I thought they might all be green, and I wondered how that would look with your color scheme. But these multiple earth tones look great.
Make it bright and festive make it true a Mexicano
AGREED it is wonderful to have Jess talking more. Jess YOU are one smart cookie !! You both are a very CUTE couple ! You my man are lucky to have Jess !!
You have changed roles and it’s great . A nice couple and a very enjoyable channel
Whats up Y'all!! I think the color combination looks AWESOME when they are placed together.
Definitely try multiple coats to get a deeper red.
The red is too dark in contrast compared to the soft colors of fossil and beige. If you put it in the mix it can look polka dot because its so strong. As a Arizonian and you want color pops, maybe Turquoise. It's going to look great!
So cool that you went and visited Don @AffordableDesertLiving! We love him and his channel. 😊
Maybe pull some of the colors in the bottle windows. Good way to tie the whole project together with pops of color 😊
I live off grid in the desert. I've been following you since the spring of 2020. Love you guys and often wish we were friends.
Oh my gawd. My two favorite AZ channels.
I really like the claret red it gives them a “pop” of boldness but not too out there!! I can’t wait to see how they will look it seems like it will be awesome!!
Man... what a lot of work. You two rock... such hard workers building your homestead. ROCK ON.
I think a sky blue and a emerald green for pops of color with the red would look good and maybe a few gold colors.
👋 Hi" guys I'm so intrigued! I find off grid living so fascinating, all the possibilities of up cycling everyday items that many people just throw out, with all of the waste we all create it's good too see things repurposed and out of are landfills, 😘 you guys are so cute .
Way to go on improvising and adapt what you have and can get for free , y'all doing a great job a big thumbs up 👍
Loved your onscreen kiss - so cute! Love colours but liked your idea about the odd pop of colour like - bright blue 💙? Keep doing what you're doing ,love the new format 👏
This will make the project pop for sure 😊
I think the red still looks pretty nice! It gives a nice color to contrast with the bright white shingles, and still fits in well with the earthy tones
YAY getting to hear Jess do the intro! I think sage or olive green might go well. Maybe a burnt orange or brick instead of the claret.
Dude spoils the lady a tad methinks 😂 nice! ❤ Three cheers for this couple. Doing it right🎉
I like the pop of red coloring. I think it will be very nice and will complement the brighter colors in your window glass. As always you make me smile and laugh “more cow bells”
I think orange blue yellow almost like a beautiful rainbow 🌈 😍 that u see every time it rains u can look at the dome with all the desert smells love the videos
Careful the metals you chose for the shingles will react with one another. Braking sown each other faster.
Loved your introduction Jess. You are a natural. love u both….
Omg, thats a lot if work! Can not wait for the inside finish
That's an impressive number of home-made shingles and a great way to save $$$$
Thanks Don, cool setup sir.
I have met almost all of my neighbors out here.
Thanks for sharing and as always keep building 👍
Thanks so much Todd!
Loved Don’s water feature!
@@carrieraupp757 I do too! Thanks so much!
I think the wine color is perfect with the others. Looks Rich!

Absolutely LOVE THIS!!!! 👏
You are excellent doggy parents! I also love your house. ❤️
Congratulations on the over 800 shingles! I like the claret color with the earth tone colors!
Wine color.👍
I like the contrast of the red with the earthtones. I really like it and red oxidizes. I love your new editing. I love the guys water fall/pond. I can see you guys doing that.

I'm loving this project. I hope you didn't get tendonitis with all the cutting!
dip painting is the best means of production when doing large projects on the cheep
The wine color is strong, but could ne a nice color pop in between. I feel like a soft green like sage might work well, too.
Pops of color for shingles = bring in colors that are same as glass bottle windows. Wooot!
To red, on the wine color. Maybe some olive green in there with some blue grey for the sky (pops of color). Anyway, can't wait to see them up.
greens blues with the earth tones 🤟👍👍🌻 Jessica your eyes will see it best (: Artest u got this
I was also thinking the same thing, he is your neighbor indeed. I hope you will enjoy
Go with a terracotta color. I think that will be great with the colors you already have. I love watching you two work together and I love the way ya'll are living. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Have a blessed week.

I like the red (nice pop of color) and idea. Will look like dragon scales. good job. 🌻👍🌻
That red works in the closing shot with the rest of the mix!😎
I think that the wine color is perfect now that its dry. It compliment the earthly colors. Looking gteat.
So awesome your hanging out with Don
I would have matched the jewel-tone blue and green of the windows, myself. Maybe a pop of purple here and there, which would balance the gold (yellow and purple being complementary).
I make bat boxes for my local aerial bug eaters. They are just starting to come out at twilight .
ochre would be very fitting, maybe some black, dark green? Can't wait to see how it comes out!
Cool idea. I like red so means it was my favored one. Would like to see some blue in the mix. Stay safe my friends!
I was going to say "Use the wine sparingly ;-)" but seeing them together it does still seem to fit in to me. Can't wait to see them installed.
Love all the colors of the tin!
Wait when the red is beautiful. I think it matches beautifully
"As he sees fit" Yup, that what good bois do. Super glad that you know your dog well enough to protect him from his own "Dog-ness," instead of thinking you can try to train it out of him.
Really enjoying the process of what you guys are doing out there :)
More earthy brownish red. After seeing them all together the red you have looked good.
Wow 🤩 the multicolored look for the shingles looks so cool 😎
I find Rustoleum rusty metal primer is the perfect earth tone red brown. It holds up well. Try it.
Love the colors! Blessings Abound!
Jess you are the one to make those decisions. Your art work and colour knowledge is unquestionably not in our pay grade lol. It's going to look amazballs, l awaits with baited breath. 👏👏🤤🤤🤤🤤
Love all those colors together. Great job. I would do something like this. Thanks for all you guys do.
I'm really looking forward to the finished project !!!
A honey mustard or yellow clay color would keep in the warm tones and add a pop, and a mossy or lichen green would go with the other colors too if you want to add a cooler color. Or a dusty teal. A dusty plum would look great too.

Matisse has a colour called ‘Red Oxide’ very earthy. Shingles look great❤️✨
Jewel tones intermingled with your earth tones sounds like they would add some pop.
Maybe try a dusty rose, or a mauve, if they have it in spray paint. A sage green would be nice too.
Light purple in the shingles . keep the red and the other colors .. Add just a lilac purple and a pale bright yellow
Those shingles came out looking really good
Nice to se you gays agen 🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠👍👍👍👍!
MR Gerdedal from sweden!
If you staple the sandpaper around a 2x4 scrap block... it makes it easier to use
