After watching for over a year, you both are getting a lot more comfy around the camera and as a person building in the desert of NM you are super inspiring. Keep up the great work!
Hi Jim and Jess. Did anyone say birds? LOL. I have Scaled Quail on my property as well and looks like you had two of them. Also a tip on the doves. Those are Eurasian Collard Doves in the clip. They look a bit like mourning doves but the field marks that help are: Their tail is square with a white tip and not pointed like Mourning doves. They are thicker built and are Sandy colored. Mourning doves are tan. Also they don't have the "beauty marks" as in black spots on the wings like mourning doves as well. The classic black collar shape at the back of the neck is also key. They are pretty unique in that historically they escaped from an aviary in the Bahamas but are originally from India. Flew across the atlantic to Florida. Touched down and established themselves only within the last 15 years or so and now are all over North America including Alaska! They LOVE farms and buildings. Mourning doves usually don't build nests underneath structures like they do. Also their calls are totally different. Mourning doves only do one call. The deep mournful Ooooooah Oooo Ooooo OOoo. Eurasian collard doves sound a lot different. I have both Eurasian and mourning doves at my pond. Hope that helps!
I once painted some galvanized roofing that I use for trailer house skirting. Ole boy told me to spray it with vinegar and it will pit it enough to hold the paint! I sprayed it it better than sanding easy. Never tried it with bare metal but if you ever have to paint galvanized just spray it with white vinegar let her dry feel it it'll be rougher . Primer it without primer! I never tried it on bare metal though! Just tried it on a tin can didn't work
Love the new chickens. I always introduce new birds at night. I give then a day or so with a fence between them and if there is no aggression I put the new chickens on the roost next to the old ones, very quietly and calm. In the morning they wake up and all is normal. They don’t seem to realize that new friends arrived while they slept. Also glass jars don’t work well with plastic waterers, the lip of the glass is too thick. I use glass jars with metal waterers and plastic jars with plastic waterers.
Sharings, caring! Love the sense of community with homesteading, I'm sure those shingles will look awesome in different colours, plant some comfrey, chooks will love it, it's a nitrogen fixer & you can make compost tea with it! Love the vids guys 👍🏕️🇦🇺
Hi guys first video Iv watched in a long while, sorry, I need to catch up, I have had a few mental health issues, anxiety and panic attacks and PTSD but I’m getting better xx love you guys. Your channel actually helps me get over my problems at times thank you so much 🙏
Integrating new chickens into an existing flock is better done at night time after the flock has gone to sleep. When they wake up & are still tired they are not as frisky or tend to be as confrontational towards newcomers as they would be during the day time. Have a great day 😊.
It is nice to see the different types of wild birds that show up at your place. I like the Scaled Quails 7:10 and the Mourning Dove. Pretty cool. I wanted to see the new chickens eat those bugs. I loved growing up with chickens, ducks, turkeys and even peacocks in our backyard. We also had a goat and rabbits, and a de-scented skunk. It was a rescue of sorts I think. I was really little so I don't know. I did not like the geese! They were evil creatures. One day I got a nasty cut on my back from those geese attacking me. Then suddenly we didn't have any geese anymore. We had a nice garden and fruit and nut trees around the house. This was our homestead growing up in Oklahoma City in the early 1940s-80s. I wish I still had that house and animals. I like seeing your home building progress, it makes me a little homesick.
Love your new colors, and it's really great to see Jess doing the intro! For Crew, a good wire bristle dog brush will make a world of difference, but if you want to get serious, try the furminator! It really helped with our one dog whose coat really shedded more than the others... Also, adding fish oil to his food helps as well. What you guys are doing is very inspiring...I'm almost ready to move out there!!!
I love the new intro! Way to go Jess! I wonder if you could use a wire brush on the drill to do the scuffing? Hahaha, I just watched to the end and saw you had the same idea, lol
You guys make me so happy. I always have such a huge smile on my face while I'm watching. I love the colors you guys picked for the shingles. Say hello to the chickens for us! ❤🥰
Can't wait to see the shingles when they are up. Love the colors. The new pilkishes are cool looking. Hope at least one is a hen. I'm thinking it was the mourning dove that was shown at that time.
My additional advice is when doing the sanding to listen to music, helps with repetitive labor, you know what I mean? we wish you luck with all your goals in projects!
Its been 90 deg out side, but in my log cabin 73 deg This is 1 thing i love about a log home, it take 2 weeks for it to warm up or cool down. It will be cold out side and nice and warm inside, Or hot out side and nice and cool inside ~ Most of the time in winter, i run a stove top burner to keep the whole house warm ~ In extreme cold weather i'll run 1 or 2 propane wall heaters That it
You showed a photo of a quail about a week ago. It looked like an Elegant Quail, which was only found in Sonora and Sinaloa forty years ago. But I saw one Elegant Quail last week in Mazatlan and then discovered the Elegant Quail has extended its range into very southern Arizona. So your quail was an Elegant Quail. Jeff
Thanks to Jess for sharing her feelings about appearing on camera and speaking. Your courage, Jess is an example for everyone in similar circumstances or helpful in understanding differences. Our society needs understanding so much. Thank you.
The new birds are so attractive! Have never seen any like those 😊 love the way they have that little poof style on their heads!!! Y’all are amazing to watch with your home updates and of course that Crew is a ham for the camera 🤩 Take care 👍 Shirl K - Texas
A bench grinder with a wire wheel on one side and grinding wheel on the other would have been sweet for that project with the sheer number of pieces to be processed. This Seattle area suburbanite has been really enjoying your channel. Your content is great and your personalities get better the more I view. Kudos🤙🏼
morning dove! scaled quail! remembered... right where to go to find it lol. ya'll got me excited to see these big changes! what a great time to be alive.
Can't wait to see the shingles installed it going to look great. I don't comment often but I had to tell you your video you did on the pecan orchard and the water usage along time ago got me hooked and had to subscribe.
I found that video cool, too. Here in Upstate NY we have the opposite issue with water (too much) and so I'm putting in a LOT of nut trees in my permaculture forest.
So I have been taught the best way to add new chickens is at night. Put on the perch next to the others and they wake up friends! Lol it's worked most of the time! Everything looks great! Wish you could move into that dome before the summer heat hits! Hot in those trailers!
morning dove! scaled quail! Jesse, you should think about fermenting your chicken feed. Its healthy for the chickens and provides a boost to the chicken digestive and immune system. Increases water uptake for the chicken and you need less food per serving.
The temperature difference in the earthbag house is amazing! What books/videos/workshops did you learn about this type of buildings? I also noticed the gabion structures, there is not alot of information about those either. 😀🌱🐢
Jess you seem much happier now that you do one video. Id rather not see you overworked and worn out. Love you talkin more in the beginning, love that music! . You are no longer shy yo me. Jim, you always makes your videos look so easy. I’ve watched you two since day one and your now my number 1 show. Ok enough worship
I lived in CT, wanted to move out west , probably not far from where your at , but inflation happened, so had to find something down south , ended up getting a supper private out in the woods , cheap property in SE NC , , works for now , only 10 mins to the beach , so there's that, lol , cheers ,keep up the good work!
Why not put all the shingles and some gravel into your mixer and let it tumble for a while. Edges will get dull and scuffed surfaces. Wishing you guys a blessed week and a gentle spring season. Peace
Well you guys are troopers when it comes to working, like myself & being an artist / fabricator/ painter . You might consider bulldog adhesive promotor . $20 a can at pep boys & maybe other places, it goes a long ways . Maybe 300 shingles it will cover & it works . I’ve scuffed off-road rims & painted sprayed with bulldog adhesive pro motor& rattle can & works great . From the hippie that’s digging a cave by hand . Call me crazy but not lazy . Keep up your awesome work y’all !
Love the new colors!! And the chickens too. Integrating is tricky.... I have a little girl named Diva and she's in her own 'condo'.... we flunked integration.
I'm putting in a big permiculter base garden now , hand digging it , fun , 21' x 11' to start , sand and clay , so have to dig 12" down , fill with goodness, my secret method , lol
Love the new colors, especially the greens. I think they'll look awesome. Can't lie - I was hoping you guys were gonna trade for a baby goat. 😂 But the new Polkies are so beautiful. Maybe you guys could look into making a chicken tractor? Or are rattlesnakes too big of a wild card? Good luck with mixing the birds!!
Here in Upstate NY? The chicken wild card is weasels, hawks, coons, and fox. I know damn well if I ever get chickens I'm going to have to tractor them or keep em locked up.
After watching for over a year, you both are getting a lot more comfy around the camera and as a person building in the desert of NM you are super inspiring. Keep up the great work!
I just wanted to say that I like that you label all the birds/wildlife you have in your videos. Thanks!

Nice explanation about the breeds. Thanks.
Thanks for all the info Don!
Whoa listen to the confidence in Jes's voice so glad you are doing well. You have a great speaking voice

Yay! You added sage green to the shingles! Almost feels like we're participating in your project :) And the gold is really gorgeous!

Morning Dove & Scaled Quail 🤗❤👍
Jess was so adorable and fun in this video! I love to see her show more of her personality! So fun! Wishing you guys all the best!
Friend gave me a dozen eggs which I put in the incubator. 4 hatched. New genetics for my flock. Getting new genetics is good.
Love your new colors, and it's really great to see Jess doing the intro! For Crew, a good wire bristle dog brush will make a world of difference, but if you want to get serious, try the furminator! Earmuffs though please!
I really think they look like dragon scales. They're going to look amazing, especially with the colours of the desert.
I love that you include the birds, and the names of the birds.
You guys make me so happy. I always have such a huge smile on my face while I'm watching. I love the colors you guys picked for the shingles. Say hello to the chickens for us! ❤🥰
Green is E-Chips favorite color! Good choice! Thanks, guys.
Awesome to see the new chicks. Wire wheel works wonders! Shingles looking good! Stay safe and have a great weekend.
CB! How have you been? Feeling good? You can send us a pm if you don't want to put it in the comments. Hope you're doing well.
Excited about the permaculture design..
I never relized how long your hair is Jess. Beautiful
Pop Quiz: What birds were visiting our feeder? Scaled Quails
You should wear safety glasses. The wire wheel turning at high speed can release a wire and launch it into the eyes.
Looks like the wind is trying to blow your laundry to the next county!
Can't wait to see the shingles when they are up. Love the colors. The new pilkishes are cool looking. Hope at least one is a hen.
I'm thinking it was the mourning dove that was shown at that time.
Shingles….. green for the money and gold for the honey!!! 😄

Pop quiz answer: Scaled Quail.
The new colors are great! Ya'll have a good selection of colors to mix and match when you install them. It should look great!
What wonderful neighbors you have they have an amazing set-up.. Blessings ❤️Jes you ALWAYS put a smile on my face
The new birds are beautiful🐓🐔❤️
Jes I loved that entrance! You need to watch yourself it was super. Right on que. Hubby called you over and there you were. All smiles and all!!!
The new birds are so attractive! Have never seen any like those 😊 love the way they have that little poof style on their heads!!! Y’all are amazing to watch with your home updates and of course that Crew is a ham for the camera 🤩 Take care 👍
Shirl K - Texas
I think they are Polish or Polish cross. :-)
I can't wait to seethe shingles once they are up. It going to look so cool. Also, loved seeing Crew smiling so much-so cute.
I just loved everything about this one.. from intro to finish!! Jess You seem like a natural in front of the camera.. great job , Both of you!
A bench grinder with a wire wheel on one side and grinding wheel on the other would have been sweet for that project with the sheer number of pieces to be processed.
This Seattle area suburbanite has been really enjoying your channel. Your content is great and your personalities get better the more I view.
Kudos🤙🏼
If ya knew someone with a sand blast cabinet could of gotten all the tins done in an hour. 😉🤔👍
Small self tapping screws would surely cost more than rivets but would cut the instillation time down vastly
Hope you guys weren't affected with the Arizona fires. I know it's in New Mexico now hope you're safe and stay healthy.
morning dove! scaled quail! remembered... right where to go to find it lol. ya'll got me excited to see these big changes! what a great time to be alive.
Won’t it be easier if you had 2 cinder blocks on top of one another, then you don’t have to bed down so much ( save your back)
Can't wait to see the shingles installed it going to look great. I don't comment often but I had to tell you your video you did on the pecan orchard and the water usage along time ago got me hooked and had to subscribe.

Yes..you need to get inside completed quick so you can enjoy the coolness in Summer
We love color, and you chose some great shades! Can't wait to see them installed.
Love that teal color
Contrats!! Nothing like being new parents.
The temperature difference in the earthbag house is amazing! What books/videos/workshops did you learn about this type of buildings? I also noticed the gabion structures, there is not alot of information about those either.
😀🌱🐢
Nice color choices. I was going to suggest before maybe southwestern colors.
Beautiful ♥️♥️♥️🌹🌹🌹
really nice to see Jess animated in the video, you both inspire me
Your right! Some time things don't go to planned. But don't you love it? When it does?
Enjoyed the show
Jess you seem much happier now that you do one video. Id rather not see you overworked and worn out. Love you talkin more in the beginning, love that music! . You are no longer shy yo me. You can put a disk on your drill and sand down the edges of your shingles should be a lot faster.
I would set up beds inside the dome for sleeping and a work station if possible to use come the hottest weather.
Why not put all the shingles and some gravel into your mixer and let it tumble for a while. Edges will get dull and scuffed surfaces.
Wishing you guys a blessed week and a gentle spring season. Peace
I'm glad your doing different colors. Going to be a cool look!!
Ohhh goodness! So many changes since I've visited your page. Wonderful 👍🏽
🖖🏽☮❣🌱🌱🌱
Scale(?) Quail

Great progress. So happy & Proud of you two. #Keepupthegreatwork
Nice variety of paint colors
I would run extension cords out to the Dome and be working in there on those shingles. I like checking in and seeing how you are doing.
Loved the natural speed drier
Hope you are safe from the fires that are raging.
Nice chickens. Love the shingles. Susie
Didn’t watch all till I commented, just good to know for future projects , a great choice of colors , now it’s jesses job for her artistic placement.
Love the new colors!! And the chickens too. Integrating is tricky.... I have a little girl named Diva and she's in her own 'condo'.... we flunked integration.
Oh they way better. 🤗🌼
I was hoping you would bring home a goat. Love the goats they are so giving with milk and joy.
Don’t tell people you’ve got the shingles or they’ll send you to the doctor.
Looks like you have a great blow dryer for your laundry, at least the wind is good for something.
Great video Y’all. I really like the colors you chose. You had Scaled Quail feeding on your seed trays.
You need a wire brush on a drill to ruff up the metal scales
Love the polish cross hens! ❤️
Good job!
Bird, bird, bird is the word, bird! the world my change but I hope you ALL stay the same, stay safe. thank you
It’s so nice to hear that you have lots of changes coming up ! 🌺👍🏼🌼wow can’t wait !
I'm putting in a big permiculter base garden now , hand digging it , fun , 21' x 11' to start , sand and clay , so have to dig 12" down , fill with goodness, my secret method , lol

Awesome episode cheers thank you. Had to have a giggle 😃 when jess popped into the clip so quick. Loving your videos guys.
"Pop quiz" I seen quail and doves And I think you have some wrens too🙂
New colors are perfect 🥰
Jess made me laugh when she suddenly appeared!
Awesome colors and the new chickens are gorgeous. God bless y'all.
That roadrunner move by Jess freaked me!
9:48 is a dramatically beautiful moment of Crew on the sofa. A prizewinner picture for sure.
Your house looks so happy!
MUCHAS FELICIDADES POR LO QUE HACEN, SON UN VERDADERO EJEMPLO.
Way to go Jess! Loved the video!
YAY! got my fix! Excited for the next one!
Wow what a great VIDEO welcome to your new CHICKENS
Happy chicks !
