This was one of the most comprehensive packing videos I’ve ever seen! Great job and thank you for taking the time to go through everything in such detail! Toby is lucky to have you as his partner. The extra gear you carry to make sure he’s comfortable warmed my heart. Also the time you took with his food prep. I used to do the same for my dog. Godspeed on your hike!
Best video I've seen on a trekking loadout. I'm doing the Camino Primitivo in late September and am loading for a similar weight, also including shaving gear (I'm ex mil as well, its a morale thing). I'll take a bit more comfort over weight all day long. I'm taking a bigger 75L pack as I prefer having extra spare space for quick pack downs, but that's a personal preference. Have a great trek from fellow trekker and wild camper in Pembs.
Thanks for the positive feedback, it's much appreciated. That really does sound like a great hike, something I'd like to do one day in the future. Hope you have a great one on the trail. ATB, Ryan.
A great instructional video Ryan. Glad to,see your standards don't fall regarding the whisky glass! I hope you and Toby have a great trip. Looking forward to the footage ! 👍
You and I have very similar tastes in kit and reasoning for each..right down to the P bag! So convenient and easy it's unreal. Cheers for the videos which are always the best I've had the pleasure of watching - Thanks! 👍
Expertly done, no messing about. Lovely lot of advice. Getting a food dehydrator is such a brilliant idea. Enjoyed watching as usual. Only a Welshman could come out with such style. Love to you and your family, Boyo.
Thanks for taking the time to show us your kit. I knew heavy kit should be at the back, but never knew lighter kit should be at the top. I always kept all my wash kit, power bank and electrical stuff in my lid. Look forward to your adventure with Toby. Serk
Hiya Ry. Great review. Some cool kit. Like how you cut old sleeping bag for Toby. Thought it was cool. Good tip with talc. Like how you keep some of your gear for years. Sleep system pack away so small. Good idea with your food and doing it yourself and dry it. Great backpack. Can't believe how much you got in there. Sunglasses often needed. Brilliant review.👌👏👏👍
@wildaboutwales Your channel is great, no nonsense and a proper down to earth bloke. I'm going have another night or 2 camping soon. Probably north Wales. Your vid helped me to prepare and pack properly. 😉👍
Wow! Thank you Ryan! That was very clear and thorough instructions! We echo many of the previous comments! Looking forward to the coming videos of your hike! That Toby is such a good dog!!
The Montane Minimus jacket is not designed to be used with a backpack. Unfortunately where the pack sits on your back at the points with the least pressure causes the material to rub and it looses its water resistance hence why they are designed for runners. Good luck on your hike buddy. 👍
I was thinking this as soon as I set off with my backpack on, mate. It's such a delicate material, I realised that over time it wouldn't be good for them. I was thinking more of the wear and tear though, not so much the waterproofing, I didn't know that. It's a shame, because they were brilliant for the hike. Thanks for the info anyway, much appreciated. ATB, Ryan.
Brilliant video, enjoyed watching that right till the end and I hope you're both off living your best lives now. Toby with his lovely looking grub and sleep system and you with those cheeky whiskeys and decent dram glass 🥃👍🏼
Great video Ryan, I’m just getting my kit together for the coast 2 coast and 1st long distance hike so this is very useful. Good luck on your hike, looking forward to watching your journey.
Oh hey great videos man. I'm a guy from California who did a lot of tent camping with family and friends when I was younger. We have a lot of nice areas for camping here. These days I just do cabin camping though. Back then I did tents and cabins and our trips were usually for trout fishing near rivers. I still love trout fishing. I am getting older now though and turning 40 in August which is a huge shock. I never did the kind of hiking you do but did some. I give you credit for that it must take a lot of endurance. I have had some bad injuries over the years from car accidents and some other stuff but I am OK. I can still do a lot of hiking and stuff but kinda just taking it easy these days. I really liked your bothy video. Do some more where you stay and have a fire. I always loved a good fire in a cabin or outside of a cabin It's peaceful.
Hey there, thank you for watching and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I'd love to do some hiking in the States, you've got some great looking hikes over there, The Appalachian, PCT, look fantastic. I do love a good camp fire, but it's not allowed in the National Park where I do most of my camping, I will have one when I can though. My hike is all finished now, and the videos just uploaded. Thanks again, ATB, Ryan.
Lookin at your sleeping bag for the dog which is great idea , I cut all the zips out of my well used snugpack jacket and gave it to the dog as sleep mat bed and she loves it
Thank you! That sounds quite snug to be honest. Yes, as long as it works and keeps them warm and comfy, that's all that matters. Thanks for watching, ATB, Ryan.
The best packing/layout instructional I've ever seen bro. Well played, and I look forward to watching your trip😎 The Storey Arms..... Sends a shiver down my spine having done 'The Fan' in the 70's😱Good luck, safe journey🙏
Bless you and Toby. I'm watching this in Crumarthen and I can hear it blowing a hoolie and persisting down so hooe you're both ok... better weather coming and you might even get to wear your sunglasses! Thank you for a really good packing vid. I say it every time, a cook book/ series would be awesome! Your grub always looks lush! Take care and enjoy!!🏴
Hey! Great tip about the bag of talc. for the feet and your food looks well sorted. I'm glad you didn't leave the whisky behind, expertly packed and sorted, have a great trip 👍
Brilliant video. I was waiting with baited breath for the "weigh-in" at the end but it never came! Hope it's not too heavy and doesn't slow you down. Love the idea of de-hydrating your food.
Sorry, Phil, I'll have to take the scales on my next kit video. It was around 11.5kg base weight and approx 17.5kg fully loaded with Toby's gear. Thanks for watching, ATB, Ryan.
Just found this channel, absolutely brilliant video, one of the best I have watched, really like your attention to detail, the dehydrated meals are brilliant. Your attention for your dog also, I am exactly the same with my dog. Very intelligent and well thought out set up. Really enjoyed watching this, thank you for sharing this
Thank you! I've just updated the description and added the food dehydrator. Unfortunately I can't add the bags as the link is too long to fit in the description - just search for Mylar Bags. I used 16cm (W) x 24cm (L) but I'd recommend buying wider ones to eat your meals out of.
Loving the Channel Ryan, I’m also Ex Brit Mill and a whiskey fanatic if you are ever in Cardiff my son Dylan is the manager of the Whiskey Shop in the Royal Arcade if your ever in there mention his dad Shaun watches your channel I’m sure he would give you discount maybe even a mention on your channel 👍🙏
Hello, Shaun, I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. I didn't even know there was a whisky shop in the Arcade. I'll have to pop my head in the next time I'm in Cardiff. Thank you, mate, that's so very kind of you...much appreciated 👌🏼👍🏼
Great video, thanks, particularly found the food prep interesting. Perhaps a video topic with your set up for the future. Thanks once again for your content. All the best for the future trips.
The older a fella gets, the more he appreciates a pee bottle for use in the middle of the night! This is a fine loadout and it fits in an amazingly efficient space.
Great video mate. Was starting to think you were the real Mary Poppins half way through 😂 My cocker and I are doing the same trail at the end of the year and will look forward to watching your tips on it.
Thanks, mate. I'm all finished now and relaxing at home. It's a great hike, I really enjoyed it. I've got a lot of editing to do, hopefully I'll have the video up by the end of the week 👍🏼
This is such a good and informative video. Cheers for the insight there’s quite a few tips I’ve picked up from this like the dehydrated food. Cheers mate 👍
Wow, Mon 15th April 7am watching this & it's blowing a hollie outside with horizontal rain - hope them waterproofs are doing ok. Love to watch these hike list videos, people have some ingeneious way of lightening the pack loads. I did laugh out loud at the whisky glass mind 🤣 Love the way Toby gets equal status in your trips - nothing too muhc trouble for you when it comes to looking after him also, big up to you Ryan. It's obvious that with the packing you have a tried & tested system for carrying loads whilst making it as comfortable as possible for the hike. Good luck, hope the weather is kind to you, look forward to seeing the video/s. Friend of mine (Morgs4mountains) has done it along with a couple of other long trails which might interest you - he is on you tube. atb Al
Thanks, Martin. If you're referring to the bag I keep my food in, it's a selection of drawstring pouches I bought on Amazon...here's the link: www.amazon.co.uk/Drawstring-Camping-Storage-Travel-Pieces/dp/B07G795S2B/ref=asc_df_B07G795S2B/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=622397534057&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3594983784326132535&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045381&hvtargid=pla-633420120477&psc=1&mcid=a9026cc6f1b535188c1bf67c99097fc6

Thank you, Christian, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm lucky that my dog is quite fit and he's good at steep climbs and jumping fences. I've only ever had to lift him over a fence a few times, I've just picked him up by cradling him in my arms and dropped him the other side
Great video. What are those small pouches that you’ve added to the straps on the rucksack they look really handy. I take my dog on all my hiking trips and want to take him wild camping too. That’s a great idea with the dehydrator, I’ve had a food dehydrator for years to make biltong, have you got a video of how you do it from start to finish. How a video about packing a rucksack can be so interesting is beyond me but you’ve done it mate. Cheers
Thanks for the positive feedback. The pouches are OMM Go Pods, I've just added the link in the description for them. I haven't done a video on how I made the dog food, but it's maybe something I may do in a future video as a few people have shown interest in it. ATB, Ryan.
Excellent video and very informative and explained buddy. Just out of curious in case I missed it how long are you expecting to complete this hike? Just wondering what the your final kit weigh in was and how long you’d be going for. Hope You have the wether gods on your side and you and Toby have great travels! Look forward to the next update as always buddy keep up the great work 👌🏻
Hi mate, unfortunately, Toby couldn't join me due to a pulled muscle. Originally with Toby, it was going to be at his pace, maybe 7 to 8 days. I decided to attempt it at a quicker pace on my own, but it was a tough hike, you'll see in the video once it's up. I didn't weigh before I set off, but without Toby's stuff, fully loaded I was between 15 to 16kg. Cheers, bud.
As others have said, excellent load out and packing video. I'm planning to do the Beacons Way in a few weeks and very interested in leaving a resupply at Storey Arms. Did you just ring them up and ask?
Thank you, Roger. Yes, I gave them a call and asked if it would be ok. A couple that works there have walked it themselves, so they were more than happy to help. I hope you'll be filming it, it's a great walk. Best of luck to you!
Not in this video Ryan, but what chair do you use? I’ve one similar but notice yours has a mat to sit the legs on saves the feet digging into the ground? Thanks for sharing you knowledge and adventures 🙌
Thanks, mate. It's the Trekology Ultra lightweight chair and I bought the footprint seperate, I can't remember where from, but there's plenty out there if you search. www.amazon.co.uk/Trekology-YIZI-Portable-Camping-Chair/dp/B07NT77GT8/ref=asc_df_B07NT77GT8/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1654251019270561953&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045376&hvtargid=pla-2281435179058&psc=1&mcid=8906e885672737d79090631aa0a9f903&hvocijid=1654251019270561953-B07NT77GT8-&hvexpln=74&gad_source=1
Great video Ryan and so much information! One of the best I’ve seen! Thank you for sharing. Are any of the links affiliated? Might be worth looking at especially with Amazon?
Thanks, the dried meals were great for the hike. Could you please let me know what the unnecessary items are please. It would be interesting to know as I've used all the bits I carry, either on this hike or previous hikes over the years. ATB, Ryan.
Dude? Whats ya problem? I watched bout thousands of vidz for backpacking, hiking, bushcrafting etc. And then, i bought the kestrel 48, sit here on my Couch, eating breakfast, watching your vid and have to say, UA-cam should delete all other videos. This vid, is the most complete and comprehensive vid regarding our Hobby or Lifestyle. Osprey should hire you for content. I mean, Look how you handle the zippers etc. You Show what this backpack is capable of and i just delete my playlist with All the other vidz from other content creators. Thx for this vid
I notice in other videos you use another sleeping pad. Do you recommend Klymit over the other? I'm looking for firm enough because if it's like a water bed, it will do a number on my back. I found your page totally by accident because of my interest in a certain Victorian-era travel blogger after finding his book by accident. I am spreading you to all my friends.
Hi there, thank you for sharing the channel, it's much appreciated. I'll be honest, I wouldn't recommend either of the pads I'm using at the moment, reason being there's much better sleeping pads out there you could look at. The Klymit has a low R-value and my RAB is a bit heavy and bulky. I'm currently on the lookout for a new sleeping pad myself - I'm looking for a 4 season and I'm thinking of getting the Thermarest neoair XTherm NXT (regular wide). It delivers a 7.3 R-value while weighing just 440 g (15.5 oz). It also comes in a larger or smaller size. It's a little on the pricey side, but ideal for me as it's lightweight and I can use it in all seasons. What sort of temperatures will you be camping in? And will you just be using it on one night camps or for hiking expeditions as well? If it's just for one night camps in the summer months, you could maybe get a pad that has less of an R-value and it wouldn't have to be as lightweight either - there would be cheaper options you could look at then. Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you have any questions and I'll try my best to point you in the right direction. ATB, Ryan.
@@wildaboutwales That's for the quick response. It going to be mostly warmer temps (4-15 C nights) as I live in a relatively warm climate. Usually I can only go for short trips, but I like to do some backyard camping, too, where the weight is not so important, of course. You might inspire me to do the longer hiking trips :), but for now the weight is not as important.
@@wpegram9868 you could get a sleeping pad that's got less R-value then, and one that's not necessarily lightweight. In that case the RAB one I use may be suitable for you as it's very firm when inflated, and it's got rafts to stop you rolling off. But like I said it's a little bulky - it's the RAB Stratosphere www.inglesport.com/product/rab-stratosphere-4-sleeping-mat/?attribute_pa_size=regular&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw88yxBhBWEiwA7cm6pTkfSbAJv4tOt7Q5r9iDJo5ckn3fnQv5zisEIPXUF8bWOUccMKvJUBoCOM4QAvD_BwE It's definitely worth shopping around for other options first though. I don't know if you subscribe to them, but Paul Messner, My Life Outdoors, and Dan Becker have done a lot of reviews on sleeping pads - it may be worth checking those out before making a decision.
This was one of the most comprehensive packing videos I’ve ever seen! Great job and thank you for taking the time to go through everything in such detail! Toby is lucky to have you as his partner. It tasted good too, Mike. Diolch!
Very informative video. Good luck on the journey, mate! Looking forward to the vids!

Another fantastic video mate. Looking forward to seeing pictures and videos of the hike. Stay safe👍👍

Brilliant review.👌👏👏👍

In all my wild camps, i have never, ever, had cake and custard. Its definitely going to be in my pack on friday 😂 great video!
Funnily enough, you've just reminded me I need to pick up powdered custard for my next hike 😂 Thank you, mate! 👍🏼
Brilliant video. Have used it as guidance for packing for the Cotswold Way.Many thanks
Thank you, Gill, glad you found it helpful. Good luck on the Cotswold Way, it looks a beautiful walk.
What an absolutely brilliant video, a great set up you have. I’ll be taking some of these ideas to make my overnight camps a little easier👍👍👏👏

Great video, thanks, particularly found the food prep interesting. Perhaps a video topic with your set up for the future. Thanks once again for your content. All the best for the future trips.
Thanks, Andrew, glad you found it helpful. Yes, it's probably a video I may do as a few people have been interested in the dehydrated food. ATB, Ryan.
Awesome video!!!!! Create kit list with loads of tips. Thanks
Thank you, Mark! Glad you enjoyed it. ATB, Ryan.
A great video. Good luck to you and your Besty trek safe 👍
Thank you, mate! ATB, Ryan.
The older a fella gets, the more he appreciates a pee bottle for use in the middle of the night! This is a fine loadout and it fits in an amazingly efficient space.
Yes, it comes in quite handy these days, James, especially after the whisky. Thanks and thanks for watching. Ryan.
Thanks, mate. I'm glad you found the video helpful. ATB, Ryan.
Fantastic 👌
Thanks, Jason!
Absolutely brilliant video cheers man, gives me a big head start on planning my next trip.
Nice one, mate. Glad you found it helpful. Have a good one!
Great video ry ,
Thanks, Mam!
That was a great vid mate👍 new subscriber, atb
Thanks, Richard. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Welcome to the channel. ATB, Ryan.
Friend of mine (Morgs4mountains) has done it along with a couple of other long trails which might interest you - he is on you tube. atb Al
I caught that wind on the Black Mountain Range, Alan. It was definitely blowing a hoolie, that's for sure. ATB, Ryan.
Good luck on the trail. Never know may bump into you being a local
Thank you! Much appreciated. If we do, be sure to say hello. ATB, Ryan.
Really helpful vid, thanks man. Doing the Skye trail this Sept and found this so useful.
Thank you, glad it was of some help to you. The Skye trail is a hike I'd love to do. Hope it's a good one for you 👍🏼
Great video, can I ask what the bigger food bag is please.
Thanks, Martin. If you're referring to the bag I keep my food in, it's a selection of drawstring pouches I bought on Amazon...here's the link: www.amazon.co.uk/Drawstring-Camping-Storage-Travel-Pieces/dp/B07G795S2B/ref=asc_df_B07G795S2B/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=622397534057&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3594983784326132535&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045381&hvtargid=pla-633420120477&psc=1&mcid=a9026cc6f1b535188c1bf67c99097fc6
Thank you 👍
Excellent and very comprehensive video. Nicely done buddy. Good point on the pee bottle where was the one you’ve got bought from?
Thank you, mate, glad you found it helpful. Here's a link for the bottle...

All that healthy grub then it looks like you've filled your squeezy bottle with WKD :D
Near enough! It was whisky.
best packing video i have seen! One question from another dog owner keen to go with his dog on hikes: how do you lift the dog if it is a steep climb?
ATB, Ryan.
@@wildaboutwales thanks for the reply Ryan ATB
Excellent video and very informative and explained buddy. Just out of curious in case I missed it how long are you expecting to complete this hike? Just wondering what the your final kit weigh in was and how long you’d be going for. Hope
You have the wether gods on your side and you and Toby have great travels!
Awesome video mate, probably the best gear and packing videos I've seen!
Are you ex forces by any chance?
Cheers, Chris! Much appreciated. Yes, ex infantry, mate.
@wildaboutwales I could tell! Proper decent admin haha. Subscribed, good luck with the channel!
@@christopherwfrancis obviously you are ex too, ha ha. Thanks for the sub, mate, and welcome to the channel.
As others have said, excellent load out and packing video. I'm planning to do the Beacons Way in a few weeks and very interested in leaving a resupply at Storey Arms. Did you just ring them up and ask?
Thank you, Roger. Yes, I gave them a call and asked if it would be ok. A couple that works there have walked it themselves, so they were more than happy to help. I hope you'll be filming it, it's a great walk. Best of luck to you!
Not in this video Ryan, but what chair do you use? I’ve one similar but notice yours has a mat to sit the legs on saves the feet digging into the ground? Thanks for sharing you knowledge and adventures 🙌
Thanks, mate. It's the Trekology Ultra lightweight chair and I bought the footprint seperate, I can't remember where from, but there's plenty out there if you search. www.amazon.co.uk/Trekology-YIZI-Portable-Camping-Chair/dp/B07NT77GT8/ref=asc_df_B07NT77GT8/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1654251019270561953&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045376&hvtargid=pla-2281435179058&psc=1&mcid=8906e885672737d79090631aa0a9f903&hvocijid=1654251019270561953-B07NT77GT8-&hvexpln=74&gad_source=1
Great video Ryan and so much information! One of the best I’ve seen! Thank you for sharing. Are any of the links affiliated? Might be worth looking at especially with Amazon?
Thank you, mate, I appreciate the positive feedback. No, I'm not affiliated with anyone, it's something I may look into in the future. ATB, Ryan.
@@wildaboutwales definitely worth doing mate, your building a great channel/community!
@@evilawkeye2215 thanks, mate 👍🏼
some great stuff in there like the dried meals. but so much unnecessary stuff you'll just never ever need.
Thanks, the dried meals were great for the hike. Could you please let me know what the unnecessary items are please. It would be interesting to know as I've used all the bits I carry, either on this hike or previous hikes over the years. ATB, Ryan.
Crohc!
Not quite sure what crohc means, John, but thank you, anyway.
@@wildaboutwales Great video, thank you. Cnoc, pronounced crohc means hill in Scottish Gaelic.

Is this the Small Medium or the Large Extra large?
This is the 48L which is a medium.
@@wildaboutwales Oh alright, just asking because the 48L comes in 2 sizes. S/M and L/XL 👍👌
@@eddy_music_log ah, I do apologise, Ignore my first comment, I just double checked and I've got the 48L in a Large.
@@wildaboutwales Thank you 🙏 that helps alot
@@eddy_music_log you're welcome.
Wow! Thank you, my friend. I've had a lot of positive comments on this video, but this one is by far the best. Many thanks to you, Ryan.
Weight ? Maybe I missed it, put please let me know.
Hi, my base weight was 11.5kg. And fully packed with food and water was my dogs gear was 17.5kg.
In 48 Liters, nice joke 😂😂😂
No joke, it all fits in there 🙂
22,18 ahh the joys a being a man.
Indeed. And with the weather I had, that bottle came in handy. Thanks for watching, Ryan.
But like I said it's a little bulky - it's the RAB Stratosphere www.inglesport.com/product/rab-stratosphere-4-sleeping-mat/?attribute_pa_size=regular&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw88yxBhBWEiwA7cm6pTkfSbAJv4tOt7Q5r9iDJo5ckn3fnQv5zisEIPXUF8bWOUccMKvJUBoCOM4QAvD_BwE
It's definitely worth shopping around for other options first though. I don't know if you subscribe to them, but Paul Messner, My Life Outdoors, and Dan Becker have done a lot of reviews on sleeping pads - it may be worth checking those out before making a decision.
