- It's June and myself and @AndrewBeavers are backpacking 80 miles along the Cumbria Way in the Lake District. Our plan is to complete the trip in 5 days, hiking and camping along the way, so all of our gear will have to fit in our backpacks. This video breaks down the gear I took in my backpack and what I thought about each bit of kit.

I'd like you to give the West Highland way a go
Do it did a few months ago
Me too , I love these videos
You'll need to carry a lot of midgie repellent for that walk!
Doing it in two weeks myself! Wish me luck!
@@worlddownfall4062I am about to do it in September, you got any tips?
Absolutely fantastic mini series Paul. It's been a joy to watch them and to see how much you genuinely enjoyed it yourself only added to that. Thanks.
I did the Tour Du Mont Blanc this summer. Absolutely stunning walk, as far as scenery goes by far the best I’ve done.
Great to see you in a happy place. Best kit review I've seen. Well done Paul and Andy
Useful video! Thanks!
Loved the whole trip Paul. Always great advice and ideas. You were so lucky with the weather! Many thanks.
Great series of vids Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Paul! Great trip and nice load out. I really enjoy your videos.
Oh, this was so timely....thanks!
Nice gear recap. The series was great! Really enjoyed watching!
So interesting to see other folks’ kit lists! Loved the whole walk Paul, please do more long distance walks - one of the coast to coasts perhaps. Thanks for the videos, so well filmed and you make amiable company. 👍🏻🙂
as always nice setup! have fun out there
Superb video. Very impressed at how much went into the pack. Good to know some nice campsites along the way too. Thanks
Fantastic. Thank you Paul for this one
Paul that was such an amazing series, you should definitely push yourself into these trips as often as possible and ad often as you like! got me through a couple bad days of sleep with this heat, some of your best content yet! Ash down in the south downs!
Well done Paul, information much appreciated, thank you. 🍻👍👍👍
Good video lots of good advice for us new campers thanks poul xx
First class stuff Paul. Terriffic camera work and commentary.
I enjoyed every moment of it and the last one was perfectly set up for us all to get an idea of the sort of equipment needed for this type of hike.
Well done!!
What a gem of a youtube channel this is, i just found it and watched several of your videos. Great content! 😊
Excellent video thank you
Great video as usual Paul thank you
Thanks and kudos!
Well done and great video Paul
Fantastic video!!
Well done
Great end to this series of videos. I like your no-nonsense approach. I would love to see some more like this...
Excellent! Nice job mate 👌🏽👍🏻👍🏻😎
Great vid, very useful thanks. 👍
Thanks Paul for the serie and the debriefing 😊
Good overview Paul ... thanks
Health and Happiness to you
I'm just venturing into this activity, thank you for these videos they are very informative.
Really enjoyed that paul thanks
Great kit choice Paul. You're getting good at this 😉🏴
Loved this, Paul. Id like to see you do more of these style videos- walk a multiday hike then discuss your gear afterwards. You have all the gear and know-how. The summer is still young so please do more! Great stuff
Paul it's great to see you going strong & only getting stronger, I'm glad to say I was watching you from the start... Even if stuff got in the way.
Keep trucking mucker 👍👍
Been following for a while. Great joined vids, enjoyed the journey, this was the epilogue we were all hoping for…. #lovethestash
Great video as always. Really got me wanting to have a crack at this.
I would love to do something like this in the future. I have the atom pack mow and yes that pack is so comfortable to wear. Great to see the gear used. Well done on achieving 80 miles ✅👍
These videos are sensational. Thanks for sharing with us Paul. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🏕️🏞️🇬🇧🇧🇷
Paul you are a cool dude and I’m so happy for you and the success of your channel. Cheers mate🥂🍻
Paul ,I am impressed with the fact you completed a multiway backpacking trip and carried everything ,Well done .Please can we have more of these multiday trips on your site .
Good product reviews as well .
And I bet the exercise did you the world of good !!
I've been using Lone Peaks for about 18 months on all sorts of terrain. Really like them. Enjoyed this series 6 thanks for sharing.
I'm pretty impressed at how light everything was in the end with all of the extra bits and bobs you had. I guess having such a lightweight tent means you can afford to have more stuff overall. I just bought a 'lightweight' OEX tent and that's still about 2.5 kg and a 400 g sleeping pad. But considering my previous tent was 4.5 kg and the mattress 1.9 kg (plus about 0.8 kg for a foot pump), this is still a huge reduction). I don't use walking poles so I wouldn't save weight by also using them as tent poles.
I'll check it out in preparation for this coming Spring.
Skye trail, bit of everything there, beautiful 😊
Great review on your kit, enjoyed all episodes of your adventure, also watch Andy's take on the journey to compare lol, 👍
Those are nicely picked items 👍
Excellent viewing on all 4 vlogs! Recently up at Neaum Crag in May and Little Langdale last week so enjoyed the warm weather as well!
A fantastic series, and it’s great to go through your kit afterwards to talk through what worked what didn’t but as you said had it not been warm or had you wild camped the kit would have changed accordingly. 👍
Thanks for that Paul, very informative. And a good end the your Cumbrian way trip.👍
Myself and my partner have just been exploring the zero drop shoe. Thank you for sharing these shoes...definitely going to invest in some. 👍👍👍
Another, great video.
I've had the Xmid since 2020 and think it's an excellent tent. I used it when walking the Two Moors Way last year.
The walk across Dartmoor and Exmoor, coast to coast is a brilliant trail and worth adding to your list of possibles
Great videos Paul 👍 love to see you hike The Southdowns way one day !!
I’ve been really enjoying watching your videos, and some great reviews of lightweight kit. I’m planning to walk the South Downs Way in September, depending how that goes, then the SWCP next year. Currently I’m sorting out gear and your tips have been great.
Packing the grass for later!😮😂
Seriously The Dales Highway would suit you Paul, an overlooked route and probably one of the best❤
Great vid Paul
Love the way you don't always buy premium kit. Decathlon in sheff is my go too.
Hi Paul, would like to do the cumbria way looks amazing with plenty of pub stops.
1 way to test you is doing a few back to back 30 milers and doing the pennine way.
Magic video Paul, you're a salve for the soul.
What does the cork ball do btw?
Really enjoyed the walk and now the gearlist. You didn't mention your compass... 🔥🧨💪🏽🤠👍🏽🧨🔥
Excellent kit review and has given me some ideas for my next walking holiday. For another long distance walk perhaps The Ridgeway with Wiltshire man.
Great stuff Paul. I moved to the Lone Peak 6 a while back and then got the Olympus 5 with vibram sole. The Olympus seems a lot more solid with better support. Love them both and wear all the time. Look like the shoes that your mam used to make you wear for school but I put comfort first. Enjoyed the Cumbria way walk mate.
I was also thinking it would be nice to see you do the WHW 💫
This trip was really nice to watch, thanks 🙏
Love you just weighed it in the end, and all the gear setups youre creating would be awesome if you did that with the budget version or others. When you bring your own gear, its always interesting to se what you bring with you. Love you videos mate!
Great Paul and loved the honesty of your trip. Re hats; I was inspired by Hazy, using a fell running hat. I bought one by 'Buff'. Very lightweight, breathable, comfortable and kept the sun off my ginger noggin' and out my eyes.
Well done Paul. I embarked on my first multiday hike in May from Glenfinnan to Inverie in Scotland. The Platypus looks great!, I used a pure clear filter on my trip. It was a great filter, but leaking was a problem.
Could you do a video on all those little "unsung heroes that nobody talks about"? You had a lot of useful things in those bags that I would never have thought of.
It would be good to see you do a budget wild camp and hear your thoughts on how they compare to what you’ve come to use now.
Thanks for sharing what worked and didn’t.
Fantastic gear introduction, really enjoyed this video! 👍👍 (Vicky)
Really enjoyed this, also answered my watch questions 👍 The Don’t tell Jo comment 😂 10/10
I'm glad I believe I can trust what I think I understand that you displayed through your talent here.
You must be pretty much confident and experienced Outdoorsman. This makes my favorite equipment review. No joke I would copy you and buy everything you have shown but I'm not organized enough.
Thank you very much for making this and sharing your insight, Paul. You have a lovely way of sharing your thoughts, modest and friendly and knowledgeable. I've subscribed and just watched this video wild camping on Dartmoor by Hay Tor. I think you'd really enjoy The Two Moors Way if you haven't already hiked it. Cheers
We really enjoyed this mini series, you properly motivate us “ordinary mortals” to get out there, plus your humour is great. I know you've had some difficult times with the whole “YT life”, bit these 4 videos are top-notch 😀 How about a section of the South West Coast Path later in the year (when the weather is rubbish in the mountains)?
Wish I was as cool as big Paul:) what a legend!!
"Don't tell Jo" (20mins in). She's got a bleedin' GPS tracker on you shopping already! Great vid again, Paul.
I'm doing the Dales Way and Cumbria Way on the 5th and my beanie and scarf have just been taken off my gear list after watching this. Cheers. You should do the West Highland Way if you haven't already. It's incredible
Great couple of episodes Paul. Interesting to see the reasoning for your gear choices. Did the West Highland Way last week and wore Topo Terraventure 3's and highly recommmend them (with Superfeet Trailblazer insoles for a bit more comfort). Atb Andy
Yeah and the topos have a stone plate for extra support which I I don’t think the altras do. Same toe space as the altras. My topo Terraventure 3s cruised through the CWT. Awesome shoe.
Hey Paul, definitely try the West Highland or Skye Trail
I'm doing the Herriot Way in October with my border collie, really looking forward to it, not too much hill walking just p.enty of scenery...and pubs😂. I reckon you would enjoy that one Paul. Lone Peak 7's arrive tomorrow so all good 👍
Since you’re asking about a « better tent »
I would suggest a very similar but more ingenious one:
Tarptent Stratospire Lithium.
I chose this one because it perfectly suited my need regarding to
The Environments and climates I’m involved with when hiking.
(I’m in the Pyrenees mountains). So versatility is the main key !
Less condensation, max ventilation, heavy wind and rain protection
…it’s all there with some extras. 💡
'The Unsung Heroes of Hiking' could be a good video topic Paul, going through those little bits of kit (like the anti-chafe stick) that people don't tend to talk about - I'd definitely find it interesting!
Thanks for the detailed item-by-item breakdown. You've got me thinking about my sleeping mat (Xtherm all year round) and my sleeping bags (PHD 500 300 and half-bag)
Have you ever considered, or tried, just taking 1 shortsleeve Merino top and 1 longsleeve Merino top? You don't need to wash them for a 5 days trip, in warm weather you hike in the short-sleeve and if you get cold you add the long-sleeve over it, or at night wear the long-sleeve and if cold layer the short-sleeve over?
I mention it as those 5-day type trips are just on that cusp where Merino can be about to become stinky but you can use 2 Merino tops to layer to temperature.
It means you're only carrying one of those tops and no washing of the tops. 2 wool tops is very warm, add a windproof over it's exceedingly warm.
For sun - a regular longer Buff works for me, for when sun is straight up (and strongest) I twist it and double it, before/after noon as sun goes to side I'll single-layer it and drape on the sun side. I used to use a cap, and indeed owned a Tilley, but I found a long Buff covers all situations.
Water - I'm currently trying the BeFree filter. Too early to comment on effectiveness but certainly is fast+light.
Happy to see you made use of food+pubs on the way, absolutely the best way given your calorie outputs the dehydrated meals can't replace, and so not a surprise your 350ml meths bottle not used. I still think meths for this trip is probably best just because there's so many cafe/shops/pubs meths is a backup and is lighter than gas but say a Vango 250ml or something smaller would probably sufficed.
Hope to cross your path out there, we missed each other by 2 weeks many of the routes you were I'd just done. Yes we got lucky with the weather..
Thanks again for the video, you got me thinking on a few of your items.
I enjoyed the series, very light packing nice. I have the Sea To Summit Ether light sleeping pad it’s a bit thicker than the one you have there so comfortable as i sleep on my side, it’s has a nice Rvalue and it’s 500 grams 😊 I have this same tent also in solid also it’s brilliant for hiking in cold Tasmania australia or nz South Island
Army trick, take more socks, find a stream, boots and socks off and soak feet, shrink them back and fresh socks, great way to feel like you have fresh feet. You have some amazing Kit...
That was a lightweight pack considering the stuff you had in there I really like that pack would like to see a in depth video on it atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Wish that body glide was available in my younger raving days, inner thigh chfafing was a night killer😂
I do love my Durston 1P. I gave away my Fortius 2P and should take delivery of my Durstan 2P this week.
Great video. I'm going light...at 71 and a quadruple bypass 2 years ago, followed by 2 heart attacks 6 weeks ago. I have bought an X Mid2 which is about 1kg, as my son will be joining me.
fantastic videos, one thing that would be great to see is maybe a video on multifuel stoves? keep up the great work! :)
Great informative video Paul.
How about the Like Wake walk to Robin Hoods Bay?
Great video, as always. The only item of kit I shy away from recommending are 'shoes'. It is so personal, however zero drop shoes require a health warning.........I'd never recommend them, but if a walker has used them for months and years, fine. So many thru hikers on the AT had issues with them, not after 2-3 days, but 10-15 days. We all pack our fears to a degree, but whilst anyone can pack what they like, as they have to carry it, I'[d suggest for any longer hike (where you will feel the weight) you can reduce your clothing by 2/3rds
For years, Altras have been the #1 selling shoes for Thru-Hikers here in the USA. Been wearing them for 10 years.VERY COMFY! Topo Athletic are similar and I wear both. :)
Great series Paul! I’m a total convert to zero drop shoes with the big toe boxes too! Took a while to get used to it and my calves were killing for ages, but that’s all I wear now. You’re right tho - they don’t look very cool but I’d decided I’d rather be comfy 😂
Another great video. Very informative. Those shoes looked and sounded great, like bare feet shoes but more supportive and protective.
You should definitely do another similar trip. I really enjoyed watching this one.
One that is similar in distance is the Snowdonia Slate Trail. It's a bit boggy in places
Not much elevation, I think 500m is the highest point. You are a bit committed once you leave Ffestiniog and will have to wild camp. The only thing I didn't like was the kissing gates that were too small for me, plus my bag. A great walk though.
Thank you Paul for you’re reviews, opinions and general advice re: gear.
I’m just building up some kit for some hikes and overnights and have saved the pennies and just bought my sleep system.
Bought the thermatest NeoAir XTherm NXT MAX for its R rating and went large as I’m over 6 ft and the thermatest curos quilt…. Lot more than I was initially spending but after months of watching your content (and others) I decided the sleep system is an important factor to get right from day one. I have other sleeping bags for 2/3 season use (bulky though).
Bought the lanshan 2 a while ago as I use poles anyway, let’s see how it goes.
Also got the OEX stove as featured on your recent video from go outdoors, great bit of kit.
Just wanted to give you a shout out and thank you for your videos and advice, it’s invaluable.
Hey, I've been thinking of getting the thermarest Corus fort my first proper quilt, how are you finding it?
@@bradleypatching9905 It’s superb, although I’m not using it much in summer. I’ve the long version, I’m slightly over 6 foot and it’s a perfect fit. It’s a good price for a superb product, I’m happy to recommend.
Amazing content as usual paul. If you could a small video on the coros vertix 2 it looks so nice but pricey bit of kit. Thx
Great series!
Would be interested in a review of the Zoleo - been wondering about getting something like that (or a Garmin InReach)... Thanks in advance!
You're a funny man. "This thing cost 20 quid, don't tell Jo". Very informative video there, brother.
