It's nice to see 7 get a bit of love. The master manipulator and chess master - taking on gods and monsters - contrasted by the explosive teenage rebel, Ace, who is almost the complete opposite of the Doctor. Their dynamic is so good - ranging from caring teacher/student moments to familial arguments and personality clashes. She really is the template for modern Who companions, and I'll always appreciate a Doctor who doesn't shy away from taking the darker route when necessary.

I watched, but for me it is so much harder cause I've lived and loved these characters since I was 5 and Tom Baker was just ending and I was scared of Peter Davison cause I wanted MY Doctor to stay! I guess I came in around the start of Season 18 and was filling in the gaps watching 12 to 17 with my Dad to catch up. So yeah, I've had a lot longer to draw an opinion on the older Doctors. I also own and have listened to more Big Finish than anyone could ever remember. I have EVERYTHING (except Torchwood, Class, & Unbound audios). I've heard it all. I also own and have read all the Virgin books, all the Telos Novellas, and about half the BBC Books (I'm behind on reading). So it is so hard for me to pick favorites. Each has a place in my heart. So instead of Tiers, I'll just list numbers from best to worst, including all media. Ahem: 12, 8, 10, 4, 7, 11, 9, 5, 6, 2, 3, W, 1, 13, F... and F is mostly last cause I have nothing to go by really. I quit watching after Timeless Child. I do plan to pick it up again and slog through, but Series 12 was just so awful from start to horrible finish I just couldn't go on. Given my monetary investment into the brand I think this says a lot. From what little I understand of what came after apparently there is a Fob Watch Arc thing that contains the Timeless person and the Doctor just inhabits their body, but isn't them, or something like that, but its still wonky, and makes me wonder how Fugitive even works at all, and just OMG, make it stop RTD, save us all from this Retconn Hellscape!
But back to the numbers, it is so hard to put any of them low on the list because I love them all so much.

The issue with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor for me is that she's Lady Matt Smith but without the dark emotional undercurrent. I actually like Jodie Whittaker and think she could have made a great Doctor, but the writing and direction for her really let her down. I agree with what you said about Jodie's acting talent shining through just a few times. We got a few fleeting glimpses of a truly interesting Jodie Whittaker Doctor, and then it was back to the bubbly, shallow Doctor she was for most of her time on the show.
I respectfully disagree with your David Tennant ranking. I think he's a very well-acted and well-written Doctor, but I don't like his romantic interest in Rose or his tendency to be self-absorbed late into his run. The self-absorbed thing gave us a couple of really compelling character growth moments for the Doctor, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. I would put Tennant's Doctor just under Eccleston on the B tier.
Matt Smith is an A-tier Doctor for me. I guess it's because series 5 of modern Doctor Who is my favorite Doctor Who series. I consider it almost a masterpiece from a writing standpoint. I love how cohesive the storytelling is, and Matt Smith is the perfect Doctor for a fairy tale setting.
I completely agree with Peter Capaldi being the lone Doctor in the S tier. He absolutely nailed his time as the Doctor, and we even got to see a significant amount of character growth for him -- all the way from his stern, curmudgeonly, awkward beginnings in series 8 to his warmth and playfulness in The Husbands of River Song. And the series 9 episode 'Heaven Sent' -- an episode Peter Capaldi carried by himself -- is my favorite Doctor Who episode of all time.
I actually don't know classic Doctor Who at all, so I have no idea how I would rank the other Doctors. I just know that Tom Baker's Doctor is wildly popular (and I'm pretty sure he's my dad's favorite Doctor), so the A ranking for him makes sense to me.

Hi You're the first person I have discovered who agreed with my belief that (to steal your words)...his tendency to be self-absorbed,,...still rubbed me the wrong way. I am glad others could see this behind he veneer of the 'cool' thing. Many of the Doctor's (not all) can be summed up by their regeneration. Smith and Capaldi were completely selfless. Eleven's speech was so graceful. I toss and turn between 11 and 12 because both had such depth and compassion just expressed is vastly different ways. They are the perfect Ying and Yang for me. I loved Tennant but as the years have passed what I onced loved about him most now sometimes grates as excessive and again self-pitying. He almost feels as if he is showing off.
When he and Rose fell in love, so did I. Yet now I hate that storyline and wish it had not happened. The 'love' between 12 and Clara though was just as powerful but was not romantic - in fact it was much more profound than that - something some viewers do no have the capacity to understand as for most of us it comes with age. Romantic love is not the deepest form of love and involves grace and selflessness.
To be fair Ten was very graceful and selfless when he was 'honoured' to save Wilfred. Rose though and Ten were so smug in their second series together was very annoying and hard to bear. Many argue this was his character arc but I don't think I can ever accept an alien of vast intelligence of an age in the hundreds who fall romantically in love with a nineteen year old girl from Earth.

Whiitaker was terrible. Yes, the writing was bad, but she had none of the skills or qualities needed. She was utterly clueless and gave an inept and embarrassing performance. She was the most badly cast Doctor of them all... and even brilliant writing would not have disguised that. She's gone, thank god, and we'll never see her Doctor ever again.

    • @farashahanem
      @farashahanem Рік тому +3

I agree with all three of you. Tennant’s Doctor’s self-absorbed trait also rubbed me the wrong way. Not just his little speech at the end, but also how he shouted, “I could have done SO MUCH MORE!” when Donna’s grandad (was his name Will? I forgot, and I loved that character 😭) accidentally trapped himself in that chamber. Plus, the way he acted in “The Waters of Mars” at the end was quite insufferable. Sad thing is, otherwise, I really liked 10.
As for my favorite Doctor, it’s definitely a toss-up between Baker and Capaldi. Baker was my gateway Doctor as a teen, and I loved everything about him. I loved his whimsy, his Bohemian ways, and his ability to get to the heart of what was right and moral. And Peter? I love Peter so much! He has the best story arc and character growth. I wish he could have had a longer run. 😣💔💔
Sorry but not sorry, I think Jodie Whittaker’s acting was HORRENDOUS. She doesn’t have the acting chops nor the gravitas it takes to be the Doctor. Yes, a lot of it was because of the writing (she didn’t even have her own Doctor speech), but she also did not have the weight to pull off the role. Not once during her run could I look at her and say, “Ahhhh, THERE’S the Doctor.” She was SO un-Doctorish in every way. For instance, the REAL Doctor would have not only comforted Graham when he thought his cancer was coming back, he (yes, I said he, SUE ME) would have busied himself testing Graham, and find a cure if his tests turned out positive. He wouldn’t have walked away “being awkward.” Plus, 13 was absolutely insufferable and self-absorbed, virtue signaling, and putting down men every chance she got, lecturing them about their “toxic masculinity.” UGH. I think B-WHERE was very generous ranking 13 where he did. I would have shoved 13 into the Black Hole Of Rankings.

@@farashahanem Thank you Farasha for your very articulate and interesting comments. Moreso, thanks to your direct honesty I feel I can be truthful and say I thought Jodie Whitaker was a woeful Doctor. In fact she wasn't even that. She felt more like a suburban public servant than the Doctor, or as you put it un-Doctorish. For males it has been difficult to make this argument or hold such a view as so many others pile upon you calling you a sexist or bigoted. I am neither. Yes there are some extremists out there who have been vulgar, crude and down right rude about the actress but they are in the minority. Most, like me just thought she was a terrible Doctor and was an example of dreadful miscasting. Ruth for example seemed a much more Doctorish persona. Chibnall's writing was simply crap. That's really all the attention I will give to that man who almost destroyed the show.
Tom Baker well what can one say. A legend Aside from his last season he was the Doctor but then Capaldi is now right up there. I think I will classify them as best of the classic and beso of the reboot series. That way I can have my cake and eat it too.
Farasha thank you again. What a pity you didn't make the video. I too would not even put Whitaker on the list. Interestingly and tellingly all those who tell me she was a great Doctor actually never watched any of her series run!
Self absorption and pity is an very annoying personality trait and I am so happy others share that view. Farasha and Blastfromthepast could make a good Doctor and companion duo. I don't mind who takes which role. I'll be K9 and we'll take the DW world by storm!

Jody did a very good job with the stories she was given. The problem is that the stories weren't very good.
The very best thing about her era was The Timeless Child storyline. Whatever else you might think about it, it finally resolved a lot of dangling plot threads from the 4th and 7th Doctor eras.
The 4th Doctor introduced The Morbius Doctors - which the director had long confirmed were intended to be pre-Hartnell incarnations of The Doctor.
And, a plot thread from the 7th Doctor era was intended to culminate in the reveal that along with Rassilon and Omega that The Doctor was the third founder of Timelord civilization.

Honestly, 11th is overrated. Matt Smith acting was very good as we can really feel how he incarnates this new more alien like style Doctor, but not everything about him are just flowers. While his writters try to pass a good message, many of the problems in certain episodes are solved because of people and the chemistry of love. The end of seasons 5 and 6 also hit similar as one is the end of the universe (quite similar plot again, since it was the same threat during series 4 final episodes for David Tennant) and the possible end of time just because River refuses to shoot him. Honestly, series 6 final is also way too badly explained. How of sudden River has the capability to now "disable" the weapon capacities of that astronaut suit and not kill him? And how everybody thinks he's dead since it was just a "big robot" of him full of that small space justice people inside? If you watch carefully, you'll see that many things don't match well with reality, not even for a sci-fi show like Doctor Who. Just because his robot touched River to fix time again, would a mechanical copying piece have the same effect as the actual person? How can everybody just "think" he's dead now?
Series 7A was also quite dull because, although we had cooler final adventures, the dismissal of Amy and Rory in "The Angels Take Manhattan" felt pretty instataneous and didn't really value their character. The 11th already had a lack of companions and the way they got rid of the 2 ones that were the longest with him was pretty straightfoward and it started a big gap during the series transition (hence series 7B times). The final book page with Amy's letter wasn't the best ending for it as we didn't even get a farewell from Rory as well, plus including "Father Brown" as his actual father in the last episodes was quite a dumb move, as both didn't have much of a present family. The fact he also "dates" wity Amy's and Rory's daughter (Melody aka River) is quite morally doubtful. Series 7B didn't last long and we had a Doctor with a very weird and negative view of life, less energy and a new TARDIS interior and exterior without any explanation.
So well, (skipping series 5 cuz I don't want to make a whole testament) his era is pretty much way too overrated. We can get that since he was the first Doctor from "New Who" released in North America to the public, so it catched stronger. Yet, if other Doctors are watched, we can get the best out if each of them. Cristopher Eccleston with his 1 series did an amazing job on carrying a past history foward; David Tennant brings joy, variety, darkness and attempts to live in freedom to not face his regrets; Matt Smith was the guy who tried to take a step foward, not looking back and always attempting to be funny, but he was needlessly arrogant at times; and finally, Peter Capaldi, who had to face a trashy plot with annoying Clara and Danny in series 8 before going absolute bombastic in series 9 and 10 with immeasurable improvements in writing and character with his already top acting.

*throws tomatoes at screen* Smith and Tennant are equals. Now, writing and plot resolutions aside (and yeah, Moffat liked the magic of feelings solution far more than practical means) Smiths attitude, his charm, motivations, etc was shoulder to shoulder with Tennant.
Writing: Yeah, magic, but lets not skip over the terrible writing of all the doctors...specifically farting aliens, fat blob monsters, and..well just every episode with any kids involved tbh.
So here is the key...Tennant and Smith brought in a lot of new fresh eyes. Tennant for everyone, but Smith got a lot of females interested. Might have been the good looking cast overall that brought in the younger audience, and it might be a sad view of humanity that we enjoy watching younger good looking people, but it is what it is. Tennant and Smith equally did this. Capaldi, for all his merits, hit the show on a decline which only dramatically increased the decline with him being older. If he was the doctor right after Tennant, his run might have been a lot stronger ratings-wise, and then Smith could have boosted it all and kept it strong (no saving Jodie sadly unless they had full script rewrites...and even then...)
But anyhow, Capaldi deserves S tier from his strong acting...the writing was hit and miss in a lot of episodes. otherwise, this list is good. Smith and Tennant both deserve the A simply for the acting ability.

Personally I enjoyed Jodie Whittaker. I actually loved her explaining things. Her absentmindedness reminded my of myself. I'll be doing something important and I'll talk about what I eat for breakfast. I liked the silliness. It gave a wonderful break from all the seriousness. There are times I noticed that there were bits of darkness in her. But they were far and few between and I wish that was explored more.
She's not my favourite Doctor but I do like her nonetheless.

    My Opinions:
Patrick Troughton and Matt Smith are my favourites in each eras!!! I Love Paul Mcgannn, the man is Robbed in Screen Time!!! I find David Tennant, Peter Davidson and Jodie Whitaker far too Human, not Alien for this role. Tennant is overrated in both Era and in the Fanbase, he more feels too human for me...
I love that Classic Who divided in some parts, I watched a lot of shows that were like that in format.
Note about one thing one non Doctor
Who you said: My mum grew up with the 60's Batman and my brother and me loved it!!!
Jodie Whitaker hasn't clicked with me as the Doctor, and Yet I love Missy (Female Master) and another show that had a genderswaped Lead as another character, it worked...Chris Chibnall just didn't do anything for my of this Era. (And something with the initials TC was a cause...)

What is funny or ironic is a very young Chris Chibnel was on a panel during the 6th Doctor era. and he was knocking the stories. Irony? Now like I said I liked Jodie and the companions fine. The other thing Chibnel did great was introducing the Fugitive Doctor to the mix.

Not surprising that 3 and 12 are both on my list. I agree about the fugitive doctor. She WAS the doctor. I wanted to love 13. I tried so hard. It was the explain, but more. They would multi shoot it from angles and blare them all at high speeds while she talked, I think to make it more fragmented or to speed her up… but I hated it. 14 is familiar and still deciding on 15.

Jodie was destined to fail. The first time I felt the story itself was "whovian" was kerblam and sparce eps after that, but she never got dialouge that the doctor would say or do really. They treated her as a quirky space alien that was very loosely related to the actual doctor. They never allowed her to be serious and contemplative. She never seemed to project the authority of someone who is over 900 years old and has traveled all of space and time. Even her "love" story with Yaz didn't make sense. Usually, the doctor would notice the palpable tension and tell the companion that it would never work. Instead, they build up a moment and have Jodie say something like that mobile phone shouldn't be here in 1880. Let's go talk about that. That's not the doctor.

1:47 personally I’m used to watching stuff from that era so I really don’t find it slow at all, however I would still rank him at a B simply because I have a lot more glossing over the racism and sexism of the era
    SPOILERS
I mean look at the episode The Dalek Invasion Of Earth, for example. This episode includes, in my opinion, one of the best written companion departures ever, intermingled within the story we see the relationship between Susan and David develop until it culminates in a big decision at the end between staying with David or with the Doctor. But, obviously, since it’s the 60’s and women can’t have any agency, the Doctor locks her out of the Tardis and makes the decision for her. It’s sad, yes, but also feels extremely condescending and misogynistic. Even the fact that the only way the show could think of having a female character leave the show was if she found a ✨man✨! For me, Hartnell is very enjoyable, but whenever there’s this kind of sexism or racism or colonialism (ESPECIALLY in historical episodes), I just find that it takes me out of the story and reminds me that this show is outdated. Just my personal opinion though.

    • @harrysgf_real
      @harrysgf_real 5 місяців тому +1

I agree that the era can be outdated at times, but the first doctor is never outwardly racist or sexist himself (from what I can remember) and I always see him locking Susan out because he wants the best for her and sees she's old enough to be more independent. That's how I feel about it anyways

What I didn't like about Jodie's costume was not the actual clothes. I didn't mind the coat.
I didn't like the very 2020's jewellery excess. Remember she is a Timelord who over 2000 years old (according to the last mention on air). Now let's stop and think a minute. 2000 YEARS and she just happens to like a fashion pertinent to maybe a twenty year period. That is a 1% likelihood. Or in other words after living more than 2000 years there was a one year period in her history that she was fond of. I quite like your list. I would swap McCoy with Matt Smith and would put Troughton up to B as his costume with the chequered trousers just reflected who he was so well. It's a difficult task, for Eccleston as a case in point. DW was on the comeback and the masses would n ot have been ready for a more typical outlandish outfit.
We also know all the actors who JNT made feature question marks were not happy. Thinking about that for a moment doesn't reflect well for JNT as it meant even though he knew it was an unpopular choice about six months in from Tom in burgundy the producer still made the nest two actors have the same symbol featured dominantly on their outfit.
Matt's second outfit (the purplish coat one) deserves to go into A or maybe top tier.

Over the years, I've found that watching the different Doctors have changed in my estimation of them, especially taking into account for BAD SCRIPTS. Poor Colin Baker was given horrid things--it's hard to think of a single story that was great the whole way through. It's a shame, too, because from his introduction at the end of Caves of Androzani, those first five minutes had me completely buying into him as The Doctor. I agree with you about the Second Doctor; the only reason I feel I know much about him at all comes from the Novelizations that Target Books put out. I found Sylvester McCoy comparatively unlikable, initially, and I found his stories relatively hard to watch; that said, he had some rotten stories that he had to carry.
And you know, even as I say that, Peter Capaldi had to carry HORRIBLE stories, and he bore them gracefully, brilliantly, to the point where even KILL THE MOON was almost watchable. Similarly, Jodi had to do much the same thing, and she did, only not as well. To be honest, though, she was caught in a horrible trap that she couldn't escape by gnawing off her limbs. Scripts under Chibnall frequently were a question of "Tell, don't show," and, of course, the way everything was presented didn't really give her much room to succeed. They could have kept her mostly asexual, like in her first season, and people would have complained that she wasn't given any romantic arcs; they could have given her a male romantic interest, and that would have been badly criticized; in the end, they played toward a thing with Yaz, and of course, that, too, brought outrage from a faction. There was just no winning route for her. I would have loved to see how better writers (and a better showrunner) would have done with them.

John Hurt: A (He absolutely sells the war doctor)
Paul McGann: S he's the reason to watch the movie his smile and cheery disposition are infectious and his BF stories are top tier.
7: tv B (big finish A) 7 only really got good when he became the master manipulator in the later episodes of his run.
6: C Same problem as capaldi, good doctor shit writers. (Only good in big finish)
5: D (used to be my favorite) not terribly memorable and incredibly subdued.
4: A I think he's over rated but I can't deny he plays the part well and there's a reason he's so popular
3: S dresses like a pimp, complete badass, and has a ton of great stories
2: D I can't think of any episodes that stick out other than war games which is admittedly damn good.

Interesting that you demoted Troughton and Jo Martin because of lack of screen time, but that's not a problem with Paul McGann. Overall a reasonable list though I don't personally agree with the rankings.
I'd demote Peter Capaldi by two ranks because some of the stories were simply awful, and it was in his reign that the story's quality took a nosedive, but promote him one rank as he's such an excellent actor and made even dreadful stories watchable, so for me, he'd end up at the bottom of the A tier. He was excellent in the Doctor Who spin-off series Torchwood: The Children of Earth - which was about the only good episode in that series (probably because it ripped off Quatermass)
In the S tier I'd have Tom Baker and David Tennant, as the best of the two eras, with Baker just in the lead simply because his reign was so long, and because he became such an iconic Doctor.
Also on tier A I'd have Pertwee, Troughton and Eccleston, with Eccleston at the top followed by Troughton. I definitely wouldn't have Sylvester McCoy on this tier, for me he'd be at the top of C. So for A that would be Eccleston, Troughton, Pertwee and Capaldi.
On the B tier I'd have Matt Smith at the top, along with Paul McGann (who was way better than the hand he was given) followed by William Hartnell, whilst the C tier, as I said Sylvester McCoy and Peter Davison, both of whom were let down by the stories at this time, when the BBC wanted rid of Doctor Who. They could both have been great doctors..
Colin Baker, yes on the D tier, along with John Hurt and Jo Martin, with Jodie Whittaker on the naughty step, and lucky to be there., Troughton
