If you liked my ranking of all the Doctors, I recently put out a ranking of all the Masters! ua-cam.com/video/RZemn9vnOs8/v-deo.htmlsi=4Zk5kNuuk-0yL5NI
I literally quit watching the show during Capaldi's second year (jumping back in for Whittaker's first two years before dropping out again), and while that had a lot to do with the approach the show was taking, something that went back to Smith's tenure and represented an accumulation of discontentment on my part, Capaldi's depiction of the Doctor never clicked with me. I don't see what the fuss is about, and he's one of only four Doctors I'd say I don't particularly care for.
Peter capaldii as the doctor is the Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes type of performance. As time goes on it gets better and better. Victory feels earned, rather than just "I'm the doctor" *waves sonic screwdriver*. Great ability to both command a room and share a stage, while also bouncing very well off basically every character he interacts with. Incredibly underrated doctor
@@AidanGulaMedia “So you have chosen... death.” 😂. Good video man! Was surprised to see you also put Series 6 11 under the same bracket as Series 7 11 but yeah - Capaldi is rightfully at the top! (No surprises at the bottom!)
When Big Finish is taken into account, the Sixth and Eighth Doctors are the best of the classic era in my opinion. Allowing Colin Baker to play the Doctor the way he wanted and giving him good material gets him to shine. Giving Paul McGann some more adventures really shows his versatility as an actor since he is able to play the romantic, whacky scientist, space hobo, and cold sides of the Doctor with effortless ease.
I'm so happy to see Peter Capaldi (you may know him as Sid's dad from Skins lol) at no.1 He came to see my theatres production on our opening night and he was such a pleasure to be around after the show where he was nice enough to give us all advice. Absolute legend and deserves to be recognised as the amazing rebellious Doctor
I think that people often look at the handful of supposedly REALLY BAD episodes in Capaldi’s era like Kill the Moon, Sleep No More, The Eaters of Light etc. (I think those episodes they’re just average) and say that his whole era was like that.
Exactly...every doctor who era had a few duds, Capaldi’s is just hated cus it’s different...he doesn’t have the more human nature of Ten, or the overarching series arcs of Matt, and this turned many off...but they missed the point, his era was always abt the character of the doctor and he had the best character arc!
My ranking: 1.4th doctor 2.12th doctor 3.7th doctor 4.3rd doctor 5.11th doctor 6. 9th doctor 7.2nd doctor 8.13th doctor 9.6th doctor 10.10th doctor 11.1st doctor 12.8th doctor 13.5th doctor
I've been watching a lot of ratings lately and I'm so thrilled to find another that has 12 in the top spot!! I can't express how much I love Capaldi's era.
Yep I agree, Even though Tom was 'my' Doctor, Capaldi was superb in the role. Unfortunately the Beeb thought otherwise and imo his tenure suffered because of it and I will always hold that against them. It also helps that Capaldi is big Who fan (we both contributed to the same Who fanzine back in the day would you believe) and so he genuinely loves this show and It shows in his performances. I still miss him. :(
Pat Troughton is the best Doctor of Classic Who and most certainly of whole Doctor Who. It is a shame that so much of his great acting is missing, probably forever. Ans Chris Eccleston is the one who does best in showing his mood changes within a second, from playfully childish to bitterly serious. Thus, Eccleston is the best Doctor of Modern Who, unfortunately having only one season.
I feel that Troughton was the best Doctor, in large part because he was the one who made the character what we saw from then on. Hartnell's Doctor was very different, being somewhat less curious, heroic and affable. Troughton set the stage for all that followed him. Of course, he also inhabited the role better than any other actor, with the possible exception of Tom Baker.
It's always sad when we have to say goodbye but capaldi leaving hit way harder then any other. He will always be the definitive doctor to me and I'm so glad that others appreciate him as much as I do.
For me, it goes like this: 14). The 13th Doctor - Jodie Whittaker 13). The War Doctor - John Hurt 12). The 5th Doctor - Peter Davison 11). The 6th Doctor - Colin Baker 10). The 11th Doctor - Matt Smith 9). The 12th Doctor - Peter Capaldi 8). The 7th Doctor - Sylvester McCoy 7). The 8th Doctor - Paul McGann 6). The 10th Doctor - David Tennant 5). The 9th Doctor - Christopher Eccleston 4). The 1st Doctor - William Hartnell 3). The 4th Doctor - Tom Baker 2). The 3rd Doctor - Jon Pertwee 1). The 2nd Doctor - Patrick Troughton
@@theevildalek5425 Never feel you have to apologise for liking a Doctor. It's all to do with when you were born and what kind of impression the actor made to you at the time. Despite having worked on and off on all of Sylvester's seasons on the show I respect him but he's far from being from being my fav. :)
4this mine and always will be, but any list that has him top 5 is always a good one (unless you put Jodie there, then we will have to agree to disagree)
My ranking: 1) Matt Smith 2) Tom Baker 3) Paul McGann 4) Peter Capaldi 5) Patrick Troughton 6) Sylvester McCoy 7) Christopher Eccleston 8) Jodie Whittaker 9) David Tennant 10) Colin Baker 11) Peter Davison 12) Jon Pertwee (Only saw one story so far) 13) William Hartnell (Ditto) 14) John Hurt (Haven't seen enough of him....I loved Engines of War, though) 15) Jo Martin (I haven't seen enough of her yet...)
Peter Capaldi is brilliant and I am thrilled you put him first. Young teenage girls didn't like him because they wanted to keep the youthful eye candy of the previous two incarnations. Capaldi's acting is sublime and he is so unique from the others. He cared more than any before despite what people say. Everything that makes Capaldi brilliant is what is lacking in Whittaker's characterisation. He has such sincerity, is so authentic and not a caricature. He had both beauty (not romantic but the real thing) and power in his personality without the arrogance that other carnations sometimes overindulged in. His speeches were delivered with such ferocity and passion that you can't imagine many of the other incarnations coming close. As you stated Capaldi was so brilliant he could even make crap scripts watchable. With Bill and Nardole we had a Tardis team equal in liking to Sarah, Harry and Tom. in his season nine the compassion he showed for Clara (who I know many didn't like, but I thought she was a delight) was incredibly moving. What I loved most was between these two characters is that they portrayed what genuine love in it's purest state is. It is caring about the other so far much more than yourself. It is a notion that is not easy to convey on a television show and there is a danger it will come across as weird, even inappropriate. However the two leads pulled it off beautifully. They showed that substantial lows, if overcome can only lead to a stronger connection and that really is what I mean by the word 'love' in this posting. it is a powerful connection, an understanding and value for someone you care about deeply. Capaldi brought such an abundance of emotions to the screen. His final episodes he really shone. For those who did not like this incarnation i would recommend you give him a second try. I think if I had to choose one word to subscribe Capaldi's Doctor is 'depth'. A depth of every emotion yet could also could be lighthearted, But no other actor has been able to pull off the depth of the character better than Capaldi. At the middle age of 51 years and he will always be my favourite Doctor.
Difficult but here we go.... 1. Matt Smith 2. Tom Baker 3. David Tennant. 4. Patrick Troughton 5. Peter Capaldi 6. Christopher Eccleston 7. Peter Davison 8. John Hurt 9. John Pertwee 10. Sylvester McCoy 11. William Hartnell 12. Jodie Whittaker 12. Paul McCann 13. Colin Baker
During his era Capaldi was criticized. And now he is worshipped. Jodie Whittaker's era is criticized, but to me she was a great doctor, I will miss her energy, her passion, her warmth, and how emotional she was. The flux was a great season and The Power of the Doctor was a great episode
I would say the 11th and 12th were more or less equal in terms of quality. Both had their own quirks that they made a great portrayal. But yes. The hell bent episode was crazy and the best episode of the entire show.
@@AidanGulaMedia I mean both in a line. Gave a really strong context to the entire story and laid the foundation for the hybrid concept and the lie of the time Lords. But the 13th doctors final episode kind of ruined it. It wasn't even jodie's fault in this context. The story itself should have been written in such a way that this would be disclosed at the weakest point of the doctor and all they did was hang her in a bunch of circles sitting and hearing a story and even after that all it took was just a so called mind blast along with writing a situation in the story where they showed her slightly cowardly to the point an old man blows himself up. And all of this just to end up with her being in a prison. Like come on.
For me, my ranking is: 14). The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whitaker) 13). The War Doctor (John Hurt) 12). The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) 11). The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) 10). The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) 9). The Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) 8). The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) 7). The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) 6). The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) 5). The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) 4). The First Doctor (William Hartnell) 3). The Forth Doctor (Tom Baker) 2). The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) 1). The Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton)
Thank you some understands twelves character and I loved him for his character development. I like his nature of always trying to do the right thing, he cared about people. I hope we see more of him one day.
Actually finally seeing someone have legit criticism for Jodie's doctor is something I appreciate very much instead of the usual overdramatic answers people give. Anyway, my favorite is McCoy due to his manipulative persona and he has some of the best stories in books also I disagree I think he is dark in season 25 too the clip you showed from the greatest show in the galaxy(one of my favorite stories) is not like that to be childish but mostly to show the the doctor not winning the higher-ups(the audience and the BBC higher-ups in this case) with his iold tricks and then trying something new and they would still not be pleased but in the end he survives anyway the same way the show managed to survive for another season during it's worst time and how it managed to go on even in the wilderness years and then it got revived.
14) Colin Baker 13) Jodi Whitaker 12) Sylvester McCoy 11) Patric Troughton 10) Peter Davison 9) John Pertwee 8) War doctor 7) Paul M gan 6) William Hartnell/ David Bradley 5) Tom Baker 4) Christopher Ecltson 3) Matt Smith 2) Peter Capaldi 1) David Tenant
My personal list if anyones interested: 1. Tom Baker 2. Peter Capaldi 3. Jon Pertwee 4. Patrick Troughton 5. Paul McGann 6. David Tennant 7. Christopher Eccleston 8. Sylvester McCoy 9. John Hurt 10. Matt Smith 11. William Hartnell 12. Peter Davison 13. Colin Baker 14. Jodie Whittaker It changes almost every day lol
My current ranking (as it often changes): 1. Peter Capaldi 2. Sylvester McCoy 3. William Hartnell 4. Christopher Eccleston 5. David Tennant 6. Jon Pertwee 7. Tom Baker 8. Patrick Troughton 9. John Hurt 10. Matt Smith 11. Paul McGann 12. Peter Davison 13. Colin Baker 14. Jodie Whittaker
My list : 13 : 2 nd Doctor 12 : 1st Doctor 11 : 8th Doctor 10 : 4th Doctor 9 : 3th Doctor 8 : 6th Doctor 7 : 5th Doctor 6 : 11th Doctor 5 : 9th Doctor 4 : 13th Doctor 3 : 7th Doctor 2 : 10th Doctor 1 : 12th Doctor
I may not agree with all of your placements, but this is honestly the best doctors ranking I've ever watched. Very well made and commentated, keep up the great work 👍🏻it would be nice to see a doctor who eras ranked. See if that might ulter the list slightly.
I love 11 but that’s the Doctor I started the show with, I was there to see 12’s entrance and exit live so I’m attacked to him, and I overall just love 10’s performance.
My ranking would be... 1. Tom Baker by lightyears.... if that man tells you he is an alien, you believe it, no doubt 2. Paul McGann/ Sir John Hurt , also both had only audio Series, but just wow. You can see the Doctor infront of you thats how good they are 3. Peter Capaldi, 4. Sylvester McCoy, 5. Christopher Ecclestone the audios wow. To me "Girl deconstructed" is one of the best Doctor Who storys ever / Colin Baker, the Audios are awesome, he nails the part, they improved so much of the 6th Doctor, and show how good he is, given propper material. 6. Matt Smith, 7.William Hartnell 8. David Tannent, WAY to overrated, way to human 9. Jon Pertwee 10. Jo Martin She clicks almost on the spot, thats the Doctor no doubt! I hate the Tmeles Child BS, but her Doctor is awesome. 11. Patrick T. havent seen much of him, maybe higher next time. You can flip this and 12...not sure yet. 12. Jodie Withaker Again, she is not bad! But she never clicks, hope she gets Audios too to show her potential with people who CARE about the show and give her propper material to work with 13. Peter Davison....he doesnt click for me, mostly because there is no good chemestry with companions, most of them are annoying tbh.
tom is mine and always will be, but I love your top 4 and agree with it, the order of the other three depends on my mood, and I have watched from nearly the beginning, I just wasnt old enough for 1st
Thank you I love this video so much, but CAPALDI for the reasons you stated is my favourite by far my favourite, David a close second like you sed too but Capaldi is just "THE" doctor to me
For Me born in the 70s there's only Tom baker Christopher eccleston and David Tennant that have a mix of warmth and power that make a human being watching feel safe. I preferred Kimba the white lion as a child, my brother and my mum who agrees with with me, she's 73 so she's pretty much over the years seen them as part of her life since the first doctor, oh and she had a massive crush on Paul magann* I loved John hurt as the doctor, straight away you look into his eyes and want to know him. But I stand by my 3 choices David Tennant for me as feeling safe when he was there, oh and Tom baker getting my attention as a child because he was funny and nice, Christopher eccelston for being so powerful and sweet. For my mum it's the first Doctor then Christopher eccelston Paul magann then the others. But for my grandchildren, they started watching David Tennant with me, but they loved Matt Smith, and now no one even thinks about it, which is pretty sad considering how long it's been in my mums life my life, it's not recognisable anymore, not to us. I'd like to know how English kids feel about doctor who. But I'll always thank the UK for introducing us to Doctor who 💞💞💞💞 Christopher Eccelston didn't want to keep playing the doctor 😒🥀🕯.
Your ranking (specifically your top 5) is LITERALLY the same thing I have and for most of the same reasons too, so I'm genuinely SO HAPPY that someone 1) agrees with me 2) loves 12 as much as I do! edit: actually I love the second doc so much I'd prob put him 3rd for personal fav, but overall for what i'd say are the best doctors minus sentimental value I'd prob say this ranking too 😂
I totally agree, Capaldi has always been my favourite Doctor, but I personally love Sylvester McCoy, not sure who hasn't been praising his audio dramas, but I've always found people rate them higher than his run on TV. Take a look at The Architects of History, A Death in the Family, UNIT Dominion, The Enemy of the Daleks, The Fearmonger, The Two Masters and the utterly phenomenal 'Master'. These audio dramas know what makes McCoy great, it's his cunning, Machiavellian, borderline evil nature.
Capaldi the best, that's not just 1 leg being pulled, it's both legs, all toes & fingers 1 - TOM BAKER (is the ultimate being of the Doctor 2/3 Matt Smith/David Tennant (can't decide which order), 4 - Patrick Troughton ?? 5 - Paul McGann
I’ve only watched Modern Who and here’s my ranking and reasonings. I’ll start from worst and end with the best 13: Whittaker does improve overall, but my god is she incredibly weak in her role. Not much to say otherwise 10: Yeah this might be an unpopular Opinion but tbh the gap between 13 and everyone else is massive but that doesn’t mean 10 doesn’t have problems. I love his run, and Series 4 is spectacular. But if you were to boil him down to a single sentence here’s what it could be: “Boy do I love having Rose with me and I’m so sad and upset that I can’t get over the feeling because I’m constantly missing her” Like, everything else is great, but the Romance has got to go 11: I put 11 above 10 just cause he doesn’t do romance except with Clara. But even then it’s handled WAY better than 10 and Rose. 11 is fun, awkward, quirky, and he has a lot of heart. He is the shining star in his sort of messy run. 9: One series, one run. 9 is absolutely Fantastic and RTD knocked it out of the park. He is mostly higher than 11 just cause 11 has minor flaws but tbh Eccleston to me does so much with how little he had. I love him and wished we had more. 12: Is it even a competition? (Yes it is but come on we all agree Capaldi is THE DOCTOR) Edit: I forgot to mention River exists so… there’s that for 11. Their chemistry is a bit overrated but it just works just because they’re husband and wife. It still makes my point valid as outside of his own wife, he only really has chemistry with Clara. So his ranking doesn’t change
@@Milk88488 The thing is he still has his moments. Like Series 4 is spectacular and did so much with him. The competition is just stiff and to me I just really roll my eyes over the more I rewatch episodes with him kissing every girl he sees. Like, I genuinely just sighed and shut down when he and Rose kissed at the end of Journeys end. It wasn’t him but it was still 10.
Peter Capaldi is MASSIVELY overrated. John Hurt was a better Doctor in one episode than Capaldi was in his entire first season. So was Matt Smith for that matter and Smith was only half Capaldi's age when he joined the show.
11)David Tennant(He had a chance not to be the last. Season 29 is my all-time favorite season, but season 30(my 2nd least favorite season, 1st least favorite season 18,3rd is 28) happened). 10)Peter Davison 9)Matt Smith 8)Jon Pertwee 7)Christopher Eccleston 6)William Hartnell 5)Colin Baker 4)Patrick Troughton 3)Sylvester McCoy 2)Peter Capaldi 1)Tom Baker
For me, 12th Doctor is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, War, 9, 10, and 11 all together. Definitely not equal parts of them, but taking the qualities of them that are most compatible with each other and blending them so seamlessly. I can revisit his era, especially in series 10 and can tell he’s the same person as all that came before. I feel like my take might be popular or agreed with😅
I would low 10's ranking and rise 6/7's ranking, but otherwise it is a great ranking that I agree with! Also I will die on a hill saying there's not a single bad Capaldi episode
My ranking and why: 14: Jodie Whittaker boring and dull and nothing new with character 13: William hartnell love hime and it’s not his fault but the episodes are very slow 12: War doctor I thing he did great but it kinda of annoys that he doesn’t play a doctor who has done terrible things, he’s still playing the doctor, but the performance is still great 11: Colin baker I feel bad as he really cared but it was JNT who ruined it 10: Matt smith always thought he was a bit too childish and not serious enough but when he is serious it’s brilliant 9: Peter Davison love this doctor but didn’t leave much of a impact 8: Paul mcgann don’t need to say a lot if he had more tv time probs top 3 7: Patrick troughton goofy but strict as well love most of his episodes and I reckon the most traits taken from the character is from the 2nd 6: Jon pertwee amazing doctor and brought some of the best villains felt like an action star it was very good 5: sylvester McCoy similar to Matt smith but done right silly but when serious it’s brilliant 4: David tennant yes Ik he’s not in the top 3 but it’s due to the other 3 just being a bit better for me, but this still an amazing doctor the romantic doctor with a darkness never knowing if you can trust him 3: Tom Baker: made the role iconic but also someone you don’t know if u can trust but being so silly u can’t help but love him 2: Peter capaldi just is the doctor the character development from knowing if he is good man to being happy with who he is, in a harsh way he is the most kind doctor, the zygon speech is the best of all time 1: Christopher Eccleston it may of only been on season but there’s so much in it the character development from a man who did horrific things and being a warrior to finally accepting who he is and becoming the doctor again, not only that he’s a doctor who shows fear and doesn’t always win the scene in the doctor dances where he saves everyone I can see what it means to him or the parting of the ways where he doesn’t do the act and accepts he’s doctor even though he has every reason to do it as everyone has died and except rose and thought jack was dead, he has nothing left to lose but still knows who he is and accepts it. My opinion obviously love to here if u agree or disagree and love to know why 🙂
Yeah I agree peter is my favorite both because of nostalgia as he was my first and just because of his great series I also love David Tennants episode as I'm sure I don't have to explain which episodes of his were jncredible

It will be interesting how the next doctor will be in the list. I have left a ? question mark in number 17 because, I did not want to spoil or reveal the surprise and Mystery to anyone watching around the 6th Doctor's era.
John Hurt is the best actor who ever played the Doctor. Just look at his resume. Plus, he was able to pull off a retconned Doctor who wasn't supposed to exist during the most important milestone in Doctor Who history whilst sharing the screen with 2 of the most popular Doctors of all time AND having Tom Baker waiting in the wings. There's no way Peter Capaldi could have managed that. At best, Capaldi would have been overshadowed by David Tennant and Matt Smith and at worst he would have just been thoroughly unlikeable like he was in Season 8.
@@tomnorton4277 seem like such a hater...we’re talking abt the best actors to play the doctor who weren’t just one offs for an episode...and no... capaldi would have just been overlooked not outshone...why because of fangirls. Thats’s it, in terms of acting he could have easily matched david and smith. He could have outshone them in fact. He’s a better actor than both...he’d be overlooked but not outshone
@@brobro9169 Wrong. John Hurt showed Capaldi how it's done and not only was he much older but he only had one full episode to pull off the Doctor. He did it better in that single episode than Capaldi did in his entire debut season.
Here is mine 1. Tennant 2. Capldi 3. McGann 4. T Baker 5. McCoy 6. C Baker 7. Eccleston 8. Hurt 9. Whittaker 10. Troughton 11. Martin 12. Pertwee 13. Hartnel 14. Davidson 15. Smith Bring the hate everyone
I admit I am biased towards the classic era. 14 Jodie Whittaker 13 John Hurt 12 Paul McGann 11 Sylvester McCoy 10 Matt Smith 9 Christopher Eccleston 8 Peter Capaldi 7 David Tennant 6 Patrick Troughton 5 Jon Pertwee 4 Colin Baker 3 William Hartnell 2 Tom Baker 1 Peter Davison.
realistically 7 and 8 are by miles the "darkest" incarnations in large part because they are by miles the most complicated yet well fleshed out characters out of them. Granted this is largely down to their 90s/00s material but 7 was fully formed in season 25 (yeah not sure why this guy thought the "darker" version only started in Battlefield but hey) and y'know the vast majority of 8 is outside of the TV show (which, being pedantic, actually means the TVM and the modern series since they aren't the same show, they are different productions). I also don't agree at all with the "new who character development driven classic who adventure of the week" thing, that's more just the 70s/early-mid80s seasons. There are two very different versions of Doctor Who, the version new who is based on (the 4th Doctor era is the best example, it's adventure based and pushes the whole 'quirky' thing and so on) and then there's 60s Who and the McCoy-McGann eras (obviously with McGann this is down to the books and novels). That version places far more emphasis on being lost in space and time, the vastness and the weirdness of the unknown around them. It has more of an emphasis on the horror elements and it does have relatively character driven plots (Ian/Barbara, Seven/Ace, Susan's development, the Second Doctor and the Time Lords, etc.) as opposed to the average 4th Doctor story, but it is still about travellers lost in space - not a "lonely god" and his companions of prophecies like in New Who. And because despite being fundamentally based on 70s/early-mid80s Who, New Who is another totally different version down to it's soap elements and it's very dramatic stories and it's almost total divorcement from being lost in space being scared and lost and having a Doctor who was a danger to the companion, as opposed to the cuddly best friend or love interest. My point being, I don't think things like "13th Doctor can't command the room" or having a more romantic Doctor are really great points against or for different Doctors. To each their own and all the rest but I think rankings like this almost always "suffer" from being based on any given fan's individual perspective of what Doctor Who is or should be that isn't generally accurate to the different versions of the show that do exist. Which is why we ever got a revival of the 60s Who fundamentals with McCoy in the first place, because those making that era didn't watch 70s Who and only remembered the 60s originals. Side note, totally personal, I think the 10th Doctor era is incredibly mediocre outside of series 3 which is great.
I vaguely remember Jon Pertwee's incarnation, but was 8 or 9 when Tom Baker assumed the mantle, so he was my Doctor. The Best. Forever. Or so I thought. By the time Peter Davison came along I was teenager and waaaay too cool for Dr Who. Glanced in on the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh (when nobody was looking) and kinda liked Sylvester McCoy but never got too involved. By the time Christopher Eccleston arrived I had three boys, the oldest of whom was a teenager and waaaaaaay too cool for you-know-who. The two younger ones loved it, and magnificent David Tennant even more, remaining THE centrepiece of our family's viewing even as catch-up and streaming began to appear. Saturday evening with the Doctor was a date (after which their poor Mum was left to watch Strictly on her own). By halfway through the Matt Smith era - who I thought was marvellous - all three lads were up and away, living their own lives. We'd still exchange the odd text after an episode, but there were hundreds - and occasionally thousands - of miles between our residences. If we managed to have them all home for Christmas the day was structured around the Dr Who special. Just like old times. Then came Capaldi. Having only really taken note of him as Malcolm Tucker, and though I thought he was magnificent in that role, I was astonished. Then I wasn't. He was perfect casting. For me, he took the character of the Doctor to new heights and since I was much closer to his age bracket than Matt Smith's - and he now had an accent like mine(!) - I related to Capaldi's performance like nothing that had come before. For me it was Shakespearian in its depth and range, somehow always evolving while manifesting some essential restless core to the soul of this character. Simply one of the great dramatic performances in a long form TV role, up there with Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, Elizabeth Moss as Peggy Olson, and a handful of others. Capaldi brought so much to the role, reaching back into his childhood, reflecting back on his own journey from wide-eyed kid enthralled by this unique, unexpected to the reality - odd choice of word, I know, but bear with - to the reality of how hard and how exhausting it is to actually live a life to those impossible standards. Capaldi could show fabulous comic chops - as in the Caretaker episode - or the raw intensity of Face the Raven / Heaven Sent. In most episodes he could give glimpses of both and luch, much more besides. Peter Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor was always enthralling, commanding and, above all, compelling. It was (if you'll forgive the pun) a complete Masterclass.
Great video and explanations for your ranking. My own ranking would go like this: C.Baker Whittaker Martin Hurt Davison Pertwee McGann Smith Tennant Eccleston Capaldi McCoy Hartnell T.Baker Troughton
I agree. Capaldi is the best new who Doctor. However I think Tennant lacks character development as there’s nothing that shows his alien side (he is too human) compared to 12 I think he had the right balance of human and alien. Tenant is my least favourite doctor. I think 13 has had character development as the timeless child and the flux. Has given a lot of character development not the best but not the worst either. 11 is the opposite too alien and 9 almost had the right balance. I believe the doctors should all have character development and a equal balance between human and alien. 12s doctor I can relate to a lot he was the first doctor I saw. However his era also helped me through the end of school and college a lot. As I struggled a lot back then etc... I also hope he did eventually join big finish too.
I really think the 5th Doctor could have been better if he started to have some traumatic effects from Earthshock. Like after Adric dies, he starts becoming somewhat overly protective in regards to his companions and less forgiving/more pessimistic towards his enemies.
My favorite was the 4th doc, Tom Baker. I remember every day after school and after dinner, I would turn on PBS and get comfortable and watch Doctor Who.
Another member of the 'Capaldi was the best Doctor' club here. I was born in the late 70s so Davison was 'my' Doctor but Capaldi would become my all time favourite.
If you want a great 7th Doctor audio drama check out Robophobia a sequel to the 4th Doctor's Robots of Death and it introduces Liv Chenka who has become the 8th Doctor's companion to this day. I just finished Dark Eyes and I highly recommend it. He starts very low after the death of his prior companion Lucy Miller and tries to regain a sense of hope. The 8th Doctor of the Time War would not be who he is without the pivot point of Dark Eyes.
This is a great ranking of the Doctors. Of course no one will agree with the rankings, but all should agree on the reasoning behind it. Terry @ Tardis Spider
Disagree with the rankings but nonetheless respect it. Your video was great. My rankings would be - 14th Jon Pertwee; 13th - Sylvester McCoy; 12th - Colin Baker; 11th - Matt Smith; 10th - John Hurt; 9th - William Hartnell; 8th - Jodie Whittaker; 7th- Paul McGann; 6th - Peter Calpaldi; 5th - Tom Baker; 4th Christopher Eccleston; 3rd - David Tennant; 2nd - Patrick Troughton; 1st - Peter Davison.
I agree with doctor no. 12, 10, 4, 9, 11. This entire essay is very accurate to my ranking. Jodie is a brilliant actress, but piss chibnall ruined the writing
If you liked my ranking of all the Doctors, I recently put out a ranking of all the Masters!

Definitely gonna check that out.
So happy you put 12th on the top spot. I love his character development and I miss him playing the doctor.
Doctor Who needed Capaldi. Words cannot express how much enjoyment I derived from watching 12 rip into his surroundings.
Matt Smith is my Number 1, but I appreciate the love you give Capaldi. He was magnificent!
I Agree With You! I Think Matt Smith Is THE Doctor! No.1 Too! ❤❤
For me Peter Capaldi encapsulates the doctor.
Perfect word!
@@mr.gadfly6249 What poor scripts?
@@mayotango1317nearly the entirety of series 8 was disappointing
I literally quit watching the show during Capaldi's second year (jumping back in for Whittaker's first two years before dropping out again), and while that had a lot to do with the approach the show was taking, something that went back to Smith's tenure and represented an accumulation of discontentment on my part, Capaldi's depiction of the Doctor never clicked with me. I don't see what the fuss is about, and he's one of only four Doctors I'd say I don't particularly care for.
@@madophelia4322what didn’t you like about it?
Peter capaldii as the doctor is the Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes type of performance. As time goes on it gets better and better. Victory feels earned, rather than just "I'm the doctor" *waves sonic screwdriver*. Great ability to both command a room and share a stage, while also bouncing very well off basically every character he interacts with. Incredibly underrated doctor
11 in 10th place. My disappointment is immeasurable and my night is ruined. Fr though, other than that, I practically agree with all of this
I kid you not, when I was editing 10th place, I said to myself "Will won't like this"
@@AidanGulaMedia “So you have chosen...
I'm so happy to see Peter Capaldi (you may know him as Sid's dad from Skins lol) at no.1
He came to see my theatres production on our opening night and he was such a pleasure to be around after the show where he was nice enough to give us all advice.
Absolute legend and deserves to be recognised as the amazing rebellious Doctor
Absolutely the best doctor...
I believe Kill the Moon would be 10 times better if it had hatched into the Star Whale from The Beast Below.
Whoah whoah people don't like Eaters of Light ? I thought it was delightful mix of classic and nu who with a lovely pagan vibe to it.

YESS I'M SO HAPPY YOU PUT CAPALDI AT FIRST, HE'S ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVOURITE DOCTOR AND MY DOCTOR
He never had a episode called The Timeless Children.
I'm perpetually back and forth between 10 and 12, and that probably won't ever change.
Just realised I accidentally credited Fear Her to RTD... I'm sorry if I caused any offence, Russell 😔
Never fear....russell is here
I’ve watched so many Doctor Who ranking videos the one consistent thing all those videos shared was that nobody liked Jodie’s doctor.
For me, it goes like this:
14). The 13th Doctor - Jodie Whittaker
13). The War Doctor - John Hurt
12). The 5th Doctor - Peter Davison
11). The 6th Doctor - Colin Baker
10). The 11th Doctor - Matt Smith
9). The 12th Doctor - Peter Capaldi
8). The 7th Doctor - Sylvester McCoy
7). The 8th Doctor - Paul McGann
6). The 10th Doctor - David Tennant
5). The 9th Doctor - Christopher Eccleston
4). The 1st Doctor - William Hartnell
3). The 4th Doctor - Tom Baker
2). The 3rd Doctor - Jon Pertwee
1). The 2nd Doctor - Patrick Troughton
Sylvester McCoy ahead of Capaldi genuinely hurts me
@@AidanGulaMedia Sorry...I really like Season 25 & 26, which I can’t say the same for Series 8 & 9

4this mine and always will be, but any list that has him top 5 is always a good one (unless you put Jodie there, then we will have to agree to disagree)
My ranking:

2) Tom Baker
3) Paul McGann
4) Peter Capaldi
5) Patrick Troughton
6) Sylvester McCoy
7) Christopher Eccleston
8) Jodie Whittaker

14) John Hurt (Haven't seen enough of him....I loved Engines of War, though)
15) Jo Martin (I haven't seen enough of her yet...)
My top 3 doctors are Baker, Tennant, and Capaldi. Awesome video! Amazing this show has been around for more than half a century!

Yes, 12 was great. He was amazing, had depth, and had an amazing multi-series arc.
Heaven Sent do you mean? Hell Bent wasn't great
@@AidanGulaMedia I mean both in a line.
Both Heaven Sent and Hell Bent are masterpieces in my opinion.
My personal favourite is either Matt Smith or Patrick Troughton :)

I love Greatest Show in the Galaxy. An absolute classic you have named there.

@@AidanGulaMedia awsome! Can't wait to see
The last two seasons of Capaldi are amazing and among the very best of all Doctor Who
YES! You like Planet of Giants too! It's so underrated!
It's so much fun!

5. Christopher Ecclestone the audios wow. To me "Girl deconstructed" is one of the best Doctor Who storys ever / Colin Baker, the Audios are awesome, he nails the part, they improved so much of the 6th Doctor, and show how good he is, given propper material.
6. Matt Smith,

11. Patrick T. havent seen much of him, maybe higher next time. You can flip this and 12...not sure yet.
12. Jodie Withaker Again, she is not bad! But she never clicks, hope she gets Audios too to show her potential with people who CARE about the show and give her propper material to work with

Pertwee was my first doctor and was my favourite until capaldi 😎
Capaldi the best, that's not just 1 leg being pulled, it's both legs, all toes & fingers
1 - TOM BAKER (is the ultimate being of the Doctor 2/3 Matt Smith/David Tennant (can't decide which order),
4 - Patrick Troughton ?? 5 - Paul McGann
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO RECOGNISES HIS YODA LAUGH
I’ve only watched Modern Who and here’s my ranking and reasonings. I’ll start from worst and end with the best
13: Whittaker does improve overall, but my god is she incredibly weak in her role. Not much to say otherwise
10: Yeah this might be an unpopular Opinion but tbh the gap between 13 and everyone else is massive but that doesn’t mean 10 doesn’t have problems. I love his run, and Series 4 is spectacular. But if you were to boil him down to a single sentence here’s what it could be: “Boy do I love having Rose with me and I’m so sad and upset that I can’t get over the feeling because I’m constantly missing her”
Like, everything else is great, but the Romance has got to go
11: I put 11 above 10 just cause he doesn’t do romance except with Clara.
(Yes it is but come on we all agree Capaldi is THE DOCTOR)
Edit: I forgot to mention River exists so… there’s that for 11. Their chemistry is a bit overrated but it just works just because they’re husband and wife. It still makes my point valid as outside of his own wife, he only really has chemistry with Clara. So his ranking doesn’t change
10 is easily the worst NW doctor besides 13.
Colin Baker is my favorite. Season 22 was by far the best of the 80's and 6/Peri is my favorite TARDIS team.
Great list ................. although I do not understand why Matt Smith's incarnation is not higher......
Instant like when you said you don’t like the Timeless Child, great video anyway👍
Did anybody? I loathed it and I think the majority did too. I hope the show never sinks that low again.
Wow...well done! So good, in fact that I suscribed! Agree wholeheartedly with your rating.
11)David Tennant(He had a chance not to be the last. Season 29 is my all-time favorite season, but season 30(my 2nd least favorite season, 1st least favorite season 18,3rd is 28) happened).

9)Matt Smith
8)Jon Pertwee

For me, 12th Doctor is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, War, 9, 10, and 11 all together. Definitely not equal parts of them, but taking the qualities of them that are most compatible with each other and blending them so seamlessly. I can revisit his era, especially in series 10 and can tell he’s the same person as all that came before.
I feel like my take might be popular or agreed with😅
Ok for putting the war doctor so high full respect he is my third favourite
I would low 10's ranking and rise 6/7's ranking, but otherwise it is a great ranking that I agree with!

Capaldi was fantastic. I am a hard core 10 fan but totally respect your views.
My ranking and why:
14: Jodie Whittaker boring and dull and nothing new with character
13: William hartnell love hime and it’s not his fault but the episodes are very slow
12: War doctor I thing he did great but it kinda of annoys that he doesn’t play a doctor who has done terrible things, he’s still playing the doctor, but the performance is still great
11: Colin baker I feel bad as he really cared but it was JNT who ruined it
10: Matt smith always thought he was a bit too childish and not serious enough but when he is serious it’s brilliant
9: Peter Davison love this doctor but didn’t leave much of a impact
8: Paul mcgann don’t need to say a lot if he had more tv time probs top 3
7: Patrick troughton goofy but strict as well love most of his episodes and I reckon the most traits taken from the character is from the 2nd
6: Jon pertwee amazing doctor and brought some of the best villains felt like an action star it was very good
5: sylvester McCoy similar to Matt smith but done right silly but when serious it’s brilliant
4: David tennant yes Ik he’s not in the top 3 but it’s due to the other 3 just being a bit better for me, but this still an amazing doctor the romantic doctor with a darkness never knowing if you can trust him
3: Tom Baker: made the role iconic but also someone you don’t know if u can trust but being so silly u can’t help but love him
2: Peter capaldi just is the doctor the character development from knowing if he is good man to being happy with who he is, in a harsh way he is the most kind doctor, the zygon speech is the best of all time
1: Christopher Eccleston it may of only been on season but there’s so much in it the character development from a man who did horrific things and being a warrior to finally accepting who he is and becoming the doctor again, not only that he’s a doctor who shows fear and doesn’t always win the scene in the doctor dances where he saves everyone I can see what it means to him or the parting of the ways where he doesn’t do the act and accepts he’s doctor even though he has every reason to do it as everyone has died and except rose and thought jack was dead, he has nothing left to lose but still knows who he is and accepts it.
My opinion obviously love to here if u agree or disagree and love to know why 🙂
Interesting. I never watched the Capaldi series so I’ll have to give it a watch
Immediately
Yeah I agree peter is my favorite both because of nostalgia as he was my first and just because of his great series I also love David Tennants episode as I'm sure I don't have to explain which episodes of his were jncredible
Honestly 11th Doctor is way to low. His performance literally just takes control of the show.
Yeah but it’s this dudes opinion

This how I rank my doctors but to be fair and I quote "THEY ARE ALL GOOD!" and I have been a big fan since I first set eyes on the show back in 1979, which I think I would off been 5 turning 6 then and I still love it today. It will be interesting how the next doctor will be in the list. I have left a ? question mark in number 17 because, I did not want to spoil or reveal the surprise and Mystery to anyone watching around the 6th Doctor's era.
Your doing to much
Capaldi without doubt was the best doctor. The worse is the current one. She is too ditzy.
David & Peter are most certainly the best actors to have ever portrayed the Doctor. Great rankings, couldn’t agree more with you’re choices 👏🏽👏🏽
Paul mcgann to and Patrick troughton who grand son was in Harry Potter
He did it better in that single episode than Capaldi did in his entire debut season.

realistically 7 and 8 are by miles the "darkest" incarnations in large part because they are by miles the most complicated yet well fleshed out characters out of them.
My own ranking would go like this:
C.Baker
Whittaker
Martin
Hurt
Davison
Pertwee
McGann
Smith
Tennant
Eccleston
Capaldi
McCoy
Hartnell
T.Baker

Orphan 55 was the only episode I’ve enjoyed in the 13 doctors run it reminded me of old school dr who
My favorite was the 4th doc, Tom Baker. I remember every day after school and after dinner, I would turn on PBS and get comfortable and watch Doctor Who.

I agree 12th is the best
Another member of the 'Capaldi was the best Doctor' club here. I was born in the late 70s so Davison was 'my' Doctor but Capaldi would become my all time favourite.
It's good to see I'm not the only one who didn't like Matt Smith's doctor.

Disagree with the rankings but nonetheless respect it. Your video was great. My rankings would be - 14th Jon Pertwee; 13th - Sylvester McCoy; 12th - Colin Baker; 11th - Matt Smith; 10th - John Hurt; 9th - William Hartnell; 8th - Jodie Whittaker; 7th- Paul McGann; 6th - Peter Calpaldi; 5th - Tom Baker; 4th Christopher Eccleston; 3rd - David Tennant; 2nd - Patrick Troughton; 1st - Peter Davison.
You have to be actually brain-damaged not to put Whittaker in last place
Your list is absolute trash!
@@MichaelM28 Can you stop hating Whittaker in almost every Doctor Who video? It is really annoying.
Fascinating. Your worst Doctor is by far my best. And your best is without doubt my worst!
I’ve been going back and watching classic Who and the 3rd doctor was damn good. Especially in Inferno. That was one of the best.
