In my opinion Bergtatt by Ulver, is one of the most comforting albums and also anything ambient of folk by Burzum, especially “Hlidskajalf”.

Oh man... This album hits hard! Every time I'm listening to it I feel like a monk in a winter forest, fighting my inner demons. Ulver is amazing, both as metal and avant-garde!

oh, hlidskjalf is fucking masterpiece... it evokes in me some kind of nostalgia and melancholy, but at the same time a certain life affirmation... I can’t explain, it feels on a completely different level than what I described

I’m gonna drop another recommendation for people into ambient, or slow acoustic nordic stuff.
Vali - Skoglandskap. Similar vibe to Ulver’s acoustic work.

Those Enya, God Is an Astronaut, Agalloch, Lantlos, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada albums are all great and comforting albums. Here are some albums that I consider comforting albums:
    Joni Mitchell - Blue
    Tracy Chapman - Self-titled
    Enya - Watermark
    Devin Townsend - Infinity
    Bjork - Vespertine
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
    Cynic - Traced in Air
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place
Alcest - Les Voyages de l’Ame
    Lantlos - Neon
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Katatonia - The Great Cold Distance
    Portishead - Dummy
    Carole King - Tapestry

Wow that's a solid comprehensive list you have there, you've pretty much covered everything I'd have written, incidentally, Enya's Watermark was a massive influence on Devin Townsend.
Speaking of Devin, I'd have swapped out Infinity for Ghost, swapped out Heaven or Las Vegas for Treasure I'd have thrown in some Gordian Knot, Goldie's Saturnz Return especially the track Mother.
A few others artists that come to mind, Steve Reich, Arvo Part, (Especially his choral works) Tangerine Dream, David Sylvian, Lamb, Kayo Dot (last 3 releases).
I'm going to check out a few on your list that I'm not familier with, cheers then.

@@gavinbuck8130 It was a hard choice between Infinity and Ghost for Devin Townsend as well as Treasure and Heaven or Las Vegas for Cocteau Twins. Either albums from both Devin Townsend and Cocteau Twins would work. I am familiar with and love Tangerine Dream and Phaedra is a perfect comforting album.

King Crimson - Islands (1971) is one of the most comforting listens of my life. Bonus is that unfortunately the album is massively underrated by critics, they rate it as mid or KC's worst album, which is ridiculous. The title track and The Letter and two atmospheric masterpieces.

You were spot on with the Agalloch influences. They clearly tried to do something completely different with that album and they knocked it out of the park. Creating an album that is not only timeless but that is probably even more influential and pioneering than they realise themself I think. Combining so many influences into a neat and perfect packet.

    • @Rosterized
      @Rosterized 3 місяці тому +1

Agalloch is one of those rare metal esque bands I've been able to get my friends to succesfully like. Partly because there is that soft element to it, even their "black metal" vocals are not your screamed vocals but rather these whispered ones.

I think Pink Moon and Loveless are definitely some of the most comforting albums I've listened to.
Some other comforting albums I can think of off the top of my head are Boris' Mabuta No Ura, Earth's Hibernaculum, Chelsea Wolfe's Unknown Rooms, and Coteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas.
By far though, Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill and The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid + And Their Refinement of the Decline have to be the most comforting albums I've ever heard, genuinely some of the most beautiful ambient I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Only 4 years have I known of this album, and ever since I have cherished it greatly. The comfort that Loveless by my bloody valentine brings me is so great that even though I have only known of it for 4 years, it feels like 18 years of trauma in my childhood melts away instantly. In addition, coming from a person who has Autism, dealing with loud things unexpectedly can be hard, especially when young. But when you can experience something so comforting that you want to tune everything else out through the sheer volume of shoegaze music... that simply is bliss to me.

98.12.28 by Fishmans is the most comforting album I know. The story attached to it may not be the most uplifting but the sound of the album oozes with happiness and wonder alongside ethereal and emotional moments. This was also an album I returned to many times during a hard point in my life and found a lot of solace in listening/watching it.

Nick Drake’s music can invoke a sense of comfort that not a lot of records can do for me. Pink Moon as a whole is sadly short, but doesn’t waste any second as it’s 28 minutes of folk wonder that I could have playing as I find peace, no matter the situation I’m in. For a few others I could think of at the top of my head, it would be…
    Duster’s “Stratosphere”
This record makes me feel as I am in space, floating alongside the spaceship that keeps me tethered from floating away into the cold atmosphere
    Lamp’s “For Lovers”
Just look at the album cover and tell me you aren’t getting a sense of relaxation just by looking at it.
    Chuck Person’s “Eccojams Vol. 1”
One of the first Vaporwave records I ever heard, and it brings me back to the good ‘ol days of the 80s. Ahh, what a time to be alive (I never lived through the 80s).
    Fishmans’ “Long Season”
Bliss… A 35 minute song that could send me flying away to a field of luxurious grass that flows along, and has the comfort of a pillow.
    Acoustic live shows.
First thing that comes to mind for me are the Archival footage from 2000 of Phil Elverum playing at some house. Also of other artist I enjoy doing some live shows with acoustic instrumentation. I like these a lot as they inspire me (I also play live acoustically from time-to-time).
That’s all I can think of when it comes to soothing releases. Amazing vid :]

Cocteau Twins has a lot of soothing tracks with Victorialand, Treasure, and Heaven or Las Vegas; Pet Sounds is heavenly with its harmonies obviously but also with its production and relatable lyrics. Another personal soothing album I enjoy is Vanilla Fudges self titled album full of soul and pop covers done in a psychedelic rock style. Their cover of People Get Ready gives me hope and its final climax is one of the best sonic experiences to have with a pretty unassuming album. Highly recommend it on vinyl.

I would have to go for warning by Green Day. When I was a little kid, and things weren’t great, my dad would play Macy’s Day Parade for me on his guitar. To this day, that whole album makes me feel better. I’d also have to go for literally everything but a Tribe Called Quest, as their music has always been super chill and played back. Whenever I have a super stressful day at work, I’ll listen to “People’s instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm” while I clean.

One of the most overlooked Swedish metal projects is Dan Swanö's Nightingale. It's him going into like 70's prog rock/metal. I love it, but 2003's Alive Again hits different. The compositions are much brighter sounding than the albums that came before and after, and his vocal approach is so... soothing. It's smoother than what most people would think and it's a very comforting delivery. The lyrics are about nostalgia and existentialism and... I just find it very soothing.

    Myrkur - Folkesange
Love that album, and the Folk direction of it.
I think Folk in general is the most comforting music, it makes us feel connected to each other, our heritage - and even connected to the ground we stand upon.
It sounds "earthy", like it's built from the dust and soil that our ancestors are a part of - the same soil that we will one day become ourselves. This is why it feels so comforting, warm and timeless.

This is a good one, glad to see another entry to the series.
Kaatayra - Inpariquipê is one of the most comforting albums I’ve ever heard. It’s a solo project that, on this album, plays a style of folk music that is heavily influenced by atmospheric black metal. There’s tremolo riffs, harsh vocals, and aggressive drums like you’d expect… but all the instruments are acoustic. The primary focus is on beautiful laid-back passages that soothe you, melodic clean singing, flutes, maracas, and traditional Brazilian instruments. As soon as I press play, it feels like a massive weight just vanishes off my shoulders.
The 2020 album So Quem Viu is also entirely acoustic, which I love it for too, though it has more of that black metal aggression and isn’t quite as comforting as a result. Still very unique and well worth a listen.

    Another great video! Thank you.
I have to second Enya (in my case I would pick compilation “Paint the Sky with the Stars”) and Boards of Canada - “Music has…”
    Additionally:
Massive Attack - “Mezzanie” - although dark and moody it is highly comforting to me as it reminds me of my childhood’s discovery of music and brings great memories
Ascending Divers - “Watery Domain” - I can’t really explain why but it just relaxes me and calms me down - I often listen to it before going to sleep
    Kali Malone - “Living Torch”
Any renaissance a cappella polyphonic works from composers like Palestrina, Duarte Lobo or Carlo Gesualdo - the ethereal nature of pieces just transports me into other dimension.

I'd really like to add "Airut:Aamujen" (2006) by Tenhi which has been comforting my soul for over 12 years that I know this record. To describe it simply, it's a folk-inspired/progressive rock band which mostly has piano instead of guitars and it just sounds magnificeint with its mood suitable for cold winter days.

Great video and great list, Wyatt! Also, the new camera looks super crisp (maybe it's just higher FPS, but still, looks really good).
Here are some of my comfort albums:
    Myrkur - Folkesange
Emma Ruth Rundle - On Dark Horses
Mournful Congregation - The June Frost (This is kind of a weird one, but the guitar harmonies are so beautiful.)
    Björk - Debut
Trees of Eternity - Hour of the Nightingale
Ekin Fil - [Pretty much everything she's made. Gorgeous ambient music]
    Eivør - Slør

I often find that 70s era rock and pop extremely comforting. The biggest ones for me are two albums by Carly Simon: Anticipation and No Secrets. Her deeper voice is incredibly calming, and that’s amplified when combined with the folkier elements. A few albums similar to this would be Sweet Baby James by James Taylor, the self titled by Loggins and Messina, and You Don’t Mess Around With Jim by Jim Croce.

I’m gonna cheat, and include albums that make me fall asleep, which comforts me to that point. Those albums would include,
Funerals From The Astral Sphere by Midnight Odyssey: The amount of times I have fallen asleep to that album, and just… calmed myself to it, I can’t even count. To me, it’s the pinnacle of ambient black metal.
Shortwave Ruins by Mount Shrine: The amount of times I’ve heard their song Subtotem is bar none… and the album itself is exceptionally amazing when it comes to ambient. Such a shame we lost the mind behind the project.
The Self Titled by Here’s A Place I Don’t Remember: The only album the artist ever made, and it is exceptionally amazing what they have done. I can’t help but adore the album itself, and I highly recommend it if you love ambient.
Grace by Air Hunger: There’s a reason that on Spotify (yes, I use it, I don’t care), it was my most listened to album of that year. That album has brought me continuous comfort so that I can fall asleep. A beautiful album, and one of the best releases from last year.
Everything by Execration Chamber: A highly underrated artist, but their music is the epitome of calming, and even apocalyptic. Seriously, I highly recommend this artist if you love dark, ambient, orchestral music, listen to tracks like Gaunt In The Night, Buried In Time, and especially, Forged In Hatred. Seriously, listen to Execration Chamber, their music NEEDS to be heard.

Favorite recent songs have been "reunion 2" by aphex, " 1 1 is" by autechre, and the entirety of burials album, Untrue. Definitely check out the Chill Out by KLF. Its trying to simuale a train ride between two cities (or states I dont remember). As you drive along you come across sheeps, dogs, a mongolian throat singer, a radio that plays erruption, and many more, its a very engaging but relaxing ambient experience. (But you could possibly send a lot of Ambient records in here)

    Bjork - Vespertine

  • @gelatinouskomodo
    @gelatinouskomodo 3 місяці тому

Great list! Agree with a lot of them.
My personal picks would be probably Choirs Of The Eye by Kayo Dot (I know it gets intense but in a way the intensity of the album paired with the beautiful calm passages are so particularly cozy, emotional and all around heavenly. I always say this album is one of the best albums in music history. As frightening the album can get, the release of tension in it is just blissful and always makes me incredibly happy.)
Pygmallion by Slowdive (Most likely Slowdive at its more blurry, ethereal and floaty. An album to get slowly swallowed by the soundscape.)
Garbage EP by Autechre (in the vein of the IDM mentions in the video, this EP is just minimalism and ambient used in the most wonderful way on IDM. The journey through the album as every song becomes more and more naked and lacking in a grounded rhythm is so good. " VLetrmx21 " is one of the most beautiful, soul healing pieces of electronic music I've ever heard. Melancholic in nature but inviting. Like a " A Warm Place " from The Downwars Spiral but extended and, I guess, better. To be fair, Autechre is, at least to me, the best in the IDM game in regards of doing wonderful pieces of ambient music so there's lots of stuff to pick from their extense discography.)
76:14 by Global Communication (Another amazing IDM ambient related work. They do an great job at constructing such a cozy experience on this album. Such a " weigthless " soundscape this album has. This is definetely one of those that you hear on a early, cold winter morning, on your way to your daily job. Makes the ride less unpleasant.)
And the last one can probably be Hex by Bark Psychosis. (One of the best examples of classic Post-Rock imo. The early stages of Post Rock had so many interesting projects with such exciting approaches to this, at that point, still to be defined style. Bark Psychosis are one of the best. ' Absent Friend ' is one example of how magnificent and embracing this album can be with its sounds. And the rest of the album isn't worse than this song by any means. The opener ' The Loom ' is already an ear catcher.)
And that's all. Sorry for the lenghty comment, I just wanted to explain why this are comfy albums for me instead of just mentioning them.

I would definately say Olhava - Ladoga. Beautiful blackgaze from eastern Europe. The interludes called Ageless River I to V with their forest ambience mesmerize you into thinking you're like a spirit, wandering through the said forest near a river where a fire is burning. It's incredibly relaxing and emotional. Again it's an amazing album full of beautiful instrumentals and harsh but extraordinarily fitting vocals. It hypnotizes you the moment you start listening to the first song, catches you and doesn't release you until your listening session ends. And I know there are countless albums that probably sound similar to this one, but Ladoga just hits different.
I could also add When No Birds Sang by Full of Hell and Nothing (excluding the 1st song, obviously). Every song draws you in with that low-key esotirc sounding, of something unknown but comforting and calming and in other cases as movie music, which makes you really feel like you're the one true person on this planet. It's hard to describe for me, other people would probably interpret it in a totally different way, but when it comes to my opinion it is exactly like this.
