    G7 owner and shooter of many years, after tons of research over lots of time I can say:
    -Do not turn everything down to -5. You will not be able to recover the lost information. I started with -5 many years ago, then I went to -3 on all my settings with the standard profile (the best one and by far easiest to grade) and then I found what I enjoy the most for post is everything on 0 except for the noise reduction which I have on -5. After lots and lots of shooting with the G7 these are by far the best settings I have used.
    -Do not shoot in Cinelike D on the G7, it is horrible on skin tones i.e its very hardy to grade such a low codec in cinelike D without making the skin have a yellowish plasticy look. Shoot in standard or if you are short on time or less comfy grading in post shoot with the natural profile.
    This is a well done video but I would say it provides misleading information.

    If you want something that looks good out of the camera. Natural with no settings adjusted looks great! 👍🏻 Also Cinelike V.
    I think any profile will work, it’s not like on canon where you could risk destroying your footage. Even with the Natural profile there is still plenty of room to color grade.

    Very underrated video. I can tell how much time you put into the editing to make sure everything looks really nice. Well done. I'm thinking about getting a G7 for making films that sometimes involve a lot of people in public settings with a beginner behind the camera. This concerns me since I hear the G7 has horrible autofocus. What's your opinion on this? Am I better off getting an SL2? I worry I'll miss out on the sharpness of 4k (if it's even that good, hard to find demos comparing it on UA-cam)

    • @AidinRobbins
      @AidinRobbins  6 років тому +2

      It really depends- with the SL2 you'll have better autofocus and access to Canon lenses, but the G7 gives a better quality of footage. Depends on what's most important to you

    Hi Aidin,
    nice vid as always, BUT I have one question: Did you filmed in V-log when speaking about flat picture profile?
    Becouse there is no need to turn down saturation, contrast... unless you film in V-log.
    Not only on G7 but in every camera.
    Becouse in every other picture profile when you bring everything down to zero - you simply loose informations, you loose data.... so in post you have to bring it back artificially, that's why most of the people have that washed out look in their videos (and they think that's cool).
    I mean - only when filming in V-log all the informations are still there despite original look is flat -
    only in V-log you can bring everything back. I other picture profiles informations (contrast etc) are gone - so we can only "color" it in post on artificial way...
    If I am wrong please correct me - but that is what I know...
    greets!

    • @AidinRobbins
      @AidinRobbins  6 років тому +9

      The profile I use is called Cinelike D, it's the flattest one on the G7. Using a flat profile doesn't lose information. Your camera isn't reducing the contrast and saturation, it just isn't adding them, you're basically turning off the filter your camera adds to the clips

    • @VirtuosityToniLekic
      @VirtuosityToniLekic 6 років тому +1

      I see,
      but what I saw - when I turn down everything and try to bring it back in post - It looks so artificial and unnatural - so I research it and one videographer said that to me- only Vlog keeps all the informations (so you can bring them back in post)
      and that other picture profile simply loose informations.
      if you have some video or article where we are guaranteed that everything "stays" inside other picture profiles - would be great.
      I know that everybody on the youtube speaks how all the informations are still there- but in my experience when I turn everything to 0 - in post when I ad contrast, saturation... it looks really bad... (and I have gh5), same happend with my other camera canon 700d
      thanks!

    • @AidinRobbins
      @AidinRobbins  6 років тому +2

      If the footage looks unnatural in post that's a problem with your grading 😂 as I said, a flat profile is the original image from your camera- anything else like standard is a modification. Adding contrast = more highlights and shadows are crushed = less information. Some flat profiles can reduce the range of colors, maybe that's why you think the information is gone

    • @dahir1939
      @dahir1939 6 років тому +2

      try to reduce the opacity in post to make it look more natural. Hope that helps.

    • @vincenzodellama7158
      @vincenzodellama7158 6 років тому +5

      You are losing information turning everything down to -5. It's a 8 bit codec, it does not support flat recording as you can see in this video with the severe color banding issues. Also cinelike D is awlful on skin tones. The best profile for skin tones in the g7 is standard. Adjust the image so it look as close as you want it to be in camera, since you can't change 8 bit footage much in post. People should stop giving advice without doing proper research.

  • @mrdrewburrows
    @mrdrewburrows 6 років тому

    Hey, great video.... some great advice, especially regarding shooting in 24fps and 60fps (when is best to do so)
    One thing I've found out recently is the use of the 'C' mode on the top dial - where you can save up to 3 customised settings for fast switching, so basically adding your 60fps preferences as C1, setting you 24fps preferences in video (Movie) mode and flick the switch to alternate quickly between the two! I think also, I prefer to turn the live view sensor to 'OFF' and just use the actual hard button to make the change but to each his/her own! I'll be watching this again - thumbs up from me, cheers dude
    Off to check out some more of your vids.

    Dude, I keep coming back to your channel when I'm searching for stuff. Crazy helpful, seriously. I'm considering a G7 instead of an M50 MKII... just for cost, mostly, and to get away from the Canon ecosystem that I've been stuck in for a few years (T3i). I keep searching about autofocus... a lot of people say the G7 and nearly all Panasonics are terrible, but it seems pretty usable to me, for most things (vlogging). As long as you're not in 4k, it seems like autofocus works as it should (maybe not as fast as DPAF, but...). Thoughts on the G7, three years later (even though you don't use it, anymore)? Thanks, Aidin! Also, you mentioned in another comment that you don't use autofocus, ever. How do you focus yourself so well in all of these videos? From the companion app on your phone? Lastly-- what mic are you using for your audio, here? Thanks again, so much!

    Hey Aidin,
    Thanks for all your G7 vids. I'm finding them really helpful. I noticed on another video that your G7 gives frame rates as 30 and 60. Mine gives them as 25 and 50. Is that a European quirk? I take them to be 39 and 60, but I'm not totally sure.
    Cheers.

    • @ethanhenrickson6156
      @ethanhenrickson6156 4 роки тому

      Yes, in European Countries 25 and 50 frames per second is standard and that's what you should be using. In Western Countries it's 24 frames per second.

    Oh, my favourite notification! 😁
    Thanks for the tips! Two questions though:
    1- You said you'd rather adjust the shutter speed than the aperture, but isn't it better to keep the shutter speed double the frame rate (I've heard that rule very often)?
    2- Aren't you freezing wearing just a sweatshirt? 😅 I mean even muffled in a coat and scarf I'm still cold haha

    • @AidinRobbins
      @AidinRobbins  6 років тому +1

      Yeah it's most cinematic to keep the shutter speed at twice the frame rate, but I don't think it's worth lowering the aperture and reducing the depth of field for such a small detail- and I don't really care enough to bother with an ND filter right now 😂 I live in a pretty warm region so generally I can go out in just a sweatshirt during the day

    so if i was to switch to manual mode and set all my setting there can i still record video? Versus the manual mode with the camera icon on it. will the setting still save from regular manual mode M on the dial?

      Most of the settings like shutter speed and ISO will stay the same. Some settings are only available in a certain mode (like the flattest picture profile is available for video but not photos) and they could change

    i agree that most screens used to watch video today are not 4k (it will change in t he next years but let's just consider today) the problem i see is youtube that don't give a high enough bitrate for 1080p video the workaround i see is to upscale your high bitrate 1080p to 4k before uploading to youtube and then when you playback the 4k youtube video that has a higher bitrate than 1080p youtube video, your graphic card will downscale 4k to match your 1080p screen giving you better image quality in 1080p
