- The Porsche 928 is an underrated Porsche classic that has started appreciating quite a lot. It has a sex appeal like no others and those popup headlights would have to be the sexiest popups on a car ever created!
Still have my '88... had it for the last 12 years. 5MT, factory LSD, Venetian blue, RMB & 18" Cup 3 wheels. Rare bird! ♥
Amazing car. GTs are sweet with the manual. Black with Cup wheels is exactly how I'd have my 928. Lovely thing. Cheers!
I owned a white one with custom red interior and I miss it badly...I had quite a few beautiful cars, but this one....captivated everyone's heart in my family.
Wow, that's the color combo I want to buy. Sellers remorse is hard.
I have a '91 GT, midnight blue with black leather. 56K miles. Makes me smile like loony.
is it a manual
@@OpioidDeal3r The GT's were all manual, 5 speed.
@@ARTD67 oh thank you telling me
Awesome GT!! Would rather see an original muffler though instead of an aftermarket one
Thats true Gonzalaz, and a superb GT,having owned mine for 15 yrs and it's a mint example and fully optioned when it left Germany
Sadly i let so called Porsche experts here in Vancouver touch it and that was my biggest mistake!
Consequently it is undergoing a transformation with a 6.0 LS engine(same as the Holden Commodore) but with "Added Adjustments"
Will be really nice when completed😀
I am in America and bought my first 928 while stationed in Pearl Harbor, way back in 1994 when I was 22, for my 23rd birthday. A rare 1982 928s 300hp grey market version was for sale by an Airman at Hickam. I wanted one so much after seeing Risky Business when I was a kid. I was far more interested in the car than the BEAUTIFUL Rebecca DeMornay. It was a fantastic car, a dream fulfilled. The ONLY thing done to to federalize it was change the headlamps, that's it. I sold it 4.5yrs later and then bought a very disappointing 1984 928s with an automatic. It felt very heavy, soggy in fact, and slow. However, as far as engineering is concerned, both were brilliant. Just brilliant.
928 GT the only 928 I felt had perfect balanced styling
I first got into one when i was 15 a friend of mine bought a midnight blue on black from rick damelian was car of the month in the love heart brand new 928s was an absolute amazing drive i had to have it!
Please excuse me for mistakes, since English is not my mother tongue. The 928 was developed because the layout of the 911 in the USA could not pass the emissions standards and the crash tests as well. So it was decided primarily to develop a new car for the US market (not to lose the US market for the brand). The 928 is indeed the first design developed by Porsche - true. They started with a white sheet of paper. Still, the car is not loved - not even by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, what he said in an interview recently. For example, he doesn't like the sleepy eyes. I like them on mine. A lot.
I really enjoyed your review. Thank you.
However, the car does not have the original side mirrors and the original rims (Cup mirrors from a GTS and CUP I rims from a GTS first serie). But it doesn't matter - a 928 GT is unique. Greetings from Germany. V8 greetings. Great job!
Well 911 was the Porsche start but 928 saved their asses lol thanks to mr lapine. And won best car of the year www.porscheroadandrace.com/anatole-lapine/
928 definitely IS loved. But there are a lot of Porsche purists who don't even like ANY of the new water cooled cars. For them they're all work of a Devil. The only real Porsche for them is air cooled 911. You can ignore those people.
Comfortable... everything fits
Very nice review 😊
I own a black on black 1984 928s rare 5 speed with BBS wheels. It has been supercharged by 928 Motorsports of Wisconsin by Carl Faussett . They sent me the kit with full instructions. It has a straight pipe exhaust system and lots of torque. The dogleg shift pattern takes a little getting used to but otherwise incredible GT muscle car way ahead of it's time.
Oh. the black leather interior shows almost no wear ! Incredible.
The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest Bang for the Buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute. The 911 Killer's time has come!
Le-sigh... almost thought I would have gotten into a 91 GT... but someone beat me.. BADLY.. they wanted it on the side as their primary buy was 2 early 930/911 turbos.. can't really compete with 250+ Grand.
Well! ...i'm fairly shocked not be hearing some classic 80's style soundtrack pushing the nostalgia bug for this classic.
Too bad about the aftermarket exhaust and missing sunroof panel. Beautiful car
Yes they are a true GT and as Classic as they are,I agree with the other writer they are complicated
I have a 1981 manual & pretty mint but in the 9 yrs I have owned it it’s so unreliable
Like a lot of 928 owners, the problem with mine is electrical 😩
They all have it even the 928 GT& with the car fetching top $$ these days, owners are selling them
It’s always some sort of maintenance issue
As the cars are aging getting parts becomes an issue
Has to be The worst car I’ve owned and give me a Holden Monaro ,XU1 any day
The thing I find is having owned mine ,and it’s barely driven for its like driving a car related to “Russian Roulette”
It’s been to 3 experts (we won’t go into that” and at the end of the day they just want to rip you off
They say with 928’s it’s a love hate relationship
The only way to make them reliable is a 6.2 LS Chevrolet engine conversion done correctly so everything works, then the car is reliable✅
Creo que el mayor problema es el gran desconocimiento que se tiene sobre este coche si cae en manos inespértas, de ahi se derivan el resto de problemas en el coche, los problemas electricos vienen por que son coches que no pueden estar mucho tiempo parados
lovely car and lovely review, but... the "first clean sheet design" by porsche?
sure what you say about the 356 and 911 (and 959 derived from the 911) is true, but what about the 914/ 914/6? the 924/944? those designs came before the 928 and sure they were done in colaboration with VW, but the designs came from Porsche. not to mention the racing cars like the 904, 906, 910, 907...
maybe i'm being pedantic.
Shame they butchered the door panels with those speaker enclosures
Ive got a s4 1990 black on black concourse 70ks she dont come out often but when she does i get huge looks ,shes kept in a carcoon and carcover too ,ive been offered the earth for it but youl never get this ever again , there is no substitute
Before you buy a Porsche 928, find a mechanic who can fix them first. They are complicated.
Never been 1st before
Do you really think you could drive this car if this car did has been on road these 30 years. Easy to say these has made for to drive.
It is certainly an experience to drive. couldn't have it as an every day drive, but love the nostalgia is has.
@Jonathan Pruess That's bollocks, Jonathan. Not hard to work on? The shop manual for the car is 9 volumes long. Each manual is like an A4 ream of paper. They are very very complicated machines and will rape your wallet and ruin your marriage when things go wrong. A keeper to be sure, but you're average hard working Joe looking for a classic to love needs to keep looking. Exclusive then, more exclusive now.
@Jonathan Pruess ...Well then, well done Superman. Not trying to pick a fight here - and good for you for being able to own and maintain one of these classics - but telling people that they can "do it themselves" in the same breath as telling me you've rebuilt the top end is to say it's beyond the capacity of many (read most). Your line about "most mechanics won't touch the 928" really says it all. Raped wallet. Failed marriage. Move on, people...this is a car for Superman.

YES!!
Yes, I agree. Your pronunciation of Porsche spoilt what could have been a great review.
