I'm enjoying these learning of function tutorials as opposed to a specific piece of work. Its just more practical. As a follower from your early days all I can say is: Thanks for the hard work.
This tutorial is the best I've seen on C4D from anyone. This is literally epic mate. I have a character with a collider body on his gloves punching a bag with soft body on it and I want him to get really close and put big digs in, but it was exploding my punchbag but when I put some pressure in it to 100 and the shape conservation to 1000 it isn't exploding, some great tips overall in this video that answered my every need!
Chris, I remember watching the intro to C4D videos and just getting addicted with your teaching, a new tutorial by you is like a Christmas present for me. thank you so much!
Informative, and as always straight to the point. Thanks! p.s. To get straight back to the default value you can just right mouse click on the little up/down arrow next to the value that you changed, that works for almost all values in c4d.
A good tip is to hit the escape key while your simulation is going out of control. When it gets to the point where clicking won't register on the pause button, pressing esc will always register and is the default "stop" button for the timeline.
After all these years that i'm watching video's that ppl trying to teach something for different software, i can tell you Chris is one of the few people that knows exactly what he's doing. The way he teaches, the way he's trying to figure out a solution for a problem is just brilliant. Indeed you are a great teacher Chris! TY! (but you are talking slightly slower than usual, dont do that! XD) P.S. : lately i was checking Chad's Hardware setup, can u plz send me his home address? i wanna break the window and not only steal his pc but also his blue hat (he didn't put it on that list but i'm 100% sure that blue hat do a lot of things! I'm just saying man!
Nice reference video!! I remembered that you talked about this on one on a Siggraph maybe NAB presentation, I think it's the Dumb and Dumber 2 logo animation. Glad to know that we can now easily find it here as a go to library! Thank you!
You guys are amazing. Everything i know about Cinema 4D is thanks to you, and this opened a whole new world of work, clients and fun portfolio. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Nice tutorial, thanks. I'm using R21, and Maxon seems to have changed the power of the stiffness parameter. Taking your jello cube, if I use your settings with a stiffness of 0, I get something that squashes much lower on impact. It still tries to resume its original shape, but ends up slightly tilted yet mostly upright. It still looks like jello, but much less ... firm. To match your jello simulation, I need to use a stiffness of 10 or so. ... and in general, I see more local crumpling in the lowest row of polys than I see in your animations, (my cube has 10 segments) whereas your deformation seems more global, less local, if that makes sense. Have you noticed these discrepancies between versions as well? Or is there another setting that I've missed? Thanks again ...
Hey Chris, Super helpful video! Ive been trying to make a shredded cheese softbody for a taco but the mesh always explodes several frames after it hits any collider body. My steps are set to 20 and my iterations to 40. Is that amount of steps/iterations overkill? I'm also working at a relatively small scale, my cheese dimensions are (.2, .02, .02). Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks Chris, your teachings are aways on point and I truly respect your approach. I was fiddling with soft bodies the other day and I had a lot of trouble placing an element in the center of a "cube of jello" whilst keeping the simulation synced. The trouble was that i had to be really careful that the objects didn't pass through each other because the effects would immediately go wild and not be what i desired. I have a render that came out pretty good in the end , but i sort of hacked it and was wondering if there was a better way to do this. So for example , to place a logo inside of a cube of jello and have the cube drop or similar to this tutorial with the logo inside. The simulation would need to be synced and working together. Maybe there's a way to use constraints ? I'd put the link here for the final render but i don't want it to feel like spam lol so I'll only do that on your request if you have any desire to see it .. Thanks brother
I'm trying to flatten a model between two walls (kinda like a cartoony "splat") using soft body, but it keeps "exploding" into polygons all over the map. How do I fix this?
Hi there GGRYDESIGN. In a manner of speaking. We have all the past seasons for sale in our Kajabi system. Scene files included! greyscalegorilla.mykajabi.com/
Why does the center of gravity not work in soft bodies as in rigid bodies? As soon as I change the tag to soft body, center of gravity resets to center of the object. I am making a balloon that inflates and then lifts up, so I need the center of gravity to be quite low.
Greyscalegorilla well it's good to see the humanity behind the production. keep it up been watching you guys for 3 years now. great resource! see you in an hour.
Any Idea why a soft body would partially pass through a collider body and then start to vibrate the mesh? I have tried increasing the substeps and error threshold etc. to no avail.... It didn't used to do this and its driving me INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!
all I know to do when I do mess something up and go to play it, is to press ESC. it stops it from being frozen so I can go back and unmesss up, move forward, and maybe finish a project for once. instead of crashing an unsaved document, sending me down a path where I eventually say fuck it I might as well eat mcdonlds for lunch today too.
Damping vs dampening annoyed me too, but google says its right. Damping = reduce an oscillation, dampening = making wet. The Germans out-did us at English ;-)
Matthew ONeill its energy loss ( energy turning into heat or sound this is the reason why a ball and a free fall will never get back to the hieght he was before
Map of the masses, and the clones in the lesson did not explain, it's too bad to have to reread the reference. I use the translation of UA-cam, and there the translator is crazy.
No blinking in intro. Totally a replicant
Replicants blink, TERMINATORS don't : )
get use to it there is no other option

These reference videos help us too. A year from now when I've forgotten what Flexion does I can come back and watch again.
Chris Schmidt, knows everything.
💮💮💮
Awesome information, softbodies have been a big nightmare for me lately and this video has been a great help in leading me in the right direction.
Thank you very much! After watching this, in 1 minute I created a pretty good woolen blanket thrown on a sofa.

Thanks! I have to refresh that intro series one of these days : )

That's true. Always forget about that one.
One of the best Tutorials I have ever seen!
Perfect approach to teaching intro skills for soft-body.
Very Very impressive. Simple and Clear learning.
thanks man, sure enjoying, no matter whats the tutorial subject is, I never get bored watching...

This should be more popular.

Thanks so much for the kind words Amir, it means a lot! ~Chris

Yup, wanted it a little more focused for this one. Lots of fun soft body animation in the full Siggraph version.
Mere gold: Chris, you are the Dude.
Thanks Chris, brilliant and funny in the same time.
thanks learned a lot from this..
Thanks for watching.

You're welcome Carlos!
Thank you, that was vy far the best tutorial on softbodies I've seen, really teaching you how it works in all it aspects !
Thanks so much!
Nice walk-through the setting Chris, cheers!
Fantastic analisis watching each value. Really great.
Thanks for share it!
Very awesome tutorial !

Awesome tut Chris
Such a well put together and informative tutorial!
SUUUCH a great tutorial. Thank you so much! Seriously a savior
That was really great! Thanks Chris!
Thank you! so much ,but what about MAP(on the right side)? and how to use it?
god bless u chris

Very good one, cheers!
Excellent as always.
Cheers !
Lots of clapping I know but keep this quality in a future :). Thank you Master :).
16:20 It's worth noting that pressure can take a negative value and it works the way you'd expect.
Thanks GSG & Chris!!!

Love these detailed covering tutorials
Thanks, xoxo!
great tutorial guys!
Great tutorial!
Amazing! Thanks a lot.

Great Job!!!
Thanks for all you done! :0*
Good Lesson!
supercool lessons!
Do you upload the askgsg's somewhere? I missed last weeks episode and would love to catch up
Hi there GGRYDESIGN. In a manner of speaking. We have all the past seasons for sale in our Kajabi system. Scene files included! greyscalegorilla.mykajabi.com/
Thank you bro it helped me lot.
can you tel me ur system configuration ?
We've got all that info on the website here! greyscalegorilla.com/resources/

Hahahahahaha about the end. Thank you Chris. Really usefull tutorial. :)
I'm trying to add hair to soft body dynamics, but it's not render when the soft bodies move.
loved the bloopers .. xD
I didn't while recording them, but it's my favorite ones yet. That's only half the claps too...
I took notes
Please teach how to make it
OK I see but into the rendering I don't have the softbody render as the preview... Why???
oh... ok...Thankful!
thnx for the tut again. great ending *rolfmao*
Wasn't as funny while recording, but after the fact I like it.
Greyscalegorilla well it's good to see the humanity behind the production. keep it up been watching you guys for 3 years now. great resource! see you in an hour.
Do you even blink bro? Nice tut!
Awesome!

And what about if you have fillet?
Thank you you helped me a lot i didnt knew what the hell im doing
Now i know (by the way used it to get 3+ on physics class) thank you!
Andy Bernard, is YOU?
Hi Chris, maybe you should buy new camera for best recording :D

on my box "soft body" not working
why?

Dang it!
Matthew ONeill its energy loss ( energy turning into heat or sound this is the reason why a ball and a free fall will never get back to the hieght he was before
those are boxes of legos behind Chris? :o
Maaaaybe
:o
Very nice End Christ, Clap, clap, clap......
BEST!
greyscaleGODzilla
how we do this thing in text object?
Try making a cage around it. Check this tutorial. greyscalegorilla.com/tutorials/how-to-make-a-low-poly-mesh-for-softbody-dynamic-effects/

Dude, BLINK you're freaking me out
Guys there's no audio :/
Try again. It's working for us.
Ah its working now, must've been my setup at work -_- , thanks for the awesome tutorials !! really helps alot !
blinking at 1.40
Blinkn't
Why don't you blink?
Because I've recored 20 takes and hype myself up!
Hi Chris, maybe you should buy new camera for best recording :D
I've already got a camera in my Amazon Cart!
