Great documentary. As a young 20 year old Dutchy I arrived in Dublin 2 days after the 1-0 win against England at Euro 88. Spending the next week at a B&B in Talbot Street and a great pub near the Abbott Theatre to watch the matches on the TV, it was like a magic time for me. Every morning waking up to the music played loudly by the record store opposite of the B&B, Christy Moore, the Dubliners, an occasional Pogues tune. Loaded up with plenty of Guinness handed to me during and after the 3-1 Dutch victory against England, later that night jointly celebrating the Whelan goal against the Russians. A few days later I was of course the only one in the pub celebrating the Dutch goal, but I was already respected by most of the crowd inside. The Homecoming celebration in the open bus through O'Connell Street was an overwhelming experience and made me realize I had to return to Amsterdam to see the semis, the final with the Van Basten goal and another Homecoming through the Amsterdam Canals. Two years later at Italy 90 I was in Palermo and again there was Ireland. Guess every Irishman who was there can testfy that the joy and respect between the boys in Green and the boys in Orange was amazing, much to the surprise of thousands of Sicilian policeman who had their easiest day ever. The party on the camping site and the beach lasted till the morning. Both Irish and Dutch left Sicily by train the next day by the hundreds. Off to Genua and Milan. Jack Charlton's last match was also against the Dutch. Coïncidence? Dont think so. The warm memories I have with the Irish will last forever. I visited the country another few times but it all started with the Boys in Green under Jack Charlton. Believe me when I say that he was highly respected by all Dutch football fans. RIP Big Man, you were and will always be a true legend. Love and respect from Amsterdam 💚🧡
Fantastic adventure you and us had then.. Your story brings back super memories as i was a 20 year old that very year also.. Thanks pal.. P, S. Love the Dutch peoole....
He paved the way for the Good Friday Agreement as Eire manager by his Englishness & love of it's people & it's land whilst Great Britain all routed for their matches & fans & after that it's harder to kill us & easier to be friends & neighbors. Yesterday (10/07/2020) Jack Charlton passed away, as a staunch Leeds United fan I had the good fortune to see him play at Elland Road all those years ago, watching this reminded me so much of the style of management Don Revie had, not saying he was a copy of Don, he had his own style but the influences of Don Revie were there in that Irish squad, especially the never say die attitude. As an English fan I'm so pleased I watched this, some great players through the years and some very under estimated players that never got the recognition they deserved.
Why didn't Leeds employ him as manager, he was the right guy, they tried Billy, Alan & Eddie Gray (?) & it didn't work, we know with Jack it would. The Directors must have been scared of him & England. Still thank god for the Irish!
Jackie Charlton, as he was known, is a legend and a patron saint of Ireland. May he draw a Salmon on every cast as we thank him for what he has gifted us. Thanks big Jack for those GREAT years!!
Great documentary. Being born and raised in England but with an Irish mother, there were two things in my mid to late teens that awakened my Irish heritage. One was The Pogues and the other was Jack Charlton's Ireland team. I'll be honest and say that I supported England throughout my childhood but with Jack's team having a very Anglo-Irish identity, it made it very easy to feel like they were the team that best represented me. I was very thankful to have an excuse to support a team to be proud of instead of the arrogant England team and their appalling fans.
Great man, great team, great people, great country. As an Englishman I always enjoyed the Irish success under big jack. The joy of the fans and way the team always played their way and the opposition forced to deal with it was great. Can see who the Irish ☘️ took to big jack!

RIP Jack Charlton. Did brilliant things with the Republic. Had a good club management career and was an excellent player. Would of been an excellent England manager but England's loss was the Republic of Ireland's gain and good on them, did great things. RIP. Everton fan.
Sacked in 1996 by the FAI after ten great years. 88 Euros and World Cups in 1990 and 1994. A run that wont be repeated. The people will always love him.
I am Australian and for some reason we seem to have a natural affinity with Irish people. Every second barman in Melbourne seems to be Irish! Such stout characters, we have quite a few Irish playing Australian rules football and they are fearless. Ireland has always produced some great footballers and this generation under Charlton were an excellent lot but it took a man with a plan to pull them together, he just knew about football, and I think his confident bearing was contagious. They believed and they were as they believed. A little more luck and...and I have been around Europe during international matches and the BEST fans ever. No dramas, no riots, just good humour.

big jack , what a legend. I remember watching the irish at italia 90 and usa 94, became my second team after scotland. they were brilliant, can you imagine if they'd reached the semi finals with a chance of playing the germans. it was an amazing time, life in general was better, everything was better. football is just garbage now. digital has ruined everything. music is shite, tv is shite, films are shite, computer games are shite. everything is shite. if i had a time machine, i be back in the 1980s and 1990s all the time, whenever it got to 2000, i'd just get back in the de lorean and go back to dec 31st 1979 and start all over again.
Cheer up Russell. I kinda agree but you've been able to access, watch and enjoy an old documentary not broadcast in the UK, because of the digital revolution and internet access :-)
I disagree with everything you said Russell ............. no I don't , just kidding . You're 100 per cent correct mate. WHAT THE $%^& HAS HAPPENED TO MUSIC ????? Listen to the song by Porcupine Tree (with lyrics) called : The Sound of Muzak . This just about sums it up. All the best to you and yours.

"music is shite, tv is shite, films are shite, computer games are shite. everything is shite" .....funny, but unfortunately 100% true - everything now is completely shite and getting worse by the minute...if you get the de lorean working giz a shout and I'll go with...
I have no idea who or for that matter how old you are but by god no truer words have ever been spoken, life on this little island of ours is just pure shite, in fact I will even state that our country is being run by heartless criminals for the benefit of criminals and not their victims, best of luck to you and yours.
Lovely gentle documentary... wonderful memories...and everyone in Ireland (be they Irish or not ) remembers where they were when Packie Bonnar ( of Celtic & Ireland ) saved Timofte:s penalty way back in that glorious summer of Italia 90::::
Aye as a 15yr oldCeltic fan in England was always great to see the Celtic tops was great times great documentary jack fished on Tyne by mine top bloke 👍🏻
Watch this brings tears to my eyes always had a lot of time 4 big jack.this is a very fitting vid now jack has left us. Won so much in his time as a player most players nowdays would love to have haft the medals jack won over his football career .RIP BIG JACK
@@lenhught3208 Proper legend, never mind playing for Big Jack, your dad is one of the greats, both as a player and a manager. He played alongside one of the lads I knew back in the day, Danny Thomas. I was an apprentice at Coventry City in 1980, Danny had just turned pro. We were both from a small Town called Worksop. Danny moved to Spurs in 1983/1984.
Really enjoyed watching that. Didn't you guys have such a great era under Jack C. I remember so well that match against Italy. McGrath was superb and you didn't deserve to lose. I reckon you'd have beaten the Argentina in the semi final.
Mcgrath v italy in 94 when we beat them and he cleaned Baggio was probably his best game, not bad for a man who had serious issues with alcoholism. I love the moment in the finding jack charlton movie when jack now suffering with dementia sees paul on video and instantly remembers him. He was like a father figure to Paul.
Seriously speaking that was incredible viewing. Such great insight from the greatest people on earth, the Irish. And of course big Jack, the most Irish of English men! Thanks for putting this on here. Sláinte!
Our greatest sporting moments and achievements under this messiah big jack. What memories he brought 88 an summer of 90 then USA 94 with that Italian win, unreal especially when we were ranked at one stage at 7 in fifa rankings and unbeaten at home for 5 years!!!
the only team to have defeated italy at the 1994 wc. had they had more luck against the dutch, they could have gone all the way. the team's enthusiasm was still there from the previous world cup, they seemed to have found their stride, that opening game was unbelievable
Some good players in his team. Houghton, Whelan and Aldridge were winning leagues with Liverpool. McGrath and O'Leary were good defenders and there were some good commited players elsewhere such as Townsend, Quinn, McCarthy and Cascarino. Got a great team spirit and a method of play that worked.
Jack Charlton a true and first rate gentleman. He accomplished great things for the Irish National Team. I appreciate how he enrcihed the team and brought out the best in them. They were an exciting team to watch. They brought out the best in their opponents. They never lost to England. I fondly remember both the 1990 and 1994 World Cup. The game against England was a great performance and the game against Italy in 1994 truly showed the genius of Jack Charlton. A very emotional win in front of a large Irish American crowd in the Meadowlands. I am glad that Jack and his brother Bobby of blessed memory were able to reconcile before Jack predeceased him. Their memories be eternal. Rest in Peace Jack and Bobby Charlton.
Had a girlfriend from Dublin at the time whom I adored so kept going over to Ireland and got a bit caught up in the Jack Charlton/Irish football thing. Good fun times in the pubs and bars with good natured ribbing all the time. Really miss it all.
Legend. I went to the Ireland vs Italy Friendly in Foxboro, MA prior to the 1994 World Cup as a guest of Louis Kilcoyne. I drank beers with Jack and the boys in the Bar at the Stadium after the game. Stood next to big Jack drinking beers. I will never forget it. PS: He treated me like a family member. A Big Man, a Kind Man.
Football has evolved. Just not in Ireland. But what i do remember from those days were the Irish fans. While English were drinking and fighting the Irish were drinking and loving. We loved the Irish fans.
We never thought we would get to a Euro never mind world cups thanks for a man called the jack Charlton god bless you a lot of great memories and of course beatin England in 1988 so thank you very much appreciated it Jack 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪💛💛
Thanks 🙏🏼 for the memories, Jack, whether it was with Leeds, England &/or all your managerial postings too, particularly, the one with the Republic!! R.I.P. Big Jack!! 🏴🤝🇮🇪👍
TRUE FACT: When Jack Charlton was manager of Middlesbrough , they played shite one day and after the game Jack said "right all meet here at 8 o clock on Monday morning" he actually took them all to the Steelworks to make them realise how hard working class people had to work to make a liiving ,then said " you lot dont realise how lucky you are to be footballers being paid for a living , these blokes are sweating their balls off to provide for their families" it must of worked because they won the league 2nd Division with record 65 points in 1974
JACK CHARLTON, THE NEW CASTLE GEORDIE WHO WARMED MANY AN IRISH HEART AND A VERY SPECIAL MAN INDEED WHO WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED WITH KINDNESS AND WARMTH FOR MANY A LONG YEAR TO COME.. AN ENGLISHMAN WHO MADE A NATIVE IRISH MAN PROUD TO BE IRISH, FIGURES HEY.

Eamon Dunphy was the only journalist who was positive about Charlton being appointed Ireland manager ahead of Bob Paisley. Charlton did a very good job, but he had excellent players at his disposal. The midfield (either with Lawrenson or McGrath added) was very strong for the first half of his era. Charlton's no-nonsense, common sense, good humoured personality helped a lot and he did more research into opponents than he's usually given credit for. The right man in the right place at the right time.
Without Jack & the Irish team years, the Peace Accord wouldn't have happened I feel. It took the focus away & it connected the Irish Republic to Britain as just people living & loving rather than killing & hate.
A tear for the times gone by never to be seen again.
Thanks Jack sleep well 🇮🇪🏴

They believed and they were as they believed. A little more luck and...and I have been around Europe during international matches and the BEST fans ever. No dramas, no riots, just good humour.
I reckon a solid defence will always make a decent international team. When u are a weak team, all u can do is strengthen your defence
Irish people don't like the Australian people
I am Irish and yes we have a habit of getting in everywhere! Love from Ireland to oz!

Amazing times and memories, Big Jack was a hero and may he Rest In Peace
big jack , what a legend.
Yes sir, well said..I Attempted to get an flight over to Italy&and just gave up and took the Ferry with my Bruv over to Ireland instead..And by Christ we gave it out best in Drinking Dublin Dry&then visited my Parents Family down in Kerry..Plenty of Alcohol induced Amnesia&missed some of the Games but had one Helluva time..And now I live in the States, continuing a Family Tradition..
Irish legend forever ⚽️☘⚽️☘👍
Watch this brings tears to my eyes always had a lot of time 4 big jack.this is a very fitting vid now jack has left us.
Won so much in his time as a player most players nowdays would love to have haft the medals jack won over his football career .RIP BIG JACK
My dad was lucky enough to play under Jack. What a great manager and man. Great documentary.
Who was your dad?
Chris Hughton
Is
@@lenhught3208 Proper legend, never mind playing for Big Jack, your dad is one of the greats, both as a player and a manager. He played alongside one of the lads I knew back in the day, Danny Thomas. I was an apprentice at Coventry City in 1980, Danny had just turned pro. We were both from a small Town called Worksop. Danny moved to Spurs in 1983/1984.
@Kevin Houghton Thank you for your kind words. Danny was a family friend and was a great player and person too.
Sláinte!
Best part off my childhood ever, RIP Jack xo
Amazing as it all makes sense now with O Leary and other players. Irish New Zealanders, overnight became huge soccer fans. Long live Jack.
I remember amazing Liam Brady. And remember Ireland team 88-94 with Jack Charlton. Respect to Eire an' Big Jack from Serbia!
Our greatest sporting moments and achievements under this messiah big jack. What memories he brought 88 an summer of 90 then USA 94 with that Italian win, unreal especially when we were ranked at one stage at 7 in fifa rankings and unbeaten at home for 5 years!!!
What fucking achievements?
the only team to have defeated italy at the 1994 wc. had they had more luck against the dutch, they could have gone all the way. the team's enthusiasm was still there from the previous world cup, they seemed to have found their stride, that opening game was unbelievable
Great memories,,, thanks big Jack.. Best times of my young life for me and all young lads at that time...
Am here tears in my eyes r.i.p Jackie Charlton
Jack should have done more TV when his playing/management career ended. He's a natural.
Loved the look back fantastic big jack was the best 😊😊
An English KING and an Irish KING. Never EVER to be Forgotten
Just beautiful people in this video, well done everyone involved.. RIP Jack
Glad to lend him to you for a while!
...but didnt want him as manager. he was booed at Wembley and even said i won the world cup for this country after...your loss
@@seanbonella Yep, our loss.

Brilliant I'm a Scot but a brilliant watch!!
I am truly upset at the passing of this great man....Big Jack RIP
Football has evolved. Just not in Ireland. But what i do remember from those days were the Irish fans. While English were drinking and fighting the Irish were drinking and loving. We loved the Irish fans.
We never thought we would get to a Euro never mind world cups thanks for a man called the jack Charlton god bless you a lot of great memories and of course beatin England in 1988 so thank you very much appreciated it Jack 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪💛💛

Funny how Colm went on to play Don Revie in The Dammed United and was an absolute ringer for him
and in layer cake
Good lad Ronan. I enjoyed that. Fair play lad. ☘️🍀🇮🇪👏🏻👏🏻
I cannot wait for the movie! RIP Jack
As a Leeds fan, along with Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer and Eddie Gray he was up there with the greatest ever to play for the club.
Leeds shitcunts
Pretty sure Cantona was better than all of them..
John Charles was Leeds greatest ever player
TRUE FACT: When Jack Charlton was manager of Middlesbrough , they played shite one day and after the game Jack said "right all meet here at 8 o clock on Monday morning" he actually took them all to the Steelworks to make them realise how hard working class people had to work to make a liiving ,then said " you lot dont realise how lucky you are to be footballers being paid for a living , these blokes are sweating their balls off to provide for their families" it must of worked because they won the league 2nd Division with record 65 points in 1974
That was when a win was 2 points, right?
@@davidgill2492 He took them up the arse the lanky Leeds puff tut.

Excellent - wasnt aware of this documentary - RIP
What a man. Thanks for the best days ever Jackie
Dunphy lashed Charlton out of it for his tactics. He was a count in other words.
My grandfather met jack charlton, he's 76 and still living
Rip big Jack thank you for the memories ireland loves you 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Great documentary. R.I.P Big Jack.
How not to love this Irish generation, they were amazing
It took an English manager and English players to make it happen.
It was a great roster. Ireland probably never will see the likes again
@@greatone7314 most of us have got Irish blood in our veins.
great times. a true winner. could do with a few charltons in irish football today.
Without Jack & the Irish team years, the Peace Accord wouldn't have happened I feel. It took the focus away & it connected the Irish Republic to Britain as just people living & loving rather than killing & hate.
My father was a proud Republican.... but he loved Jack Charlton.
