- Tony Adams was one of the football’s best defenders before alcoholic binges, violence and delirium got the better of him. In this documentary he talks about how he tackled his demons.
I recieved councilin from Tony Adams charity after I finally admitted to being abused during my time playing football as a young boy. I can't thank Mr Adams enough for the help I recieved from his charity. I'm still trying my best to over come what happened to me but the help I recieved has gone a long way to help my recovery. Thank you.
Keep strong mate
That's terrible what happened to you, my son plays football and I'd kill anyone who abused him. I hope you are able to survive and thrive in your life with your counselling help.
Lmfao!!!!
Hahahaha!!! U got bummed by a nonce!
Stay strong fella, hope things are getting better for you and wishing you all the best for the future.
I am 1 month sober today. It's so very hard. Finding comfort in my AA meetings 👏
1 month sober is a huge step ,it's a massive step ,yes it is difficult, very different but it does get better and better and aa is a great place to be when u get there ,people understand you there ,believe me when u kick alcohol life gets better and better ,you will love life like never before ,I know this from my own experience
Hey, really hope you are still going. If not, stop and try again. And again, etc. I mean it.
Well done.
Try and psych yourself up to resist 10 times when you will be tested.
Each time try to make it through.
Once you get to 10 you will have proven yourself.
Hope you held in there, if not start being sober again, dont stop trying.
How you doing now ?
This video about Tony gave me the courage to to admit I have a drink problem.
I am now a regular at AA.
Thank you Tony.
The Game changer
That's great. Really great.
Is it going ok now ?
Brilliant. Good on you. Keep at it.
Good luck on your recovery x
Keep going mate. Well done. All you have to do is avoid that first drink.
The Game changer loser
Alcoholism is a lot more deeper than just drinking booze. Alcohol is the solution to feeling chronically uncomfortable and irritable on a daily basis. The first step in recovery is accepting you have a problem, denial nearly killed me. I'm 8 years sober now thanks to AA. Big TA is a legend. Day at a time.
So true.
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. Adams comes across so well. I absolutely tip my hat to him. He is a deep, creative fella, a mind that can often be afflicted with addiction. I say well done to anybody who has beaten the booze because deciding to quit and admitting it has gotten out of hand is a very tough thing to do. Well done
Ive been sober for almost 15 years and I love it
I wish more public figures like Tony Adams would speake out
we need that
Hi fella you still soba I am 38 I only drink at night after work but recently a school friend died from alcohol abuse I know I feel better when I'm not drinking but I can't fill the gap between 5pm and 9pm I have to have alcohol WHY??
8 years sober for me 💪
@Oliver 2000 Sounds like you could be on your way to alchoholism and I would say that is too much drink for someone of your age. I will drink every day. I will drink up to 13 pints on an empty stomach and have black outs. I wouldn't say I was an alcoholic but I would say I have a drink problem. Now is a good time to get out of the habit. Drink is habit forming and I have been drinking heavily for a couple of decades. Get advice. Change your behaviour, change your friends. Not easy as our culture is set up that way, as you say
@Oliver 2000 "Tonic wine" - we all know you mean Buckfast. I am down here in Torquay now, lol
@@milo04 do you feel anxiety if you don't drink? because I know that feeling. You have to find another way to distract yourself and fill your time, it's as simple as that! Yes, not so simple maybe, but you have to find another way to keep anxiety (or maybe you call it boredom) at bay. Try cardiovascular exercise like jogging; getting your heart going and pumping a bucket of sweat out is irreplaceable and you will feel peacful afterwards. Your legs will be sore at first for a few weeks when you're not used to it but that passes and then you will have a new healthy addiction to replace your unhealthy one. And yes exercise is addictive but it's an addiction you have to earn
5 years sober. Today I accept I can't drink..but what a price I paid for that acceptance. Once you pass through that arch and accept to your inner most self you pass you find peace and acceptance.
Wish I could get it pal
We get a perverse pleasure from nailing ourselves to a cross. We get a perverse satisfaction from feeling we are victims. We tell ourselves we met the wrong people in life, we came from the wrong family, we married the wrong person, we tell ourselves if people would only treat us differently. I could write the list add infinitum. We are always the victim. We get a perverse satisfaction from feeling sorry for ourselves. We believe that we are correct most of the time in how we see things. We are inherently negative in how we view life, people and situations. We focus on the negative as a default. As this negativity grows inside of us we become increasingly more disillusioned with life and become more destructive to ourselves, our relationships. This soul sickness progresses within us. We push everybody away and the dis- ease (we are ill at ease with ourselves) within us increases day by day.
We can face these facts about ourselves and begin to understand that if we don't take action, we will ultimately destroy ourselves. The truth is we are sick people who have lost the ability to make rational healthy decisions for ourselves (in the beginning).
You have to stop drinking despite yourself. Misery loves company is a saying that makes more sense when you start getting sober. When you put down the drink, you will be swamped with negative thoughts telling you that 'you can't do this'....'your good enough'...'you don't deserve to get sober'...'your a bad person'. This is what we call the 'committee' or the 'monkey on the shoulder'. Your illness will tell you everything it can to stop you succeeding. You must ignore this and begin to supplant it with positive messages especially when you don't believe it. After time, day in day out you will being to start to believe there is a way out of the forest. As it was negative messages that got you into this sick state of mind its positive messaging that will get you out of it. You go to AA meetings and share the negative shit in your head and keep talking. You need to stand up and get a backbone for yourself. Stop being a victim and stand up. You have to stop drinking despite yourself. Misery loves company is a saying that makes more sense when you start getting sober. You will have enough suffering for the first year to keep your inner critic pacified, It starts with baby steps, and bit by bit by bit you become stronger. The negative voice becomes weaker and the positive voice becomes stronger. Go to an AA meeting. Don't mons the God stuff. There's plenty of atheists in AA. It's a support first and foremost. You take what YOU what and leave the rest. AA is a menu. You pick what you like about it and leave the rest of what's on the menu for others to pick from. Now stop being a fucking victim. Good luck
KrackowKid At the age of 56 my Dr. told me he was surprised I was still here, when I asked him what he meant, he said he meant he was surprised I was still Alive. It struck me like a lightning bolt. I didn't want to die. but I realized I was drinking myself to death. I prayed to God to save me ,he did and today my life is like Tony's !
KrackowKid great comment
5 years and 6 months soba ,thank you aa ,loving life again
I'm Irish and it seems the drinking culture in Britain is very similar to here. Binge drinking is seen as "having the craic", everyone makes jokes about alcohol to hide their fear that they may have a problem, and every social event always has alcohol. Plus, people start drinking really young.
Irish as well and fully agree with you
@@rose2kn I think this Covid lockdown has sent more than a few people down the wrong path with alcohol. Glad I ditched it last year.
Tony Adams is respected by 99% of UK footy fans. He is a leader todays game badly needs
He's a legend.
(Man united fan)
From where did ya get that 99% data? Is it available online?
@@GenSecWPNMbecause theres always one!
Tony Adams has helped a lot of people; maybe that will be his greatest achievement in life.
Drunk now and trying. Thanks for the story. It helps
Keep fighting it.
My Father was an Alcoholic and seriously the damage that it did to him and us as a family is immeasurable. He's passed away now far too soon with alcohol induced dementia (karsocofs). I'm miss him .
Bless you 🙏 ♥
Different era of football where drinking was part of the culture. I was a big Arsenal fan back in the eighties and nineties and have some great memories of that time. Adams was a rock in both his club and countries defence and even bigger praise to him for being so successful whilst battling his addiction.
I’m a terrible binge drinker, I fully realise this. I have stopped drinking for months at times, but I always end up drinking again.
Same. Same. I'm dry now and have been for 2 months, but I'm honestly considering AA to keep me away from it.
Don’t take that first drink.if you did months , you can do years .
Same here… it is difficult. I normally have no desire to drink. But sometimes I drink alcohol… but I just go all in
Great documentary, great man. I’ve struggled with alcohol, I must give it up. Videos like this help, and so does football! Much respect, Tony.
Celtic fan. 🏴🍀
3 mounths sober over here xx
Is it 6 months noe
Hope you stuck with it.
Reading you 7/1/20 & hoping it's a year and 3 months!! WELL DONE, YOU ARE WORTH IT!
Hope you're still sober. Day at a time.
Well done Joyci, keep going girl. 🙏👊
Thanks so much for sharing this. Much Appreciated!
fantastic watch this, tone was one of my all time heroes growing up, LEGEND
You female?
I like Tony Adams, he is a complex character i think he has got demons but seems a decent guy....
Deep thoughts is considered complex
Ok he is not complex but thinks deep, whatever, i still like him and good captain..
The best caption & defender I’ve ever seen for my club
Great stuff, these problems are not discussed as openly in the Bundesliga. Good job!
Me abusing alchol got me into prison, simple as that.Well said tony.Drink driving is a horrible selfish thing,so many innocent people have been killed and shattered families.Well done tony you have done well.
Thanks for your honesty, as a player you were immense, hopefully you have moved on from the criticism of the unfair donkey comments but remember you were a young man learning his trade and grown men who had no ability to play football expected everything from you, wrong so wrong, you are a hero to me but I shouldn't put that on you but you are such a influence as you were a fighter and thats what you need to survive this world thanks tony
So candid Respect to you Mr Adams. Alcohol like drugs are not bothered if you are rich or poor, All welcome.
Alcohol is a drug , it's the media and drinks industry that seems to seperate the two..
Who would have thought it...Grew up watching Adams and the boys best defence in the world in the 90's can't believe they would play drunk....could never have happened today.
Anthony Kelsick I’m a rangers fan and Paul Gascogne used to tan whiskeys in the dressing room before hitting the pitch. Even the management knew he was doing it. It was part of the culture/game I suppose back then
@@gaz8177 Yeah Gazza had a terrible drinking problem his whole career. Some people just can't escape the pull of it.
You would be surprised but the amount of money they earn you would think they would be on their best behaviour.
I wish alcohlism was better understood, its as bad a herion once its got them.
You are right. The only reason it's not acknowledged is 1) money and 2) alcohol takes a long time (typically) to kill someone.
So don't drink..? It might be "culture" but if you continue on this path doll it's not going to be pretty.... Stop now while you're young and your liver can handle it. Plenty of people have died at 18, 19, 20, 21, 22... etc from alcohol, don't be one of them :C
that’s a shitty comparison - heroin addiction gets you within 5 straight days of usage. 6th u wake up sick, and you use once again to end the flu, then you’re in, then it’s daily use until you either use every day until you die, or you have to quit, and that’s the point, derox is so severe you can’t stop.
alcoholism is bad once you’re physically dependent - but that’s the thing with alcohol, it takes severe and long long term abuse to get physically addicted. my own mother drank for years and years every night, and she could stop for lent and the only detox was boredom, depression, and insomnia, nothing on heroin.
i mean it srsly takes like a bottle of whiskey every day for about 3 years before you wake up in real detox, and then alcohol detox can kill you, tremors, hallucinations, sweats, insomnia.
but again my point is that alrhoughrr alcohol is physically addictive, what they have on their side is that it takes so much for so long, and every day.
in other words, it takes a real good and constant usage to get to say george best style addixtion, or amy winehouse.
these ppl were addicted to alcohol lkke a heroin addict is addicted to heroin.
George best would wake up and be jn the pub for 10am, and out by 12am, that’s real alcohol addiction, and by that point you’re waking up with your hands shaking,:- same with winehouse - she would wake up (CCTV), off license, and she would down pure vodka like she was drinking water, i remmeber seejnf that footage where she bought a bottle and downed it in front of the shop assistant there and then.
That’s a real alcoholic, Jim morrison was the same, 3-4 bottles of whiskey a day. These ppl have to drink to keep away the detox symptoms.
but lastly, the comparison to heroin is very different, these alcoholics drink spirits for years every day and it takes a long time to feel detox.
heroin takes 7 days of constant use and there you go, you wake up with the worst flu of ur life, and i’ve been addicted for last 5 years now -my parents think i’m sober because i’ve been to rehab and i’ve been given so
much methadone and subutex
subutex works very well. Just 2mg under tongue, and each detox symptom start to fade within 30 minsk.
The shits and cramps slowly stop.. the the sweating starts to stop, then the freakish symptom of not being able to comfy in any position, that ends as well... it was a miracle.
the cold chills seemed to hard to stop, they remained for weeks even on subutex...all this, and i had stopped taking it, and back on heroin - not only heroin has you physically, it’s mental addixtion, even being physically welll finally, you’d think you’d stop, but now i’m still on heroin with a stash of subutex for when one day i wanna stop..that’s how an addict thinks
i can continue using heroin now because if i ever run out or can’t afford it, as soon as the detox starts i have subutex, so i’ll never ever withdraw again.
In america subutex costs £100 a week, NHS in uk j have a mssskve stash that costs guess.... £0.
Good ol Nhs
its worse, you deie without it, heroin is just extremely painful to stop for a week but your in no danger of death
@@humanforfreedom9583 :You have not got a clue what you are talking about,I am not trying to be mean to you mate, but if it was that easy, people would not be dying with the addiction, plus another thing with heroin is you are CRUCIFIED socially, people look at you like you are not human or you are just a piece of shit on their shoe, and that makes it even harder to keep away from,I know all about the type that would be patting drug dealers on the back while looking down their nose at you, that is where the problem with heroin addiction lies and until we truly understand what a person goes through,we won't have the slightest clue how to tackle it.
one of the best documentaries i have watched
What's funny is that, he was addicted to alcohol and still was consistent on the pitch, like a WALL. We love you Mr. ARSENAL
Drinking 30 years im 40 now,i have abused alcohol and drugs day in day out i feel its time to stop
I'm so glad you feel this way. If you go to AA get a sponsor who sounds like he will understand your experience and who has had years in recovery; you can do it. You might slip but that's OK, part of the process. Let yourself really hear the stories at the meetings, let yourself really be honest with your sponsor and keep at it!!!! You'll meet people and share numbers, great to call them when you're tempted or hopeless. They've been there, too. Good luck, stay with it!
Keep fighting.
I can't believe both Graham and Adams thought he was harshly done by in court.. he got away lightly as far as I can see... having said that, Adams and Merson have been very brave.. also, between them, they have helped a hell of a lot of people... Keep going and Keep giving fellas
Bren Daly
I was glad he didn't kill anybody in that crash. Then There would be no way back. But he was very fortunate. And reformed into a good guy. And great footballer
I don't know Tony Adams, but I do. I identified as I'm sure many others do. 29 years to make the decision...yes indeed. Alcohol and associated thinking...a bewitching friend yet was really a destructive enemy that cannot be underestimated. Courage to change the things we can, just a day at a time. Well done - and thanks for sharing.
Tony Adams and Des Walker, my two favourite England players ever from way back!
Des Walker is probably England's best ever defender.
He faced his demons he challenged a habit he broke boundaries and obviously helped the needy dont personally know much about him but the comments on here are mainly positive by people whom have found his advice helpful to them
I've been sober 3 years an 8months.
My longest sober period, and I'm keeping it that, one day at a time.
It's not easy with it being such a social thing to do, but it's great waking up feeling Normal!!! and not like death warmed up for a week .
But guessing uve turned 2 herb..changing 1 vice for another..thats the good thing bout tokin,ur in full control...but give it a while and u get bored and say 1 drink wont hurt, then its 2..gotta b strong and give the lot up and b happy..then uve conquered all..i keep falling

Amazing how the likes of Adams, Merson and McGrath never killed themselves or some innocent person during their years of driving while pissed
Were they pissed?, they must be good drivers if they are drunk and don’t have an accident, big difference, some can take the booze and some can’t (the little man types), wonder how many soccer players or English person has driven whilst drunk, you’re just assuming, means nothing.
Well done Tony Adams. I'm proud of you. Coming from an Arsenal fan
Tony seems a great guy nice to see him helping other people he went to rock bottom with the drink and now he has turned his life around I applaud the guy he's got nothing to hide now. at the end of the day we are all human .I have seen my brother hit rock bottom with both drink and gambling but he like Tony has found peace and is no longer in the grip of the addiction. maybe we have to go through the storm to see the rainbow on the other side
The narrator is the guy that played Trevor Hicks in the Hillsborough film made by ITV, Christopher Eccleston his name is amazing actor
Had the honour of meeting him tonight. A brilliant and lovely man

Great to see how Tony overcame his issues.
Why do scotland have the best managers but some of the worst teams. Its painful being a scot

Maybe that's why God gave you the most loveable accent on earth.
It’s the man management
Ian Clark agreed 😄
Very nice to view this, Thanks Tony...
I love how softly spoken he is haha - he's kinda funny without meaning to be. Solid docu, alcohol can fuck people up baaaad.
Alcohol is a hell of a poison. Drunkness makes you anxious, depressed and shamefull.
And whats the cure?
More alcohol. Its f----g scary when you think about how the shit works.
Today its the midsummer day up here in Sweden. This is the weekend with most bing drinking and boozing in this country.
It feels great to wake up in the morning with no hangover and anxiety.
Its one day at a time guys. Thats how it all is.
Because alcohol is legal and so widely used, many people dismiss its seriousness. Alcoholism has run to three generations in my family. I was a great college instructor. Students loved me. The reason I was such a great teacher was because I was drunk most of the time. I just couldn't teach sober. As with most alcoholics, your luck eventually runs out, which mine did. I can no longer get a job on the college level because of my alcoholism.
Everyone has demons to an extent I'd imagine, I do. some have more severe issues than others, and it's very sad some have to turn to the bottle to deal with what's troubling them. Fortunately for me, It never even pops in my head to drink, just not my way, but everyone is different. Best of luck to Alcoholics out there and take care x
Seeing him lift the double sober was great.
Meant a lot seeing that.
And I’m an Evertonian.
Club allegiance means fuck all when all is said and done.
Seeing Tony get sober and lift those trophies was a really great moment.
Like seeing Tyson Fury come back from the brink.
And then seeing him lead young lads toward sobriety. His greatest achievement yet.
Him playing better and winning titles after coming sober makes me so happy. Gives that goal at Everton a completely different meaning. Him with the sun in his face loving life. Inspirational
Behind all the boozing Tony seem's a pretty decent guy. He will be fighting this for the rest of his life, once an alcoholic always an alcoholic
The thing is, alcohol is not the problem, it is the solution. Tony was probably on the wrong path long before he ever took up drinking. Alcohol dealt with his guilt and remorse, his feeling that he was empty inside, that he was missing out in life. His problem could have easily been gambling, sex ,drugs or anything that separates him from himself for a while. The solution is to seek to change as a person through a 12 step program. Tony has found a new way of life that makes sense to him, it works, he feels he has great purpose in life and is happy to be exactly where he is now. So there is no ongoing fight, he just has to keep doing the things daily that give back to society and to his creator. that is the great news that he displays here. Life really only started for him when he was reborn in the spiritual sense and it seems to be a much better life than he ever could have wished for! Sobriety is great fun you know :-)
Rubbish. Once you give up drinking, you're no longer an alcoholic.
There’s two types of alcoholics: those that drink and those that don’t

Not necessarily no, some have parents who where already well off before they where born, and give them a head start and advantage over the average man.
Great video. So honest. What player too!
I’ve abused Alcohol to do my Job,in my mind I think unless I drink I can’t do it. And be drunk. I hate the way I behave when I’m drunk but in fear being myself sober. I’m scared. I want to quit my job but don’t know what to do really. I’m tired of being hungover and depress. Praying for better days 🤞🏽
Hey, how are you doing? You can be yourself and stop those hungover days. You will be loved and accepted, try it.
I hung on for many years, hoping something would work. Finally, i became willing to listen to someone else who had found a solution. He advised me to put aside all the beliefs and biases i had about people and the world. You cant fill a cup that is full. I went to an AA meeting everyday. I took a real interest in my recovery; I took up my old faith; I got down on my knees and prayed as he advised; I went out into the world and tried to help others without reward; I was reborn. My life now is better than the best life i could have thought possible for a guy like me! That seems crazy but its true. Good luck with your journey :-)
A great leader and defender for Arsenal. Haven't seen a player with his certain qualities since.
@A. Fox my career as a radio presenter has nothing yo do with Tony Adams and his alcohol issues. I take it your not a Arsenal fan, otherwise u would like Adams. Thank-you for appreciating my singing and dj sets.
@A. Fox your funny! Made me laugh!! On a serious note I heard alot about Declan Rice recently all good things. Apparently he won't sign a new deal West Ham offered him. Is it a money situation thing then?? As for Wilshere I really liked him, the shame about him is he's never on the bloody pitch always injured. When he started out at 16 years old I think he was he was great, run Barca's midfield off the pitch in champions league. A real shame but because of his injuries he was never gonna get game time so he left. If and a big If he stays fit and gets a run of games he could be great for you.

it's an awful pity Gazza wouldn't take help from Tony
I got help for my ALCOHOLISM from a power beyond this World it works 15yrs sober
It takes balls to come out and speak about your demons like that. It's given me a lot of respect for him that maybe I didn't have before. I'm a hugely liberal person, and I am an advocate of legalising all drugs, but if I was to ban one of them, it would be alcohol.
Change comes from within. But it helps when you have help from others once you begin to make the changes.
In the last 2 years 5 people I know have died because of alcohol the last one only 4 weeks ago and it’s a horrible way to go what with the abdominal pain the jaundice and the build of of excess fluid (one of my friends was getting 10 to 20 litres of fluid drained from his abdomen every 3 or 4 weeks) there last months aren’t pretty at all.
Second best centre half in Premiership history, just after John Terry. Great player. So glad he overcame his demons.

When did native English players stop being the majority players on English Premier teams?
High Number bosman ruling changed everything
1996. Just after the 'Bosman' ruling and the influx of foreign coaches.
Continental managers looked at us players as piss heads so bought even more s*** players over from Europe
Never drunk alcohol apart from once in 1995 when I was a teenager , funny my father owned an off licence but being from an Indian background but especially my parents never really drink or smoked
I remember back in 1995 when I had a can of Budweiser and my friends and I played a video game where we had a mini tournament and I knew I was the best
However the Budweiser impaired my motor skills and I lost quite early on
I never forgot that and to this day I still remember it. Alcohol just needs to be banned along with cigarettes and drugs needs to be a serious custodial time like Thailand
No it doesn’t need to be banned you boring fool.
Go and live in Saudi or somewhere else if that’s the kind of society you’d be happy in.
In the West we don’t live by those strict rules, we have personal freedom to live our lives not dictated to us by religion or doctrines.
Some people have addiction issues but people can get addicted to anything. Food, gambling, sex, computer games etc.
It’s part of the human condition.
Tony was our greatest ever captain and defender. You have to wonder how much more he could’ve won if he didn’t have his drink problem.
If Alex wants to have maximum impact on the youth he's working to, he should be wearing his pro sweater. There is so much credibility and admiration attached to the jersey that it only makes sense to wear out when he's speaking to them !!
Adams was a fantastic footballer but imagine how much longer these guys could have played at the top.
I imagine drink shortens careers by a good 4 or 5 years..
It made me laugh when it said Adams was alone in a bed wet with tears.
More like Adams had pissed bed again ha.
I think it was a back injury that ended Adams career.

I am aware of people with alcohol problems and I wish them every success with their recovery BUT if they decide to get behind the wheel of a car whilst intoxitiatated then they deserve to go to prison. Far too many innocent lives have been lost at the hands of a drunk driver. Being an alcoholic does not offer as an excuse for irresponsible actions.
