With the s20 and s21 phones, the updates in the first few months greatly improved the cameras photo and video quality. It would be interesting for a follow-up video after both Samsung and Apple have done a few software optimisations as both are fairly new.
@@romella_karmey no the opposite, S21 ultra improved like 50 percent over the last 1 year, it became a different phone alltogether in 1 year. Samsung improves their flagship cameras a lot with updates
@@romella_karmey ohh that's a given, chinese manufacturers launch a new model in the same series like every 5 months, so they have to sell the new model somwhow, on the other hand samsung is much more reputed brand and releases a model once a year so no worries about people not upgrading
Arun needs to start doing a follow up camera tests after Samsung does their software updates for camera as well. More video ideas :) Edit: Disabling Shutter Sound and Vibration Feedback in settings makes the shutter lag feel a whole lot less.
Yes. These two negatives are fixable via software (I think) and samsung usually is pretty good at taking their phones to the next level during the time they are out via software updates. The S21 Ultra camera feels like a complete generation ahead after all these software updates, it's insane.
@@cipri198zero yeah exactly, software, thats the only thing samsung has to improve lol if they get it just close to how iphone is optimized they will mash every other camera
Software could drastically change the results to get the most efficiency out of the hardware, but even if Samsung wanted to, given that the phone is using an OS made by google, and different hardware (like the snapdragon chip), they can’t do much about it. This is where Apple takes the cake.
One consideration: Samsung has yet to push up camera software enhancements for the S22 Ultra. I know on my S21 Ultra, the camera seemed to improve continuously over the last year. I think a few releases from now, many of your points may be addressed. Since I love travel and hiking, the zoom on the Samsung has allowed me to largely leave my DSLR and even my Panasonic Lumix at home.
By October Samsung's new software should be pushed out... and by that time the iPhone 14 pro Max will be released and the Samsung will be lagging behind till Feb 2023 when the new Samsung S23 will be released and....and...and... its an endless circle.
I really love that you’re doing these videos because it helps me decide ( I’m 11 btw, turning 12 this year ), now I know what you’re thinking you probably think that I’m a brat but actually I have to work really hard in school to get these like if I do well then my parents buy for me. So yaaaaa… ❤️
The complexity and level of effort Arun puts into the camera comparisons is goated, this man deserves all the respect for constantly brining out interesting, non biased, detailed content 👏
His biase is nearing goat levels, too. Watch again and see how he just leans towards the iPhone even in cases where it's so clear the Samsung won. Even at the end he stated that the S22 didn't improve over the S21 as he expected, but I thought this was supposed to the a comparison between it and the iPhone 13, which by the way asides the brighter night mode, didn't offer any significant difference from the iphone 12. The biase for Apple is too real. Mind you, I'm just a neutral and I own both Apple and Samsung phones.
Really nice comparison! My problem with the iPhone over years is the warm tint. Its always a bit yellowish and thats so annoying. Samsung is sometimes really overprocessed and to saturated but I do really prefer this look over the too warm iPhone tones!
@@tahabadar1359 I think what he is saying is that all this stuff that Samsung has not necessary. Like the quality and stuff is amazing but the zoom and being able to make photos from the internet look better just isn’t enough to make it a win. If they focused on the portrait and video more the Samsung probably would have won
Actually the zoomed moon is not achieved by the phone, it's achieved by the AI, it's better like the fake moon shots from Huawei P30 which basically just replaced/pasted the highres moon picture there, it's an artificial made picture (first of all you only need to thinking, if the camera need about 5-6 sec to collect the light to make a proper low light photo, how they can do a clear moon image 30-60 times per second on a video, if it's the real captured image?)
@@Winkoo6 Because the problem with capturing the moon isn't that there isn't enough light coming from the moon, there's too much compared to the rest of the scene. (at night) The moon isn't dark it's lit up, in the past with the P30 I think it was proven it was fake. But I don't think so for the Samsung, I could be wrong though.

Hello, I am new here, browsing reviews about "new" phone, due to my budget, but truly, thanks to your videos, love both S22 Ultra as well as iPhone 13 Pro Max. I know what I am after: I love photography, cinematography, stability, great functions of the phone and its camera (playing with the filters), smoothness of the OS itself, great battery (or as good as possible, at least), great performance (mainly when playing games) and last but not least the design of the phone itself. Thanks to this video in particular, I know more about both phones, having already some knowledge, although rather of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I am truly impressed what S22 Ultra can do when playing with the camera, especially the Zoom, that is insane!! I also agree, based on the comparisons in the video, that the colors in the photo look uniquely on S22 Ultra. Like they are shining naturally, no detail is being missed. Without any offense to iPhone 13 Pro Max, where it looks great and sharp. One thing that I noticed is that iPhone has slightly darker photos, especially when the scene itself is captured in the evening. It is not a disaster, but it is noticeable when you look at both in the video. It'll be a difficult decision for me, coz I got used to the smooth iOS system and its protection and other stuff on an iPhone, although my second phone has been model X, for a year and change, but honestly it is the worst iPhone ever - never experienced overheating and lagging so often, not even on model 8+. Ridiculous. Excuse me. Last but not least I need to admire your ability to speak honestly with great accent and good sense of humor. I am originally from Czechia, but English is already my second language, prefer it over my native language, to be honest, hehe. Overall it is a surprise to me that it is a draw in the end, but on the other hand it is also good that there are 2 titans to decide between. Thank you and stay safe and well :)
If you want better performance, battery and video pick, the iPhone 13 PM, the zoom is definitely very cool but as someone who had an older Samsung flagship, you really wont miss the zoom if you aren't already used to it, however you will be disappointed in about everything else, the only really food Samsung are the S23 and S24

I really hope that Samsung manages to address their main weaknesses through software optimisation (that being shutter speed as it’s both the thing affecting video and motion blur), even tho I’m more of a photo kind of person Edit: This post got a lot of traction and I got to say there are some fair points being made, as I said I like Samsung as I don’t have pets and mostly shoot pictures without any type of pro mode, but yeah an S8 shouldn’t feel more refined in terms of blur (shutter speed) compared to an S22U
I've been using their phones for last 5 years and issues are pretty much the same from model to model. Always promisses that "it will be fixed with updates" and - nothing happens. Camera software (imo the weakest point of Samsung phones) just isn't on pair with great and capable lenses/hardware, I wonder why don't they finally do it right. With these lenses - results could outperform Iphone in every single aspect...
@@stevanb.2590 Definitely, but I have to defend Samsung and say that my S8 consistently outperforms my buddy's iPhone X in video and image quality/clarity
Great video. Such a disappointment samsung didn't bump up the video more. Video the main reason to upgrade for most and I was hoping we would see a super steady that was actually useful in 2022.
Yeah, I guess the problem is these pixel binning sensors can't pixel bin in real time, so they resort to using only part of the sensor when recording a video. Plus this is the first time Samsung is using hybrid stabilization (they were only using EIS on previous phones) so the videos look jittery and in fact worse than the S21 Ultra last year.
@@DarioMestre lol no, he’s not ‘attached’ to apple, just because samsung won more categories separately, as a whole apple is more consistent - that’s why it’s a draw

I told myself when I was on the fence about upgrading from my note10 to the s21 ultra that it'd be mine for years. It finally felt like they'd designed a solid phone that doesn't scare you off once the next line drops. This still reigns true for me with the S22 ultra, and I will not be "upgrading" to it, simply because for $1,299 I only get 128gb storage for a phone capable of 8k video, a main 108mp camera, etc... Very little in improvement, and all the points this year went into style. I'm excited to see what they'll do if the phone doesn't sell as much as expected though, as this might breed more innovation next year! Until then, S21ultra will remain my favorite phone ever made.
I've always loved Samsung had the s6 edge, s8 plus, note 8, note 9, and been running the s10+ for the past 2 years and its still running like it just came from the factory, battery still holds its power amazingly.
I just LOVE the Spen included in the phone, for me that and the refinement of the rest of the hardware and software id enough to be better than the s21 ultra last year
You can trade your s21 in and get the s22 ultra for less than 600 dollars. I'm trading in my Note 20 Ultra and an old cracked screen note 10 and I'm getting the S22 Ultra for 300.
Samsung tend to only make worthy changes every 2 years anyway. The middle year they focus on refinement. But the introduction of the FE series really blows that concept out of the water now..
Wow, S22 Ultra smoked 13 PM in mic quality. That's a huge difference! And photos also looked a tad better. This is coming from a 13 PM owner. Really impressed! Gonna give credit where it's due tbh..
Updates do degrade camera quality in smartphones. I noticed that with all the phones I touched... Of course with a business mindset they needed to break the old model with suspicious updates for the new releases to sell.. like making the phone laggy or degrading the cam quality.. in with the new out with the old..
@@wickjone they didnt update the s10s camera loool that phone has already been maxed out years ago. its only newly released phones that get camera improvements with software updates within the first 6 months

11:47 i actually think that the samsung landslides this department. I haven't seen anything like these images before. Not too vibrant, but with character. Correctly pushing up brightness where brightness is necessary. Lots of detail even in the clouds.
ikr, I'm surprised how he suddenly brought up wide lens and zoom on a "night mode" comparison and somehow called it a draw because of something thats irrelevant to night mode, it's so biased and just flat out stupid.
What you also have to remember is that the S22 Ultra camera is this good out the box before any significant updates and improvements which is truly amazing!

The slow mo is crazy important to people like me who work in manufacturing. It makes diagnosing problems a million times easier. The camera doesn't have to be good, I just need to see a machine spinning at 300 times a minute go a little slower.
I just did a slow mo video in note 20 Ultra for a gender reveal. I sent the video to them then they posted and it was by far the best quality out of all the people that took videos. I was genuinely surprised my girlfriends 11 pro max wasn't as slow and looked too sharp and dropped the quality
@@SeniorTooth1472 I do admit I didn't pay to much attention to the shutter lag for the gcam mods, but that is due to the fact that all mods I tests so far where inferior in regard to image quality, if they even made it to control all lenses. Arun, thank you for your pic comparison in a low lit restaurant. You confirmed my suspicion that Samsung still didn't fix blurry pictures in these conditions even on their much touted S22 Ultra. My S21 gave me blurry pics at a birthday party a couple of weeks ago. My iPhone 11 Pro Max never gave me blurry pics when I owned it. I wish I never traded it in for a Samsung. As you said the iPhone camera is more balanced.
I hope Arun would make a social media usage comparison of both phones. O know that the iPhone has a much greater advantage compared to the other, but I would like to see how Samsung is optimized on social media apps. Btw, great video 🙌🙌🙌
Going from my XS to my 13 Pro, I do actually notice the telephoto being a little bit worse than the main camera, it is a bit more grainy and dimmer, but I haven't noticed anything other than that. Hopefully they'll improve the telephoto more for low light. The zoom and the detail that the Samsung gets is incredible.
Yeah, there is definitely quite a difference. The sensors on the telephoto and ultrawide lenses on the iPhone, are much smaller than the main camera. With photosites almost half the size. 1.9μm vs 1μm. That's pretty significant... It's a similar story with Samsung 1.12μm vs 2.4μm binned. This year they even reduced the sensor size of the Ultrawide/Tele compared to last years S21 series. (1.22μm vs 1.12μm).
Congrats, really great review and honestly reflects what an all around better camera system means. I have kids and the shutter lag on Samsung Galaxy phones is really annoying and makes a lot of the photos a blurry mess unless you have loooots of light. This has been a problem since my S9+, then again S10 and s21 ultra and as you show, it remains a problem even on the s21 ultra. It makes you miss those one of a kind family moments. So finally I jumped to the iPhone 13 pro wagon this year and it's just better for kids and moving objects like pets and busy families. Sorry Samsung but I prefer crisp photos of my kids over a nice photo of a road sign 10 km away

Edit: Disabling Shutter Sound and Vibration Feedback in settings makes the shutter lag feel a whole lot less.
It won’t make too much of a difference. We’re talking about software, it means there is a limit.
@@timonbubnic322 Samsung has to check its hardware aswell. It has some issues with stabilisation aswell.
I think you'd be getting better results if you picked up a Sony or a Canon Mirrorless mate. Lumix is holding you back haha

Everything else aside, that moon zoomed in image is in itself a feat to be achieved by the phone.

Hello,
I am new here, browsing reviews about "new" phone, due to my budget, but truly, thanks to your videos, love both S22 Ultra as well as iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Very little in improvement, and all the points this year went into style.
