In my opinion, Vigilante 8 never served as a "knockoff" to Twisted Metal. It was its only competitor. It did so much different from Twisted Metal that it served as a great alternative, right down to the very story being team-based (Vigilantes vs. Coyotes) instead of a free-for-all, and seated in alternate reality (OMAR) rather than supernaturally-driven (Calypso). I really hope we see a Vigilante 8 movie or TV series someday!

Twisted Metal & Vigilante 8 FTW!
Vigilante 8 was in fact one of the first few games developed for the new “Dual Shock Controller” which is why the 2nd analog handles camera. I also think I just realized why I always found the beat to the song Drunk In Love nostalgic because it sounds just like this Home Screen.
Thanks for this video, brought back so many memories; V8 2nd Offense was the very first game I ever played on the PS1; glad to see not everyone has forgotten about these hidden gems. I loved that you could load the game, then take the CD out and put your own CD in to play as the soundtrack and continuing playing listening to your own music, I listened to a lot of Eminem while shooting cars and blowing up the drive thru theater!
This music was so funky! I have many fond memories of this and twisted metal.

I rented this once as a kid but never gave it a fair shake since I was so used to TM-now I def wanna go back and try these now that I’m older and wiser lol-great video man!
I'd wish a remake on this game when the latest Twisted Metal tv series was announced.
So many fond memories in my younger days.
Each regular weapon has 2 (V8 1) or 3 (V8 2) special attacks that are activated with specific directional commands and MG fire. You may have to look them up online.
Whammies are when you hit someone with multiple weapons at once, even a weapon's special attack and it's regular attack at the same time.
Whenever an opponent is in a wrecked state, you can finish him with your character's special weapon or a regular weapon's special attack to total them and get some extra goodies like salvage points (upgrade points) in V8 2.
Played the hell out of v8 and V8 2nd offense on the n64 when I was a kid. I didn’t know about twisted metal until high school

Boogie special is broken in this game. And yes, there is unlockable vehicles in this game.n64 version is slightly better. You actually have a extra level called dreamland 64.
I still don't get why ppl think Twisted Metal was better than this game
I've tried the PSP version at least
the control just suck, it's way too slippery ,and I got motion sickness already by 5min playing it
and I'm using sweet tooth the lowest handling car in the game
Compared to Vigilante 8
the control is fine
there's homing/ autoaim weapon
to pick up (obviously help to reduce motion sickness) and most importantly the immersive gameplay, most of the building could be destroyed and trigger an event etc
The only thing Twisted Metal had going for it is it doesn't have the Bayou level.
God, I hated the bayou level.
Also there's no bigger whomp-whomp than him going through the space flight trick and only grabbing landmines.

I didn't care for the theme itself, and the mission was especially frustrating on the Palomino.
Your car couldn't stay in one spot, you had to take several cooldowns while shooting the valves, and it was too easy to drown.
Once the gates started opening you had to rush and get a propeller upgrade. If you already had one, you either had to rush to get underneath the bridge, or wait for the water to go above the bridge.
Then rush all around to find enough hard-to-spot briefcases, hoping you don't get hit with too many mortar shells and drown.
But don't rush TOO fast, or you flip your car and waste even more time.
@@xirabolt i think the most difficult one is the bike, and other vulnerable car like the astronaut's tinfoil and that RV that deals no damage
