One of the Breachway devs here, thank you for checking out our demo Splat!
Very astute on picking up that time passes as you move between the nodes, time will factor into gameplay at a later point.
There's honestly a lot more to add, this is just an early version of the core gameplay loop, we just want to make sure the core is solid before we layer things on top of it
While you can't control gigantic battlecruisers (yet anyway) , you will certainly be able to blow them up (we were discussing a fight against a ship so huge that you fight it in sections)
So was he right about the PDC's not being implemented yet for anti missile use, or is is just a % chance of destroying incoming missiles when used?
Game is cool
@@Silveressa Yeah, PDCs were bugged in the version he played, which is very unfortunate :P
We fixed them in the meantime (as well as a few other smaller bugs)
"...you can't control gigantic battlecruisers (yet anyway)". So you're saying there's a CHANCE? :)
@@Isteak80 Technically every ship can be playable. There are some design constraints to work around for piloting very small and very large ships, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
It would be in a different game mode than the standard roguelike run, we're still playing around with the idea
I love the ship design in this game. It's very Expanse + Mass Effect, and I'm here for it.
All I thought of was The Expanse especially with PDCs.
@@NiceMoKnows Yeah, I clicked the thumbnail because it looked so much like the Roci.
@@TeskoLove same lol
Those radiators remind me of Elite Dangerous
I know card games are a little saturated right now but I really like the ideas of your reactor giving different colors that correspond to different system, and keeping your hand and energy between turns. Both those changes to the normal digital card came formula really lean into the theme of this game and it feels nice
Agreed.
At first, I sighed a bit when I saw the card mechanisms of the game, but I gave it a shot, and Breachway Demo is good; it’s not just another Slay The Spire like in a different coat of paint.
Breachway is shaping up to be an approachable, turn based FTL like, that uses the cards to represent the different abilities of your installed subsystems; it works well.
I just happened to post and clear the Breachway Demo myself, and beyond the excellent 3 way Ordnance, Energy, and Mass system you mentioned, which neatly sidesteps the expected 3 AP system that is typical of many card games, it also includes a nice RPG component of gradually upgrading your ship with found / purchased subsystems, the constant upgrading of the abilities of a subsystem after each battle, and the nice interplay between upgrading the ships engine with scrap, vs. using the scrap to repair the ship; it works well.
The only suggestion I could think of in my approx. 3 hours playing around with it dealt with something I noticed when attacking an already damaged enemy subsystem; currently in Breachway attacking a damaged enemy system when it is repairing does not extend the time it has to repair.
I find this a bit uninteresting, as in FTL, you can keep hitting a damaged location to light it on fire, and maybe kill crew. I would be very interesting if this aspect of Breachway was expanded to become even more interesting.
I suggest that maybe continued hits to a damaged / shutdown enemy subsystem should deal bonus damage / heat, like how in FTL, continued hits to a damaged section spreads fire, as it blasts apart and adds massive amounts of heat to the room, perhaps in Breachway, it could even blast apart and blows room contents off the ship and into the void; no more blaster or missiles for your enemy ship!
Maybe this bonus damage / effect depends on the attack weapon system: missiles and space shotguns could blasts holes in the hull FTL style, lasers add heat and spread fires, while Ion blasters electrify the whole room, and shorting out the subsystem for even longer.
This would create more choices for the player in targeting, beyond just swapping between subsystems to avoid wasting dps, as well as providing something besides hull damage for choosing to continue to focus on a certain target, providing an even more target rich environment for the player, perhaps the enemy as well…
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Would it make the gameplay better, worse?
Let me know if anyone thinks I’m off base here, but I think that Breachway is looking really good, and if the devs keep working on this, and add some procedural generation on in, it will be incredible.
@@remipoujoulat7759 Cards are just a visual for a mechanic, no need to be so attached.
@@remipoujoulat7759 Yeah. Arbitrariy difficulty increase for lazy devs. Anyway this game looks like a thing to wishlist for now.
Card games aren't really my thing - I've played a few like Black Book that I could get down with a bit for a while... but THIS thing has me HYPED!! I've had it on my wishlist for a couple weeks. Can't wait for full release. I love your channel and find many of the games I end up buying because you've introduced them to me! Keep it up, Splat!!
this is very reminiscent of a little known game called Star Wolves, with hints of FTL, we need more of these kinds of games, strategic capital command is such an underrated genre
21:30 It's actually 2.5 credits per damage to repair. It rounds UP though. So for 120 credits it is the equivalent of repairing 48 damage. If you fight 24 battles and heal 2 damage in EVERY battle, it pays for itself. If you don't use it that often, you're losing money on the deal... but convenience factor is that you don't have to wait for a shipyard to do some minor repairs.
Just want to say thanks for doing what you do. I think you bring a lot of value to the gaming community. For me you filled a content hole that was once filled by TotalBiscuit back in the day. My Steam list is full of games you've given the once over to. You've got a whole lot of charm and the gift for the gab that serves you well in your videos. I give you a lot of respect for the raw first impressions you offer. I hope to see you hit a million soon.
This one is fun. I like the strategies around all the resource management and upgrades per system
Cards... Why does do they always have to have card draw systems? Visually looks really good though.
Some developers make card games for the same reason some make metroidvania games, they enjoy those kinds of games and want to make their own.
@@rominovaa6592 Fair enough answer. It seems to be more frequent in games (especially roguelike and strategy) over the last few years. To each their own. Hope the game does well though. Always room for more well made games.
Because it's a lazy fucking way to make people think there is content when there really isn't.
The absolute saturation of card systems in modern indie games is the bane of my existence. Imagine if FTL was being made today, it would have a freaking card system lol
I think a lot of times it's a way of doing an upgrade system that can be easy to understand and feels like you can control the play style but still have a sense of random things you can do in a turn without it just showing a percent to hit. I like the card systems but understand what any trends can drain people who want something different.
My issue is just when they use a system like cards because you can tell they are just trends chasing but put no pain into it.
Gotta say. I appreciate the Mass Effect-ish galaxy map and dock music.
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well
For the Warp is a similar space ship card battler, that is fully released, and that I have enjoyed in my many playthroughs.
Splat has covered For the Warp lol. Splat specifically covers indie titles, especially those that aren't out yet.
Looks like a fancier 'For The Warp'. That one was quite good and re-playable, curious to see how far this one would hold up.
The bigger ships in Everspace 2 also explode in spectacularly cathartic ways, IMHO. Top notch as far as ship death animations go.
This looks amazing, gonna get the demo, I also was surprised to hear about Crying Suns, a man of culture I see
This looks really good. Wishlisted it right away. My only worry is, if it will grant enough long term variation.
I really like the FTL-influences, like energy and officer management and the system-maps
Looking forward to this game!
21:20 below you can see that repairing 4 armor points cost 10, so it's probably cost = armor_points * 2.5 and rounded up :D Since there are supposedly many placeholders in the game right now, I'm guessing the money-related values will get changed and it'll make more sense in the future (cause it's weird flying around in space and getting 15 dollars for destroying a ship)
If the planets move over time, the map itself should thus alter, meaning your path changes each round, but it changes on a near totally predictable basis.
Also, unlock Super Thanks. "Desk Pop" is absolutely worth a donation.
damn Crying Suns was awesome, I love this genre thanks :D
Ah man, you had me at "battle cruisers", and you lost me at "cards"
i really thought this would be a 3d FTL-like, regardless those that like card style games will love it I'm sure :)
Visually this looks great. Style wise, pretty sweet. If only I was into card games like this
Agreed. That art style is almost insta-buy. If it had been anything but a card battler...
FTL meets Into The Breach meets Slay The Spire meets Space Engineers basically
This is already quite pretty, liked the little human floating in the dock so you could get a sense for scale.
I played the demo based on this video and i have got to say that it was good for its seems to promise. There are a few RNG moments, including times when I got disadvantages thrice in a row. But overall, I do want to see more.
Definitely not interested in another card game, but the art assets are *amazing* for this! What a shame they didn't make a more action oriented game.
i dont think we'd be able to appreciate the art nearly as well if it was action oriented (unless you meant like FTL, but saying 'action oriented' sounds like you want a shooter ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
I feel the same way my friend - for some reason, there are like effin' *no* capital ship games out there. It is what I long for...
Its always good to see im getting the bell notifications for your videos splat. Always enjoy watching.
Slay the spire + FTL?
thats a combo i wasnt expecting
Really? Both of those games have been copied to hell and back... honestly it's a wonder a FTL+STS hybrid hasn't been done yet.
"Elite Dangerous... they love their triangles." :D So true.
Cool looking ships and love the UI and especially the split screen! Makes me think it would be awesome for a comic themed game.
Man I love what you doo! Please never change!!! Never leave your work!
Me currently playing Elite Dangerous and hearing Splat say all ships are triangles: Totally agree. I recently bought a Chieftain mostly because it was the only non triangular ship among my options. LOL. For a game where humanity has expanded to thousands of star systems across hundreds of lightyears it certainly has ver few ships to choose from, like 20 or so ships, and most of them are triangles.
There are actually 38 different ships, you need to get rank with the appropriate faction and be in the right system to but them though. Most of them are callbacks to the originals which were designed when triangles were the only option, nearly 40 years ago. The original graphics for most platforms were just wireframe! The Imperial ships are worth a look for non-triangle designs as well, the Clipper is a little meh but the other 3 are really solid :)
I'm not a card game fan myself, but I really like this game. Also, the dev is a really nice guy; I'm honored to have gotten to know him. :)
"Hey Joe, what type of innovative combat system should we come up with for our new game" "lol, just copy Slay the Spire"
But IN SPACE! ;-)
Looks good. I'll hang back for a couple more Alpha's before playing, but it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.
First Like lets go, Love your videos, found quite a few games that I've come to enjoy thank you!!!
Love the core idea, I played it myself and loved it.
This game speaks to me on a personal level
This game reminds me of Infinite Space for the Nintendo DS, I loved that game.
4:21 - "Thei is the Galaxy."
Me: Sure does look more like a solar system than a galaxy. I don't think you can have a galaxy with only one star in it.
Just downloaded the demo and enjoyed my first run a lot. I hope this game gets a lot of love and attention!
Would love to see you do a video on Mechabellum if you don't already have it queued up!
16:58 Torpediting...this made me chuckle
I think in the battle at 30:00 the ship managed to shoot two missiles at you when you tried to play the PDC, which took out one, but left one missile that hit you. I'd have to review the footage again, it happened quick, but I don't think the PDC was bugged or that you used it wrong. It just wasn't powerful enough to swat both missiles. If I'm right then, not a game problem, not a you problem, just spicy enemies.
I went and checked, only 1 missile shot, pdc did nothing, a bit later the enemy played pdc as well and didn't stop the player missile, definitely bugged.
Hard FTL vibes ❤
Crying Sun recently got some kind of update - Art in it is still great :)
So, SplatterCat was King of Missile Town in Mechwarrior 😅 Nice😅
That's what you get when you put a bunch of space games in a mixer and give it a few pulses.. it looks a little strange and probably is an acquired taste.. ;) .. love the art-style though.
Looks nice. Mechanics seems solid. But as many others have stated. Im really put off by the card aspect of the game. I am sure others were hoping for more of an FTL experience as well as myself. Not saying it sucks. Its just not what I was hoping for. I do wish the devs success though.
I love the star trek TNG phaser sound
I consider demos and alpha stage is just proof of concept for games and development doesn't begin till beta. Also beta should be further divided into stages to prevent player loss and forever beta games such as weekly or monthly shut down with survey and open Q&A, stress test, different things to test in that week or month specifically to check balance or bugs.
Thanks for the video!
I am glad to finally have found someone who is also looking for games that focus on big spaceship combat. Can you recommend any games that scratch this particular itch?
Nice, kind of like the FTL game but with card systems. Love it!
Game looks awesome from the game play you showed...the deck building isn't normally my style but the rest of the game might carry it enough for me to enjoy...ill keep an eye on this one for later.
Thanks for showing.
Cool looking game , I like the fact you have to read the story line,
Rather than it doing a cut scene. There for you can use your imagination like in,
The good old days of gaming.
+1 like for Randy Newman impression XD
Seems like an interesting core. I don't play deck-builders generally, but this seems interesting. My main worry is the Roguelike aspect. Getting RNG to the fun and not frustrating point can be a bit of a problem.
I was kind of expecting the FTL track to shift with the turning of the planets in the system, which would require players to adjust their playstyle to get to what they want. Oh well.
That looks awesome so far. I dont have the time to bother with a demo like this atm but I hope he makes a good game out of this, and that I hear about it and have time to play it when its more ready :)
The game graphics look similar to Citizen sleeper. What is a massive W in my book.
If I can get the Argo / Space Cruiser Yamato, then take my money!
I think the repair cost is 2.5, but rounded up. Repair 4 worked out to 10.
My Krait Mk II begs to differ about that gap regarding the Peon
I found out what the officers are for. If they aren't manning a system you don't get cards from it.
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
most likely the repair cost is 2.5 per point, and the UI rounds up to whole numbers
was waitng for you to try this!
this is definitly inspired by moonrakers and i vibe with that
Man, the number of unreleased games you review is frustrating me when I look for them on steam.
I was so excited when I thought it was going to be a modular capital ship action rougelite... only for it to be a card game. Ugh. I'm not opposed to tcgs and such but the amount of these lately... I don't know. Feels like a cop out.
7:05 to get to gameplay
Was super excited about this one until the cards came out. It's looking more and more like I need to make the game I want to play for myself.
That may be not that bad idea!
Go for 2D for simplicity ;-)
Godot would be a pretty neat engine to start but if you really need to buy FAST some assets - Unity may be more suited to your needs.
Heck yeah, the more similar card games the better!
(Sarcasm)
I grew up with “macross”. Great intro
Great video as Always.
Seems more like you are flying a gunboat/frigate like the Rossi rather than a “big” battleship.
This looks decent. Thanks!
Oo will need to have a look at this now
I just played the demo yesterday and I liked it s loooot
Repair rate looks to be 2.5 per hull, but it rounds up. just below is 4 hull for 10.
this reminds me a lot of FTL but with better graphics
10:43 - Crying suns is one of few games I have bought because gameplay and visual style, but finished because of the story.
Excellent game with some neat mechanics and great world building, but the story left me feeling legitimately messed up for about a week afterward.
@@Takenmynameandmycat there are not many stories that can actually do that.
@@HappyAspid Definitely. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. More I'm sad because I know there's replay value to be had with different ships and combinations, but I know if I ever install it again, it'll be a long time from now. Stasis holds a similar place for me as well. I want to play Cayne, but I'm not prepared for more of that particular experience.
This is looking excellent
Great find splatt
hey SPLAT what's up with Trese's Cyber Knights ? people are sleeping on it, i want to see how it's coming along 👀
No dis to those who like the genre, but i think i apeak for alot of roguelike players who saw the thumbnail and was so excited until they saw its just a card game.
i came for -Tachi- Rocinante.
Oh I feel way too dumb for Nebulous Fleet Command (also not enough of a free time window to learn it and get going), and even though this is a card game (nothing against em, just not usually something I go for), I'll take it!
space slay the spire!
You keep skipping the Shield Amplifier, which since you usually start your turn with at least one shield, you can add +10 instead of +6 for a cheaper cost.
Homeworld vibes.
slay the spire in the space?
I saw the cards and thought no...Have seen this system so many times.
15:39 won't you need an officer to activate the missiles
Looks like a 3D version of FTL
You could call this game "How to ruin FTL with a deck builder".
Looks actually like a very light version of FTL. Hope there's a lot more coming, in terms of gameplay, or the game will have no chance on the market.
this one looks cool!
Hey splatcat! Thank you for what you do. I've started weighing my indie purchases after watching your video reviews on the game.
Will you go back and look at Surroundead and Fargone soon? Huge additions and updates are planned for Fargone and Surroundead had a major update adding ai bandits and military.
Seems like a more modern take on FTL
Slay the Spire meets FTL. OK I like where they are going with this. Hopefully they can put more depth in as it seemed pretty surface level atm.
